Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Improving N management guidelines in corn (Zea mays L.) production systems can reduce fertilization costs and potential negative environmental impacts. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of leaf nitrogen (LN) concentration as a tool to improve midseason N management in corn production. The experiment was conducted on 8 site-years with furrow irrigation. There were 11 N fertilization regimes with season total N rates ranging from 0 to 257 kg N ha−1. Split-applications were made at pre-plant, the 10th collared leaf stage (V10), the 12th collared leaf stage (V12), and tasseling (VT). The uppermost fully collared …

A decision to withdraw life-sustaining treatment (WLST) is derived by a conclusion that further treatment will not enable a patient to survive or will not produce a functional outcome with acceptable quality of life that the patient and the treating team regard as beneficial. Although many hospitalized patients die under such circumstances, controlled donation after the circulatory determination of death (cDCDD) programs have been developed only in a reduced number of countries. This International Collaborative Statement aims at expanding cDCDD in the world to help countries progress towards self-sufficiency in transplantation and offer more patients the opportunity of organ donation. …

The vaginal microbiome plays an important role in human health and species of vaginal bacteria have been associated with reproductive disease. Strain-level variation is also thought to be important, but the diversity, structure and evolutionary history of vaginal strains is not as well characterized. We developed and validated an approach to measure strain variation from metagenomic data based on SNPs within the core genomes for six species of vaginal bacteria:

An intrinsic property of the heart is an ability to rapidly and coordinately adjust flux through metabolic pathways in response to physiologic stimuli (termed metabolic flexibility). Cardiac metabolism also fluctuates across the 24-hours day, in association with diurnal sleep-wake and fasting-feeding cycles. Although loss of metabolic flexibility has been proposed to play a causal role in the pathogenesis of cardiac disease, it is currently unknown whether day-night variations in cardiac metabolism are altered during disease states. Here, we tested the hypothesis that diet-induced obesity disrupts cardiac "diurnal metabolic flexibility", which is normalized by time-of-day-restricted feeding. Chronic high fat feeding (20-wk)-induced …

Research On Precise Positioning Method Of Conveyor Belt For Peanut, Gu Lin-Feng, Li Ya, Ding Yan-Yu, Sun Ke
Food and Machinery
A precise positioning method for peanut ellipsoid target with gravity center height compensation is proposed, which is suitable for field operation. This method optimizes the field calibration steps and completes the belt plane calibration with the help of self-made high-precision calibration block. The ellipse contour curve of peanut was fitted by the direct least square method, and the short half axis size was corrected again. The horizontal plane of the conveyor belt was taken as the reference, and the actual center of gravity of peanut was mapped to make positioning compensation. Grasping success rate increased from 87% to 97%. Field …

Theoretical Study On Electrical Properties Of Molecular Junctions Of Viologen Derivatives, Zhuan-Yun Cai, Jia Liu, Si-Yuan Guan, De-Yin Wu, Zhong-Qun Tian
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this paper, the electrical properties of molecular junctions formed N,N′-bis(4-thioalkyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium (viologen) moiety between two gold (Au) electrodes have been investigated by combining density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green’s functional approach. To modulate the viologen molecule to be a cation with one and two positive charges (V+ and V2+), we introduce one and two trifluoroacetic acid ions (TFA-) around the molecule, respectively. The valence states of V+ and V2+ are confirmed by checking Mulliken and NBO charges. Then the relationship between molecular conductance and electronic structures of the neutral state …
Kant And Lindahl, John E. Roemer, Joaquim Silvestre
Kant And Lindahl, John E. Roemer, Joaquim Silvestre
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Wicksell (1896) and Lindahl (1919) analyzed the public provision of public goods through parliamentary negotiation. Roemer (2010, 2019) applied Kant’s (1785) categorical imperative to the private provision of public goods by voluntary contributions. They coincide in yielding efficient outcomes. Our focal equilibrium notions are the Multiplicative Kantian Equilibrium in the Kant-Roemer modelling and the Balanced Linear Cost Share Equilibrium for the Wicksell-Lindahl approach. It turns out that both are defined by the same individual optimization problem, and that costs are distributed according to marginal valuation, what we call the Lindahl Ratio. More general versions of the Wicksell-Lindahl and Kant-Roemer models …
