Implications Of The Quantum Dna Model For Information Sciences, F. Matthew Mihelic Apr 2021

Implications Of The Quantum Dna Model For Information Sciences, F. Matthew Mihelic

Faculty Publications

The DNA molecule can be modeled as a quantum logic processor, and this model has been supported by pilot research that experimentally demonstrated non-local communication between cells in separated cell cultures. This modeling and pilot research have important implications for information sciences, providing a potential architecture for quantum computing that operates at room temperature and is scalable to millions of qubits, and including the potential for an entanglement communication system based upon the quantum DNA architecture. Such a system could be used to provide non-local quantum key distribution that could not be blocked by any shielding or water depth, would …

William Blake's Satan As A Hermaphrodite, Genevieve E. Hartsock Apr 2021

William Blake's Satan As A Hermaphrodite, Genevieve E. Hartsock

Art & Art History ETDs

Depictions of Satan had started off with a grotesque and monstrous figure, but depictions of and attitudes towards the character shifted with the publication of John Milton’s Paradise Lost. However, although the aesthetics of the figure shifted, I argue that William Blake’s renderings of Satan continue the tradition of rendering them as monstrous and grotesque in a new way, in that Blake renders Satan as a hermaphrodite. Attitudes towards hermaphrodites has shifted over time, but the attitude of regarding them as unnatural or monstrous harkens back to ancient Greece, and these attitudes were only furthered with time and the advent …

Preparing Students Who Stutter For Postsecondary Employment: A Survey Of Slps In Montana, Neiman Alexis Snetzer Apr 2021

Preparing Students Who Stutter For Postsecondary Employment: A Survey Of Slps In Montana, Neiman Alexis Snetzer

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

People who stutter often experience adversity in the workplace in the form of discrimination, lower pay, and low self-esteem (Plexico et. al., 2019; Klein & Hood, 2004; Gerlach et. al., 2018). The goal of secondary schools is to prepare all students for life after graduation, including postsecondary education/training, independent living, and employment. Students with disabilities are aided in this process through the development and implementation of an Individualized Transition Plan (ITP; Individuals with Disabilities Act, 2004). To successfully develop postsecondary transition plans to improve employment outcomes for students who stutter (SWS), the difficulties they experience when preparing for, seeking, and …

Psychological Disparities Contribute To Emotional Burden For Caregivers Of Glioblastoma Patients, Markus R. Hirschfelder Apr 2021

Psychological Disparities Contribute To Emotional Burden For Caregivers Of Glioblastoma Patients, Markus R. Hirschfelder

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive brain cancer that weakens brain function to the point where patients usually rely heavily on a caregiver. Oftentimes, the caregiver is a female spouse who is caring for her husband with GBM. However, few studies are specific to this caregiver’s emotional burden—in fact, they are typically adapted from studies of slower-progressing diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. GBM has a much shorter median survival time. The stress on caregivers in that generally shorter period is high. Mitigating the emotional burden may significantly contribute to longer, better survival outcomes for the GBM patient. For content analysis, …

Supporting Middle-Elementary-Age, Second-Language English Speakers: The Effects Of Student-Centered Learning And Scaffolding, Madison Baroch Apr 2021

Supporting Middle-Elementary-Age, Second-Language English Speakers: The Effects Of Student-Centered Learning And Scaffolding, Madison Baroch

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

English language learners (ELLs) are the fastest-growing demographic in K-12 classrooms across the United States (National Education Association, 2020). Often, due to a lack of specialized ESL (English as a second language) programs, ELL students are directly placed into a mainstream classroom with no additional support. This tasks teachers with attending to ELLs’ unique needs while also instructing the entire class. Scaffolding is a teaching method that utilizes a student-centered learning (SCL) approach, and it has been increasingly incorporated by educators to enhance student engagement and performance. While positive effects of scaffolding have been reported, its effectiveness when utilized with …

Introducing Human-Like Mutations In Yeast Iso-1-Cytochrome C To Decrease Peroxidase Activity In Apoptosis, Sidney Thompson Apr 2021

Introducing Human-Like Mutations In Yeast Iso-1-Cytochrome C To Decrease Peroxidase Activity In Apoptosis, Sidney Thompson

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The mitochondria is an important organelle for a large assortment of metabolic processes. Cytochrome c (Cytc), a vital protein found in the mitochondria, is critical for life and death processes in eukaryotic cells. One of these functions includes shuttling electrons through the electron transport chain during cellular respiration. Cytc is also an essential signaling protein in the pathway of apoptosis, also known as programmed cell death. Yeast has similar components of this cell death pathway to higher eukaryotes such as humans, but does not contain all of the same optimized cascade processes. Additionally, peroxidase activity, an early …

Peer-Leader Activities in the Biology Classroom: Effects on Student Confidence in the Course and Knowledge of Discussion Topics

College students in STEM majors often report experiencing feelings that their courses are overly competitive, unsupportive, and that the professors seem apathic or unwelcoming. A promising approach to creating a more comfortable and supportive environment within the biology classroom is the utilization of peer-led activities. This study aims to investigate whether the student-reported confidence in the learning topic and in the overall course were affected by the completion of the peer activity, and additionally, whether the students who indicated positive post-activity perceptions …

The Bewitching Eye: Women As Basilisks In The Writing Of María De Zayas, Betta C. Lyon-Delsordo Apr 2021

The Bewitching Eye: Women As Basilisks In The Writing Of María De Zayas, Betta C. Lyon-Delsordo

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

A commonly referenced motif in Golden Age Spanish literature is the power of a woman’s gaze. For some, this female seductive power is something to be feared, and it is likened to the gaze of a basilisk, a monstrous serpent that can kill by locking eyes with its prey. One author who makes heavy use of this comparison is María de Zayas y Sotomayor (1590 - c. 1661), author of the Novelas amorosas y ejemplares and the Desengaños amorosos, two collections of short stories that bring to light the experiences of Spanish noblewomen in the 17th century. In the …

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Despite spending more than any other county on incarceration and reentry programs, the United States continues to have some of the highest rates of reincarceration. Programs designed to teach inmates job skills, GED programs, and new Medicaid measures have proved moderately successful for reducing recidivism among certain offenders, but one class continues to suffer high recidivism rates. People imprisoned for opioid drug use are more likely to reoffend than any other group, but very few governments in different countries around the world have allotted the resources to establish effective treatment facilities, creating a cycle very few can escape. This project …

Improving Population Monitoring Of Wolverines By Integrating Noninvasive Genetic Monitoring And Remote Camera Trapping, Nicole Bealer, Kylie Paul, Jessie Golding, Kristy Pilgrim, Mark Hebblewhite, Kevin Scot Mckelvey

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Wolverines (Gulo gulo) are a rare species of conservation concern that inhabit high-elevation montane climates in North America. Because of their remote habitat and rarity, wolverines are difficult to monitor and there is limited information on the population status of wolverines. Scientists are concerned that wolverines may be adversely affected by climate change as they rely on persistent spring snowpack, which increases the need for effective wolverine monitoring. Wolverines in the Bitterroot National Forest (BNF) were monitored for six years (2014-2020) with noninvasive genetic sampling via hair snag and individual identification via remote camera trap, which allowed for …

Assessing The Role Of Time And Beavers In Driving Recovery Following Restoration, Shawnalee M. Voyles, Daylen Egger, Kory Shoja-Chaghorvand

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Ninemile Creek in Western Montana has been highly degraded by placer mining that took place from the 1800s to 1960s, resulting in a straightened stream disconnected from its floodplain by 10 m tall gravel piles. This degradation decreases water storage and makes the habitat less suitable for aquatic organisms. To improve habitat quality, Trout Unlimited has reconfigured four reaches along the creek starting in 2014 to create a new river channel and connected floodplain with two years between each restoration project. Due to the physical disturbance of reconfiguring the stream channel and building the floodplain, plant communities were reset in …

Individual Effects Of Speech And Debate In High School, Patrick James Flanagan Apr 2021

Individual Effects Of Speech And Debate In High School, Patrick James Flanagan

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The term “forensics” originates from the Latin root forensis which means pertaining to the public, debate, and/or discussion. Co-curricular forensics are competitions of public speaking and argumentation that are usually pursed in addition to the normal course of study at a secondary or post-secondary institution. More commonly, the activity is known as speech and debate. I claim that participants of speech and debate are affected by the experience in a way that benefits their lives academically, professionally, and interpersonally. This is substantiated by the effect it has on relevant skills and participants personality.

A qualitative study of informants is performed …

Nutritional Access And Resource Knowledge In College, Morgan Weidow, Darra Perdaems, Drake Leonard, Madi Kohls, Brooklyn Cunningham

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Nearly 20% of college students are food insecure, compared to 14.5% of the general population who face food insecurity. Factors that influence this include rising tuition costs, lack of affordable housing in college towns, and an increase in first-generation and/or low-income students. Moreover, food insecurity has a notable effect on physical and mental health and overall academic performance. College years are an important intervention time for nutritional practices as students are making sovereign choices and assuming responsibility for their health decisions that will ultimately shape their lifestyles. We conducted focus groups with UM college students to gauge their dietary habits …

Archeological Excavations In The Courtyard Of Castillo De San Marcos, St. Augustine, Florida, J. C. Harrington Apr 2021

Archeological Excavations In The Courtyard Of Castillo De San Marcos, St. Augustine, Florida, J. C. Harrington

Florida Historical Quarterly

The recorded history of the fortifications at St. Augustine, Florida, begins on the day the Spaniards, under Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, landed at the Timucua Indian village of Seloy in the late summer of 1565. A large Indian communal house was turned over to the newcomers, who immediately set to work throwing up earthworks around the aboriginal structure.

Andrew Jackson Vs. The Spanish Governor, Herbert J. Doherty, Jr. Apr 2021

Andrew Jackson Vs. The Spanish Governor, Herbert J. Doherty, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

For more than one hundred years Andrew Jackson has been to writers of American history an exciting, inspiring, controversial, or shameful figure - according to the varying beliefs of those many writers. This writer, in recent issues of this Quarterly, has reexamined Jackson’s Florida career in two articles which were suggested by several previously unpublished Jackson letters. Several new letters coming to light have suggested a more detailed look at some of the ground covered in those earlier articles, specifically, the sources of hostility between Jackson and the last Spanish governor of West Florida, Jose Callava. Some historians have looked …

Archeology Of The Tampa Bay Area, Ripley P. Bullen Apr 2021

Archeology Of The Tampa Bay Area, Ripley P. Bullen

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Tampa Bay region includes the west coast of Florida from Tarpon Springs to Sarasota, or the three counties of Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Manatee; and its archeology is better known than that of any comparable region of the State. Nevertheless, in spite of the large amount of work which has been done on this area, there are many lacunae in our data. We are just beginning to glimpse the dynamics involved, and much work is required before we will have an adequate understanding of the prehistory of this area.

Andrew Jackson’S Cronies In Florida Territorial Politics, Herbert J. Doherty Jr. Apr 2021

Andrew Jackson’S Cronies In Florida Territorial Politics, Herbert J. Doherty Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

In Pensacola, an ancient Spanish village but then the boomtown capital of West Florida, the fifth day of October, 1821, was greeted with an unusual air of excitement. Along Palafox and Zaragoza streets, named long since for the Spanish hero General Palafox because of his heroic defense of Zaragoza, curious townsfolk gathered in gossiping knots around the Government House and public market, both fronting on Plaza Ferdinand VII. In Austin’s Tavern, the servants clearing away the remains of the great farewell party of the previous night, must have furtively gathered around the windows and peered expectantly into the street. Each …
