Changes In The Relationship Between The Horus And Seth: Settling The Score, Gabrielle Goodwin Apr 2021

Changes In The Relationship Between The Horus And Seth: Settling The Score, Gabrielle Goodwin

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference

As can be seen in Ancient Egyptian mythology, the gods Horus and Set had a rocky relationship that was most often represented as bitter rivalry. They both contended for the throne left empty by Osiris after his death with Horus eventually emerging victorious. Rather than remaining static in narrative and character, this is a story consistently tweaked across the fabric of Ancient Egyptian history. The Horus and Set of the Archaic Period are very different gods from the Horus and Set of the Late Period though the base story remains the same. By looking at the material and visual culture …

The Significance Of Oomoto: Why Imperialization Of Japan Led To An Alternative Religion, Chancellor T. Jenniges Apr 2021

The Significance Of Oomoto: Why Imperialization Of Japan Led To An Alternative Religion, Chancellor T. Jenniges

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference

Abstract: In 1852 Admiral Matthew Perry led an American fleet to Japan and persuaded the Japanese to modernize. Fearful of being colonized by the West, like the Chinese, the Japanese moved to westernize their own economy and society. As a result, they outlawed many historic customs. Japan began to westernize their customs and define religion. Three categories were established, religion, non-religion, and superstition. Any ideology or practice that no longer benefited their goals of westernization was deemed superstitious and removed from the narrative. However, these developments met opposition. One such opponent, Ueda Kisaburō, created an alternative religion called Oomoto in …

After Aidan: Irish Peregrini And English Ethnogenesis From Aldhelm To Boniface, Jonathan R. Hayes Apr 2021

After Aidan: Irish Peregrini And English Ethnogenesis From Aldhelm To Boniface, Jonathan R. Hayes

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference

The last several decades have seen tremendous interest among Anglo-Saxonists in the points of contact and influence between Irish and Anglo-Saxon clergymen in the seventh and eighth centuries. Yet there has not been a comprehensive synthesis to capture this phenomenon. The present study seeks to consolidate and extend knowledge of Irish-English interactions from Aldhelm to the time of Boniface. Particular attention is given to the Irish practice of peregrinatio pro Christo as a nexus of English fascination. The lasting consequences of these contacts are evaluated, and it is proposed that the concept of the “Angli” as an ecclesiastical and transregional …

The Manifestation Of Total War In The Mexican Revolution, Craig J. Verniest Apr 2021

The Manifestation Of Total War In The Mexican Revolution, Craig J. Verniest

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference

Abstract: The concept of total war is typically conceived of as the entirety of a nation’s or other belligerent’s resources and the spheres of non-combatant, civilian-centered life being drawn into the conflict. Total war also includes the methods of warfare being conducted with the intent of exhibiting complete destruction on an enemy’s forces and moral. Although total war in the Mexican Revolution is not typically, if ever, discussed in its historiography, I am arguing that the Mexican Revolution exhibited implementation of total war in its warfare, and therefore should be discussed in its historiography to similar degrees as that of …

The Sun Only Sets On Black Britons: Sexuality And The Notting Hill Riots, Victor Curiel Apr 2021

The Sun Only Sets On Black Britons: Sexuality And The Notting Hill Riots, Victor Curiel

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference

Late into August 1958, a gang of white youth unleashed a catastrophic wave of targeted violence against Black migrants in the areas around Notting Hill and Nottingham. The event came to be known as the Notting Hill and Nottingham riots. The riots served as a watershed moment, allowing government members to capitalize on race as a problem and eventually limit Black entry into the country and validate unequal access to opportunities and support. However, the riots merely served as kindling to a destructive discourse of race relations already taking place, constructing a narrative that saw Black individuals as foreign, dangerous, …

The Kings Have Daddy Issues: Masculinity And Generational Kingship Of The Plantagenet Dynasty, Richard Merrell Apr 2021

The Kings Have Daddy Issues: Masculinity And Generational Kingship Of The Plantagenet Dynasty, Richard Merrell

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference

Abstract: Masculinity studies owes a great debt to sociologist R. W. Connell, whose ideas on hegemonic masculinity have created a rich and fruitful field of study. The application of masculinity studies in medieval history is a similarly new field, dominated by Marc Ormrod’s broadly focused studies of the times. My paper does two things: it narrows Ormrod’s focus while introducing a new element of inquiry into the intergenerational relationships that reveal learned masculinity and the creation of symbols of power in Medieval England. I will focus on King Edward III; Edward the Black Prince, and King Richard II to examine …

A Case Examination Of Factors Impacting Charges In Vehicular Heatstroke, Jennifer Gray, Monica L. Mccoy Apr 2021

A Case Examination Of Factors Impacting Charges In Vehicular Heatstroke, Jennifer Gray, Monica L. Mccoy

SC Upstate Research Symposium

Abstract — Since the 1990s, preventing vehicular heatstroke has been the focus of many public health campaigns. Parents are implored to never leave their young children unattended in the car, and to check the backseat before getting out of the car. Despite the increase in awareness about child fatalities due to hyperthermia, children continue to be left or forgotten in vehicles with tragic consequences. Interestingly, the decision to charge the negligent caregiver in cases of vehicular heatstroke is not widely studied. While some evidence indicates that case factors (e.g., intentionality and caregiver intoxication) are relevant in the decision to charge …

The Development And Validation Of Covid-19 Prevention Behaviour Scale On Female Hungarian Population, Kinga Kalcza-Janosi, Susana Jancso-Farcas, Kinga Szabo, Ibolya Kotta, Eszter E. Marschalkó Apr 2021

The Development And Validation Of Covid-19 Prevention Behaviour Scale On Female Hungarian Population, Kinga Kalcza-Janosi, Susana Jancso-Farcas, Kinga Szabo, Ibolya Kotta, Eszter E. Marschalkó

Journal of International Women's Studies

In the emergency situation of an ongoing global pandemic, disease prevention behaviour is essential. The majority of studies assess preventive behaviour through relevant unidimensional questions, but this approach is not necessarily the best way to conceptualize prevention, as health maintenance guidelines cover several different areas of possible individual precautionary and preventive practices. The aim of the study is the development and validation of a multidimensional COVID-19 prevention behaviour scale for the Hungarian speaking population (Covid-19-PBS). The items address major aspects related to preventive behaviour towards COVID-19 inspired by preliminary pandemic studies and the WHO prevention recommendations. 612 eligible female individuals …

A ‘Superlicious’ Feast: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Davy Crockett’S Almanacs As An Early Form Of White National Identity, Darren L. Letendre Apr 2021

A ‘Superlicious’ Feast: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Davy Crockett’S Almanacs As An Early Form Of White National Identity, Darren L. Letendre

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference

Abstract: Davy Crockett’s Almanacs, published between 1835 and 1856, have been held as a prime example of nineteenth-century Anglo-American folklore. While authors have commented on their comic qualities and racist content, what has been lacking is a rhetorical analysis, as suggested by Folklorist Stephen Gencarella, which would examine the ways in which “folklore is not something that a folk does, rather… something which constitutes a folk.” This paper analyzes the almanac stories dealing with native peoples in order to understand the political and ideological discourse that was propagated by these publications. Rather than genuine folk-stories faithfully recorded by publishers, these …

Finding A Community Niche: Rethinking Historic House Museums In Oregon, Liza Julene Schade Apr 2021

Finding A Community Niche: Rethinking Historic House Museums In Oregon, Liza Julene Schade

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference

Historic homes in Oregon land on a wide spectrum of preservation, from the dilapidated, boarded-up building to the fully functioning interpretive site. There are four major factors affecting the success of projects in this state: level of preservation, board commitment and capacity, public interest and access, and funding issues. Based on original fieldwork, this paper will utilize the above factors to look at case studies in three counties in Oregon, and will conclude with analysis and recommendations for current Historic House Museum projects.

The No-Color Of Women: Women And Commemoration In The Treasure Valley Of Idaho, Shaina Lynch Apr 2021

The No-Color Of Women: Women And Commemoration In The Treasure Valley Of Idaho, Shaina Lynch

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference

Abstract: In this paper, I research the public commemoration of women in the Treasure Valley and Southwest Idaho. Public memorials were sought out, visited, and photographed. A map was created of the locations and added to a website I made as part of this project, www.idahowomeninhistory.com. In order to make an argument for more statuary and monuments to women in Idaho there needed to be an explanation for the omission. I begin with the glaring absence of women in the public sphere and popular history (written and dominated by men), which explains their lack of celebration in public spaces. They …

Making Research Data Discoverable: An Outreach Activity Of Datacite, Surbhi Arora, Rupak Chakravarty Apr 2021

Making Research Data Discoverable: An Outreach Activity Of Datacite, Surbhi Arora, Rupak Chakravarty

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Objective

The enormous growth in research data generated today has highlighted the value of data management (RDM) to make research FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interconnected and Reusable). Appropriate data instructs researchers to use and reuse that data within appropriate citations and attribute it to the author. And Data citation refers to the process of presenting a reference to data in the same way as a bibliographic reference to printed resources is regularly provided by researchers. In this regard, the objective of this paper is to investigate the activities of the Datacite website in managing research data.

Methodology

The study approached the …

Learning Sampling Policy For Faster Derivative Free Optimization, Zhou Zhai, Bin Gu, Heng Huang Apr 2021

Learning Sampling Policy For Faster Derivative Free Optimization, Zhou Zhai, Bin Gu, Heng Huang

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Zeroth-order (ZO, also known as derivative-free) methods, which estimate the gradient only by two function evaluations, have attracted much attention recently because of its broad applications in machine learning community. The two function evaluations are normally generated with random perturbations from standard Gaussian distribution. To speed up ZO methods, many methods, such as variance reduced stochastic ZO gradients and learning an adaptive Gaussian distribution, have recently been proposed to reduce the variances of ZO gradients. However, it is still an open problem whether there is a space to further improve the convergence of ZO methods. To explore this problem, in …
