Does Computer-Based Classroom Instruction Impact Student Participation?, Paige Hyer
MOT Student Capstones
COVID-19 has caused a disruption of typical teaching methods forcing students to receive instruction virtually. Computer-based classroom instruction was implemented to allow for quick transition between virtual and face-to-face instruction as determined by COVID-19 cases. This research explores how computer-based classroom instruction has impacted student participation within the classroom and the role of occupational therapy to support students who utilize this method of learning. Eighteen elementary school teachers who currently utilize this method of learning were surveyed and data was collected to determine feedback on the impact of computer-based classroom instruction. Data determined that student participation is impacted by computer-based …

Benefits Of Montessori Method Use In Activity Involvement On Individuals With Dementia, Megan Canzoneri
MOT Student Capstones
Background: The Montessori Method was a teaching approach developed by Dr. Maria Montessori for children who did not have access to proper education and materials. She used this method by teaching them through familiar tasks, puzzles, and self-driven interest. This taught them independence, problem-solving, and decision make. This project discusses the use of the method within the geriatric and memory care population to help them remain independent through choosing activities that interest them. These activities consist of familiar tasks such as setting a table, washing dishes, and folding clothes. Method: This project used a needs survey, pre- and post-survey, and …

Capstone Project: Early Active Motion Versus Early Passive Motion Following A Flexor Tendon Repair, Matthew Angle
MOT Student Capstones
Flexor tendon injuries are relative)y rare, occurring in 7.0/100,000 people. An early active motion or early passive motion protocol have been the two primary methods used by occupational therapists for rehabilitation of a flex or tendon repair. Each of these methods have their own strengths and weaknesses, but the intervention that leads to a better outcome while maintaining integrity of the flexor tendon repair was researched. Common complications that occur during the rehabilitation of a flex or tendon that can affect the integrity of the repair included tendon lag, scar adhesions, tendon rupture, and joint contracture. Research focused on the …

MOT Student Capstones
The occurrence of work-related shoulder and neck injuries is on the rise for computer workers due to extended work hours, fewer breaks, and repetitive movements involving neck rotation, shoulder movement, and awkward posture. The individual's workstation and environment's design play a key role contributing to neck and shoulder injuries. An occupational therapist is equipped with the knowledge and skills to modify and adapt a person's workstation and improve their shoulder and neck pain or injuries. The capstone project's purpose was developed to identify risk factors, promote an occupational therapy ergonomic intervention program, suggest workstation and environment modification/adaptations, and promote posture …

Pediatric occupational therapists working with students in a school-based setting are consistently facing challenges with time management due to their high caseload numbers and limited documentation time in school-based settings. Along with time constraint issues, schoolbased occupational therapists find it difficult to communicate with caregivers on the skills being practiced in the school setting due to limited face-to-face time with caregivers. Children continue to require therapeutic services in school-based settings, however as occupational therapists continue to take on more responsibilities in this setting it becomes more challenging to find time to provide effective and efficient means to educate and reinforce …

Landlord Perceptions Of Homelessness In The Bear River Region, Claire Wever, Alyssa Cronin, Heather Hopkins
Student Research Symposium
Homelessness has been rising at an alarming rate in the Bear River Region of Utah. Between 2017 and 2019, there has been a 400% increase in unsheltered homeless (HUD, 2019). Research indicates a lack of affordable housing is a likely cause (Lucero & Barker Tolman Shuler, 2020). Armed with the knowledge that finding housing is a key aspect to reduce homelessness, the present study set out to ascertain landlords’ awareness and attitudes of homelessness, as well as types of interventions they would support. Collaborating on a community-engaged project, USU social work students and faculty developed a survey of knowledge and …

Prediction Of Days-On-Market For Single-Family Homes In The Housing Market Of Savannah, Keagan Galbraith
Prediction Of Days-On-Market For Single-Family Homes In The Housing Market Of Savannah, Keagan Galbraith
Honors College Theses
The number of days that a home stays on the housing market (Days-On-Market—DOM) provides crucial information about the real estate market’s behavior that affects the buyer’s/seller’s decision (at the micro-level) and indicates the level of risk associated with real estate investments and identifies the housing bubbles (at the macro level). Housing data has a mixture of simple and complex attributes. A complex attribute in contrast with a simple attribute, has an array of values for a real estate property, which creates a major challenge in prediction of DOM. DOM is a binary attribute with values of “short” (£ six months) …
The Experience Of Dispositional Optimism Among Female African Americans, Hispanics/Latinas, And Caucasians In Generation Z: An Existential Phenomenological Investigation, Katie A. Kennedy
Honors College Theses
Mental health is becoming an increasingly important topic within Generation Z. 39% of college students in the United States reported experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety (Burwell, 2018). Conversely, researchers have shown an inverse relationship between high levels of optimism and depression, as well as optimism and suicide ideation (Chang, Martos, Sallay, Change, Wright, Najarian, & Lee, 2016). Additionally, Optimism has been negatively correlated with negative psychological outcomes (Chang, et al., 2016). The purpose of this study will be to examine dispositional optimism within female Generation Z university students. Researchers will use a qualitative interviewing process to capture the full …

Video games show great potential for pedagogical use inside of high school classrooms; however, despite this video games remain underutilized. Video games can be employed to create engagement among students which shows great promise to improve the classroom experience for students. Through accessing their “power to play,” as Marc Carnes described it in his work, Minds on Fire, pedagogical practices like video games can deepen students’ understanding and retention of course materials. This project will examine how video game pedagogy is currently used, the compatibility of this pedagogy to adhere to Utah's state standards, as well as estimate the standard …

Enzymes in the Gcn5-related N-acetyltransferase (GNAT) superfamily are widespread and critically involved in multiple cellular processes ranging from antibiotic resistance to histone modification. While acetyl transfer is the most widely catalyzed reaction, recent studies have revealed that these enzymes are also capable of performing succinylation, condensation, decarboxylation, and methylcarbamoylation reactions. The canonical chemical mechanism attributed to GNATs is a general acid/base mechanism; however, mounting evidence has cast doubt on the applicability of this mechanism to all GNATs. This study shows that the Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA3944 enzyme uses a nucleophilic serine residue and a hybrid ping-pong mechanism for catalysis instead …

The Relationship Between Optimism And Perceived Health In Generation-Z An Explanatory Investigation, Natalie D. Woodward
Honors College Theses
Research has found possible links between optimism, happiness, and perceived health in past generations (Peterson & Bazio, 1991). Little research has been found examining these variables within Generation Z. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between optimism, happiness, and perceived health in Generation Z. A secondary purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between optimism, happiness and perceived health between genders and races. A third purpose of this study is to predict happiness by examining optimism, perceived health, and sleep within Generation Z. 2287 Generation Z participants took the Life Orientation Test, the …

Processing Nihilism: The Struggle For Valuative Supremacy In Javier MaríAs' Berta Isla, Kristen A. Brimhall
Theses and Dissertations
Nihilism is a popular and heavily studied topic which is prominently displayed in Javier Marías' novel Berta Isla. In this article, both Nietzschean and Heideggerian concepts of nihilism will be identified and analyzed within the context of Marías's novel. Through textual analysis, the origin of nihilism will be explored as it relates to the will to power and valuative schema of the individual. It will be suggested that nihilism stems from valuative thinking induced by the herd-mentality of a community and that the fulfillment of such is the acceptance of absolute truth grounded in being and becoming.

Gravel Liquefaction Assessment With The Dynamic Penetration Test At Non-Liquefaction Sites In Valdez, Alaska And L'Aquila, Italy, Nicholas James Linton
Theses and Dissertations
The development of a reliable, and cost-effective in-situ method for characterizing the liquefaction potential of gravelly soils is a considerable challenge for engineers and researchers. The ability to accurately characterize the liquefaction potential of gravelly soils is an important consideration at port facilities and dams for example. The Dynamic Penetration Test (DPT) provides a reliable and cost-effective method for evaluating the liquefaction resistance of gravelly soils. Probabilistic liquefaction triggering curves based on DPT field data have been developed from data collected at 47 sites in China. However, using the DPT-based liquefaction curves for locations outside of the Chengdu plain in …

Maintenance Of Water Systems With The Bear River Health Department, Kaden Bunch
Student Research Symposium
The Bear River Health Department (BRHD) is one of the 13 local health departments that work to promote and protect the citizens of Utah. Within the department, there are dozens of divisions, one such overseeing maintenance and approval of public water systems and pools. Public water systems are prone to bacterial growth, whether caused by those that use these systems, construction, or simply an animal that slipped in. To solve this issue, BRHD and the state of Utah actively monitor these public systems to ensure the health of those that use them. This is done by measuring chlorine levels in …
Contextual Effects On Listeners' Word Recognition In Combined Degradations, Kari Loehr
Contextual Effects On Listeners' Word Recognition In Combined Degradations, Kari Loehr
Student Research Symposium
Although contextual information can help improve listeners’ perception and understanding of speech, it may not always help in certain conditions. Reasons for this are that when a speech signal is masked by background noise and/or the speaker has a speech disorder, listeners seem to rely most heavily on the acoustic phonetic content of the words in a sentence, rather than the contextual information (Dongilli, 1994). For this study, we aimed to identify and analyze the impact of context effects on spoken word recognition in the presence of a degraded speech signal and various levels of background noise. To do so, …

Central-Bank-Digital-Currency Blockchains; Us Economic Influence Threatened – Requires Quantum Network Development And Deployment, Erika Mueller
Student Research Symposium
Traditional, digitally secured Information and Communications Infrastructures (ICI) whose encryption, transmission and reception architectures are approved for sensitive data will soon be vulnerable to quantum penetration. This leads to security compromises impacting public and private spheres. The state which first achieves Quantum Supremacy will have a window of opportunity to compromise its adversaries’ ICI and gain valuable information, while protecting their own sensitive data. Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC) reliance on Blockchain technology for financial transactions poses economic and security challenges to the US, by undermining global reliance on Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Transactions (SWIFT) and the US Dollar …
