Building A Data Washing Machine For Unsupervised Entity Resolution Of Unstandardized References Sources, Awaad K. Al Sarkhi
Building A Data Washing Machine For Unsupervised Entity Resolution Of Unstandardized References Sources, Awaad K. Al Sarkhi
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation describes a first attempt to build a data washing machine, a system able to take dirty data and through an unsupervised process, output clean data. The washing machine design described here focuses on two main aspects of the data curation process, token correction and data redundancy. It aims to simplify and automate the preparation of data used to create information products. In this approach, all these steps would be automated, thus saving the time and effort of the data analysts who ordinarily perform these actions. In other words, this is the opposite of the current approach to first …
Characterizing Pm2.5 Air Samples Of Northeast Mississippi, Harley Nabors
Characterizing Pm2.5 Air Samples Of Northeast Mississippi, Harley Nabors
Honors Theses
Ambient air pollution has been associated with adverse health effects throughout the entire world. Although epidemiologists study air pollution extensively, rural areas are often the least understood. In 2020, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality used less than 10 air sampling locations across the state leaving a large gap in air quality knowledge. In this study, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air samples were collected from three different rural Mississippi cities–Ackerman, Eupora, and Houston, in the summer of 2020. Following collection onto filters, elemental black carbon analysis and an oxidative potential assay were both used to characterize the samples of interest. …
The Politics Of Taxation: An Economic Analysis Of Politically Motivated Tariffs Placed On French Wine By The United States, Katelyn Hutson
The Politics Of Taxation: An Economic Analysis Of Politically Motivated Tariffs Placed On French Wine By The United States, Katelyn Hutson
Honors Theses
In this paper, I research the economic distortions caused by a 25% retaliatory tariff placed on French wine by the United States in October 2019. This tariff was enacted as retaliation for airline subsidies provided by various European countries to Airbus and was approved by the WTO as a valid compensation for the loss these subsidies caused to the American company Boeing. In order to view the correlation between fluctuations in US import quantities of French wine and the retaliatory tariff, I estimated the effect of the tariff on the wine market using linear regression analysis. Through this regression, I …

Black Maternal Mortality In The United States, Grace Phelps
Black Maternal Mortality In The United States, Grace Phelps
Honors College Theses
Black maternal mortality is a looming issue in the United States as the rate of Black maternal deaths is 3-4 times higher than the average rate for White women. Research establishes that this is a multifaceted issue of care quality, preexisting health, biases and racism, and structural inequalities. This study aims to discuss the statistics, contributing factors, and possible solutions to the issue of Black maternal mortality. Specifically, this study aims to educate nursing students on the matter and test the implications an educational session has on knowledge about Black maternal mortality and how health care professionals can be part …

Anomalous Wave Statistics Following Sudden Depth Transitions: Application Of An Alternative Boussinesq-Type Formulation, Paul A.J. Bonar, Colm J. Fitzgerald, Zhiliang Lin, Den Bremer Ts Van, Thomas A.A. Adcock, Alistair G.L. Borthwick
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
AbstractRecent studies of water waves propagating over sloping seabeds have shown that sudden transitions from deeper to shallower depths can produce significant increases in the skewness and kurtosis of the free surface elevation and hence in the probability of rogue wave occurrence. Gramstad et al. (Phys. Fluids 25 (12): 122103, 2013) have shown that the key physics underlying these increases can be captured by a weakly dispersive and weakly nonlinear Boussinesq-type model. In the present paper, a numerical model based on an alternative Boussinesq-type formulation is used to repeat these earlier simulations. Although qualitative agreement is achieved, the present model …

A Review Of Network And Computer Analysis Of Epileptiform Discharge Free Eeg To Characterize And Detect Epilepsy, Caitlin West, Wessel Woldman, Katy Oak, Brendan Mclean, Rohit Shankar
Peninsula Medical School
Objectives. There is emerging evidence that network/computer analysis of epileptiform discharge free electroencephalograms (EEGs) can be used to detect epilepsy, improve diagnosis and resource use. Such methods are automated and can be performed on shorter recordings of EEG. We assess the evidence and its strength in the area of seizure detection from network/computer analysis of epileptiform discharge free EEG. Methods. A scoping review using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidance was conducted with a literature search of Embase, Medline and PsychINFO. Predesigned inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied to selected articles. Results. The initial search found 3398 articles. …

Background: The large airway epithelial barrier provides one of the first lines of defense against respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19. Substantial inter-individual variability in individual disease courses is hypothesized to be partially mediated by the differential regulation of the genes that interact with the SARS-CoV-2 virus or are involved in the subsequent host response. Here, we comprehensively investigated non-genetic and genetic factors influencing COVID-19-relevant bronchial epithelial gene expression. Methods: We analyzed RNA-sequencing data from bronchial epithelial brushings obtained from uninfected individuals. We related ACE2 gene expression to host and environmental factors in the SPIROMICS cohort of smokers with …

Quantification Of Wake Shape Modulation And Deflection For Tilt And Yaw Misaligned Wind Turbines, Juliaan Bossuyt, Ryan Scott, Naseem Ali, Raul Bayoan Cal
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Misaligned wind turbine rotors redirect the wake, and manipulate the wake shape by introducing a counter-rotating vortex pair. This mechanism is of great interest for improving wind farm power output through static or dynamic misalignment. In this study, cross-plane stereo-particle image velocimetry measurements are used to characterize the wake evolution for tilt misalignment and verify differences with yaw misalignment. Blockage from the ground, shear in the velocity profile, turbulence levels, hub-vortices and tip-vortices are found to strongly affect wake evolution for a tilted wind turbine resulting in a non-symmetric behaviour for upwards deflecting or downwards deflecting tilt. The downwards deflection …
Recoding Postmodernist Art Criticism: The Debate Between Anti-Pluralism And Pluralism, Juanjuan Yang
Recoding Postmodernist Art Criticism: The Debate Between Anti-Pluralism And Pluralism, Juanjuan Yang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
While pluralism is considered politically correct today, this article tries to describe the trajectory of anti-pluralist criticism through some famous authors of October, specifically Hal Foster, who edited the seminal Anti-Aesthetic: Essays on Postmodern Culture. In the beginning of the 1980s, Foster categorized two types of postmodernism, one being the postmodernism of reaction and neo-conservatism, the other being postmodernism of resistance and post-structuralism. Aligning with the latter of the two types, major authors of October published a series of important essays to criticize “mainstream postmodernist art, ” especially neo-expressionist paintings. However, during the same period, Arthur Danto claimed“the end of …

Research Tuesdays
In Fall 2020, President Callahan announced several Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) projects that the university would commence, including a DEI Audit of the Library’s collections. We formed a planning group, did initial research on equivalent DEI audits at other institutions, and decided to involve students in the process by hiring 9 as Interns in Spring 2021. The students will meet weekly with the planning group to discuss the project, audit specific portions of the collection (based on disciplinary interest), and provide recommendations for collection diversification. This presentation will cover the initial results of hiring students, finalizing methodology for the …

Latex PHs need to be wiped in order to remove the ink accumulated in the nozzle plate while printing,
spitting or priming.
Every generation of Latex ink has had more complex requirements in terms of servicing. Wiping is one
of the most affected routines due to the behavior of the ink, that has been getting more and more
stickier in every generation.
The ink paddle generated in the nozzle plate dries creating an ink crust that needs to be removed. The
wiping method has been evolving adapting to the crust behavior.
In order to wipe, the solution provided by Polestar …

The new generation of wireless networks can involve a mix of radio technologies, especially for industrial environments. As devices roam back and forth between different radio networks, it is very difficult to continually monitor the security posture and identity of devices connected to the network. Presented herein are techniques that involve the combination of a Device-Generated Trust Card and a Network-Generated Trust Card that can be used to validate device identity (e.g., an Internet of Things (IoT) device identity) and behavior using a continuous Multi-Factor Authentication (cMFA) structure.
