The Armed Occupation Act Of 1842, James W. Covington Apr 2021

The Armed Occupation Act Of 1842, James W. Covington

Florida Historical Quarterly

Throughout the history of advancing frontiers in many parts of the world there have been attractive offers of free land to brave and fool-hardy persons who would live at the dangerous edge of the advancing settlements. Such an offer was made to the retiring Roman legionnaires in the hope that they would live near the frontier line in Gaul and elsewhere and serve as added protection against the warlike German tribes. In 1630, a large tract of land was offered to each commander and fifty acres to other persons who would settle near the dangerous Pamunkey tribe in Virginia, and …

The Avero Story: An Early Saint Augustine Family With Many Daughters And Many Houses, Charles W. Arnade Apr 2021

The Avero Story: An Early Saint Augustine Family With Many Daughters And Many Houses, Charles W. Arnade

Florida Historical Quarterly

By November 10, 1702, the English forces led by the ruthless James Moore, Governor of English Carolina, had occupied the town of St. Augustine. Over 1500 people took refuge in the Spanish fort which the English never were able to conquer. For two months Moore besieged the fort. The Spanish artillery was weak and ineffectual in driving away the enemy; the English artillery was inadequate against the massive walls of the fort. Moore tried to place his guns within closer range of the moat. The Spanish, afraid of this maneuver, dispatched a patrol with orders to burn all houses within …

Civil War Operations In And Around Pensacola Part Iii, Edwin C. Bearss

Florida Historical Quarterly

Five days subsequent to the great artillery duel of November 22-23 Bragg endeavored to transmit mail to the Confederate prisoners held by the Yankees. Brown refused to receive the letters and even disdained to state his reasons for so doing. He was by no means as courteous and amiable as he had been after the attack on his outside confrere, Colonel Wilson. Later in the day a small yawl attempted to enter the bay from the fleet, a privilege heretofore accorded to the Federals, as until November 22 the Rebels’ vessels had been allowed to tie up at the navy …

Pensacola's Exiled Government, W. B. Skinner Apr 2021

Pensacola's Exiled Government, W. B. Skinner

Florida Historical Quarterly

Judah P. Benjamin, Confederate secretary of war, ordered General Braxton Bragg, commanding officer of Confederate forces at Pensacola, to send as many troops as he could to Tennessee. On February 18, 1862, Bragg issued orders to abandon Pensacola. Upon Bragg’s departure, General Sam Jones assumed the command with the instructions to destroy everything in the Pensacola area which might be of use to the Federal forces who occupied Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island. The destruction was completed by May 9th and the following day the Federals occupied Pensacola.

Civil War Operations In And Around Pensacola Part Ii, Florida Historical Society Apr 2021

Civil War Operations In And Around Pensacola Part Ii, Florida Historical Society

Florida Historical Quarterly

The new Confederate commander at Pensacola seemed omnipresent. In conjunction with Colonel William J. Hardee, commander at Fort Morgan, the bastion guarding the eastern approaches to Mobile Bay, a reconnaissance was conducted preparatory to the opening of a new line of communication between Mobile and Pensacola. It was hoped that an easier route could be developed between these two key points by utilizing water and land transportation, via Bon Secours, Bear Creek, and Perdido Bay, eliminating the long, slow overland trek from Blakely.

Florida And The Cuban Revolution, 1895-1898, William J. Schellings Apr 2021

Florida And The Cuban Revolution, 1895-1898, William J. Schellings

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Cuban revolt against Spanish rule in 1895 and the possibility that this might lead to war between Spain and the United States placed Florida in a dilemma. There were a number of reasons for the state’s rejoicing at the prospect of Cuban independence, and for many individual Floridians to want to aid the rebels. Against this, however, was the fear that if the United States went to war against Spain it could end only in disaster for Florida. As a result, an attempt was made to walk a middle path, to encourage the giving of private aid to the …

Asboth's Expedition Up The Alabama And Florida Railroad, Edwin L. Bearss Apr 2021

Asboth's Expedition Up The Alabama And Florida Railroad, Edwin L. Bearss

Florida Historical Quarterly

During the first week of July, 1864, the powerful “Army Group” commanded by Major General William T. Sherman slowly closed in on Atlanta, Georgia. To help loosen the grip of the Confederate Army of Tennessee on Atlanta, Sherman planned to send a fast moving cavalry force, about 3,000 strong, to smash the Montgomery and West Point Railroad. (This railroad linked the defenders of Atlanta with the magazines and supply depots of central Alabama.) Leaving Decatur, Alabama, on July 9, these raiders were expected to strike the vital railroad near Opelika. After tearing up the track and burning the trestles and …

Florida On The Eve Of The Civil War As Seen By A Southern Reporter, William Warren Rogers Apr 2021

Florida On The Eve Of The Civil War As Seen By A Southern Reporter, William Warren Rogers

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the days prior to the firing on Fort Sumter, readers of the Charleston Daily Courier were kept well informed on current events by its various correspondents. No paper in the South was better supplied with journalists, who sent in weekly, and often daily, reports from centers of interest. One of these reporters styled himself “Batchelor,” and he made a tour of Florida for the Courier.

A French Document Relating To The Destruction Of The French Colony In Florida At The Hands Of The Spanish, 1565, A. E. Hammond Apr 2021

A French Document Relating To The Destruction Of The French Colony In Florida At The Hands Of The Spanish, 1565, A. E. Hammond

Florida Historical Quarterly

One of the bloodiest and most publicized chapters in the early history of Florida was written by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, intrepid and unscrupulous agent of Philip II of Spain. On three occasions in the months of September and October, 1565, this Spanish gentleman, fired with true inquisitional fervor, ordered and supervised the systematic slaughter of remnants of the third French expedition to the Florida coast, thus ending the French attempt to colonize this disputed territory. Neither the events leading up to the massacres nor the details of the savage butchery requires retelling here. They are the subjects of …

Understanding Molecular Pathways Underlying Axonal Degradation In Painful Diabetic Neuropathy, Shikhar Gupta '22, Kavin Suhirtharen '22 Apr 2021

Understanding Molecular Pathways Underlying Axonal Degradation In Painful Diabetic Neuropathy, Shikhar Gupta '22, Kavin Suhirtharen '22

IMSAloquium Student Investigation Showcase

Painful Diabetic Neuropathy (PDN) affects 25% of diabetic patients and is a chronic disorder with a major effect on quality of life and health care costs. It can be characterized by dorsal root ganglion (DRG) nociceptor hyperexcitability, calcium overload, axonal degeneration, and loss of cutaneous intervention. Currently, the molecular mechanisms contributing to neuropathic pain in PDN are still unclear. We have shown a path forward for improving treatments.

Through quantitative proteomic analyses, we discovered that in mice with PDN induced by a high fat diet (HFD), mitochondria proteins are expressed differentially in DRG nociceptor. Electron microscopy indicated mitochondrial fragmentation and …

Disrupting Negative Developmental Trajectories Using Evidence-Based Preventive Interventions For Children With A Substance Dependent Caregiver, Diana Fishbein, Sharon Kingston Apr 2021

Disrupting Negative Developmental Trajectories Using Evidence-Based Preventive Interventions For Children With A Substance Dependent Caregiver, Diana Fishbein, Sharon Kingston

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Disrupting pathways to negative outcomes in children and adolescents who have caregivers with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is of the highest priority if we are to gain control over the opioid epidemic. This population is at very high risk for becoming the next generation of individuals with SUD, as well as other types of psychopathology and eventual juvenile/criminal justice involvement. In addition to experiencing severe/chronic adversities during their development, these youth are now further propelled toward these negative trajectories due to the COVID-19 crisis which substantially compounds the issues (e.g., estrangement from otherwise normalizing social influences, such as school, nondelinquent …

Hybridized Spirituality In Singaporean Christians, John Lim Apr 2021

Hybridized Spirituality In Singaporean Christians, John Lim

Honors Theses

Background: The doctrine of the incarnation and the “scandal of particularity” are central to Christian theology – that the transcendent God became immanent within time and space. Likewise, the church, being the contemporary expression of God, incarnates within and reflects the culture around it. How this incarnation happens is not always clear or acknowledged.

Purpose: I conceptualize the process of incarnation as the hybridization of various streams of influence. I examined the lived experiences of hybridized spirituality among Singaporean Christians.

Method: I conducted semi-structured interviews with six Singaporean Christians from the same congregation in Singapore. I used thematic analysis, informed …

Doctoral Capstone Experience In Academia And Policy Development: Nova Southeastern University, Melanie Mariani

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

An exceptional amount of literature points to the benefits of hands-on learning experiences for students enrolled in healthcare programs (Coker, 2009; Doucet, 2012; Thomas et al., 2017 & Velde, 2009). Goals of my doctoral capstone experience (DCE) included: 1) Develop the foundational requirements for Nova Southeastern University (NSU) to increase hands-on experiential student learning and potentially develop an on-site clinic in the future, and 2) Create and deploy educational materials for the students in the class of 2022 to increase their hands-on learning while taking the course virtually. The results include the creation of three sets of clinical reasoning guides …

From Bunks And Bars To Sidewalks And Skies: Support For Reentry From Incarceration, Ashley Ann Steen Apr 2021

From Bunks And Bars To Sidewalks And Skies: Support For Reentry From Incarceration, Ashley Ann Steen

Theses and Graduate Projects

Currently, there are over 2.3 million inmates in the prison system throughout the United States (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2018). Over 10,000 ex-prisoners are released from America's state and federal prisons every week and studies show that approximately two-thirds will likely be rearrested within three years of release (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2018). This scholarly project will explore the literature on why inmates face such a high rate of recidivism. It will further explore the current programming that is provided to inmates prior to release back to the community and offer a questionnaire to utilize in all reentry programs to …

The Context-Dependent Impact Of Integrin-Associated Cd151 And Other Tetraspanins On Cancer Development And Progression: A Class Of Versatile Mediators Of Cellular Function And Signaling, Tumorigenesis And Metastasis, Sonia F. Erfani, Hui Hua, Yueyin Pan, Binhua P. Zhou, Xiuwei H. Yang

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

As a family of integral membrane proteins, tetraspanins have been functionally linked to a wide spectrum of human cancers, ranging from breast, colon, lung, ovarian, prostate, and skin carcinomas to glioblastoma. CD151 is one such prominent member of the tetraspanin family recently suggested to mediate tumor development, growth, and progression in oncogenic context- and cell lineage-dependent manners. In the current review, we summarize recent advances in mechanistic understanding of the function and signaling of integrin-associated CD151 and other tetraspanins in multiple cancer types. We also highlight emerging genetic and epigenetic evidence on the intrinsic links between tetraspanins, the epithelial-mesenchymal transition …

Assessing Marginal Shallow-Water Bathymetric Information Content Of Lidar Sounding Attribute Data And Derived Seafloor Geomorphometry, Kim Lowell, Brian R. Calder Apr 2021

Assessing Marginal Shallow-Water Bathymetric Information Content Of Lidar Sounding Attribute Data And Derived Seafloor Geomorphometry, Kim Lowell, Brian R. Calder

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Shallow-water depth estimates from airborne lidar data might be improved by using sounding attribute data (SAD) and ocean geomorphometry derived from lidar soundings. Moreover, an accurate derivation of geomorphometry would be beneficial to other applications. The SAD examined here included routinely collected variables such as sounding intensity and fore/aft scan direction. Ocean-floor geomorphometry was described by slope, orientation, and pulse orthogonality that were derived from the depth estimates of bathymetry soundings using spatial extrapolation and interpolation. Four data case studies (CSs) located near Key West, Florida (United States) were the testbed for this study. To identify bathymetry soundings in lidar …

Gifts From The Dark: Learning From The Incarceration Experience [Chapter 12], Joni Schwartz, John R. Chaney

Publications and Research

While in no way supporting the systemic injustices and disparities of mass incarceration, Gifts from the Dark: Learning from the Incarceration Experience argues that we have much to learn from those who have been and are in prison. Schwartz and Chaney profile the contributions of literary giants, social activists, entrepreneurs, and other talented individuals who, despite the disorienting dilemma of incarceration, are models of adult transformative learning that positively impact the world. The authors interweave narratives with both qualitative and quantitative research references to analyze the role of solitude, writing, non-verbal communication; race and gender; physical exercise; education; technology; family …

Alaska Police Officer Use Of Deadly Force: 2010-2020, Troy C. Payne, Yevgenii Kisarauskas, Robert E. Henderson

AJiC Reports

The Alaska Department of Law Office of Special Prosecutions (OSP) and the Alaska Justice Information Center (AJiC) partnered to answer two questions regarding police officer use of deadly force. First, to what extent existing OSP investigative casefiles could be used to fully describe the nature of uses of lethal force incidents in Alaska. Second, to describe lethal use of force incidents using the available information. We found that while OSP casefiles files contained sufficient information for OSP’s purpose of determining whether criminal charges are warranted under the circumstances, the OSP casefiles lacked some information of interest to policymakers and the …
