DNA is a compelling alternative to non-volatile information storage technologies due to its information density, stability, and energy efficiency. Previous studies have used artificially synthesized DNA to store data and automated next-generation sequencing to read it back. Here, we report digital Nucleic Acid Memory (dNAM) for applications that require a limited amount of data to have high information density, redundancy, and copy number. In dNAM, data is encoded by selecting combinations of single-stranded DNA with (1) or without (0) docking-site domains. When self-assembled with scaffold DNA, staple strands form DNA origami breadboards. Information encoded into the breadboards is read by …

Does Alcohol Consumption Increase Risk-Taking While Gambling? A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Tori Horn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Alcohol is often consumed while gambling and drinking while gambling has fueled considerable discussion about the effects of alcohol consumption on risk taking and wagering intensity. Laboratory studies designed to test this argument have not provided conclusive answers. A contributing factor for these ambiguous findings among studies may be their attention to different levels of blood alcohol concentration (BAC) among participants. The effects of BAC on risk taking while gambling has yet to be evaluated. We completed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature. Eighteen articles (N = 1,611) meeting inclusion criteria were identified. The overall Hedges’ g value …

Microbial Challenge Studies Of Radio Frequency Heating For Dairy Powders And Gaseous Technologies For Spices, Xinyao Wei
Microbial Challenge Studies Of Radio Frequency Heating For Dairy Powders And Gaseous Technologies For Spices, Xinyao Wei
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Persistence, thermal resistance, and survival of Salmonella in low moisture foods (LMF) have resulted in several foodborne illness outbreaks. Both existing and novel pasteurization technologies need to be validated for microbial safety of LMF. In this dissertation, a framework for using radio frequency (RF) heating to enhance microbial safety of milk powders and egg white powder was established. Thermal inactivation kinetics of Salmonella in milk powders were determined to guide the dairy industry for identifying thermal processing conditions for pasteurization. Storage time showed no effect on the thermal resistance of Salmonella, which can simplify the process validation study in …

Improving Accuracy Of Unmanned Aerial System Thermal Infrared Remote Sensing For Use In Energy Balance Models In Agriculture Applications, Mitchell S. Maguire, C.M.U. Neale, Wayne E. Woldt
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Unmanned aerial system (UAS) remote sensing has rapidly expanded in recent years, leading to the development of several multispectral and thermal infrared sensors suitable for UAS integration. Remotely sensed thermal infrared imagery has been used to detect crop water stress and manage irrigation by leveraging the increased thermal signatures of water stressed plants. Thermal infrared cameras suitable for UAS remote sensing are often uncooled microbolometers. This type of thermal camera is subject to inaccuracies not typically present in cooled thermal cameras. In addition, atmospheric interference also may present inaccuracies in measuring surface temperature. In this study, a UAS with integrated …

Short And Long Term Effects Of Lime And Gypsum Applications On Acid Soils In A Water-Limited Environment: 3. Soil Solution Chemistry, Geoff Anderson, Shahab Pathan, David Hall, Rajesh Sharma, James Easton
Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
Aluminum (Al) toxicity imposes a significant limitation to crop production in South Western Australia. This paper examines the impact of surface-applied lime and gypsum on soil solution chemistry in the short term (1 year) and the long-term (10 years) in water limited environments. In the experiments, we measured soil solution chemistry using a paste extract on soil profile samples collected to a depth of 50 cm. We then used the chemical equilibrium model MINTEQ to predict the presence and relative concentrations of Al species that are toxic to root growth (Al associated with Al3+ and AlOH2 or Toxic-Al) and less …
From Molecules To Mountains: A Multi-Proxy Investigation Into Ancient Climate And Topography Of The Pacific Northwest, Usa, Alex Mclean
Dissertations and Theses
The modern Cascades are a north-south striking mountain range that intercepts Pacific Ocean-derived moisture resulting in orographic precipitation on the western flank and a relatively arid rain shadow in the lee. Because of the strong coupling between topography and climate and consistent moisture source (Pacific Ocean) throughout the year, the region is ideally situated for paleoclimate studies that utilize the isotopic composition (δ18O and δD) of meteoric water to determine when uplifts occurred. Here, I synthesize the spatial and temporal evolution of stable isotopes in paleowater proxies across the Pacific Northwest during the Cenozoic. New volcanic glass (δD) …

We present a measurement of Rk+ , the branching fraction ratio B(B → K+μ+μ−)=B(B → K*e+e−),, for both charged and neutral B mesons. The ratio for the charged case R K* + is the first measurement ever performed. In addition, we report absolute branching fractions for the individual modes in bins of the squared dilepton invariant mass q2. The analysis is based on a data sample of 711 fb−1, containing 772 × 106 BB̅ events, recorded at the ϒ(4S) resonance …

There are myriads of ions that are deemed too short-lived to be experimentally accessible. One of them is SF6+. It has never been observed, although not for lack of trying. We demonstrate that long-lived SF6+ can be formed by doping charged helium nanodroplets (HNDs) with sulfur hexafluoride; excess helium is then gently stripped from the doped HNDs by collisions with helium gas. The ion is identified by high-resolution mass spectrometry (resolution m/Dm = 15000), the close agreement between the expected and observed yield of ions that contain minor sulfur isotopes, and collision-induced dissociation …

Flow Dynamics In A Vadose Shaft – A Case Study From The Hochschwab Karst Massif (Northern Calcareous Alps, Austria), Eva Kaminsky, Lukas Plan, Thomas Wagner, Barbara Funk, Pauline Oberender
International Journal of Speleology
Karst aquifers are highly vulnerable to contamination due to quick water flow through conduits. Their high heterogeneity and the poorly known infiltration effect of the vadose zone make quantification of recharge processes difficult. This study characterizes the water flow and storage in the upper vadose zone with almost four years monitoring of a permanent stream in a vadose shaft (Furtowischacht). Its small catchment of 4,500 m² is located in a former glaciated high Alpine environment (Hochschwab, Austria). High discharge fluctuations between 0.002 and 19 l/s, relatively high hydrograph recession coefficients, and transit velocities between 0.0015 and 2.4 m/s estimated with …
Influences Of Cultural Similarities And Differences On Coworker Relationships And Perceived Levels Of Workplace Psychological Stress, Natalie Hidaka
Influences Of Cultural Similarities And Differences On Coworker Relationships And Perceived Levels Of Workplace Psychological Stress, Natalie Hidaka
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
One of the most important environments for many adults is the workplace, and we increasingly find co-workers with a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. Different cultural backgrounds must communicate and collaborate for an effective team to meet the common goal for a workplace. However, different cultural values and practices in one place often create misunderstandings and fraught challenges. One of the significant differences in culture is how people interact socially and their primary motivation when interacting with others. When independent and interdependent cultural backgrounds are considered, it is suggested that interdependent cultures tend to focus on relationship-preserving while independent cultures …

The pygmy sloth, endemic to the island of Escudo de Veraguas is significantly understudied in regard to ecological requirements, life history and reproduction. As a result their conservation efforts are at the bare minimum. They are critically endangered as a result of their restricted range and regular habitat destruction of their mangrove habitats from the local communities who seasonally visit the island. My poster discusses a few strategies which may be potential options for their successful conservation without being detrimental to those whom the island rightfully belongs to.

The half-life of a radioactive isotope can be defined as the amount of time that it takes for said isotope to decay to half of its original value. Radioactive isotopes have a set half-life, this helps scientists create more precise measurements and predictions during experiments because of the set timeline for each specific isotope. The half-life of Thallium-204 is recorded in the experiments to create a random number generator based off of the small spread of decay amounts during different time segments. During the experiments, a Geiger–Müller detector was used to record the half-life of Thallium-204. While doing such experiments, …
