INTRODUCTION: Obesity and type 2 Diabetes (T2D) are both associated with greater bone mineral density (BMD) but increased risk of fractures. The effect of the combination of both conditions on bone metabolism, microarchitecture, and strength in the obese population remains unknown.

METHODS: Data from 112 obese men were collected. Bone turnover and biochemical markers were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, body composition and BMD at all sites were assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, whereas bone microarchitecture and strength (stiffness and failure load) were measured by high-resolution peripheral computed tomography. Data were compared among metabolically healthy obese (MHO) and metabolically …

Transcribed nucleotide repeat expansions form detectable RNA foci in patient cells that contribute to disease pathogenesis. The most widely used method for detecting RNA foci, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), is powerful but can suffer from issues related to signal above background. Here we developed a repeat-specific form of hybridization chain reaction (R-HCR) as an alternative method for detection of repeat RNA foci in two neurodegenerative disorders: C9orf72 associated ALS and frontotemporal dementia (C9 ALS/FTD) and Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome. R-HCR to both G4C2 and CGG repeats exhibited comparable specificity but > 40 × sensitivity compared to FISH, …

Implicit Learning In Preschoolers With And Without Developmental Language Disorder, Abigail Tolomei, Josie Johnson, Katharine Ross, Genesis Ocegueda Enciso, Carolyn Quam, Aminah Kariye, Molly Franz, Rachel Atkinson

Student Research Symposium

The purpose of this study was to compare implicit learning of sound categories across preschoolers with and without developmental language disorder (DLD), in order to test the Procedural Deficit Hypothesis (Lum, Conti-Ramsden, Page, & Ullman, 2012), which argues that procedural memory, the basis for implicit learning, is the core deficit in DLD. We tested 52 preschoolers in total, 26 with typical language development (TLD), and 26 with DLD. Preschoolers participated in a computer-based task assessing implicit mapping of sounds to meanings. We predicted that children with DLD would show deficits in implicit learning relative to children with TLD. Results were …

Farmer Cooperatives "Take Cover": The Capper-Volstead Exemption Is Under Siege, Donald M. Barnes, Jay L. Levine

Arkansas Law Review

"When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization." There can be little dispute that food production is of vital interest to any nation’s security and economy. For this reason, the United States Congress, like many other legislatures around the world, has accorded special treatment to the agricultural industry, and particularly to farmers. One example of this special treatment is the Capper-Volstead Act, which provides farmers with immunity from antitrust liability for joint conduct undertaken by and through an “association” of producers.

A Reinforcement Learning Approach To Printer Diagnostics, Hp Inc

Defensive Publications Series

Automating Printer Diagnostics to solve customer issues presents lot of challenges. If we can solve this

problem in a reliable way, it can help to save costs which are incur for every phone call made to call

agents by customers. Instead of customer calling a support agent, a tool should guide customers (either

residing at customer’s computer or over cloud) how to fix those issues. There are rule-based and Machine

learning based solutions developed to solve this issue using call agent record /Telemetry, but to the

best of our knowledge this problem has not been solved reliably. We present a …

The Danger Of Apathy: College Students' Receipt Of Mumps Vaccine During An Outbreak, Laura A. Keane Apr 2021

The Danger Of Apathy: College Students' Receipt Of Mumps Vaccine During An Outbreak, Laura A. Keane

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

A mumps outbreak occurred on the James Madison University campus in Harrisonburg, Virginia, during the Spring 2018 semester. For many of the students, it was probably the first time they had to decide on their own whether or not to receive a vaccine. This study examined the relationships between students’ general vaccine acceptance; measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine acceptance; vaccine knowledge; and intent to receive/receipt of the MMR booster. An explanatory, cross-sectional study was distributed in Fall 2019 to students in two health courses (n = 243). For students who were enrolled during the Spring 2018 semester, the …

Early Mobility In The Intensive Care Unit: An Integrative Review On Safe Practices, Jessica Poehler Apr 2021

Early Mobility In The Intensive Care Unit: An Integrative Review On Safe Practices, Jessica Poehler

Nursing Masters Papers

The effects of immobility in the intensive care unit (ICU) lead to significant short and long-term complications among patients. Early mobility practices positively impact patients’ cognitive and physical outcomes while in the ICU and post ICU discharge; however, patient safety barriers exist with implementing early mobility interventions. An integrative literature review was completed to summarize early mobility practices among individuals in the ICU, adverse safety events that occurred during mobilizing, and best practices to prevent adverse safety events from occurring. Using CINAHL, PubMed, OVID, and ProQuest, eleven articles were analyzed for level and quality of evidence, including two randomized controlled …

Sunk Or Dunk?: An Empirical Analysis Of The Effect Of Sunk Cost Fallacy In Professional Basketball, Hailey Dicicco

Business and Economics Presentations

This project is divided into two sections. The first section is a comparison between the NBA and WNBA, using performance metrics from game statistics. I researched the history of women in sports and specifically read about how women first became integrated into the game of soccer. In the regression for section one, we used a few selected performance metrics and minutes in order to observe any relationships between specific skills and minutes. We also focused on the difference between the leagues in terms of what game stats are more or less significant.

In the second section of this paper, we …

Look At Her: The Subversive Spectacle Of Grande Dame Guignol Cinema, Michelle Smith Apr 2021

Look At Her: The Subversive Spectacle Of Grande Dame Guignol Cinema, Michelle Smith

English Theses

While the Grande Dame Guignol films of the early 1960s served in their time to capitalize on the reputations of aging female stars and the growing popularity of the horror genre, an updated reading of this subgenre proves that it is rich with social critique regarding the feminine experience, social performance, and the tendencies of classical Hollywood cinema that promote a dominant, patriarchal social narrative. While many popular and critical responses diminish them as “psycho-biddy” or “hagsploitation” films, the Grande Dame Guignol tradition’s transformation of its actresses from glamorous icons to unrecognizable villains rejects such limiting appraisals by focusing on …

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Guidelines for genetic testing have been established for multiple tumor types, frequently indicating the most confident molecularly targeted treatment options. However, considering the often-complex presentation of individual cancer patients, in addition to the combinatorial complexity and inherent uncertainties of molecular findings, deriving optimal treatment strategies frequently becomes very challenging. Here, we report a comprehensive analysis of a 68-year-old male with metastatic prostate cancer, encompassing pathology and MRI findings, transcriptomic results, and key genomics findings from whole-exome sequencing, both somatic aberrations and germline variants. We identify multiple somatic aberrations that are known to be enriched in prostate cancer, including a deletion …

Obesity during pregnancy increases the risk for maternal complications like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and maternal inflammation. Maternal obesity also increases the risk of childhood obesity, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and diabetes to the offspring. Increased circulating free fatty acids (FFAs) in obesity due to adipose tissue lipolysis induces lipoapoptosis to hepatocytes, cholangiocytes, and pancreatic-β-cells. During the third trimester of human pregnancy, there is an increase in maternal lipolysis and release of FFAs into the circulation. It is currently unknown if increased FFAs during gestation as a result of maternal obesity cause placental cell lipoapoptosis. Increased exposure of FFAs during maternal …
