Healthcare For All Colors: Anti-Racism In Medical Professions, Elise Wang
Healthcare For All Colors: Anti-Racism In Medical Professions, Elise Wang
BU Well
Racism in the United States' healthcare system has a longstanding history and exists at both the macro and microlevel. Medical professionals have a responsibility to be anti-racist in their practices. Healthcare providers and organizations can create a more equitable and beneficial medical experience for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) patients through anti racism praxis, increasing the health literacy of patients, and shifting power to patients to equalize the provider-patient dynamic. While these initiatives cannot bring the systemic change needed to fully eradicate racism from medicine, it will join providers and patients together in the fight against interpersonal, and …
Animals On Drugs: The Role Of Pharmacists In Veterinary Medicine, Kylie Kelley
Animals On Drugs: The Role Of Pharmacists In Veterinary Medicine, Kylie Kelley
BU Well
With medication errors and unpreparedness of pharmacists in handling pet prescriptions becoming more prevalent, to compensate the deficiency there should be an increase in education and interprofessional collaboration. By providing pharmacists with a thorough education of animal pharmacology, pharmacists would more effectively thrive within their scope of practice and improve pet safety and collaboration with other veterinary healthcare providers. Whether a student pharmacist wants to specialize in veterinary pharmacy or retail pharmacy, it is important for the animal’s well-being that someone who verifies the prescriptions does so correctly and with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions for animal patients.

Improving Cough And Cold Otc Medication Use For Children In Hardin County, Kelly M. Kern, Molly Lipson
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Background: Ohio struggles with high infant mortality rates. This project was designed to combat incorrect use of cough and cold over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Parents or caregivers, especially those with low health literacy, often use these medications incorrectly in infants, sometimes leading to a fatal outcome.
Methods: Utilizing a three-pronged approach, this IRB-approved project addresses the issue of incorrect cough and cold OTC medications use for infants in Hardin County. Passive education was provided to community members via social media/flyers, educational interventions were performed with community members (virtual or in-person), and continuing professional development (CPD) was provided to pharmacists and pharmacy …

Classification Of Student Developed Annual Goals, Han Pham, John Mullin
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Objective: This study categorizes goals (personal vs professional and long vs short-term) of student pharmacists. An increase in the proportion of long-term, professional goals is expected as students advance through the program.
Methods: Annual student goals were classified into categories (personal vs professional and long vs short term). Definitions were developed and a beta-test was conducted to confirm interpretations were consistent between raters. Multiple one-tail Z-tests with Bonferroni correction were used to compare the proportion of personal/professional and short-term/long-term goals for P1 students to the proportion of each of the classes of P2-P5 for the years of 2018 and 2019, …

We are experiencing troubled times with the Coronavirus pandemic. There has been an incredible number of deaths across the world, with 1,963 deaths in Idaho as of April 01, 2021 (coronavirus.Idaho.gov, 2021). To curb the spread of disease, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have established recommendations for all Americans, including wearing a face-covering (over nose and mouth) in public and maintaining a physical distance of at least 6 feet between people (CDC, 2020). The research project focused on whether adults on campus at Boise State University were following social distancing protocols and wearing masks. Based on the …

An increase in research of brain activity via means of Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) and Electroencephalogram (EEG) is creating additional opportunity for the study and research of biometric data. Systems that rely on authentication to grant access to sensitive information now use biometric information such as fingerprints and facial recognition to permit users into these systems. BCI's and EEG's introduce additional means of providing brain activity by measuring local electrical activity within the brain and skull, respectively. Both BCI and EEG can be used as such biometric data in order to prove two important points of truth in these systems, …

Multi-Layer Shallow Water Model, Chithkala Dhulipati, Michal Kopera
2021 Undergraduate Research Showcase
In this work, we ran test simulations of different scenarios of the multi-layer shallow-water model and visualized the results in ParaView. Further, the results were compared to the reference solution, the HYCOM model, to see if Galerkin methods are competitive enough with other established numerical methods used for ocean modeling. Initially, we simulated a two-dimensional wave in shallow water equations and then expanded it into a two-dimensional wave in a two-layer system. We designed the two-layer model such that each layer had a different density. Further, we set up a perturbation on the interface between the layers. We could see …

Testing The Validity Of Bogus Basin Ponderosa Pines As An Atmospheric Co2 Climate Proxy, Alison Phillips, Elizabeth Crowther, Linda Reynard, Matthew Kohn
2021 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Tree ring growth and 13 C/12 C isotope compositions have frequently been used as a climate proxy to analyze the paleo atmosphere. The effect of carbon dioxide can be seen by analyzing both the tree ring width and the carbon isotope composition (Stuiver & Quay 1984). In this study we test the validity of previous assessments that plants can serve as pCO2 indicators (McCarroll & Loader 2004, Cui & Schubert 2016). This record of change over time will identify the effects anthropogenic climate change can have on the carbon isotope signature of these Bogus Basin trees. Creating a …

Understanding how mountain belts form requires identifying the ages of the rocks within them. The granitic rocks of the Tso Morari massif are thought to have formed ~450-500 million years ago (Ma), but there are few studies, and granites elsewhere in the Himalaya are as young as ~425 Ma. Here, we image and date zircon (ZrSiO4) grains from a metamorphosed granite of the Tso Morari massif to gain a better understanding of the age of the intrusion and origin of the zircon.
Zircon crystals were separated, mounted in epoxy, polished, and imaged using cathodoluminescence (CL), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy …

The Opportunities And Challenges Of Internet Of Things Evidence In Regard To Criminal Investigations, Nathan Mcclaran
Honors Theses
As internet-connected devices become more prevalent, the need for police and law enforcement to be able to utilize these devices when solving crimes steadily increases. Law enforcement agencies are already aware of the opportunities and challenges when interacting with computers and mobile cellular devices, but many agencies are unable to utilize these avenues of evidence because of limited access to resources able to forensically examine computing devices. In addition, the introduction of internet of things devices, such as Amazon Alexa and other microphone or camera connected devices, allows new opportunities for law enforcement agencies to gather digital forensic evidence either …

Problem: Intravenous (IV) medication errors account for one-third of the medication errors made by nurses in the United States. A measure to combat medication errors is the development of IV pump integration where the IV pump is electronically connected to the electronic medical record (EMR). With IV pump integration, the nurse is responsible for turning on the pump, scanning the medication and the IV pump, and confirming in the EMR. Human error is removed when the IV pump integration system automatically programs and starts the IV pump. This is a technical system which requires the nurse to have expertise in …

Is United States’ Economic Power In Decline? Can China Replace The U.S. As The World’S Next Economic Superpower?, Islam Bakirci
Dissertations
The decline of American economic power has been passionately debated for decades. Starting from the Kennedy administration, there were many cases that declinist scholars interpreted as the beginning of American economic power decline. The financial crisis of 2007-09 is the latest case of the same debate. However, unlike the previous cases, declinist scholars who support the idea of U.S. economic power is in decline after the financial crisis, strongly believe that this time the decline is different. This time the decline is real. In addition, the same scholars also argue that China, as an economic challenger which is different from …

Association Between Type Of Trauma And Type Of Juvenile Criminal Charges, Andrea Johnson
2021 Undergraduate Research Showcase
ACE’s scores have become an index of trauma, quantifying traumatic experiences for youth. Many families and by extension children, are deeply affected by trauma, which then increases the likelihood of this continuing through the generations. Certain score numbers and types can be related to specific behavioral and social issues, which in turn, can lead to a number of prolonged repercussions. One way of seeing these long-term results can be through the study of generational trauma, in which there are repeated repercussions such as incarceration, repeated abuse and unfinished education. According to current studies, trauma can be passed on to children …

The goal of this research was to determine the effectiveness of lead shielding on pediatric patients when considering misplacement errors and repeat exposures. The dose to the patient's gonads when lead shielding was utilized was measured as well as the dose to the patient without any shielding. To keep data consistent, a constant kilovoltage peak (kVp), Milliampere-seconds (mAs), and collimation size were used. The null hypothesis for this experiment was that there would not be a significant difference in dose to the patient when utilizing a lead shield to protect the gonadal region. When the data was analyzed, the null …
