Protocol For Conducting Procedural Skills Training With Simulators: A Critical Proposal, Gleyvis Coro-Montanet, Julia Sánchez-Ituarte, Ana De La Hoz-Calvo, María Jesús Pardo-Monedero
Higher Learning Research Communications
Task trainer simulators are often used in medical programs for bachelor’s degree students when teaching procedural skills. They provide the opportunity to practice dangerous maneuvers that students are not ready to perform on real patients yet. The rise of technology has vastly expanded the availability of these devices for use in teaching. To develop a protocol that would account for the complexities of psychomotor learning, based on student progress, and improve training quality, we designed a protocol for the bachelor’s degree program in dentistry. We justify the key elements of the proposal and explain the full working protocol.

Students will construct a food web diagram of a Minimata Bay ecosystem and then they will create a graph of mercury concentrations versus food chain position. This lesson also incorporates the idea of environmental justice.
"Rev." Donald Trump And The Christian Right — A Secular Transformation Of The Great Awakening Heritage, John Francis Burke
"Rev." Donald Trump And The Christian Right — A Secular Transformation Of The Great Awakening Heritage, John Francis Burke
Political Science Faculty Research
Over the past five years, the curious relationship between Donald Trump and many conservative evangelicals has been at the intersection of US religion and politics. Explanations for this curious linkage include:
• John Fea’s accent on the historical fear of evangelicals of the other.
• Ben Howe’s claim that evangelicals have chosen power over values.
• Whitehead and Perry’s articulation of a U.S. Christian nationalism.
• Kristin Kobes Du Mez’s feminist critique of U.S. Christian masculinity.
• Timothy Carney’s connection between social collapse and Trumpism.
This paper argues that each of these arguments capture important parts of the Trump-evangelical nexus, …

Faculty Research 2021
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a REDOX cofactor and metabolite essential for neuronal survival. Glaucoma is a common neurodegenerative disease in which neuronal levels of NAD decline. We assess the effects of nicotinamide (a precursor to NAD) on retinal ganglion cells (the affected neuron in glaucoma) in normal physiological conditions and across a range of glaucoma relevant insults including mitochondrial stress and axon degenerative insults. We demonstrate retinal ganglion cell somal, axonal, and dendritic neuroprotection by nicotinamide in rodent models which represent isolated ocular hypertensive, axon degenerative, and mitochondrial degenerative insults. We performed metabolomics enriched for small molecular weight metabolites …

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research
Introduction: Speakers naturally produce prosodic variations depending on their emotional state. Receptive prosody has several processing stages. We aimed to conduct lesion-symptom mapping to determine whether damage (core infarct or hypoperfusion) to specific brain areas was associated with receptive aprosodia or with impairment at different processing stages in individuals with acute right hemisphere stroke. We also aimed to determine whether different subtypes of receptive aprosodia exist that are characterized by distinctive behavioral performance patterns.
Methods: Twenty patients with receptive aprosodia following right hemisphere ischemic stroke were enrolled within five days of stroke; clinical imaging was acquired. Participants completed …
What Do They Know? Police Experiences With Hate Crime In Arkansas, Randi Marie Latiolais
What Do They Know? Police Experiences With Hate Crime In Arkansas, Randi Marie Latiolais
Theses and Dissertations
Hate crimes are likely underreported due to victim’s understanding and reluctance to reporting hate crimes. Few studies have looked at how police attitudes and experiences can affect the way officers report incidents, especially for hate crimes. This Thesis explored police definitions and perceptions of hate crime to ascertain the degree to which these experiences might affect police responses to hate crime (e.g., reporting, investigation, protective actions for victims) and their interactions with victims. A thematic content analysis identified patterns in the definitions and experiences police officers from Pulaski County (AR) have regarding hate crimes. A snowball sampling technique resulted in …
Life Along The Color Line In Little Rock: An Archeological Investigation Of Two Sites On South Arch Street, Devin Sorrows
Life Along The Color Line In Little Rock: An Archeological Investigation Of Two Sites On South Arch Street, Devin Sorrows
Theses and Dissertations
The recent unearthing of two archeological sites in Little Rock, Arkansas revealed objects imbued with symbolism, complexity, and memory. The people who left these objects behind were residents of the West Ninth Street neighborhood, an epicenter of African American social and economic activity in central Arkansas from the middle nineteenth through the late twentieth centuries. Utilizing multidisciplinary avenues, including W.E.B. Du Bois’ metaphor of the color line, archeology, and extensive archival research, this thesis investigated the material culture of the two sites. The historic record provided important contextual elements to the stories of the Arch Street residents, while the archeological …

Female sterilization is the second most common contraceptive method used by women in the U.S.. Historically, the procedure was done via laparoscopic surgery. However, in 2002, Bayer’s new female contraceptive device called Essure was approved by the FDA, allowing hysteroscopic sterilization. The Essure device is essentially a small metal coil that is inserted into each fallopian tube with the intention of causing swelling and scarring that closes off the tubes. The device was attractive for many women and physicians because the procedure could be performed in a doctor’s office rather than an operating room. As of 2015, 750,000 women had …
Tuberculosis And Poor Health Among Migrant And Seasonal Farmworkers In The United States, Lucy Cummins
Tuberculosis And Poor Health Among Migrant And Seasonal Farmworkers In The United States, Lucy Cummins
Health Studies Capstones
The following paper will explore the prevalence of TB among migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the United States, and the systemic forces that contribute to that prevalence. Cyclical of poverty, dangerous working conditions, and barriers to healthcare overall have all led to increased risk of TB infection for farmworkers and their families. Moreover, structural violence traps these farmworkers in conditions of increased risk that have a major impact on their general health. Thus, the issue of TB is not a single issue, but one that relates to a range of social, economic, and political factors. Improving TB outcomes for farmworkers …
Child Support And Joint Physical Custody, Raymond C. O'Brien
Child Support And Joint Physical Custody, Raymond C. O'Brien
Catholic University Law Review
Child custody has evolved to the point where, at a minimum, states provide a mediated process by which parents may formulate parenting plans with court-appointed assistance. At a maximum state legislatures and courts increasingly consider joint physical custody awards. While joint physical custody safeguards the fundamental rights of parents, it nonetheless prompts practical concerns in awarding child support. Today, child support begins with state statutory guidelines, but the guidelines often fail to adequately address the economic consequences of two complete residences, one supported by a parent with fewer economic resources, and the fact that oftentimes the child drifts from one …
Whose Highest And Best? Including Economic Development And Individual Landownership In The Highest And Best Use Standard, Brigid Sawyer
Whose Highest And Best? Including Economic Development And Individual Landownership In The Highest And Best Use Standard, Brigid Sawyer
Catholic University Law Review
Real property is a finite resource. As a result, two theories of land use most frequently in tension are economic development and individual land ownership. In tracing key places in American history where these two theories conflict, it is seen that economic development is often prioritized over individual land ownership. This Comment analyzes the connections between the Founding Era philosophy on property law, Native American land takings, and eminent domain takings and proposes a new definition of the highest and best use valuation standard, one that accounts for both economic development and individual land ownership. This new standard allows both …

The Electoral Success And Representation Of Minorities: Different Cost Of Voting Scenarios, Shalisha M. Hill
Honors Capstones
This research tests whether minorities are underrepresented in state legislatures due to restrictive state election laws that hinder voting. Some states like Oregon make it easier for citizens to vote and other states like Texas make it more difficult. The Cost of Voting Index (COVI) is a measurement of the electoral/institutional restrictiveness of each state and values are available for presidential election years from 1996 to 2020. Previous research has revealed that the amount of voting restrictions that citizens face makes it harder for them to vote (Li, Pomante Schraufnagel, 2018). What is less understood is whether restrictions hurt Blacks …

The Federal Rule Of Civil Procedure 37(E) And Achieving Uniformity Of Case Law On Sanctions For Esi Spoliation: Focusing On The “Intent To Deprive” Culpability Under Rule 37(E)(2), Jung Won Jun, Rockyoun Ihm
Catholic University Law Review
Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 37(e) was adopted in 2015 primarily to resolve the circuit split and promote uniformity of case law on ESI (electronically stored information) spoliation sanctions. This Article examines relevant case law under the new Rule 37(e) and finds that courts have treated similar spoliation conduct differently due to the lack of a clear standard for finding the spoliator's intent to deprive another party of the use of the destroyed ESI at issue. This inconsistency has been exacerbated by the courts’ inconsistent reliance on their inherent authority to sanction based on bad faith analyses. Therefore, this Article …

Terrestrial Lidar Scanning And Gaming Engines: Using Unity3d To Visualize High-Resolution Point Clouds From Big Bat Cave, Kentucky, Jeffrey Aaron Baggett
Theses and Dissertations
Terrestrial LiDAR scanning has become a staple of modern speleological research and mapping due to its increasing availability, rapid deployment, and ability to collect large quantities of spatial data in a short period of time. In addition to spatial data, LiDAR scanners’ ability to record reflection intensity is of interest in the geoscience community as a proxy for surface reflectivity and as a means of aiding in visualizations when a lack of lighting prevents the use of photography at a useful scale. In this study, a methodology for rendering a stereoscopic, real-time rendering of a 10 scan, 425-million point portion …

“There Is No More Sacred Place:” Healing And Faith In Chaplaincy And Religious Hospitals, Annalise Mangone
Honors Theses
For spiritual care providers and spiritual care systems, truly effective medical treatment cannot exist without seeking to look after not only the physical needs of those who are ill, but also the emotional, existential, and spiritual needs of all those in the hospital, including not only patients but also their families and care providers. Through this lens of holistic, whole-person care, spiritual care providers move themselves beyond the status of religious figures or groups, and present themselves as conduits and nodes of connection and expression for the feelings of bereavement, grief, and helplessness. This healing builds up within patients, families, …

Lesson Plan - Cities As Systems, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 01: Introduction to Urban Ecology
This lesson is designed to elicit student preconceptions about cities, introduce the idea of cities as systems, and introduce the driving question for the entire year. The lesson begins with a brainstorm where the teacher leads a “word splash” about the word city. Then in order to encourage students to start thinking of cities as systems, student groups draw up plans (or construct models) of city neighborhoods and work to fit these neighborhoods into a city. To understand the time aspect of systems (and cities), these student groups are provided with imaginary (but possible) events that happen to their constructed …
