Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Using in vivo muscle stem cell (satellite cell)-specific extracellular vesicle (EV) tracking, satellite cell depletion, in vitro cell culture, and single-cell RNA sequencing, we show satellite cells communicate with other cells in skeletal muscle during mechanical overload. Early satellite cell EV communication primes the muscle milieu for proper long-term extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition and is sufficient to support sustained hypertrophy in adult mice, even in the absence of fusion to muscle fibers. Satellite cells modulate chemokine gene expression across cell types within the first few days of loading, and EV delivery of miR 206 to fibrogenic cells represses Wisp1 expression …

Language Acquisition Intervention: A Prototype In Supplemental Children's Education Through Media, Kelly A. Vidovic Apr 2021

Language Acquisition Intervention: A Prototype In Supplemental Children's Education Through Media, Kelly A. Vidovic

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this project is to design a game which will help narrow the divide in child development between households and improve vocabulary skills. It has been found that there is a positive correlation between parent’s speaking with their children and the child’s educational development, particularly in language (Fernald, Marchman, & Weisleder, 2013). This is thought to be a result of the child being exposed to more words more often, which aids in their language development and continues to assist in their educational development over time. Further studies have also indicated that early life interventions’, such as educational tv …

Building Theories By Building Things, Shakayla Moran, Leslie Atkins Elliott, Stephen Crowley, Emily Hansen Apr 2021

Building Theories By Building Things, Shakayla Moran, Leslie Atkins Elliott, Stephen Crowley, Emily Hansen

2021 Undergraduate Research Showcase

In the science classroom, curriculum often engages students in science experiments with predetermined materials and scaffolded instructions in order to obtain a designated outcome. However, science experiments like this focus on the product of experiment but not the process of designing an experiment. Implicit in these labs is that the goal of the science classroom is to learn specific scientific content instead of learning how to build theories and develop experiments in support of those. If, instead, we want science classes that support students in developing, vetting and refining theories, our research suggests that increased student agency around materials and …

Carbon Fiber Monocoque Chassis Redesign, Todd E. Durham, Lauren M. Bangert, Matthew L. Mccoy

Honors Capstones

The NIU Supermileage Team develops ultra-energy efficient gas and electric vehicles. In the past, the team has created their vehicle using an aluminum tubing frame and carbon fiber shell. The carbon fiber shell is not load bearing and only acts as an aerodynamic shape for the vehicle, allowing it to slice through the air efficiently by minimizing drag due to air resistance and turbulence in the form of eddy currents. The primary goal is to develop a monocoque chassis for the Supermileage Team. A monocoque chassis is a body type in which the vehicle is composed of a singular, unibody …

Fireworks degrade air quality, reduce visibility, alter atmospheric chemistry, and cause short-term adverse health effects. However, there have not been any comprehensive physicochemical and optical measurements of fireworks and their associated impacts in a Southeast Asia megacity, where fireworks are a regular part of the culture. Size-resolved particulate matter (PM) measurements were made before, during, and after New Year 2019 at the Manila Observatory in Quezon City, Philippines, as part of the Cloud, Aerosol, and Monsoon Processes Philippines Experiment (CAMP2Ex). A high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) recorded a substantial increase in backscattered signal associated with high aerosol loading ∼440 m above the …

Impact Of A Telephone-Based Care Management Program On Health Outcomes For Patients With Type 2 Diabetes And Hypertension, Abbegail Miller

DNP Projects

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension (HTN) were the 7th leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for over 160,000 deaths annually. Complications related to T2DM and HTN are preventable with lifestyle modifications and medications. However, research has shown that lack of patient self-management, poor medication adherence, and physician time restraints limit disease improvement. A telephone-based care management program (CMP) provides a solution to meeting patient needs. Purpose: The purpose of this scholarly project was to evaluate individual biomarkers for glycemic and HTN control, as well as self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) over one year of …

The Trans Issue, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 2021

The Trans Issue, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The first time that I remember the issue of gender and sport being raised was sometime in the 1960s when charges surfaced at the Olympics concerning the East German women’s track and field team. Their success led some in the west, especially the Americans, to charge that some female athletes from East Germany and the Soviet Union were, in fact, males. For the most part, I dismissed these claims as the complaints of bad losers. Others treated the charges more seriously, and sex tests came to the European Games in 1966 and the Olympic Games in 1968.

Historical Hindsight And The Media In Critical Elections, Jacob Scobee Apr 2021

Historical Hindsight And The Media In Critical Elections, Jacob Scobee

Undergraduate Theses

This thesis will aim to investigate the topics of critical elections and why we view them as such. It aims to closely examine two key elections, the 1964 election won by a Democrat, and the 1980 election won by a Republican, researching both the historical context of these elections that may have led them to become critical, and whether the way in which the elections were covered may provide any insight. To do this the editorial section of three newspapers, The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and LA Times, will be examined to see if rhetoric varied at all between …

Music And Nationalism: The Complex Relationships Of Sibelius, Bach And Shostakovich With Their Respective Countries, Deena Rizkalla Apr 2021

Music And Nationalism: The Complex Relationships Of Sibelius, Bach And Shostakovich With Their Respective Countries, Deena Rizkalla

Recital Papers

One of the most defining characteristics of the nineteenth century is the global phenomenon of nationalism. In the wake of the French Revolution, countries began to conceive of national self-determination, a concept which “holds that every ‘nation,’ a unified community of people with a desire and capacity for self-governance, is entitled to exclusive control of its own territorial state” (Keitner 2007, 2). In order to strengthen national identity, countries needed to foster a sense of belonging in their population, and the most prominent way they achieved that was through the cultivation of culture. Literature, art, and music bonded people together …

Comparing Parameters In Growth Models, Payton Lyons, Andrii Zaiats, Trevor Caughlin Apr 2021

Comparing Parameters In Growth Models, Payton Lyons, Andrii Zaiats, Trevor Caughlin

2021 Undergraduate Research Showcase

Parameters are of significant importance when using non-linearized models. A small shift in one parameter could change an accurate model to an inaccurate one. But to what extent can these parameters change and not affect the accuracy of the model? This question can  be answered by setting a specific value in the model to reach and then output the time it took each model to arrive at that value holding all else equal. In these simulations the value used was K/2, which is the half the max population. The initial population and growth rate were the two parameters that were …

Dnp Final Report: The Impact Of Mindfulness Training On Stress, Burnout, And Mindfulness, Denise Mcnulty Apr 2021

Dnp Final Report: The Impact Of Mindfulness Training On Stress, Burnout, And Mindfulness, Denise Mcnulty

DNP Final Reports

Stress and burnout are endemic in the health care profession, and the transition to practice is associated with even more stress and anxiety for new graduate nurses (Boehm & Tse, 2013). Researchers have demonstrated that mindfulness-based interventions mitigate stress and burnout and improve the workplace environment and patient outcomes (Perla et al., 2017; van den Riet et al., 2018). This scholarly evidence-based practice project assessed the impact of integrating mindfulness training into an existing nurse residency program. The team measured burnout, stress, and mindfulness via an online survey at the beginning of the February 2020 residency cohort with repeat measures …

Data were collected using an online survey of 151 students undertaking WIL as part of a university degree, in the contexts of business, sociology and …

Diversity – Independent Factors Predict Elevated Extinction Rates, Dustin Perriguey, Corinne Myers, Jason Moore, Louis Scuderi Apr 2021

Diversity – Independent Factors Predict Elevated Extinction Rates, Dustin Perriguey, Corinne Myers, Jason Moore, Louis Scuderi

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Multiple linear regression was used to determine the relationships between diversity-independent factors (i.e., abiotic, climatic) 2, 5, and 10 Myrs-prior to the most elevated Phanerozoic extinctions. We constructed five abiotic variables from Phanerozoic proxy records1–5 to compare to extinction rates: mean temperature, temperature instability, carbon cycle instability, continental weathering rates, and habitat instability. All three models were statistically significant (P < 0.05) and explained > 70% of the variation in Alroy’s6 three-timer generic extinction rates. However, the 2 Myr-prior model explained the most variance in extinction rates and had the most predictive power, based on adjusted and predictive R2 (~ 72% and 41%, respectively). Carbon …

Modeling The Mechanistic Behavioral Logic Supporting Adherence To Hormone Therapy In Breast Cancer Patients, Gina Kersey Apr 2021

Modeling The Mechanistic Behavioral Logic Supporting Adherence To Hormone Therapy In Breast Cancer Patients, Gina Kersey

Theses

This project proposed that given a basic model of the decisional logic driving stable adherence it might be possible to reliably anticipate increased vulnerability to discontinuation and use such a mode to design behavioral interventions that are specifically tailored to deliver course corrections that are temporally and contextually optimal. A logistic regression was coded and run using the core model predicted by the experts as a base for how the variables interact to make predictions. Then a logistic regression with stepwise selection was coded and run using the core model as a base for how the variables interact and to …
