Intergenerational Environmental Justice And The Climate Crisis: Thinking With And Beyond The Charter, Dayna Scott, Garance Malivel Apr 2021

Intergenerational Environmental Justice And The Climate Crisis: Thinking With And Beyond The Charter, Dayna Scott, Garance Malivel

Articles & Book Chapters

Inspired by the analysis developed in the article “Coming of Age in a Warming World: The Charter’s Section 15 Equality Guarantee and Youth-Led Climate Litigation,” by Nathalie Chalifour, Jessica Earle, and Laura Macintyre, this commentary explores the concept of intergenerational environmental justice in the climate crisis. Our central contribution is to advance a relational conception of intergenerational environmental justice, which we argue can overcome some common objections to thinking about justice and rights in “generational” terms. This analysis supports climate litigation efforts on Charter grounds, best conceived in our view as discrimination against young and future generations. Yet it also …

Sunk Or Dunk?: An Empirical Analysis Of The Effect Of Sunk Cost Fallacy In Professional Basketball, Hailey Dicicco

Business and Economics Honors Papers

This project is divided into two sections. The first section is a comparison between the NBA and WNBA, using performance metrics from game statistics. Using performance characteristics, an empirical analysis was used to determine if the number of minutes played was determined by consistent parameters across these organizations. This finding showed inconsistency. The WNBA showed higher valuation for blocks, steals, and assists while the NBA showed higher valuation for three-point percentages and defensive rebounds.

The second section of the paper evaluates the sunk cost fallacy and its impacts in the NBA. The WNBA was not able to be included in …

Defects In Translation-Dependent Quality Control Pathways Lead To Convergent Molecular And Neurodevelopmental Pathology., Markus Terrey, Scott I Adamson, Jeffrey H Chuang, Susan L Ackerman Apr 2021

Defects In Translation-Dependent Quality Control Pathways Lead To Convergent Molecular And Neurodevelopmental Pathology., Markus Terrey, Scott I Adamson, Jeffrey H Chuang, Susan L Ackerman

Faculty Research 2021

Translation-dependent quality control pathways such as no-go decay (NGD), non-stop decay (NSD), and nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) govern protein synthesis and proteostasis by resolving non-translating ribosomes and preventing the production of potentially toxic peptides derived from faulty and aberrant mRNAs. However, how translation is altered and the in vivo defects that arise in the absence of these pathways are poorly understood.

Here, we show that the NGD/NSD factors Pelo and Hbs1l are critical in mice for cerebellar neurogenesis but expendable for survival of these neurons after development. Analysis of mutant mouse embryonic fibroblasts revealed translational pauses, alteration of signaling pathways, and …

The Political, The Personal, And The Personified: 18th Century British Political Caricature Art And The Formation Of The British Empire’S Identity, Sarah Johns Apr 2021

The Political, The Personal, And The Personified: 18th Century British Political Caricature Art And The Formation Of The British Empire’S Identity, Sarah Johns

History Honors Papers

An image is often capable of communicating a number of things to a viewer, and political caricature in the eighteenth-century British metropole is one clear example of this. Political caricature became a useful tool for the wealthy—especially white men—to engage in discussions about the power of the British Empire as it continued to expand and grow in strength in comparison to other European Empires at the time. Even so, with the coming of the American conflict, things changed. No longer could these men be sure of what a British identity entailed. A family fractured, changing gender norms, evolving concepts of …

022— Examining P27 Expression And Quiescence In Clobetasol-Exposed Umscv-4 Vulvar Cancer Cells, Nina Mustico, Vincent Scalcione, Jani E. Lewis

GREAT Day Posters

Vulvar cancer is rare, mostly afflicting women aged 60 and older [1]. The cancer is often preceded by a common vulvar rash, lichen sclerosus, that is usually treated with the ultra-potent corticosteroid, clobetasol propionate. This treatment may, in turn, be associated with vulvar carcinogenesis. Our previous findings suggest that clobetasol is causing UMSCV-4 vulvar carcinoma cells to enter a state of quiescence. Quiescence is temporary removal from the cell cycle and can be thought of as a dormant state in which cells are not actively dividing [2]. There is growing evidence suggesting that quiescence may play a role in allowing …

Single-Neutron States In 51ti Via Neutron Transfer Reaction To 50ti, Jessica Nebel-Crosson Apr 2021

Single-Neutron States In 51ti Via Neutron Transfer Reaction To 50ti, Jessica Nebel-Crosson

Physics and Astronomy Honors Papers

My project clarifies previous measurements made for the high excitation states of titanium isotopes, specifically 51Ti. We used a single-neutron transfer reaction from a deuterium source and measured the energy difference between the initial energy of the deuterium source, the transferred neutron, and the free proton. Our analysis included creating angular distribution plots of the proton momentum and the loose assignments of the single-particle state nature for each excitation state. We took these measurements via the Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph at Florida State University.

Unsupervised And Supervised Learning For Rna-Protein Interactions And Annotations, Kateland Sipe

Honors Projects

This project analyzed the base and amino acid interactions and annotations through the use of unsupervised and supervised learning techniques. For unsupervised learning, clustering found the data was not able to be distinguished into clear groups which matched the original annotations through kmeans clustering and hierarchical clustering. For supervised learning, the use of random forest, glmnet, and deep learning neural networks were successful in creating accurate predictions. However, machine learning likely will not be able to replace the original complex program, but could be used for possible simplification.

Water Under The Bridge? A Look At The Proposal For A New Chapter 16 Of The Bankruptcy Code From A Comparative Law Perspective, Tobias Wetlitzky Apr 2021

Water Under The Bridge? A Look At The Proposal For A New Chapter 16 Of The Bankruptcy Code From A Comparative Law Perspective, Tobias Wetlitzky

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, bankruptcy law will play a crucial role in addressing the consequences of the global economic shutdown. Many large corporations in the U.S. will need to undergo chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings or may attempt to reorganize their financial debt in an out-of-court workout. However, section 316(b) of the Trust Indenture Act of 1939 has long been blamed for making out-of-court restructurings practically impossible, because it requires unanimous approval from bondholders. In 2014, the National Bankruptcy Conference presented a solution for the inefficiencies in bond workouts by proposing a streamlined debt reorganization procedure for borrowed …

The Future Of Bankruptcy Appeals: Appellate Standing After Lexmark Considered, John A. Peterson Iii, Joshua A. Esses Apr 2021

The Future Of Bankruptcy Appeals: Appellate Standing After Lexmark Considered, John A. Peterson Iii, Joshua A. Esses

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

The purpose of this Article is to summarize the current state of the law regarding appellate standing in bankruptcy appeals within the various sister circuit courts of the United States, and to recommend how the law of appellate review of bankruptcy court orders should be applied. We will begin with a purely descriptive summary of the law of standing in federal courts and of standing to appeal orders of bankruptcy courts specifically. From this discussion it should be clear that courts almost universally limit appellate standing of bankruptcy court orders to parties that can demonstrate that they are a person-aggrieved—in …

Measurement Of The Neutron Decay Electron-Antineutrino Angular Correlation By The Acorn Experiment, Alexander Komives, Et Al.

Physics & Astronomy Faculty publications

The aCORN experiment measures the neutron-decay electron-antineutrino correlation (a coefficient) using a novel method based on an asymmetry in proton time-of-flight for events where the beta electron and recoil proton are detected in delayed coincidence. We report the data analysis and result from the second run at the NIST Center for Neutron Research, using the high-flux cold neutron beam on the new NG-C neutron guide end position: a=−0.10758±0.00136(stat)±0.00148(sys). This is consistent within uncertainties with the result from the first aCORN run on the NG-6 cold neutron beam. Combining the two aCORN runs, we obtain a=−0.10782±0.00124(stat)±0.00133(sys), which has an overall relative …

Cognitive Radio Spectrum Sensing And Prediction Using Deep Reinforcement Learning, Syed Qaisar Jalil, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Stephan Chalup

Preprints

In this paper, we propose to use deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for the task of cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) in a cognitive radio network. We selected a recently proposed offline DRL method called conservative Q-learning (CQL) due to its ability to learn complex data distributions efficiently. The task of CSS is performed as follows. Each secondary user (SU) performs local sensing and using CQL algorithm, determines the presence of licensed user for current and k-1 future timeslots. These results are forwarded to the fusion centre where another CQL algorithm is operating that generates a global decision for the current and …

351— Social Attention Bias In The Real World - Pilot Study, Rosa Lanausse, Vivian Stapleton, Meenu Mundackal, Hannah Renzi, Emma Piwko, Sarina Singh, Bradley Taber-Thomas

GREAT Day Posters

Attention bias is defined as the elevated processing of certain stimuli over others. Past research has discovered that attention bias is related to anxiety through behavioral experiments. Studies found that in a lab setting those who are more anxious are more vigilant towards a threat. Previous research is however limited in the study of examining how these behavioral experiments relate to a real-world context since most of the experiments that have been done occurred in a lab setting. To address this phenomenon, two Empatica E4 Wristbands were utilized in order to measure a participant’s anxiety through skin conductance, electrodermal activity, …

299— Determining Accuracy Of Xrd From Known Samples, Collin Horrocks Apr 2021

299— Determining Accuracy Of Xrd From Known Samples, Collin Horrocks

GREAT Day Posters

Powdered x-ray diffraction (XRD) is a technique that has the power to identify minerals and the proportion of the minerals in a mixture. A mineral is defined by a repeatable set of planes between atoms that form the crystal lattice. It is this repetition that allows the process of XRD to work. The process is done by taking a powdered sample and placing it into the machine and then shooting x-rays into the sample causing diffraction. From this using Bragg’s Law we can determine the d-spacing which is how an identity is determined for a sample and the intensity of …

Incidence Of Blackleg In Beef Cattle And Implications Of Regional Differences, Callie L. Henrich Apr 2021

Incidence Of Blackleg In Beef Cattle And Implications Of Regional Differences, Callie L. Henrich

Honors Thesis

Blackleg is an acute, fatal disease that has been afflicting cattle since the late 1800’s. It is caused by the anaerobic, spore-forming bacteria Clostridium chauvoei. This disease is characterized by swelling in areas like the legs, hips, chest, and back, and is caused by toxins released from C. chauvoei that turn the surrounding tissue black or red and give this disease its name. This study surveyed cattle veterinarians in South Dakota to determine the incidence of blackleg in South Dakota. The goal was to determine the incidence in South Dakota and discover any specific regions that were more susceptible to …

Effects Of Planning And Repeated Writing Interventions On Writing Fluency, Katherine Lea Moore Apr 2021

Effects Of Planning And Repeated Writing Interventions On Writing Fluency, Katherine Lea Moore

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Writing is an essential skill for academic success. Evidence shows students with writing difficulties experience lower overall academic performance (Graham & Perin, 2007). The development of fluent writing is particularly important, as it has been shown to be a strong predictor of global writing quality (Malecki & Jewell, 2003). Limited research exists on writing interventions specifically targeting writing fluency. While performance feedback procedures have been found effective for increasing writing fluency (Hier & Eckert, 2016), interventions such as story-mapping and self-regulation strategy development (SRSD), which target higher order writing skills, have also been shown to improve writing fluency abilities (Harris, …

Arthex, Inc. And The Assault On Administrative Adjudication, Brian Wohlhieter Apr 2021

Arthex, Inc. And The Assault On Administrative Adjudication, Brian Wohlhieter

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

Last month, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments for a case called Arthrex, Inc. v. United States which could have a significant impact on the world of patents but, even more profoundly, on the whole of the administrative state. The argument presented by the lower court is that Administrative Patent Judges (APJs) of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) wield too much power to not be approved by Senate confirmation. Rather than requiring appointment, the Federal Circuit decided to subordinate the APJs to political directors by stripping them of employment protections which are instituted to ensure the crucial Due …
