Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has become the preferred treatment for various thoracic aortic pathologies, including blunt thoracic aortic injury, aneurysms, and dissections. Involvement of Ishimaru Zone 2 occurs in up to 60% of TEVAR cases requiring extension across the distal aortic arch and left subclavian artery (LSA). Coverage of the LSA without revascularization increases the risk of complications such as upper extremity ischemia, stroke, and spinal cord injury. Therefore, the preservation of LSA perfusion during TEVAR is essential. Cervical debranching remains an effective alternative to preserve flow to the LSA, but it poses risks of bleeding, infection, and nerve …

Given the rising prevalence of autism among racial minority children in the United States, but persistent service use disparities, this study examines potential bias in specific items from the autism diagnostic observation schedule (ADOS), a highly regarded autism evaluation. We leveraged unidimensional item response theory graded response models and a sample of 735 children to analyze the differential item functioning (DIF) of items within ADOS Module 3. Three items showed significant signs of racial bias: A1 (overall language level), A5 (offers information), and D5 (compulsions and rituals). On these items, Black/African American and Asian children were usually more likely to …
The Comparator Argument In Trans-Healthcare Ban Cases, Craig Konnoth
The Comparator Argument In Trans-Healthcare Ban Cases, Craig Konnoth
UC Law Journal
As states have increasingly restricted gender affirming care for minors across the nation (reinforced by a recent Executive Order by President Trump), and though the Supreme Court ruled on one such state ban, a powerful argument has largely been overlooked. This argument emphasizes the fact that transgender minors are not alone in receiving gender affirming care. Cisgender minors also receive such care for precisely the same reasons as transgender minors— unwanted breast tissue development, undesired hair growth, unusual vocal development, and puberty onset. Indeed, cisgender children receive such care at higher numbers than trans children, and many of the medications …
A Case Against Mass Deportation: The Japanese American Internment Camps And Recent Treatment Of Korematsu, Isaac Bloch
A Case Against Mass Deportation: The Japanese American Internment Camps And Recent Treatment Of Korematsu, Isaac Bloch
UC Law Journal
The large-scale deportation of non-citizens has become a preeminent policy issue. Unfortunately, executive curtailment of immigrant communities’ liberty is not without historical parallels. During World War II, federal officials sent individuals of Japanese descent to internment camps through a series of executive orders and military proclamations. Although attorneys in the Department of Justice believed aspects of these actions were unconstitutional at the time, the administration prevailed at the nation’s highest court. Can recognition of this past wrong aid challenges to contemporary immigration enforcement regimes? How do our courts formally account for the most egregious jurisprudential errors of the past, and …

Aging leads to a progressive decline in overall bladder function resulting in lower urinary tract symptoms and increased susceptibility to infections. However, tissue-specific mechanisms of aging, specifically the contributions of the urothelium, remain elusive. Here, we introduce mouse bladder epithelium-derived organoids (mBEDOs) as a scalable platform to model urothelial aging. mBEDOs from aged mice recapitulate key features of age-associated cellular reprogramming, including oxidative stress, senescence, and DNA damage. We demonstrate the utility of mBEDOs for modeling Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) infection, generating assembloids between mBEDOs and macrophages to model epithelial-immune interactions, and genetic perturbation. Using the mBEDO platform, we also …

Objective: To determine the longitudinal effects on α-cell function of four classes of glucose-lowering agents added to metformin in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Research design and methods: In a multicenter, randomized study, 5,047 participants ≥30 years of age with type 2 diabetes taking 1,000-2,000 mg metformin daily, HbA1c 6.8%-8.5%, were randomized to receive insulin glargine U100, glimepiride, liraglutide, or sitagliptin. In a subset of 724 participants, baseline and longitudinal measures of α-cell function were assessed as the fasting glucagon concentration and change in glucagon from fasting to 30 min following oral glucose (glucagon index [GGI]). Whether these measures and …

ssDNA viruses are important components of diverse ecosystems; however, it remains challenging to systematically identify and classify them. This is partly due to their broad host range and resulting genomic diversity, structure and rapid evolutionary rates. In addition, distinguishing genuine ssDNA genomes from contaminating sequences in metagenomic datasets (e.g. from commercial kits) has been an unresolved issue for years. Here, we present CRESSENT (CRESS-DNA Extended aNnotation Toolkit), a comprehensive and modular bioinformatic pipeline focused on ssDNA virus 'genome-to-analysis' and annotation. The pipeline integrates multiple functionalities organized into several modules: sequence dereplication, decontamination, phylogenetic analysis, …

METHODS AND MATERIALS: Ten patients (five thoracic and five extremity), previously treated with spatially fractionated radiotherapy (SFRT), were selected for this in silico trial. A two-phase regimen was simulated: Phase 1 delivered 12 Gy SBRT to a uniform, predefined high-dose lattice and 4 Gy to the gross tumor volume (GTV); Phase 2 consisted of 4 additional fractions of 4 Gy to the GTV. The planning workflow was performed entirely in silico, without the need for CT simulation. …

Accelerated Diffusion Basis Spectrum Imaging With Tensor Computations, Kainen L Utt, Jacob S Blum, Donsub Rim, Sheng-Kwei Song
2020-Current year OA Pubs
This paper introduces an advanced framework for accelerated processing of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) data that utilizes an entire-image modeling approach to optimize the estimation of diffusion parameters from DWIs by mapping input diffusion data to predicted signals and estimating parameter values via a stochastic gradient descent optimizer (Adam). To validate this approach, we applied this framework to diffusion basis spectrum imaging (DBSI) and analyzed in vivo human brain and ex vivo mouse brain DWIs. Results demonstrate significant improvements to computational speed and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in estimated parameter maps compared to standard DBSI. Our approach is applicable to any diffusion …

BACKGROUND: Computational phenotyping from electronic health records (EHRs) is essential for clinical research, decision support, and quality/population health assessment, but the proliferation of algorithms for the same conditions makes it difficult to identify which algorithm is most appropriate for reuse.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a framework for assessing phenotyping algorithm fitness for purpose and reuse.
FITNESS FOR PURPOSE: Phenotyping algorithms are fit for purpose when they identify the intended population with performance characteristics appropriate for the intended application.
FITNESS FOR REUSE: Phenotyping algorithms are fit for reuse when the algorithm is implementable and generalizable-that is, it identifies the same intended population …

BACKGROUND: The discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) is a common congenital abnormality of the meniscus. Tears are common, and initial treatment is often not definitive, leading to a spectrum of complications, including persistent symptoms, meniscal insufficiency, osteochondral defects, and recurrent tears potentially requiring reoperation.
PURPOSE: To determine demographic, injury, and perioperative risk factors that increase the likelihood of complications and reoperation after treatment in patients with DLM.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: Patients surgically treated for DLM from 9 institutions between 2000 and 2020 were reviewed. Data on demographics, presenting symptoms and signs, surgical findings and treatments, …
Nightmare In The Library, Charles A. Coppin
Nightmare In The Library, Charles A. Coppin
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Students of real analysis and calculus find that the completeness property of the real numbers is difficult to understand, especially, its importance. The word numbers denote real numbers throughout this piece. After all, the real numbers are not any less imaginary than the so-called imaginary numbers. Although, sometimes, it does gain some mention in calculus courses, its presence as a topic is a mere will-o’-the-wisp of bygone days when teachers would often reach deep into the big ideas of calculus as a mainstay of their courses. For the sake of cultural literacy and the development of mathematical maturity, we believe …
The Tool/Weapon Duality Of Mathematics, Alexandre Borovik
The Tool/Weapon Duality Of Mathematics, Alexandre Borovik
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This paper outlines the principal moral and ethical issues of mathematics and existential choices a mathematician may face in his professional life. My text is a manifesto; it is a list of declarations rather than a systematic development of the theme. Indeed each section could be expanded into a paper on its own. I hope to write fairly soon a more detailed exposition.
Let's Play Uno! Training Mathematical Thinking With An Inclusive Card Game, Thierry Meyrath, Clara-Ioana Mincu, Antonella Perucca
Let's Play Uno! Training Mathematical Thinking With An Inclusive Card Game, Thierry Meyrath, Clara-Ioana Mincu, Antonella Perucca
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
We explore probability exercises based on the game UNO. Excluding the Wild cards, the deck contains precisely 100 cards, which makes it convenient to express probabilities as percentages. We discuss the mathematical relation between cards that can be played after other cards. We also propose an algebraic exercise that relates several quantities, such as the number of cards left in the losing player’s hand. Finally, we argue that UNO is a very inclusive game: it is logistically easy to play, allows for players of different skill levels, and can be adapted to meet special needs. Beyond being playful exercises, our …
How (And Why) To Start A Math Circle At The County Jail, Aram Bingham
How (And Why) To Start A Math Circle At The County Jail, Aram Bingham
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Math circles are a common form of outreach usually run by professional mathematicians as enrichment for K-12 students or teachers. As a setting to stimulate interest and develop positive socialization around mathematical practice, a regular math circle can also be an effective bridge to higher education in carceral settings for both facilitators and participants. This article describes my journey through starting and running math circles in county jails, with a view towards the expansion of mathematics education as another tool for the dismantling of mass incarceration.
A Note On Modeling Prejudice, Alan Lockard, Edwin Harcourt
A Note On Modeling Prejudice, Alan Lockard, Edwin Harcourt
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
We model prejudice in the context of an iterated prisoner’s dilemma tournament. Prejudice here is defined as the inability to distinguish amongst members of an identifiable group. We run a computer simulation where agents of one of two groups with defined strategies are randomly matched against each other. The agents either cooperate with or defect against the agent they are matched with. Our focus is on agents who play an unprejudiced version of the Tit-for-Tat strategy (cooperate with any player in the first encounter, and then apply the same strategy [defect or cooperate] that the opposing player played against them …
Gold And Silver In Balance: Khayyam’S Mathematical Analysis Of Binary Alloys, Yousef Yassi, Reza Yassi
Gold And Silver In Balance: Khayyam’S Mathematical Analysis Of Binary Alloys, Yousef Yassi, Reza Yassi
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
The history of titration dates back to Archimedes who established that an object submerged in a liquid displaces an amount of liquid whose weight is equal to the buoyant force acting on the object. Since then, many scientists and engineers have tried to optimize his approach or devise new instruments for titration purposes. Omar Khayyam (1048–1123), in addition to designing a hydro-static balance, developed mathematical approaches for titration of binary alloys, that is, alloys made up of only two elements. Here we explore the different versions of Khayyam’s work on titration given by various sources. We also compare the accuracy …
A Just Balance And The Teaching And Learning Of Mathematics, Marshall Gordon
A Just Balance And The Teaching And Learning Of Mathematics, Marshall Gordon
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Society’s response to the question of what is worth sharing and how it best can be provided as conceived by the educational establishment shapes the education of every individual in school. As the classroom experience is a commitment to the future of society, it is good and just for society to support the educational development of each person in order that all can participate productively. In this way a “just balance” is established. In the particular case of educating students in mathematics, however, there is apparently an unjust balance, for despite the considerable time and effort students and teachers in …
Translating Trattato Dell'alcibra Amuchabile, Olympia Nicodemi
Translating Trattato Dell'alcibra Amuchabile, Olympia Nicodemi
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
We present a detailed look at one small section of a premodern algebra manuscript from circa 1365 C.E. The manuscript, Tratatto dell’Alcibra Amuchabile (Anonimo), is written in the Tuscan vernacular, with no symbols, no punctuation, and wildly inconsistent (pre-printing press) spellings. We present some of the hurdles to translating this “rhetorical algebra” followed by an annotated translation of one of its algebra rules, Rule 5, through which we learn the methods and mindset of algebra that preceded and seeded the breakthroughs in algebra of the 16th century. We also point to some of the significant differences between algebra then …
Mathematics And Ethics: Narratives And Conversations, David Pritchard
Mathematics And Ethics: Narratives And Conversations, David Pritchard
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
We provide an eclectic overview of various narratives that mathematicians use to describe mathematics. We discuss some of the ethical issues and approaches that each narrative tends to emphasise, and how these can lead to productive conversation in the absence of a universally agreed philosophical or ethical framework. We also discuss the dangers of a deficit model of ethical engagement, and other threats to conversation.
Emergent Collective Argumentation Types In A Socio-Critical Mathematical Modeling Activity, Ayse Ozturk, Ozgul Kartal
Emergent Collective Argumentation Types In A Socio-Critical Mathematical Modeling Activity, Ayse Ozturk, Ozgul Kartal
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Socio-critical mathematical modeling encourages students to employ mathematics as a tool for social inquiry and action, promoting critical thinking and social awareness. While research on collective argumentation in mathematical modeling exists, its connection to socio-critical modeling remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining the types of collective argumentation that emerge during small-group and whole-group discussions as students navigate different phases of the modeling process. Using an adapted version of Toulmin’s argumentation model and a framework for socio-critical modeling phases, this study analyzes classroom discussions in which high school students engage in a modeling task focused on fair raise …
