Objective: To evaluate the three-dimensional (3D) angular displacement (Roll, Yaw, and Pitch) of the upper cervical vertebrae (C1, C2, and C3) in patients with severe mandibular deviation (MD) due to condylar hyperplasia (CH), utilizing a computed tomography (CT)-based segmentation approach. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 50 patients with MD ≥ 6 mm caused by hemimandibular elongation (HE) or a hybrid form (HF) of CH. The skull, mandible, and cervical vertebrae (C1–C3) were segmented using 3D Slicer software. Angular deviations (Pitch, Yaw, Roll) were measured relative to the Frankfurt plane. Patients were categorized by the side of CH (right or …

Light reprocessed by dust grains emitting in the infrared enables the study of the physics at play in dusty embedded regions, where ultraviolet and optical wavelengths are attenuated. Infrared telescopes such as JWST have made it possible to study the earliest feedback phases, when stars are shielded by cocoons of gas and dust. Comprehending this phase is crucial for unravelling the effects of feedback from young stars that leads to their emergence and the dispersal of their host molecular clouds. Here we show that the transition from the embedded to the exposed phase of star formation is short (< 4 Myr) and sometimes almost absent (< 1 Myr) across a sample of 37 nearby star-forming galaxies covering a wide range of morphologies, from massive barred spirals to irregular dwarfs. The short duration of the dust-clearing timescales suggests a predominant role of pre-supernova feedback mechanisms in revealing newborn stars, confirming previous results on smaller samples and allowing, for the first time, a statistical analysis of their dependencies. We find that the timescales associated with mid-infrared emission at 21 μm, tracing a dust-embedded feedback phase, are controlled by a complex interplay between giant molecular cloud properties (masses and velocity dispersions) and galaxy morphology. We report relatively longer durations of the embedded phase of star formation in barred spiral galaxies, while this phase is significantly reduced in low-mass irregular dwarf galaxies. We discuss tentative trends with gas-phase metallicity, which may favor faster cloud dispersal at low metallicities.

We discuss the holographic correspondence between 3d “Chern-Simons gravity” and an ensemble of 2d Narain code CFTs. Starting from 3d abelian Chern-Simons theory, we construct an ensemble of boundary CFTs defined by gauging all possible maximal subgroups of the bulk one-form symmetry. Each maximal non-anomalous subgroup is isomorphic to a classical even self-dual error-correcting code over ℤp × ℤp, providing a way to define a boundary “code CFT.” The average over the ensemble of such theories is holographically dual to Chern-Simons gravity, a bulk theory summed over 3d topologies sharing the same boundary. In the case of …

The resistance of capitalist inequality to legal reform has led a growing number of scholars to reconsider the explanatory virtues of Marxist legal thought. But what are those virtues? Some scholars hold that what makes Marxist legal thought special is its ability to explain the development of legal relationships in terms of the development of extra-legal relationships — specifically, the relations of production as they adapt to changes in the productive forces. Other scholars argue that this focus on the causal process by which extra-legal change (or stasis) drives legal change (or stasis) is too reductive. They contend that Marxist …

The Change Healthcare cyberattack of 2024 paralyzed the health care system for months, creating an exceedingly far reaching and devastating impact on providers, suppliers, and patients across the country. While the scope of the attack was unprecedented, the cyberattack itself was not new, unique, or isolated. Indeed, this attack came just months after the close of a year in which the United States’ Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights (OCR) recorded the highest number of reported breaches of protected health information and the highest number of breached records. With a medical record fetching nearly four times …

Two motives drive much of American health care. The first is the motive to heal the sick—the patient motive. The second is the motive to generate financial gains—the profit motive. This Article asks the following question: where do these two motives intersect and diverge? Using three emerging technologies as examples, this Article provides a framework for answering this question. It then uses this framework’s insights to explain when and how legal and extra-legal institutions can be used to improve care, either by constraining the profit motive or aligning it more closely with the goals of patient care. This Article concludes …

The Privacy Law Jigsaw: Piecing Together Legal Compliance When Pieces Don’T Fit, Roy Wyman, Wesley Mcculloch
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Over the past six years the United States has shifted from a relatively stable and laissez-faire privacy regime, anchored by a few, sector-specific federal statutes such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, to an increasingly fragmented landscape dominated by numerous state-level consumer privacy laws. While these laws share commonalities, they also vary in important ways. This Article analyzes that patchwork legal regime and its impact on businesses through four points of friction: (i) statutory applicability and thresholds; (ii) notice-and-choice requirements; (iii) individual data-management rights; and (iv) controller–processor contracting obligations. This Article further explores how modern service-delivery models, especially …

“Take A Seat”: Overcoming The Enforceability Challenges Of Crowdsourced Blockchain Arbitration, Anna-Sophie Hochgürtel
Journal of Dispute Resolution
This essay addresses the recent phenomenon of Crowdsourced Blockchain Arbitration (CBA). Within the landscape of new digital dispute resolution tools, I argue that CBA stands out as a cost-effective adjudicative dispute resolution forum for online consumer disputes. I then provide an overview of existing CBA platforms and address the question to what extent CBA constitutes a form of arbitration. Only if it does can CBA arbitration agreements and arbitration awards be enforced domestically and internationally under the New York Convention of 1958. I demonstrate that while CBA proceedings correspond to a conceptual understanding of arbitration, they fall outside the international …

Sorex araneus, the Eurasian common shrew, has seasonal brain size plasticity (Dehnel's phenomenon) and many intraspecific chromosomal rearrangements. Genomic contributions to these traits, however, remain unknown. We couple a chromosome-scale genome assembly with seasonal brain transcriptomes to discover relationships between molecular evolution and both traits. While Positively Selected Genes (PSGs) enriched the Fanconi anemia DNA repair pathway (FANCI, FAAP100), which is likely involved in chromosomal rearrangements by preventing the accumulation of chromosomal aberrations, genes under positive selection or showing seasonal differential expression in the brain implicate neurogenesis (PCDHA6, SOX9, Notch signaling) and metabolic regulation (VEGFA, SPHK2) as key mechanisms underlying …
Quality Improvement Project: Improving Transitional Care Management (Tcm) Follow-Up Through Medical Assistant Education, Oben Assick
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The underutilization of Transitional Care Management (TCM) services in primary care significantly contributes to preventable hospital readmissions and revenue loss. Despite established Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines, execution often fails due to knowledge gaps among frontline staff. This quality improvement project addressed low TCM task completion rates by implementing a structured educational intervention for medical assistants (MAs). The purpose was to evaluate whether targeted training improves timely patient follow-up, visit scheduling, and billing accuracy. The project utilized Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model to guide organizational change and the Health Belief Model to address behavioral barriers. A quantitative, quasi-experimental …

Vici syndrome (VS) is a rare pediatric genetic disorder characterized by profound developmental delay, seizures, immune deficits, cardiomyopathy and progressive motor dysfunction. This devastating condition is caused by pathogenic variants in the EPG5 gene, which encodes a regulator of autophagy, leading to the accumulation of toxic intracellular material and widespread cellular dysfunction. Less-severe EPG5 pathogenic variants have recently been linked to rare familial forms of Parkinson's disease, suggesting deficits in EPG5 function drive a range of neurodegenerative disorders. Currently, there are no effective treatments for any disorders associated with pathogenic variants of EPG5. The underlying cellular mechanisms driving the progressive …

Quantum Chebyshev Transform-Based Graph Neural Networks For Financial Fraud Detection, Minrui Xu, Bingyan Guan, Bethel Hui Ting Loke, Paul R. Griffin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Financial fraud detection is a critical challenge requiring accurate identification of anomalous patterns in complex transaction networks. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have emerged as powerful tools for fraud detection by capturing relational structures among entities. Meanwhile, quantum computing offers new possibilities to enhance machine learning through high-dimensional Hilbert spaces and parallelism. In this paper, we propose a hybrid classical-quantum model called QCTGNN (Quantum Chebyshev Transform-based Graph Neural Network) for financial fraud detection. The QCTGNN integrates a classical graph neural network component based on Simplified Graph Convolutions (SGConv) with a quantum component that performs a Chebyshev polynomial-based transform via variational quantum …

Misjudging A Reasonable Jury: Evidence That Courts Dismiss Meritorious Harassment Claims, Elizabeth C. Tippett, Jamillah Bowman Williams
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Courts assessing summary judgment motions in Title VII harassment claims commonly grant the motion on the basis that the alleged harassment is insufficiently “severe or pervasive” to meet the legal standard. This mixed-methods study empirically tests whether there is a gap between how judges and potential jurors assess the same set of facts on the severe or pervasive element of a Title VII harassment claim. We presented study participants with facts from 80 federal harassment cases. In each case, the defendant employer moved to dismiss the case, arguing that no reasonable jury would find the alleged harassment sufficiently severe or …

Mutual Fund Fees, Stewart L. Brown
Mutual Fund Fees, Stewart L. Brown
William & Mary Business Law Review
Investors pay billions annually in fees for actively managed mutual funds, despite the availability of far superior, cost-effective alternatives like index funds. Mutual funds, with their unique legal structure, insulate management fees from competitive pressures, thereby enabling fund sponsors to maintain high fees. Contrary to the assumption that legal, regulatory, and governance mechanisms adequately protect investors, this Article demonstrates that such safeguards are largely ineffective. The competitive forces that would ordinarily drive fee reductions are rendered impotent by structural conflicts of interest, ineffective regulatory oversight, and the passive role of independent directors. Fund sponsors capitalize on economies of scale, reaping …

Throughout the 2000s the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) has been the subject of many high-profile antitrust lawsuits regarding the financial restrictions imposed on student athletes. The aftermath of some of the most recent decisions has given athletes new ways to earn compensation while competing in college athletics. In House v. NCAA, another historic antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA, the Court for the Northern District of California was tasked with deciding whether student athletes can be paid directly for their athletic performance. By comparing these NCAA antitrust lawsuits with other blockbuster antitrust cases such as the Microsoft antitrust case, …
