Replanting Hawthorns: Towards A Diachronic Translation Of À La Recherche Du Temps Perdu, Gerardo Bandera
Replanting Hawthorns: Towards A Diachronic Translation Of À La Recherche Du Temps Perdu, Gerardo Bandera
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A novel as long and complex as Marcel Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu poses a challenge of methodology to its translators: how should one proceed with rendering its unique style, its bifurcating sentences, its aesthetic philosophy, and the interplay between content and form? What should one prioritize? This dissertation proposes a method of translation that gives priority not only to sentence structure, as most English translators of the novel have done, but also to the repetition and diachronic development of images, themes, and phrases in order to capture and recreate certain recursive effects of the novel’s form. It …
Development Of The Active Participle Denoting Ongoing Aspect In Heritage Speakers Of Levantine Arabic In The Us, Reem Kanjawi-Faraj
Development Of The Active Participle Denoting Ongoing Aspect In Heritage Speakers Of Levantine Arabic In The Us, Reem Kanjawi-Faraj
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study investigated the acquisition, development, and productivity of اسم الفاعل “ism il-fA؟el”, Active Participle (AP) when denoting ongoing aspect in the comprehension and production of heritage speakers (HSs) of Levantine Arabic (LA[1]). Ongoing aspect is mainly realized in Arabic by an inflected imperfective verb preceded by a progressive particle (PROG.V) and in certain cases b AP. Our study is comprised of four sub-studies: a Syrian Levantine Arabic (SLA) adult corpus analysis (production of PROG.V and AP/ CACeC template); a cross-sectional LA child heritage comprehension and production experiment (PROG.V and AP/ CACeC template) ; a longitudinal study of …
Reimagining Safety And Justice: Experiences Of And Resistance To Police Sexual Violence In New York City, Priscilla Bustamante
Reimagining Safety And Justice: Experiences Of And Resistance To Police Sexual Violence In New York City, Priscilla Bustamante
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In the era following both Black Lives Matter and #MeToo, police sexual violence (PSV) currently constitutes the second most commonly reported police complaint after excessive force. Police across the U.S. are caught for some form of sexual misconduct once every five days, with on-duty officers found to commit sexual assaults at more than double the rate of the general population. The gendered and racialized perpetration of sexual violence extends far beyond policing; however, it has been intensified within the masculine, militarized carceral structures designed to legally control and punish.
Accordingly, this dissertation utilizes an interdisciplinary, multi-method approach to offer what …
Online Visual Query System For Real-Time Large-Scale Spatio-Temporal Data Explorations With Error Bounds, Xueqi Huang
Online Visual Query System For Real-Time Large-Scale Spatio-Temporal Data Explorations With Error Bounds, Xueqi Huang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Modern datasets continue to grow in size, dimensionality, and heterogeneity, creating increasing tension between the need for responsive, interactive analysis and the computational cost of accessing, aggregating, and visualizing large volumes of data. Traditional database engines and visualization tools often assume that full data retrieval is feasible or that exact computation is necessary for meaningful insight. In practice, however, analysts frequently benefit from timely, uncertainty-aware approximations than from delayed and exact results. This thesis investigates how data summarization techniques, specifically mergeable sketches can be combined with progressive, out-of-core visualization methods to support interactive exploration of datasets that exceed main memory. …
Protein Allostery Probed By Ligands Across Sites, Virgil A. Woods
Protein Allostery Probed By Ligands Across Sites, Virgil A. Woods
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Allostery is a pervasive regulatory principle throughout biology, yet the structural pathways by which distal inputs alter active‑site chemistry within protein structures remain incompletely defined and exploited. This dissertation uses protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) as a tractable model to map those pathways with complementary experimental and computational tools. I integrate high‑resolution hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS), room-temperature crystallography, NMR, steady-state kinetics, crystallographic pseudo-ensembles, and machine-learning-guided ligand discovery. The working premise is that regulation reflects redistribution within a conformational ensemble rather than a binary switch. That orthogonal perturbations by small molecules, mutations, and protein partners can be used to both …
Precarious Status, Essential Work: Migrant Labor, Social Reproduction, And The Politics Of Regularization In Covid Quebec, Jessie Lauren Stein
Precarious Status, Essential Work: Migrant Labor, Social Reproduction, And The Politics Of Regularization In Covid Quebec, Jessie Lauren Stein
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines how migrant justice struggles in Quebec during and immediately after the COVID‑19 pandemic challenged and reshaped the cultural politics of membership in a neoliberal welfare state under strain. The research is centered on an ethnography of the Status for All campaign, a coalition effort spearheaded in Montreal to secure permanent immigration status for all people with precarious status in Canada. I situate pandemic‑era regularization efforts within overlapping crises of border governance, social reproduction, and federal–provincial relations. I argue that Quebec’s growing reliance on migrants with precarious status to sustain essential public social reproductive functions in care work, …
Calculated Risks: The Power Of Predictive Risk Models To Regulate Families Of Color, Ashleigh Washington
Calculated Risks: The Power Of Predictive Risk Models To Regulate Families Of Color, Ashleigh Washington
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines predictive risk modelling (PRM) in New York City Administration for Children's Services (ACS), specifically exploring AI-enabled design features, practices, and encoded and racialized assumptions about risk in child welfare prevention services. Guided by Critical Race Theory and the Algorithmic Ecology framework, this study traces how PRM in ACS evolved from a service termination tool into a broader, largely internal surveillance apparatus that leverages families’ personal information, including health information, to assess risk of future maltreatment and to evaluate contracted service providers. Drawing on analysis of public records and in-depth interviews with Black parents, the findings describe how …
How To Search For The Engram: Optogenetics And Network Dynamics, Claudia Garcia Jou
How To Search For The Engram: Optogenetics And Network Dynamics, Claudia Garcia Jou
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Memories are thought to be encoded by ensembles of neurons called "engram cells", because their artificial activation with optogenetics leads to the behavioral expression of a memory. However, the physiological mechanisms that mediate this process remain unknown. In this thesis, I investigate how optogenetic stimulation of memory-tagged cells changes neuronal firing, spatial coding, and the geometry of neural manifolds. I used an active place avoidance task and a foraging task to label engram cells in the dorsal hippocampus with Channelrhodopsin2 (ChR2). I then recorded the hippocampal activity response to optogenetic stimulation in mice under anesthesia, head-fixed, or freely moving. I …

Background: Current clinical practice guidelines support the long-term use of pharmacotherapy for obesity treatment. Historically, phentermine has been one of the most prescribed obesity medications (OMs), however, its long-term efficacy and safety have never been evaluated in a randomized trial as its market approval predates such requirements. Here we describe the design, rationale, and baseline characteristics for a 24-month, double-blind, randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy, cardiovascular risk, and safety of phentermine in adults with overweight or obesity.
Methods: This multicenter trial will compare outcomes among participants randomized to phentermine 24 mg daily versus placebo for 24 months. All participants …
Exploring The Value Of International Research Experience For Leadership Development, Lisa Luken
Exploring The Value Of International Research Experience For Leadership Development, Lisa Luken
Leadership Studies
The world has become more complex and interconnected, with challenges that span countries and disciplines. To navigate these challenges, individuals are needed who are equipped with skills and competencies to lead in cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary environments. These leadership skills and competencies can be developed through participation in experiential learning programs. However, the impact of international research-based programs remains unexplored. This is a qualitative, phenomenological study within a bounded case that explored the lived experiences of students who participated in an international graduate student research program from a leadership development perspective. Mezirow’s (1978a) transformative learning theory was utilized as a theoretical framework …
Marx And Engels On Prisons And Capitalism, James Parisot
Marx And Engels On Prisons And Capitalism, James Parisot
Sociology Faculty Publications
This paper rethinks Marx and Engels’ comments on imprisonment and capitalism. While there has been a tendency to suggest the authors’ comments on crime and punishment were peripheral and secondary to their major projects, such as Marx’s Capital, this paper claims, in fact, their writings on incarceration were guided by their shared theoretical project which included historicizing systems of punishment as correlating with modes of production. Also, while more has been written on their ideas of criminality, instead, this paper excavates their thoughts on prisons, which have often been neglected. Overall, it shows there has been a tendency to …

Background: Acute cellularrejection (ACR) remains a major cause of morbidity afterhearttransplantation despite advances in immunosuppression. Whole genometranscriptomicprofiling offers a systems-based, unbiased approach to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying ACR. However, noninvasive, longitudinal biomarker assessments capable of capturing the temporal dynamics ofrejection biology remain scarce.
Methods: RNA sequencing ofperipheralblood fromheart transplant recipients before, during, and after ACR was compared with nonrejection controls. Pathway analysis was conducted using differentially expressed genes (DEGs), and a machine learning approach was applied to assessgene-based prediction of ACR.
Results: A total of 235 rejection-specific significant DEGs and 863 postrejection DEGs (false discovery rate < 0.05) were identified. During ACR, DEGs were enriched for T-cell activation/differentiation, apoptosis, and B-cell receptor signaling pathways. By combining the 2 sets of DEGs, a panel of 71 common genes was identified that reflected the significant, longitudinal transcriptomic dynamics of ACR. In an elastic net machine learning-based classifier, DYNLL1 and SERF2 were …

Study On Anomaly Data Detection Of Voltage In Transformer District Of Distribution Network Based On Tfec-Inne, Junsheng Zou, Xiu Yang, Gaiping Sun, Fan Yang, Jun Liu, Bingbing Lu
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
A large amount of anomaly data of voltage can be generated during the transformer district operation of distribution network. These anomaly data cannot correctly reflect the operating conditions of the distribution network and can seriously affect the analysis of the voltage characteristics of the transformer district. Therefore, anomaly detection of the voltage operation data in the transformer district is of great significance. Due to the problem of low accuracy of traditional anomaly detection methods, an algorithm, combining trimmed window feature extraction clustering (TFEC) and isolation-based anomaly detection using nearest-neighbor ensembles (INNE), is proposed. The daily features of the initial data …

The Exactions Illusion: Sheetz’S Missing Dissent, Lee Anne Fennell, Timothy M. Mulvaney
The Exactions Illusion: Sheetz’S Missing Dissent, Lee Anne Fennell, Timothy M. Mulvaney
Faculty Scholarship
In April 2024, the Supreme Court unanimously handed down Sheetz v. County of El Dorado, a land use exactions case billed as narrow, inevitable, constitutionally compelled, and obviously correct. It was none of those things. Sheetz instead ushered in an open-ended shift of policy control over the built environment from state and local legislatures to courts. By its terms, the holding extended the Court’s stringent “exactions” test—which requires the government to prove nexus and proportionality between development conditions and development impacts—beyond its original context of parcel-specific administrative bargains to reach an unspecified set of legislated property conditions. Yet the decision’s …

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent sleep disorder linked to considerable public health burdens and comorbidities. However, its heterogeneous presentation and the limited accessibility of traditional diagnostic tools such as polysomnography (PSG) lead to widespread underdiagnosis. As a result, artificial intelligence (AI) approaches, including machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models, have attracted attention as an alternative pathway to detection. This paper first provides a comprehensive review of AI-driven OSA diagnosis, covering different diagnosis problems, input-data types, data biases, pre-processing techniques, and model performance. We then leverage the largest clinical dataset used in OSA prediction to date, …

Light reprocessed by dust grains emitting in the infrared enables the study of the physics at play in dusty embedded regions, where ultraviolet and optical wavelengths are attenuated. Infrared telescopes such as JWST have made it possible to study the earliest feedback phases, when stars are shielded by cocoons of gas and dust. Comprehending this phase is crucial for unravelling the effects of feedback from young stars that leads to their emergence and the dispersal of their host molecular clouds. Here we show that the transition from the embedded to the exposed phase of star formation is short (< 4 Myr) and sometimes almost absent (< 1 Myr) across a sample of 37 nearby star-forming galaxies covering a wide range of morphologies, from massive barred spirals to irregular dwarfs. The short duration of the dust-clearing timescales suggests a predominant role of pre-supernova feedback mechanisms in revealing newborn stars, confirming previous results on smaller samples and allowing, for the first time, a statistical analysis of their dependencies. We find that the timescales associated with mid-infrared emission at 21 μm, tracing a dust-embedded feedback phase, are controlled by a complex interplay between giant molecular cloud properties (masses and velocity dispersions) and galaxy morphology. We report relatively longer durations of the embedded phase of star formation in barred spiral galaxies, while this phase is significantly reduced in low-mass irregular dwarf galaxies. We discuss tentative trends with gas-phase metallicity, which may favor faster cloud dispersal at low metallicities.
