Severe Diabetic Gastroparesis Masquerading As Emphysematous Gastritis And Surgical Abdomen, Mark Gamadia, Bianca Gamadia, Charles K. Sonaliya

Student Publications

A 66-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus and known gastroparesis presented to the emergency department with fatigue, confusion, and hypoglycemia. During hospitalization, he developed worsening abdominal pain and distention. CT revealed marked gastric distention, extensive portal venous gas, and mesenteric air, raising concern for emphysematous gastritis, gastric outlet obstruction, or volvulus. Despite these alarming radiographic findings, the patient remained hemodynamically stable, with no peritoneal signs. Surgical consultation was obtained; however, given his clinical stability and history of gastroparesis, conservative management was pursued. Treatment included nasogastric decompression, IV fluids, and prokinetic therapy with metoclopramide and erythromycin. Within 48 hours, the …

Albumin-Binding Domains In Therapeutic Protein Engineering: A Structural And Computational Perspective On Rational Design, Matthew Argyle, Dallin M. Chipman, Anna Claire Woolley, Bradley C. Bundy, Dennis Della Corte

Faculty Publications

Therapeutic proteins face a critical pharmacokinetic challenge: rapid clearance from circulation limits their clinical efficacy. Albumin-binding domains (ABDs) offer an elegant solution by enabling therapeutic proteins to “hitchhike” on serum albumin’s favorable 19-day half-life through FcRn-mediated recycling. Clinical validation through approved therapeutics like ozoralizumab demonstrates the success of this approach, with preclinical studies showing fusion to an ABD extended half-life to 18 days. This review provides an analysis of ABD-fusion protein design, integrating structural biology, computational prediction, and rational engineering principles. We catalog the major classes of albumin-binding modalities, including bacterial three-helix bundle domains, engineered peptides, antibody-derived binders, and alternative …

Stocks And Shocks: Assessing The Relative Roles Of Public And Private Inventories In Buffering Rice Price Volatility In The Philippines, Bernhard Dalheimer, Kenneth Foster, Gerald E. Shively, Valerien O. Pede, Dela-Dem Doe Fiankor, Jacob Ricker-Gilbert, Pratibha Bist Feb 2026

Stocks And Shocks: Assessing The Relative Roles Of Public And Private Inventories In Buffering Rice Price Volatility In The Philippines, Bernhard Dalheimer, Kenneth Foster, Gerald E. Shively, Valerien O. Pede, Dela-Dem Doe Fiankor, Jacob Ricker-Gilbert, Pratibha Bist

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Public stockholding of food is politically contentious and economically challenging. Although private stocks are generally understood to be more efficient than public stocks at providing a reliable buffer against production shortfalls, private stocks often fail to stabilize prices during extreme food market shocks. Moreover, maintaining large public stock programs in which the government acts as the buyer or seller of last resort, can be very costly. This paper analyzes the recent historical success of public and private rice stocks in stabilizing domestic rice prices in the Philippines, the world’s largest net importer of rice. Relying on competitive storage theory and …

Music And Dance, Erica Buurman Feb 2026

Music And Dance, Erica Buurman

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Vienna’s reputation as the ballroom dancing capital of Europe was already secured by the end of the eighteenth century and continues to this day. This chapter examines the rich history of dance in Vienna from the eighteenth century – the period of the first public ballrooms as well as the emergence of ballet as an independent art form – to the present day. It discusses Viennese ball culture and its iconic dance, the waltz, which is the part of Vienna’s history that has been most influential on wider dance culture, and originated the most recognizably and distinctively ‘Viennese’ musical style.

A Pilot Study Evaluating Child Resistant Closures In Pharmaceuticals In The Developing Nation Of Ghana: Informing Global Paediatric Safety And Usability Standards, Samuel Ofosu, Kojo Agyapong Afrifah, Laura Bix Feb 2026

A Pilot Study Evaluating Child Resistant Closures In Pharmaceuticals In The Developing Nation Of Ghana: Informing Global Paediatric Safety And Usability Standards, Samuel Ofosu, Kojo Agyapong Afrifah, Laura Bix

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Despite their proven effectiveness in preventing unintentional paediatric medication poisoning in high-income countries, the performance and usability of Child Resistant Closures (CRCs) remain underexplored in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).

To provide pilot data regarding the potential efficacy of using CRCs in LMICs, we conducted a study of the approach in a low-resourced region (Ghana, West Africa) by adapting testing protocols utilized in the United States (16 CFR Part 1700.20). The study utilized a convenience sample of children (n=50; 42-51 months) and adults (n=50; 50-70 years) to develop preliminary data related to the efficacy of a single design of CRC …

Comprehensive Framework For Artificial Intelligence Model Testing: Integrated Validation Methodologies, Global Regulatory Compliance, And Enterprise Implementation Strategies For 25 Years, Ramkumar Bharathan Feb 2026

Comprehensive Framework For Artificial Intelligence Model Testing: Integrated Validation Methodologies, Global Regulatory Compliance, And Enterprise Implementation Strategies For 25 Years, Ramkumar Bharathan

Defensive Publications Series

The proliferation of artificial intelligence systems across critical infrastructure necessitates a paradigm shift from traditional software quality assurance toward probabilistic validation methodologies. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for AI model testing that synthesizes regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions—including the EU AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689), NIST AI Risk Management Framework 2.0, Federal Reserve SR 11-7, Colorado AI Act, NYC Local Law 144, and sector-specific regulations—into an integrated validation architecture applicable across financial services, healthcare, insurance, manufacturing, and retail sectors.

The framework encompasses twelve distinct testing dimensions: functional correctness, performance benchmarking, bias and fairness assessment, robustness and adversarial resilience, explainability validation, …

Segmented Touchpad Interface For Text Input On Smart Eyewear, Zhi Li, Xuelin Huang Feb 2026

Segmented Touchpad Interface For Text Input On Smart Eyewear, Zhi Li, Xuelin Huang

Defensive Publications Series

Text entry on head-mounted wearable devices is often constrained by compact interfaces, leading to slow or inaccurate input. To address these limitations, a segmented touchpad interface is provided on the temple of the wearable device. A traditional keyboard layout is split into four distinct regions, which are mapped to four corresponding segments on the physical touchpad. Each segment is configured to represent multiple characters, and text is entered through a sequence of taps on these regions.

Linear swipes along the touchpad are utilized to replicate rotational input for selecting suggestions, while long-presses and glides enable character selection from pop-up menus. …

Comparing Sociological Suicide Studies In The 1800s To Psychological Suicide Studies Now, Amanda Mic Feb 2026

Comparing Sociological Suicide Studies In The 1800s To Psychological Suicide Studies Now, Amanda Mic

CAFE Symposium 2026

Sociology can look at the numbers and explain to us the physical, concrete facts about when, where, and how suicides happen, but psychology gives us an explanation as to why it happens. This project looks into the ways that 19th century societal stigmas around suicide caused inaccuracies in the statistics that sociologists studied, and therefore their findings, as well as the abundance of discoveries on suicide and mental conditions by psychologists in more recent times.

Valentine Act And Sherman Act: Separate And Distinct Antitrust Regimes, Thomas J. Collin Feb 2026

Valentine Act And Sherman Act: Separate And Distinct Antitrust Regimes, Thomas J. Collin

Cleveland State Law Review

The Ohio Supreme Court has held that the Valentine Act was patterned after the Sherman Act and should be interpreted in light of federal court interpretations of the Sherman Act. The Court was wrong, and its error persists. With the exception of a private right of action provision and a borrowed definition, nothing in the Valentine Act was derived from the Sherman Act. The holding ignores text and legislative history and has foreclosed development of any independent jurisprudence for a statute intended by the General Assembly to address grave antitrust abuses. This Article analyzes the Court’s error, details the origins …

The Taxing Ambiguity: Defining "Return" In Bankruptcy Dischargeability Cases, Elizabeth Tsai Feb 2026

The Taxing Ambiguity: Defining "Return" In Bankruptcy Dischargeability Cases, Elizabeth Tsai

Cleveland State Law Review

This Note examines the circuit split over the dischargeability of tax debts tied to late-filed returns, which has led to inconsistent bankruptcy outcomes and inequitable treatment of debtors across jurisdictions. Some courts, adopting the strict “one-day-late” rule, hold that any tax return filed even a single day past its deadline is not a “return” for bankruptcy discharge purposes, permanently barring relief. Others apply a more flexible standard grounded in the Beard test, considering a debtor’s good-faith compliance efforts. This inconsistency contradicts the fresh start principle of bankruptcy law, disproportionately harms low-income debtors, and fails to serve the government’s tax collection …

The Fallacies Of Originalism: Why Treating History And Tradition Alone As Dispositive Is Not Superior To The Tiers Of Scrutiny, Gage A. Johnson Feb 2026

The Fallacies Of Originalism: Why Treating History And Tradition Alone As Dispositive Is Not Superior To The Tiers Of Scrutiny, Gage A. Johnson

Cleveland State Law Review

The goal of this Article is to develop the current history and tradition standard. I argue that the Bruen use of history and tradition is not a more principled or better way of interpreting the Constitution than the infamous tiers of scrutiny. This argument is supported by analyzing the way the Court has used history and tradition in reviewing restrictions on the Second Amendment and the push for it to be used under the First Amendment. I argue that Justice Thomas’s rigid application of history and tradition is essentially an ends-justifying-the-means analysis that is no different than the so called …
