Taylor Dispersion In Variable-Density, Variable-Viscosity Pulsatile Flows, Prabakaran Rajamanickam, Adam D. Weiss Mar 2026

Taylor Dispersion In Variable-Density, Variable-Viscosity Pulsatile Flows, Prabakaran Rajamanickam, Adam D. Weiss

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

The phenomenon of Taylor or shear-induced dispersion of a non-passive scalar field in a pulsatile pipe flow is investigated, accounting for the scalar field's influence on fluid density and transport coefficients. By employing multiple scale analysis, an effective one-dimensional, unsteady mixing problem for the scalar field is obtained, which includes the diffusion coefficient for shear-induced dispersion. The resulting governing equations are applicable to a range of scalar transport problems in pulsatile pipe flows.

Co-Optimization Of Compute Workloads Across Heterogeneous Data Center Fleets, Raiford Smith, Ana Radovanovic, Anant Vikram, Roman Malina

Defensive Publications Series

The isolated optimization of distinct data center fleets may lead to systemic inefficiencies and may not optimally utilize the collective compute capacity available across different infrastructures, creating challenges in cost management and reliability as well as water and energy consumption. Systems and methods are described that can provide a framework for a federated marketplace where compute demand can be expressed through standardized bids and available capacity can be advertised through standardized offers. A central optimization engine can ingest these bids and offers to match workloads with suitable data center resources based on a plurality of criteria, such as cost, latency, …

Internal Family Systems Therapy For Trauma Recovery And Addiction In Sexual And Gender Minorities, Walter Saunders Mar 2026

Internal Family Systems Therapy For Trauma Recovery And Addiction In Sexual And Gender Minorities, Walter Saunders

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sexual and gender minorities (SGM) experience disproportionately high rates of substance use disorders linked to trauma exposure, minority stress, and barriers to affirming behavioral health care. Although trauma-informed approaches have expanded, little is known about how SGM individuals experience and make meaning of their engagement in internal family systems (IFS) therapy for trauma and addiction. Guided by Schwartz’s theory of the multiplicity of the mind and minority stress theory, the purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore how SGM individuals describe and interpret their engagement in IFS therapy within the context of trauma and addiction. Interpretative phenomenological analysis …

Child Protection Workers’ Perceptions Of Burnout And Work Dissatisfaction, Ashley-Camille Jackson Mar 2026

Child Protection Workers’ Perceptions Of Burnout And Work Dissatisfaction, Ashley-Camille Jackson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Child protection workers work in a stressful and demanding occupation, subject to high staff turnover and inexperienced staff. This situation has created problems for child protection workers in doing their jobs effectively—for example, handling their daily tasks and caseload—leading to potential burnout and work dissatisfaction. Existing literature has explained how burnout begins to develop as a response to chronic exposure to job-related stressors, to a point of emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment. Researchers have found that work-related conditions have contributed to the development of burnout, especially when attempting to define how one could be overworked and how much labor …

The Good Samaritan In Australian Catholic Schools: Rethinking The Meaning Of The Parable For Catholic Identity, Maurice Ryan Mar 2026

The Good Samaritan In Australian Catholic Schools: Rethinking The Meaning Of The Parable For Catholic Identity, Maurice Ryan

eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia

The parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) has been influential in defining and directing the identity of Australian Catholic schools. Traditional interpretations of the parable focus on themes that stress love of enemies, care for those in need, and consideration of all humans as neighbour. A sub-text in understanding the parable has been the priority accorded to Christian conceptions of compassion over and against perceptions of Jewish adherence to legal requirements to observe purity prescriptions. This article seeks to challenge these traditional ideas about the meaning of the parable. A refreshed understanding of the parable offers Catholic schools more …

New Avenues For |Δb=2| Processes Beyond Neutron-Antineutron Oscillations, Arnau Basi Beneito, Svjetlana Fajfer, Alexey A. Petrov Mar 2026

New Avenues For |Δb=2| Processes Beyond Neutron-Antineutron Oscillations, Arnau Basi Beneito, Svjetlana Fajfer, Alexey A. Petrov

Faculty Publications

We explore baryon-number-violating (|∆B| = 2) processes beyond the well-known neutron-antineutron (n-n̄) oscillations, focusing on the Λ-Λ̄ system. The presence of a strange quark in the Λ baryon introduces a new set of six-quark operators roughly of the form (uds)2, which are different from the (udd)2 operators responsible for n-n̄ oscillations. Using the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), we classify all dimension-9 operators that cause |∆B| = 2  transitions and study their UV completions mediated by exotic scalar fields with trilinear interactions. We demonstrate that …

Associational Inference With Many Potential Covariates: Bayesian Information Criterion Elastic Net, Farideh Bagherzadeh Khiabani, I-Chan Huang, Jose Miguel Martinez Martinez, Shizue Izumi, Sedigheh Mirzaei, Tiange Zheng, Irina Dinu, Yutaka Yasui Mar 2026

Associational Inference With Many Potential Covariates: Bayesian Information Criterion Elastic Net, Farideh Bagherzadeh Khiabani, I-Chan Huang, Jose Miguel Martinez Martinez, Shizue Izumi, Sedigheh Mirzaei, Tiange Zheng, Irina Dinu, Yutaka Yasui

COBRA Preprint Series

Background: An emerging feature in modern biomedical research is collecting and analyzing numerous variables. In the presence of many potential covariates, inference becomes challenging requiring both distinguishing a set of covariates truly associated with an outcome and estimating their corresponding regression coefficients consistently. Traditional statistical inference typically focuses on estimating coefficients assuming a pre-specified set of covariates. Further, advanced machine/statistical learning methods performing both selection and estimation predominantly focus on outcome prediction rather than association inference.

Methods: Motivated by our epidemiological research on long-term childhood cancer survivors, where we aimed to investigate associations between a large pool of longitudinal symptom …

The Role Of Autophagy In Intestinal Infection In Mice And C. Elegans, Gowri Kalugotla Mar 2026

The Role Of Autophagy In Intestinal Infection In Mice And C. Elegans, Gowri Kalugotla

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Although autophagy, which is the process by which cells reallocate nutrients and eliminate unwanted materials, has been studied for decades, the connections between autophagy, inflammation, and viral immunity are still under investigation. Our studies focus on two genes: murine Epg5, which is involved in fusion of the autophagosome and lysosome, and C. elegans atg-3, which is important for the elongation of the phagophore. Here, we find that Epg5 mutation protects against enteric viruses including norovirus and rotavirus. We identify IFN- responsive genes as a key alteration and observe that Epg5 mutant mice exhibit substantial alterations in the intestinal microbiota. Surprisingly, …

Energetic Heterogeneity In Retinal Ganglion Cells: Role Of Neuronal Activity And Implications For Resilience, Zelun Wang Mar 2026

Energetic Heterogeneity In Retinal Ganglion Cells: Role Of Neuronal Activity And Implications For Resilience, Zelun Wang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) form the only connection between the eye and the brain via their axons in the optic nerve. In diseases such as glaucoma, RGCs undergo irreversible neurodegeneration leading to vision loss. RGCs consist of multiple types differing in morphology, gene expression, and signaling properties. Moreover, these types exhibit differential survival after axon injury. What cellular properties vary between RGC types that could underlie their heterogeneous response to neurodegeneration? Given that energy metabolism is tightly optimized for the homeostatic and active functions of different neurons, physiologically distinct RGC types likely exhibit divergent energetic characteristics. Furthermore, energy metabolism is …

Calling Rural Parents: Impact Of Information And Communication Technology On Parental Involvement, Rachel M.H. Robertson Mar 2026

Calling Rural Parents: Impact Of Information And Communication Technology On Parental Involvement, Rachel M.H. Robertson

College of Education

Rural, Title I schools in West Alabama faced socioeconomic and geographic barriers that limited equitable access to education. A key factor affecting student achievement in these contexts was parental involvement, which research has shown was lower in rural areas. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the relationship between communication and parental involvement in these two schools. Guided by Epstein’s framework of overlapping spheres of influence, Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler’s parental involvement model, and Rogers and Wright’s (2008) research on the role of communication in cultivating effective school-to-home partnerships, the researcher investigated the relationship between information and communication technologies …

Three Butterfly Genera Across The Central Texas Suture Zone, Qian Cong, Jing Zhang, Jinhui Shen, Leina Song, Nick V. Grishin

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Genome-scale analyses of butterfly specimens across the Central Texas Suture Zone revealed that several taxa currently treated as subspecies exhibit genomic differentiation similar to that observed between species. Further investigation and genomic sequencing of additional specimens from across the ranges of these taxa support this conclusion and result in the following changes to nomenclature and taxonomy. Two new subspecies of Nymphalidae Rafinesque, 1815 are described: Asterocampa louisa monterra Grishin, ssp. n. (type locality in Mexico: Nuevo León) and Asterocampa clyton plana Grishin, ssp. n. (type locality in USA: Texas, Denton Co.). The following taxa are recognized as species, not subspecies: …

Optimising Human–Ai Decision Performance: A Trust And Capability Framework For Knowledge Management, Eduardo Carlos Dittmar, Martin Sposato Mar 2026

Optimising Human–Ai Decision Performance: A Trust And Capability Framework For Knowledge Management, Eduardo Carlos Dittmar, Martin Sposato

All Works

Organisations struggle to optimise human–AI collaboration in knowledge-intensive decision-making. This paper proposes the Trust–Complementarity Model of Collective Intelligence (TCM-CI), explaining how calibrated trust and complementary capability utilisation drive superior organisational performance. Through systematic synthesis of human–AI interaction and knowledge management research, we identify three core mechanisms: (1) calibrated trust maximises collective intelligence by balancing appropriate reliance with necessary oversight, (2) complementarity–trust interaction determines optimal performance when high capability utilisation combines with appropriate trust levels and (3) dynamic feedback loops create reinforcing organisational learning cycles. The framework provides practical guidance for executives designing human–AI teams, developing trust calibration training, and establishing …

No Effect In Plasma Corticosterone Levels After Observation Of Diseased Conspecifics, B. M. Hardy, M. Chang, S. Mccallum, S. Santangelo, Patricia C. Lopes

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Organisms commonly respond to stressors in their environment by increasing the secretion of corticosterone (CORT). While increased CORT is acknowledged as a response to predation risk by organisms inhabiting a landscape of fear, new research raises the potential for changes in CORT as a response to the risk of infection by organisms in their environment. An increase in CORT of a healthy, uninfected individual in response to their perception of the risk of infection in their environment could change their susceptibility to infection, highlighting a significant role for CORT to alter host–pathogen dynamics. To investigate the effects of infection risk …

Physical Changes Of Biomacromolecules Upon Covalent Surface Immobilization, Bianca Mercado Velez, Vaishali Sharma, Seth Kriz, Erico Freitas, Paul Goetsch, Caryn Heldt

Michigan Tech Publications

Immobilization of large biomacromolecules is often required for analytical quantification and physicochemical characterization. However, immobilization can alter the structure and size of the particles being studied. Here, two exosomes (derived from HEK-293 and MDA-MB-231 cells) and three viral particles (Suid herpesvirus 1 (SuHV), xenotropic murine leukemia virus (XmuLV), and porcine parvovirus (PPV)) were immobilized to different covalent chemistries to understand how surface chemistry influences particle deformation during immobilization. The surface chemistries explored were: (i) NHS (N-hydroxysulfosuccinimide) and EDC (1-ethyl-3-(3-(dimethylamino)propyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride), and (ii) poly l-lysine (PLL) and glutaraldehyde (GA). Morphological changes in biomolecules following immobilization were quantified by …

Database-Driven Revelations In Epilepsy: Patient Reporting Accuracy And The Circadian Timing Of Seizures, Ithay Biton

Theses and Dissertations

For over thirty years, patients have been visiting the Arkansas Epilepsy Program for diagnosis and treatment for seizures and seizure-like episodes. As part of their clinical evaluation, patients often undergo ambulatory EEG (electroencephalogram) monitoring. This routine process produces valuable data for treating the patient. In this study, over 2000 ambulatory EEG reports from 1998 to 2016 were reviewed. A large database of seizures was created from the reports, with information on 407 patients, 1611 EEG-confirmed seizures, and 1726 patient-reported seizures (IRB Protocol #17-093). The database was used to address two important issues in epilepsy. The first topic of the study …

Periodontal Disease And Its Association With Porphyromonas Gingivalis: Current Understanding Of Microbial Dysbiosis, Immunopathology And Immune Evasion, Samantha Robins, Alex Strachan, Vehid Salih, Andrew Foey

Peninsula Dental School

Porphyromonas gingivalis is described as a keystone pathogen associated with periodontal disease (PD), which exhibits enhanced representation upon microbial dysbiosis in such a chronic inflammatory disease. This oral pathogen drives and contributes to a dysregulated immune response, resulting in stages of aggressive destructive immune activation and inflammation punctuated by immune suppression, which underlies the relapsing–remitting nature of this disease. The understanding of key mechanisms and balance between protective innate, adaptive immune responses and dysregulated responses, linked to changes in the oral mucosal microbial environment, will afford researchers the potential to manipulate oral mucosal environments for clinical benefit. This review focuses …
