Reasoning In Large Language Models Across Multilingual, Long-Context, And Symbolic Settings, Sina Bagheri Nezhad
Reasoning In Large Language Models Across Multilingual, Long-Context, And Symbolic Settings, Sina Bagheri Nezhad
Dissertations and Theses
Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed as general-purpose reasoners, yet their reliability degrades in three settings that frequently arise in practice: multilingual inputs, long contexts, and symbolic or formally constrained domains. In multilingual settings, uneven training coverage produces substantial performance disparities and uncertain generalization to languages with little or negligible pretraining exposure. In long-context settings, relevant evidence may be sparsely distributed, and models exhibit the "lost-in-the-middle" phenomenon, undermining retrieval and multi-step synthesis. In symbolic settings such as mathematics, small arithmetic or logical slips invalidate solutions, and prose rationales are difficult to verify automatically.
This dissertation first characterizes these failure …
The Development And Validation Of A Portable Monitoring System For Real-World Prosthetic And Orthotic Performance Assessment, Emily Wyatt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Laboratory-based motion capture systems are widely used for gait analysis but are limited by high cost, infrastructure requirements, and restricted external validity. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer a portable and low-cost alternative for assessing gait in both controlled and real-world environments; however, their accuracy and clinical utility require validation. The purpose of this thesis was to develop and evaluate a portable monitoring system using IMUs to quantify spatiotemporal gait parameters and gait asymmetry in both laboratory and community settings, with a focus on prosthetic and orthotic users.
Phase 1 of this study evaluated the agreement between IMU-derived gait metrics and …
Remotely Training Applied Behavior Analysis Practitioners To Conduct A Repeated Latency Functional Analysis, W. Daniel Oliver-Wong
Remotely Training Applied Behavior Analysis Practitioners To Conduct A Repeated Latency Functional Analysis, W. Daniel Oliver-Wong
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has established functional analyses (Iwata et al., 1982/1994) as valuable tools for ABA practitioners. Despite previous findings, behavior analysts often default to other methods when identifying the maintaining variables of problem behavior. Several studies have examined training methods and variations of traditional functional analyses to increase clinical applications. The Repeated Latency Functional Analysis (RLFA) is a newly developed adaptation to the functional analysis (Han et. al., 2023). This study used video modeling to train three ABA practitioners in RLFA procedures through online role-play scenarios. The findings suggested that online video modeling is a promising training modality for ABA …

Amplicon Sequencing Reveals Shifts In Microbial Community Composition In Response To Nutrient-Dense Piney Point Emergency Discharges, Christa A. Baranowski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Due to a leak in the lining of a phosphogypsum pond at the former Piney Point phosphate-processing facility in Tampa Bay (Florida, U.S.A.), experienced a large influx of nutrient-dense waters in the early summer of 2021. As an emergency response effort, water samples were collected by researchers at the University of South Florida, College of Marine Science (USF CMS), covering the lower and middle regions of Tampa Bay (TB), over the span of three months (April – June). Illumina amplicon sequencing was performed on DNA from water samples, targeting bacterial and eukaryotic ribosomal rRNA genes, and processed into Amplicon Sequence …
Assessing Capability, Opportunity, And Motivation In Relation To Guideline Adherence For Inherited Cancer Risk, Cecilia L. Delisanti
Assessing Capability, Opportunity, And Motivation In Relation To Guideline Adherence For Inherited Cancer Risk, Cecilia L. Delisanti
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Although National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines provide cancer screening or risk reduction recommendations for individuals with germline pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants (GPVs) in actionable hereditary cancer genes, guideline adherence remains inconsistent, and the behavioral contributors to this gap remain understudied. To identify behavioral factors related to adherence across inherited cancer risk genes, this study used the COM-B model, which posits that capability, opportunity, and motivation shape health behaviors.
Methods: IMPACT study participants, all with GPVs in a variety of actionable genes, completed surveys (N=575). Minimal adherence was based on gene-specific NCCN guidelines. COM-B constructs (capability, opportunity, motivation) …

Rethinking Legal Education: Demystifying Neurodiversity And Building An Inclusive Future, Jennifer Kindred Mitchell, Charlie Amiot
The Journal of Law Teaching and Learning
This article contributes significantly to the discourse on legal education by arguing that embracing neurodiversity not only enhances the learning environment for all students but also cultivates a legal profession that is truly reflective of societal diversity. Ultimately, neurodiversity should be embraced as an asset. By adopting inclusive practices, legal education can nurture the promise of ND students and improve outcomes for all. This article seeks to inspire a new paradigm that celebrates neurocognitive diversity’s contributions to the legal profession.
Neurodivergent (ND) students comprise approximately a quarter of the law school population, yet traditional legal education often fails to meet …
Multi-Dimensional Research Appraisal: A Holistic Approach To Evidence-Informed Practice, John Damiao
Multi-Dimensional Research Appraisal: A Holistic Approach To Evidence-Informed Practice, John Damiao
Translational Science in Occupation
The field of occupational therapy (OT) and healthcare in general have made great strides in enhancing their scientific rigor through study methodologies that prioritize internal validity. However, concerns regarding reproducibility and replicability in research have cast doubt on traditional evidence-based models. This paper critically examines the limitations of an over-reliance on internal validity in evidence reviews and advocates for a multi-dimensional approach to evidence-based practice. By integrating methodological holism, contextual analysis, and a critical appraisal of external validity, this approach provides practitioners with a more nuanced and applicable framework for decision-making. The implications for research credibility and clinical confidence are …

The (Non-) Protection Of Indigenous Rights In Isds, Dr. Kevin W. Gray
The (Non-) Protection Of Indigenous Rights In Isds, Dr. Kevin W. Gray
Pace International Law Review
International investment law largely flows from the protections afforded foreign investors under bilateral and multilateral investment treaties. Until recently, few of these treaties required investors to comply with human rights provisions in national constitutions or in international law, or preserved the ability of states to regulate to protect constitutional rights. As a result, critics have argued, investor-state dispute settlement fails to protect human rights or preserve the ability of states to regulate in the public interest, and that arbitral awards rarely consider, let alone give effect to, rules of human rights.
This article considers the question of how Indigenous rights, …

Interactive Visual Disambiguation For Natural Language Database Queries, Timo Hoyer
Interactive Visual Disambiguation For Natural Language Database Queries, Timo Hoyer
Defensive Publications Series
Systems that translate natural language to database queries may encounter challenges with ambiguous terms, for example, 'high-value' or 'recent'. A system for interactive visual disambiguation can visually identify and highlight uncertain terms within a user’s natural language input. A user can interact with a highlighted term to generate a manipulatable graphical tether that connects the term to an interactive logic card. This card may provide controls, such as sliders, for refining the definition of the term. As a user adjusts a definition, a data projection engine can update a data preview in near real-time to illustrate the potential impact of …
Entropy-Gated Probabilistic Inference For Optical Financial Identifier Recognition, Jack Ngare
Entropy-Gated Probabilistic Inference For Optical Financial Identifier Recognition, Jack Ngare
Defensive Publications Series
Recognizing financial identifiers from variable or degraded optical inputs can be challenging, as conventional deterministic scanners may fail and general-purpose optical character recognition systems may lack semantic logic. A system can employ a cascaded inference pipeline that first assesses the visual entropy of an optical input. Based on this assessment, the input can be routed to either a fast, deterministic decoder for low-entropy signals or a probabilistic inference engine for high-entropy signals. The probabilistic engine could generate multiple candidate identifiers and use a reasoning model, constrained by financial domain logic, to evaluate a plausible candidate. A validation layer can then …

AUIQ Complementary Biological System
Perioperative fluid therapy is a cornerstone of anesthetic management in cardiac surgery, where both hypovolemia and hypervolemia are associated with increased morbidity, forming a ``U-shaped'' relationship with outcomes. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from peer-reviewed literature (2000–2024) identified via PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Database, focusing on randomized trials, meta-analyses, and guidelines for adult cardiac surgery. A central debate persists regarding fluid choice. Current evidence supports the preferential use of balanced crystalloids over normal saline, as large-volume saline is linked to hyperchloremic acidosis and reduced renal perfusion. Colloids like albumin and hydroxyethyl starch (HES) offer efficient volume expansion but require …

Warm-Ups To Works Of Art: How Engaging Choral Students In Fundamentals Of Music Leads To The Creative Outlet Of Songwriting", Clay E. Bradford
SPARK Symposium Presentations
When students typically participate in public school choir, they may learn songs from varying different cultures, genres, and styles spanning from different periods of music and countries. This music is incredibly important for the foundation of student learning; however, students are often consumers rather than generators of music. By then taking the basic music theory students may have, and applying it to songwriting parameters and practices, students are able to compose their own music! This not only teaches students to experiment with songwriting but encourages this creative outlet of composition - something they haven't previously encountered before in choir or …

Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are excellent targets for indirect dark matter (DM) searches using gamma-ray telescopes because they are thought to have high DM content and a low astrophysical background. The sensitivity of these searches is improved by combining the observations of dSphs made by different gamma-ray telescopes. We present the results of a combined search by the most sensitive currently operating gamma-ray telescopes, namely: the satellite-borne Fermi-LAT telescope; the ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS; and the HAWC water Cherenkov detector. Individual datasets were analyzed using a common statistical approach. Results were subsequently combined via …

Virtual reality offers a promising avenue for the assessment of executive functioning in complex workplace environments. However, its use in schizophrenia remains limited. For that reason, we investigated the validity and test-retest reliability of the Jansari assessment of Executive Functions (JEF©) in individuals with schizophrenia and its associations with competitive employment. A total of 69 participants with schizophrenia and 67 healthy controls completed JEF© and standard tests. A subsample of 58 patients was retested after an 8-week interval. Individuals with schizophrenia performed more poorly than controls on JEF© (p < 0.001) and standard tests (p < 0.05). JEF© scores correlated with standard measures (p < 0.05), except inhibition tests, and with clinician-report of everyday problems (p < 0.001). Total score showed a good test-retest reliability and the practice adjusted RCI indicated 87.9% of patients remained stable over 8 weeks. In logistic regression, higher JEF© total score significantly predicted competitive employment after adjusting for age (p = 0.004) and remained significant when …

In this article, we propose a novel numerical framework for the non-isothermal Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes two-phase flow system, which couples the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, the Cahn–Hilliard phase-field equation, and the heat transport equation to capture temperature-dependent two-phase flow dynamics. The pro-posed scheme achieves three major advances: (i) unconditional energy stability through a combined scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) and zero-energy-contribution (ZEC) approach, (ii) linearity and full decoupling of all variables while using a second-order temporal discretization, and (iii) efficient implementation via discontinuous Galerkin (DG) spa-tial discretization together with a second-order projection method for the Navier–Stokes equations. We rigorously prove the unconditional energy stability …
