Noaa Or&R Remote Sensing /Uas Workshop Report, Coastal Response Research Center
Coastal Response Research Center
NOAA’s DPP partnered with CRRC to plan and facilitate a hybrid workshop over two days at UNH’s Memorial Union Building (MUB) in Durham, NH. This workshop titled “NOAA OR&R Remote Sensing/UAS Workshop” identified overarching concepts, knowledge gaps, challenges, and research regarding the current capabilities of oil spill remote sensing of NOAA and its partners, including government and state agencies, and the private sector (e.g., OSROs, contractors). The resulting conversations explored state of the art technologies that could be deployed during a spill event and complications introduced to response and recovery efforts by data delivery timelines, data products, and remote sensing …

A Theory Of Economic Justice, Marshall Paul Forrester
A Theory Of Economic Justice, Marshall Paul Forrester
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation develops a theory of economic justice. It begins with an economic state of nature, much like Hobbes's political state of nature. In the economic state of nature, there is no economic cooperation through the division of labor and specialization, and everyone is very poor. The purpose of the dissertation is to identify the conditions for just economic cooperation. I argue that each participant in economic cooperation should be rewarded according to their contributions. The first chapter draws on Henry George to argue that there is a fundamental difference between land and the other two factors of production, labor …

The implementation of the audit from the local government financial statements by The Audit Board of The Republic of Indonesia (BPK RI), especially for the Province X representative, are frequently faced by the various limitations, one of them being the required audit time. At this moment, the BPK RI representative of Province X doesn’t have the tools that are able to help the accurate of sample determination for the pick test, which resulted in this study proposing the application of multi-label classification to predict the findings of financial statement (Laporan Keuangan, LK) audits based on financial and non …
Ukraine’S Proxy War Against Russia And Its Lessons For Europe, David M. Sip
Ukraine’S Proxy War Against Russia And Its Lessons For Europe, David M. Sip
Journal of Strategic Security
Much focus in the research on the topic of proxies and Ukraine is on the Russian proxies in the Donbas. But Ukraine itself is fielding several proxy groups formed from Russian exiles and minorities such as Chechen's fighting for the freedom of their home. By interpreting Ukraine’s proxy war against Russia as a means of inter-war deterrence this article proposes that Ukraine aims at deterring Russia from a general mobilization and an all-out escalation of the war. The effectiveness of this approach, its limits, and problems are analyzed, as well as the mistakes Ukraine has made in taking this approach. …

Lectures On Cultural Space Economics: A Study Of Mutual Economy And Holistics, Victor L. Tonn
Faculty and Staff - Ebooks
In light of holistics, this book presents lectures on culture-space economics which is ultimately rooted in the mutual economy. As a frontier approach to study humanities and socio-political and economic phenomena, holistics introduces various formulations of systrix. With its framework of wealth creation-accumulation and humane distributions, the book introduces the economic mechanisms employed to investigate the systematic and holistic transformations of the human economy in the era of earth-space transformations. To deal with the economic competition between the U.S. and China of the twenty-first century, an in-depth analysis of the hegemonic competition between Type I and Type II Economies are …

Reimagining The Role Of Maine’S Rural Hospitals: Preparing For The Future, John Gale
All Maine Rural Health Research Center Publications
Maine’s rural hospitals struggle with workforce shortages, high operating costs, inadequate reimbursement, and patients bypassing their local hos pitals to access services outside of the community. Since 2013, four Maine acute care hospitals have terminated inpatient operations. Evolving chal lenges include a declining need for inpatient beds, growth in Medicare Advantage and value-based payment plans, escalating healthcare costs, and the Reconciliation Act (HR 1), which contains provisions expected to harm ru ral hospitals, providers, and residents. To partially offset the anticipated neg ative impact of the bill, HR 1 also provides $50 billion in funding for a five-year Rural Health …

Impacts Of Early/Mid-Gestation Shearing On Umbilical Blood Flow And Lamb Birth Weight, Mara Johnson
Impacts Of Early/Mid-Gestation Shearing On Umbilical Blood Flow And Lamb Birth Weight, Mara Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Studies outside the USA have reported that shearing pregnant ewes during mid to late gestation increases lamb birth weight. Our hypothesis was that shearing pregnant ewes on day 50 of gestation would increase umbilical blood flow (UBF), fetal size, lambing and placental weights. Twenty-eight Polypay ewes were randomly assigned to two treatments: shorn (S) and sham-shorn (Control, CON) and divided in singleton (S: n=4; CON: n=4), twins (S: n=5; CON: n=5) and triplets (S: n=5; CON: n=5). Umbilical BF and fetal and placental measurements were obtained via ultrasonography every 10 days from day 50 to 110 of gestation. Lamb birth …

Impact Of Parental Involvement On Children’S Mental Health, Syeda Tasnime Kabir
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study estimates the causal effect of parental involvement on the mental health of primary school children in Bangladesh. Using an instrumental variables strategy that leverages local parental involvement norms, I find that increased parental involvement significantly reduces cognitive and emotional difficulties. Notably, I find that the protective effect of parental involvement varies by socio-economic context, showing weaker effects for children of mothers who married at an older age and those whose fathers live outside the household, but stronger effects in joint families. Furthermore, I identify two key mechanisms underlying these effects: accommodating parenting style and improved household hygiene practices. …
Isolation And Characterization Of Rhizobia Bacteria From Midwest Soils, Jr Loya
Isolation And Characterization Of Rhizobia Bacteria From Midwest Soils, Jr Loya
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Symbiotic bacteria, known as rhizobia, can colonize the roots of legume plants and then convert atmospheric nitrogen into a usable form by the host through the process called biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). Many of these bacteria produce other plant-growth-promoting benefits, such as nutrient acquisition, phytohormone production, and the modification of plant stress responses. Agricultural inoculants made from these bacteria have helped reduce the need for man-made nitrogenous fertilizers, known causes of pollution and eutrophication. There are additional benefits in developing bacteria inoculants local to regional soils. The ability to survive and compete in Midwest soil and climates present an opportunity …
A New Dawn Of Joy: How Joy Is Cultivated Among Black Transgender And Nonbinary Young Adults In Florida, Courtney Marciá Gardner
A New Dawn Of Joy: How Joy Is Cultivated Among Black Transgender And Nonbinary Young Adults In Florida, Courtney Marciá Gardner
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
The state of Florida had a record-breaking number of implemented and proposed policies between 2023-2024 that impacted transgender and nonbinary individuals. Black transgender and nonbinary people are particularly impacted by these policies due to the compounded effects of their race and gender identity. Nonetheless, despite the growing literature on Black transgender and nonbinary individuals, a lack of research exists examining positive aspects of intersectional experiences among Black transgender and nonbinary individuals. This qualitative study shifts away from deficit centered frameworks by investigating how Black transgender and nonbinary young adults in Florida cultivate joy in their lives. This study uses a …

The Sociological Engagement In John Coltrane's A Love Supreme: Examining The Impacts Of Race, Music, And Culture In Video-Based Learning Amongst College Students, Kinyel K. Ragland Sr.
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This project consists primarily of the interest in Video Based Learning (VBL) and understanding the impacts of a video based on the connections between John Coltrane’s song Acknowledgement on the Jazz suite A Love Supreme to the Civil Rights movement and systemic racism. Research confirms that VBL has an impact on student learning, yet this project finds that because of the content of the video, it fits into scholarship where there are gaps. The methodological approach, which was qualitative, found that students were overall enlightened, entertained, and were interested in learning more. Other findings include suggestions and recommendations for future …

Queer And Thriving: Community As Resilience In An Anti-Lgbtq State, Lauren Aitken
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people are subject to unique, chronic, and socially based stressors known as minority stressors. Community can be an important resource for LGBTQ people which can help mitigate the harmful effects of minority stressors. This study sought to understand how minority stressors, such as institutionalized forms of prejudice, discrimination, and violence, affect LGBTQ people in Central Florida and how community connectedness can be used as a resource to mitigate those effects. This study used Central Florida as a research site because of its large LGBTQ population within a state where anti-LGBTQ laws are consistently …
Critical Appraisal Of Language Assessment Tasks For African American Children, Tamara Diana Jacobs
Critical Appraisal Of Language Assessment Tasks For African American Children, Tamara Diana Jacobs
Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-
Language assessment is a fundamental aspect of the speech-language therapist's role. However, a critical examination of standardized assessments reveals their historical association with constructing disability and exerting control over individuals with a disability, often rooted in the medical model of disability (Nair et al., 2023). As a result, there has been a growing interest in developing alternative methods for evaluating language and speech, particularly in diverse populations (Hyter, 2022). This interest has extended to the study of assessment methods within urban communities, including African American English (AAE) speakers.
Language assessment is a fundamental aspect of the speech-language therapist's role. However, …

Of Mice And Men: The Regulation Of Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Latency In Mouse And Human Neurons, Paige N. Canova
Of Mice And Men: The Regulation Of Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Latency In Mouse And Human Neurons, Paige N. Canova
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) establishes latent infections in sensory neurons, from which HSV sporadically reactivates, often due to external stress and other stimuli. Latency and reactivation are commonly studied using in vivo and ex vivo models in a variety of hosts, as well as in vitro models including primary mouse neurons and neurons derived from human pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The criteria for authentically modeling HSV latency include the ability to easily manipulate host genetics and biological pathways, as well as mimicking the immune response and viral pathogenesis in human infections. Presently, there remains a pressing need for …
Exploring The Benefits, Barriers, And Sustainability Of Community Stem Partnerships: A Qualitative Case Study On Stem Collaboration In Elementary Education, Katherine M. Blagden
Exploring The Benefits, Barriers, And Sustainability Of Community Stem Partnerships: A Qualitative Case Study On Stem Collaboration In Elementary Education, Katherine M. Blagden
Open Access Dissertations
In an era of increasing emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, elementary schools often face significant challenges in implementing high-quality, integrated STEM instruction. These challenges include limited resources, inconsistent professional development, and a lack of access to real-world, community-based learning experiences (Dorph et al., 2018; National Science Board, 2024). This dissertation explores how collaborative partnerships among elementary schools, community organizations, and industry professionals can overcome these barriers and foster meaningful, sustainable STEM learning opportunities for young students. Drawing on the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) model (Kretzmann & McKnight, 1993) and informed by a constructivist theoretical framework (Vygotsky, …
Consumer And Environmental Preferences: Discrete Choice Experiments And Machine Learning Applications In Ev Battery Adoption And Aquatic Invasive Species Management, Lufan Helen Liu

As climate change and resource scarcity drive a global shift toward cleaner energy systems and environmental conservation, understanding how individuals value sustainability-related interventions has become increasingly important. This dissertation contributes to this growing body of knowledge by applying and advancing discrete choice experiment (DCE) methodology to assess consumer and public preferences for two key environmental policy domains: (1) repurposed electric vehicle (EV) batteries for residential energy storage and (2) aquatic invasive species (AIS) management in New York State. Across all three chapters, the study examines how traditional econometric models and emerging machine learning (ML) methods can complement each other in …
The Assessment Of Implicit Bias Among Police Personnel: A Systematic Review, Emily Deutsch
The Assessment Of Implicit Bias Among Police Personnel: A Systematic Review, Emily Deutsch
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the essential and powerful role police officers play within the communities they serve, systematic racism in law enforcement has become a key topic of public discourse, including increased demand for evidence-based changes in police selection. This includes recommendations or requirements to assess implicit bias in police candidates (e.g., California Assembly Bill 846). Implicit bias refers to the spontaneous/automatic associations or evaluations made of members of a particular group (Kim & Roberson, 2021). The California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training’s (POST’s) Bias Assessment Framework provides recommendations to police psychologists on the assessment of implicit bias, but curiously …
Either At The Table Or On The Menu: Strategies For Enabling Practitioner-Led Policy Co-Creation In Education Systems, Robert Reyes
Either At The Table Or On The Menu: Strategies For Enabling Practitioner-Led Policy Co-Creation In Education Systems, Robert Reyes
Theses and Dissertations
Demands for educational transformation present unparalleled challenges for practitioners, as successive reform initiatives often exclude their voices and discount their expertise. Despite empirical evidence recognizing educators as key agents of change, systemic barriers continue to hinder their participation in policy-centered decision making. This study underscores the urgent need for education systems to invest in practitioner capacity-building, structural enablement, and cross-sector collaboration to create a more equitable and responsive future for education governance. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed to explore how best to prepare and enable PK-12 practitioners to co-create education policy at the state level, aiming to empower them …
Resilience And Stress: Trauma, Grit, Resilience And Perceived Organizational Support In First Responders, Paige Gallas Parker
Resilience And Stress: Trauma, Grit, Resilience And Perceived Organizational Support In First Responders, Paige Gallas Parker
Theses and Dissertations
First responders comprise an underserved and under-researched population, despite consensus that their work involves exposure to potentially traumatic events. Inconsistent definitions of “first responder” and unclear prevalence rates of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) limit efforts to assess and promote resilience. This study examined the relationships between grit, resilience, perceived organizational support, and trauma symptoms in a sample of 234 first responders (69% firefighters, 29% lifeguards) employed by a large West Coast fire department. Measures included a demographics questionnaire, the Professional Exposure to Traumatic Events (PETE), the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-5), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), the Short Grit Scale …

Practitioner Perspectives On Barriers And Opportunities Shaping Contemporary Dei, Carlen Arima
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the lived experiences of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practitioners to understand the barriers and opportunities shaping their work in the current landscape. The study identified conditions for success, including two organizational conditions (authentic leadership commitment and strategic business alignment), three practitioner-driven strategies (human resource operations and systemic integration, use of data and metrics, and adaptive framing to increase adoption), and three persistent barriers (leadership support without operational follow-through, funding and time constraints, and structural marginalization of DEI). A central finding revealed that leadership commitment was both the most cited enabler of success and, when lacking operational …

Evaluating The Early Impact Of Ab 617: Air Pollution, Health Disparities, And Environmental Justice In California, Cherry Cheuk Lam Cheung, Adam Eckerd
School of Public Service Faculty Publications
This study evaluates the initial effectiveness of California’s Assembly Bill 617 (AB 617), enacted to address air pollution impacts in communities designated as environmental justice priorities, a policy approach that has recently been touted as a successful start. These claims of initial success stand in contrast to much of the research on remediation of environmental justice, particularly with respect to air pollution. Despite well-documented disparities in air pollution exposure and its health impacts among racial-ethnic minorities, previous policy efforts to mitigate these effects have had, at best, marginal effects. AB 617 mandates local air districts and the California Air Resources …
