Initial Fungal Decomposer Community Determines Wood-Derived Carbon In Discrete Soil Carbon Pools In Aspen Clearcuts, Theresa K. Meyer
Initial Fungal Decomposer Community Determines Wood-Derived Carbon In Discrete Soil Carbon Pools In Aspen Clearcuts, Theresa K. Meyer
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Soil carbon storage can be affected by forest management activities that alter the amount of biomass at a site, including slash retention and salvage harvesting. Initial fungal colonization of retained biomass may affect soil carbon storage due to differences in fungal decomposition strategies. To examine the effect of wood addition on wood-derived soil carbon storage and the interaction between initial fungal decomposer communities and wood application depth, δ13C modified wood inoculated with white- or brown-rot fungi was applied to soils across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Wood-derived carbon was assessed after 3.5 years in bulk soil samples and in three …
Life Cycle Assessment And Life Cycle Cost Assessment Of A Floating Treatment Wetland In A Wastewater Lagoon Located In Copper Harbor, Michigan, Erin Browne
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
A full-scale floating treatment wetland was implemented in a wastewater treatment lagoon in Copper Harbor, Michigan. Copper Harbor is a small, rural community located in a cold climate. Many studies have focused on the performance of floating treatment wetlands in mesocosm studies in warmer climates, but there is not a lot of research conducted on the feasibility and performance of full-scale floating treatment wetlands in wastewater lagoons, specifically in cold climates. The 2024 treatment season was the first season with the floating treatment wetland implemented in the wastewater lagoon. A preliminary assessment of the cost and environmental impacts of a …
Patient Handling Interventions And Their Role In Reducing Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Healthcare Workers, Ashley L. Hawke
Patient Handling Interventions And Their Role In Reducing Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Healthcare Workers, Ashley L. Hawke
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are prominent among healthcare professionals, especially those who perform manual patient handling tasks. Assistive devices (e.g., slider sheet, gait belt, mechanical lift) have been used for patient handling. However, the effectiveness of these devices in reducing MSD risk factors is varied. Additionally, the relationship between healthcare workers’ acceptability of patient handling devices and organizational policies that facilitate or hinder widespread implementation is not well understood. The goal of my dissertation was to conduct a comprehensive analysis of existing patient handling devices and their role in mitigating MSD risk among healthcare workers. For Study 1, I conducted a …
Stepper Motor Load Estimation Using A Neural Network, Soham S. Kulkarni
Stepper Motor Load Estimation Using A Neural Network, Soham S. Kulkarni
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Bipolar stepper motors are common in scenarios that require low-cost precision including 3d printers. The ability to estimate stepper motor load provides an opportunity for health monitoring. For example, excessive load estimates may indicate a future problem in the driven system such as bearing wear. Stepper motor drivers often have built-in stall detection strategies that exploit the driver's precise knowledge of the high-frequency voltage pulses being sent to the motor. The goal of this work was to develop a retrofit approach to stepper motor load estimation using externally measured voltage, current, and speed. A stepper motor dynamometer was created to …

Florentine Impressions: Artists Abroad, Jaylin Vander Wiel
Honors Program Theses
Florence, Italy has long been a destination for traveling artists and those looking for international inspiration. I wanted to be part of this tradition and experience my own contemporary version of the Grand Tour, a rite of passage trip to Europe for men in the 17th to early 19th century. Several notable female artists also participated in the Grand Tour or their own European travel and served as inspiration for this project. As someone who values travel and planned to study abroad, I was drawn to this history and the idea of developing as a person and artist through immersion …

Comparing Custom And Transfer-Learning Cnn Models For Chest X-Ray Classification: Evaluating Performance And Scalability With Kubernetes Orchestration., Christopher Anich
ICT
Chest radiography (CXR) is the primary imaging tool for respiratory diseases, but interpretation can be time-consuming and requires expertise. This study compares a small custom CNN (Victorio) with three transfer-learning models (MobileNetV2, EfficientNet-B0, ResNet-50) for three-class CXR classification (normal, pneumonia, tuberculosis) and evaluates deployment on a Kubernetes cluster. Using a balanced dataset of ~13,500 CXRs, models were trained with ImageNet pre-training and from scratch. Transfer-learning models achieved near-perfect accuracy (99–100%) and AUROC, while the custom CNN reached 87–91%. Explainability analyses confirmed models focused on relevant pulmonary regions. Kubernetes deployment showed low latency, with most delays due to service overhead rather …
Investigating The Effectiveness Of Traditional Vs Hybrid Time Series Models In Operational Planning., Cristina Priolo
Investigating The Effectiveness Of Traditional Vs Hybrid Time Series Models In Operational Planning., Cristina Priolo
ICT
This study conducts a systematic comparison of traditional and hybrid time series forecasting models for operational planning in a SaaS company, using large multichannel, multilanguage datasets aggregated at six-hour intervals. Classical models (ARIMA, SARIMA, ETS) are evaluated against hybrid models (ARIMA-ANN, SARIMA-ANN, ETS-ANN) to assess their ability to capture both linear and nonlinear patterns. Forecasts over a three-month horizon were evaluated using RMSE, MAE, and MAPE, with hyperparameter optimization applied to all models. Results show that hybrid models, particularly ARIMA-ANN and SARIMA-ANN, outperform traditional models in predicting volatile and high-volume data, while traditional models remain competitive for stable datasets. These …

Leveraging Epigenomics And Transcriptomics To Develop High-Dimensional Biomarkers Of Neuroinflammation, Steven C. Pike
Leveraging Epigenomics And Transcriptomics To Develop High-Dimensional Biomarkers Of Neuroinflammation, Steven C. Pike
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Neuroinflammation is a critical physiological phenomenon implicated in most neurological disorders, either as a cause or a consequence of pathology. Our understanding of neuroinflammation is limited by the inability to directly profile the cells of interest. Thus, developing biomarkers of neuroinflammation is clinically urgent as we know neuroinflammation correlates with patient outcomes and treatment success. The recent advances in “omics” technologies, particularly epigenomics and transcriptomics, provides the opportunity for high-dimensional profiling of biospecimens for potential biomarkers. Within this dissertation, I demonstrate that biomarkers obtained from “omics” platforms can detect neuroimmunological phenomena in clinical and preclinical settings. In chapter one, DNA …

Race Without Racism: Religious School Curricula And The Race-Neutral Legacy Of Brown, Vania Blaiklock
Race Without Racism: Religious School Curricula And The Race-Neutral Legacy Of Brown, Vania Blaiklock
Scholarly Articles
Current conversations about race and equity curricula in primary and secondary education exclude examining religious curricula because of their private classification. Yet, this omission prevents us from exploring how religious curricula might mirror the legal transformation of Brown’s racial equality legacy to constitutional race neutrality. This Article brings religious curricula into these conversations by specifically linking the Court’s race-neutral transformation of Brown to the way religious curricula frame discussions about race without racism. Throughout the Article, I argue that the Court’s transformation of Brown is not just a top-down legal framework but also a bottom-up educational ideology. By making …

Art As The Prosecutor’S Weapon: The Use Of Rap Lyrics Evidence At Trial, Thompson, Mikah K., Raheem, Sierra
Santa Clara Law Review
Are rap lyrics worthy of the same protections that other forms of creative expression enjoy, or is there something inherent to rap lyrics that renders them autobiographical, confessional, and reflective of the author’s true intentions and desires? This Article will attempt to answer that question. In doing so, the authors will take the reader on a voyage through a history that is not widely known among the attorneys, judges, expert witnesses, and jurors who are frequently called upon to interpret the art form known as Hip Hop.
This journey requires an exploration of our country’s history of chattel slavery, for …

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well known and common form of theory used to treat a variety of disorders. Our criminal justice system has tried and failed at rehabilitating offenders through a punishment-based approach. CBT opens the door to a treatment approach that actually reduces recidivism. Specifically, this research aims to look at the varying effects that CBT has on violent vs nonviolent offenders. Different types of CBT yield differing effects for violent and nonviolent offenders, with some benefitting one more than the other. Looking at the integrity of the CBT program is an important component to keep in mind …

Because of the Civil War, secession is a sore topic to many Americans. However, the idea of secession has not been confined to this notorious example. My essay focuses on the idea that Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia could be the basis for a unified autonomous or even independent entity called Cascadia. First, I discuss the history of secession as such, and the arguments that have been made pro and con as to its legality and under what situations. I then situate this within the histories of the United States and Canada and the phenomena of regionalism and independent movements. …

School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SW-PBIS) is a research-based approach that improves student engagement, behavior, and school culture, primarily in elementary schools, but is growing in secondary schools. Secondary teachers often resist SW-PBIS due to perceptions that it’s meant for younger students and the belief that high schoolers should already know socially appropriate behavior. One significant barrier to its implementation is the lack of time and space for effective teacher training at the secondary level (Estrapala et al., 2021; Swain-Bradway et al., 2015). Behavior skills training (BST), derived from applied behavior analysis, has proven effective in training educators to …
Recommendations For Diagnosis And Treatment Of Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea In Females Of Reproductive Age, Monica Foster
Recommendations For Diagnosis And Treatment Of Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea In Females Of Reproductive Age, Monica Foster
Capstone Showcase
Hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) accounts for approximately 30% of total cases of secondary amenorrhea in women of reproductive age. HA is defined as the absence of menses due to inadequate secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) by the hypothalamus leading to lack of secretion of gonadotropins from the anterior pituitary gland and steroid hormones from the ovaries. This feedback loop, called the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, regulates reproductive activity in animals and humans. When this system is disrupted in females due to a hormonal imbalance, menstrual abnormalities may emerge. Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) is defined as the absence of menses in which anatomic …

Beyond The Gas Tax: Evaluating Oregon’S Road Usage Charge (Orego) As A Model For Sustainable Infrastructure Funding, Gilles David Kwekam
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Fuel tax revenues are declining nationwide due to electric vehicle adoption, improved fuel efficiency, and long periods without rate adjustments. This erosion has created long-term instability in transportation funding, including in Oregon, where revenue no longer aligns with road use. Road usage charges (RUCs) offer a potential replacement by charging drivers per mile traveled rather than per gallon consumed. However, their success depends less on technology and more on how programs are designed and governed.
This capstone examines which design features make RUC programs effective, using Oregon’s OReGO program as the central case. A Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) comparing Oregon, …

Public University Gift Management Policies: Building A Best Practice Guide, Cristin Costello
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Currently, no consistent standards exist for how institutions of higher education should manage their non-endowed gift revenue. Good stewardship of gift funds is vital to ensuring the maintenance of donor relationships to create unions that bring further financial opportunities to universities for years to come. Public institutions, as recipients of government dollars, are especially vulnerable to the negative repercussions that could come with the scandal of misappropriated gift dollars. Overall cash donations to higher education have significantly increased in the past few decades as state appropriations fall short and the need to keep tuition rates stable increases. It is more …
