Self-Reported Prevalence Of Traumatic Brain Injury Among Law Enforcement Officers, Jennifer Lee Matheson Jan 2025

Self-Reported Prevalence Of Traumatic Brain Injury Among Law Enforcement Officers, Jennifer Lee Matheson

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Theses

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) have been extensively studied in sports, military, and criminal contexts, revealing significant prevalence rates and impacts on cognitive function, emotional regulation, and behavioral outcomes. However, the prevalence, patterns, and implications of TBI within law enforcement populations remain unexplored, presenting a gap in occupational health research. This gap is notable given that law enforcement officers face unique occupational hazards including physical confrontations, vehicle pursuits, and training-related exposures that may elevate their risk for neurological injury. While extensive research documents the impact of TBI on decision-making, executive function, and emotional processing, all critical competencies for effective policing, limited …

Utilitzing A Nurse Triage Model To Decrease The Administrative Burden Of Emr Messaging, Pamela B. Schneider

DNP Projects

Abstract

Background: The volume of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) messages from patients to providers continues to rise, yet clinic workflows have not been adequately restructured to accommodate. Increased EMR, especially the inbasket, is associated with provider burnout and decreased job satisfaction, contributing to provider turnover.

Purpose: To improve the triage and distribution of the EMR messaging workload

Method: A Nurse Triage Flowchart was implemented in the Gastroenterology Clinic at the University of Kentucky to help RNs/MAs triage patient messages for improved workflow. Surveys were completed by RNs/MAs and providers before and three months post-implementation. Data from EPIC over six …

“What We Say Matters”: Reducing Drug Use Stigmatization By Healthcare Professionals Through A Narrative-Based Awareness Campaign, Adam M. Traugott Jan 2025

“What We Say Matters”: Reducing Drug Use Stigmatization By Healthcare Professionals Through A Narrative-Based Awareness Campaign, Adam M. Traugott

DNP Projects

Background: Stigma towards substance use has been identified as a contributor to poor care and health outcomes amongst people who use drugs (PWUD), a vulnerable population. Healthcare worker stigma negatively affects the outcomes of individual patients and may have greater public health implications. Methods of addressing drug-use stigma have previously been implemented in a variety of clinical settings. Presenting the lived experience of PWUD to healthcare workers via emotionally compelling narratives has been found to be an effective means of stigma reduction.

Purpose: This study utilized two psychometrically validated tools to measure (1) the baseline prevalence of drug use stigma …

Guided by the CDC’s framework for program evaluation in public health, …

The Expressive Effects Of Bilateral Labor Agreements, Ian G. Peacock Jan 2025

The Expressive Effects Of Bilateral Labor Agreements, Ian G. Peacock

Chicago Journal of International Law

Bilateral labor agreements (BLAs) aim to facilitate the movement of temporary migrant workers between countries. So far, studies of BLAs have focused on whether they have effects on migration flows. Despite countries entering hundreds of BLAs, evidence for their effects on migration flows remains limited. Yet, even if BLAs have limited material effects, they may still have important symbolic effects. On this topic, this Comment highlights BLAs’ potential to change rhetoric about international migration among heads of state. Drawing on an original empirical analysis focused on BLAs with the Philippines, the Comment analyzes how BLAs may influence leaders’ expressed attitudes …

Chronically Online: Apportioning Liability In Social Media Litigation Based On User Engagement, Rebecca Vangelos Jan 2025

Chronically Online: Apportioning Liability In Social Media Litigation Based On User Engagement, Rebecca Vangelos

Fordham Law Review

The average American teenager spends nearly five hours on social media every day. This result is by design: social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok deploy persuasive technologies—including infinite scroll, personalized content recommendation feeds, and dark patterns—to capture and retain teen attention. These intentional design features exploit adolescent vulnerabilities to foster social media dependency. Accordingly, a growing body of scientific evidence links the extensive use of social media to the teen mental health crisis in the United States.

Despite these negative effects, social media companies have largely evaded accountability for the harm they have caused to teens. Recent lawsuits …

Vacuuming Outer Space: Incentivizing Active Space Debris Removal Through A Licensing Model, Alex S. Li

Buffalo Law Review

The increasing proliferation of space debris is jeopardizing satellites, space stations, and other ambitious activities in Earth’s orbits. This Article explores this growing concern and proposes an innovative licensing regime as a solution. It begins by surveying the space debris problem and examining the legal frameworks—both binding treaties and non-binding guidelines—that influence its management and mitigation. The paper then critically assesses several proposals advanced by legal scholars to bridge the gaps between these binding and non-binding measures, highlighting the issues these solutions face. In order to address these challenges, the Article advances a more collaborative and flexible approach: a licensing …

Immature (Data) Privacy, Yutang Hsiao Jan 2025

Immature (Data) Privacy, Yutang Hsiao

Buffalo Law Review

Sharenting, a combination of the words “sharing” and “parenting,” is a double-edged sword. It can cut both ways because even though it benefits parents by being a source of support and fostering community, it harms children in various significant and nuanced ways. While the world blames parents for sharing too much of their children’s data on social media, other actors also play a role and should share the blame. In this Article, I argue that the most fundamental question sharenting raises is in what ways children’s privacy is violated, and who commits the violation. Social media, as one of the …

Cross-Linked Polyrotaxane Based Aerogel As Supporter For Leakage-Proof Phase Change Materials With High Enthalpies, Hui Shi, Xiao-Mei Yang, Jun Mo, Huan Wang, Deming Tan, Guang-Zhong Yin

Artículos científicos

We developed a series of cross-linked polyrotaxane (C-PLR)-based aerogels using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) as a crosslinker. These aerogels were subsequently used as support materials for the encapsulation of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG), resulting in stable and leakage-proof PCM composites with high enthalpies. The pore morphology was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The excellent compatibility between the aerogels and PEG resulted in PCMs with outstanding anti-leakage properties. We characterized the phase change behavior of the material using a DSC, including phase change latent heat, supercooling, heat loss, and cycling stability. It is particularly noteworthy that these PCMs exhibited impressive cycle …

Artículos científicos

In order to make the transition from a linear to a circular economy, unprecedented measures are required from all social actors. Communication plays a fundamental role in this transition. The use of social marketing as an alternative to traditional communication models can promote the paradigm shift in order to increase communicative effectiveness. Understanding the perception of circular economy drivers is crucial for communication efforts aimed at persuading citizens to change their habits. To this end, this study analyzes drivers’ perceptions of communication processes aimed at environmental awareness and sensitization. Using grounded theory, a qualitative methodology, 44 interviews were conducted with …

Provider-Patient Alliance And Trauma Among Pregnant Patients With Opioid Use Disorder, Molly Doernberg

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The goal of this project was to compare the provider-patient relationship among pregnant patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) who did or did not have a history of moderate to severe trauma. The hypothesis was that patients with a trauma history would self-report worse relationships with their providers. This was an exploratory analysis of data from 169 patients enrolled in the Support Models for Addiction Related Treatment (SMART) trial. Trauma history, defined as probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), was determined by a score ≥31 on the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). The provider-patient relationship, collected at 26±4 weeks of pregnancy, …

Political Disinformation In The Anthropocene, Jeffrey Omari Jan 2025

Political Disinformation In The Anthropocene, Jeffrey Omari

Washington and Lee Law Review

The Anthropocene is the name that scientists have given to our current geological epoch, which references the overwhelming influence of human agency on the Earth and its ecological systems. Adopted as a theoretical tool across multiple academic disciplines, social scientists often employ the term to address deep-rooted political and socioeconomic problems and the symptoms of global inequalities and injustices. Meanwhile, legal scholars have employed the term to address the global environmental harms of human agency and to examine how normative frameworks must fundamentally change and adapt to the times ahead. At the same time, recent scholarship also notes that democracies …

The “Dire Plight” Contextualized: Comment On “The Fiction Of Equitable Distribution: Military Divorce, Disability, And The ‘Dire Plight’ Of The Former Military Spouse” By Zoe Speas, Catlin Meade

Washington and Lee Law Review

For forty years, military spouses have sacrificed their economic security and personal well-being to support their servicemember spouse’s military career, only to be thrust into a “dire plight” if their marriage ends in a community property state. The legislative policy that put them in this untenable position has not served federal interests: the military currently faces a recruiting crisis and military spouses’ economic security has not improved since the USFSPA. It is time for Congress and the DoD to reexamine the incentives and benefits provided to servicemembers and their families. Congress and the Court must end the USFSPA’s groundless, inequitable, …
