Breaking Down Barriers: A Literature Review Understanding Cervical Cancer Screening In Hispanic Women, Deni Peterson, Rina Badran, Farheen Vali, Lindsay Martin-Engle Dr.

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background/Purpose:

Hispanic women have one of the highest cervical cancer rates, with a 32% higher incidence than non-Hispanic white women1. This highlights a gap in critical preventive care within the Hispanic community. This review aims to explore these barriers Hispanic women face in accessing cervical cancer screenings and what can be done to address them.

Methods:

Barriers to cervical cancer screening in Hispanic women were identified through peer-reviewed articles from PubMed. Three independent researchers assessed journal eligibility based on publication date, relevance, and study quality. The search utilized the keywords “cervical cancer,” “screening,” “Hispanic women,” and “Latinas,” and was limited …

Disconnected Connections, Becket Nash

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

This long and arduous process began during the second week of classes when Dr. Rahman had us identify and describe an obstacle to the common good. I first thought about writing on wars and conflict, but later switched to something a little closer to home: relationships, namely how cell phones can impede our ability to form and maintain them. We were then tasked with writing a research proposal, an annotated bibliography, and a summary of peer-reviewed research. Through all of this, I looked over dozens of documents and articles learning all I could about cell phone addiction. I first created …

Beauty And The Beast (1991) And La Belle Et La Bête (1946): Contrasting Views Of Womanhood Across Varying Cultural Climates, Maddie R. Dietrichs

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

In my english honors course, we are placed into different fairy tale "groups. My group was assigned Beauty and the Beast as the fairy tale we would be offering social commentary on for this essay assignment. I knew I wanted to primarily discuss gender and women's roles in my essay since Beauty and the Beast offers a lot of interesting avenues on what a woman's role is, particularly in the romantic and familial spheres. I chose two different film retellings of Beauty and the Beast for this paper. The first being La Belle et La Bete, a 1946 black and …

Cuba's Reintegration Into The Inter-American System: The Treaty Of Tlatelolco, The Oas, And The End Of Latin America's Cold War, Isabella M. Stark

Madison Historical Review

This paper situates Cuba's reintegration into the inter-American system through its journey becoming a signatory to the Treaty of Tlatelolco -- the first nuclear weapons-free zone treaty designated to a populated region. The paper first analyzes and historicizes contested definitions of terms such as Latin Americanism vis à vis Pan-Americanism, the inter-American system, and different understandings of when the Cold War in Latin America closed. The paper then places the policies of revolutionary Cuba within the context of Castro's perception of the island as the vanguard of Latin Americanism. The paper concludes with how the collapse of the Soviet Union, …

“Expressions Of The Fury Of The Women”: How Andean Women Were Direct Participants In The Great Rebellion, Rina Rossi Apr 2025

“Expressions Of The Fury Of The Women”: How Andean Women Were Direct Participants In The Great Rebellion, Rina Rossi

Madison Historical Review

This article confronts a longstanding issue in the historiography of colonial Latin America, examining the role that subaltern actors—specifically, Indigenous, non-elite women—played in revolutions. This essay demonstrates that women directly participated in both combative and non-combative roles in both the Catari and Tuparista factions of the Andean’s Great Rebellion, as well as in the Comunero Revolution. In particular, the article discusses how these women resolutely fought in and commanded armies, provided the insurgent army with funding, and took on administrative tasks. Specifically, women revolutionaries such as Micaela Bastidas, Tomasa Titu Condemayta, Bartolina Sisa, Gregoria Apaza, and Marcela Castro led the …

Fighting On The American Color Line: How Black Masculinity And Identity Was Negotiated Through Boxing In The Jim Crow Era, Cameron Reid Ambroise-Sanscartier

Madison Historical Review

The early 20th century saw the meteoric rise of boxing as a lucrative business opportunity for both promoters and fighters alike and acted as one of the few business ventures that was accessible for both White and Black Americans. In the Reconstruction period, many former slaves or children of slaves found themselves stuck in a perpetual cycle of poverty performing menial labour not far removed from their previous lives as slaves; boxing provided a rare alternative for these men. Often dubbed “meal ticket fighters” some men fought merely to survive while others stood out as exceptions within this violent and …

Switching Extended-Reality Objects From World-Anchored To Body-Locked Reference Frames Using Hand Gestures, Na Apr 2025

Switching Extended-Reality Objects From World-Anchored To Body-Locked Reference Frames Using Hand Gestures, Na

Defensive Publications Series

Switching objects in extended reality (XR) environments from world-anchored to body-locked reference frames can be a cumbersome procedure, requiring complex interactions or menu navigation that interrupt immersion. This disclosure describes techniques that use quick hand gestures to seamlessly transition between world-anchored and body-locked reference frames in XR environments. The hand gestures, designed to be intuitive, easy to perform, and minimally disruptive to the immersive experience, can be performed in the frame of XR headset view for easy detection and action. An example gesture can be the user extending the index finger of their dominant hand and retracting it rapidly twice, …

Taraxacum Officinale Effect On The Reduction Of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines Il-6 And Tnf-A, Bailee Bad Heart Bull, Kat Kraemer, Kira Mccallum, Ruth Teeple

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2025

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a ubiquitous plant found in every continent except Antarctica. Despite its condemnation as a weed, it has been used for centuries in traditional European, Indian, and Chinese herbal medicine for its purported digestive and diuretic properties. Its leaves contain antioxidants and bioactive compounds like taraxasterol, which have been reported to reduce reactive oxygen species production and inhibit nitric oxide production. There have been claims that taraxasterol can reduce inflammation by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines; a cytokine is a small protein released by immune cells that helps regulate inflammation, immune responses, and cell communication. Our …

Effective Mathematics Instruction In High-Poverty Middle Schools: What Are The "Best" Teachers Doing?, Tye G. Campbell, Jordan Green

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

While there is much literature devoted to mathematics teaching practices, most research does not consider the perspectives of effective teachers in high-poverty schools. This study offers unprecedented access into the teaching practices of the most effective middle school teachers who teach in high-poverty schools. By accessing a state-wide database of thousands of teachers in Utah (USA), we identified middle school teachers whose students consistently showed high growth on standardized assessments compared to other teachers in Utah and taught in high-poverty schools. Our analysis identified seven teachers. We invited these teachers to participate in interviews regarding their teaching practices, and all …

The Effectiveness Of Turn Teams In Reducing The Incidence Of Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries, Abigaile Blackburn Apr 2025

The Effectiveness Of Turn Teams In Reducing The Incidence Of Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries, Abigaile Blackburn

2025 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations

It is commonly known in healthcare that pressure injuries (PIs) result in higher morbidity and mortality rates for the adult population. PIs include a range of intact, open, and deep tissue injuries related to prolonged immobility. To reduce the incidence of PIs, it is highly recommended to turn patients, usually alternating among the left side, the back, and the right side. Additionally, it is standard across most hospitals to enforce mandatory turning schedules, which is at least every two hours. The objective of the project is to investigate the effectiveness of using turn teams in hospitals and nursing homes. The …
