Exploring The Impact Of Relational And Geographic Search On Firm Innovation, Manish K. Srivastava Apr 2025

Exploring The Impact Of Relational And Geographic Search On Firm Innovation, Manish K. Srivastava

Michigan Tech Publications

This paper explores the interplay between geographic and relational search behaviors and their impact on innovation generation within firms. Extending previous research, our study explores the dual influences of geographic proximity and relational dynamics on both the quantity and quality of innovations. We develop a conceptual framework to examine the combined effects of these factors, identifying four distinct types of firm knowledge search behaviors and analyzing their repercussions on innovation outcomes. The study highlights the necessity for managers to adopt a balanced approach in strategic knowledge search. By acknowledging the trade-offs between different search strategies, managers can more effectively navigate …

Inclusive Science Education: High School Biology Educator’S Voice, Experiences, Attitudes, And Challenges Instructing Students With Extensive Support Needs, Jessica Nichole Minton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Students with extensive support needs are moving into inclusive general education science classrooms in higher concentrations. Teachers’ commitment to their students and their attitudes towards their students can influence student success in the classroom and educator experiences or challenges can influence attitudes (Bhatnagar & Das, 2014; Carter & Hughes, 2006; Gonzalez, Henneman, & Schluter, 2019). In this CDT narrative inquiry study, I examined high school biology teachers’ narratives to address the following research questions: (1) What do the narratives of high school inclusive biology teachers reveal about their attitudes regarding the inclusion of students with extensive support needs in the …

Faith In Action: An Evaluation Of An Hiv Stigma Reduction Scale Used In Faith-Based Communities, Andrea Williams Stubbs Apr 2025

Faith In Action: An Evaluation Of An Hiv Stigma Reduction Scale Used In Faith-Based Communities, Andrea Williams Stubbs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

HIV-related stigma remains a substantial barrier to enhancing access to prevention, testing, and treatment, thereby perpetuating health disparities. Faith-based organizations, which serve as integral components of many Southern communities, possess the capacity to function as influential platforms for addressing this stigma and are pivotal allies in the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) initiative. These environments, encompassing churches and health clinics, have the potential to cultivate supportive atmospheres for individuals living with HIV (PLWH) and to contribute to stigma reduction initiatives actively. A significant challenge in these efforts lies in the pressing need for more effective measurement tools to assess HIV-related …

Student Publications

Lipid dysregulation within sebaceous glands is a critical factor underlying the pathogenesis of sebaceous gland disorders, particularly acne vulgaris. Sebaceous glands synthesize and secrete a complex mixture of lipids, including triglycerides, wax esters, free fatty acids, and sphingolipids, which contribute to skin barrier function and microbial homeostasis. Dysregulated lipid production, characterized by increased sebum secretion and altered lipid composition, has been implicated in promoting Cutibacterium acnes proliferation, hyperkeratinization, and inflammation, key processes in acne pathogenesis. Recent research highlights the pivotal role of sphingolipid metabolism, particularly ceramides, in modulating sebaceous gland activity and skin inflammation. Ceramide deficiencies in acne-prone skin contribute …

Cmsi Translations #17: Analysis Of Problems With Warship Damage Control Plans And Methods For Preparing Damage Control Plans, Jian Huajun, Zhu Haishi

CMSI Translations

“Damage control” (sunhai kongzhi, or just sunguan) refers to measures and actions taken by a warship for the prevention, control, and elimination of damage in order to maintain or recover its vitality (shengmingli). If a warship suffers an accident, this could result in major casualties among the crew and cause damage to the ship’s equipment; it might also impact the ship’s vitality. The crew’s normal level of damage control training determines the success or failure of damage control. In order to fully leverage the active role of crew members in damage control and fully leverage the effectiveness of damage control, …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation provides a comprehensive exploration of the phenomenon of belonging specifically tailored to students with historically minoritized identities (HMIs) within the Washington University Program in Occupational Therapy (WUOT). Employing qualitative methodologies including scoping reviews, theoretical conceptualizations, focus groups, individual interviews, surveys, and participant video diaries, the study delves into the multifaceted nature of belonging within the context of occupational therapy (OT) education. The dissertation is organized into four key articles. The first two articles lay the theoretical foundation by examining the historical context of education as forced assimilation for minority groups and the nuanced use of professional behaviors to …

Senescent Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Mediate Immunosuppression And Promote Breast Cancer Progression, Jiayu Ye Apr 2025

Senescent Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Mediate Immunosuppression And Promote Breast Cancer Progression, Jiayu Ye

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women worldwide, and aging is the largest risk factor for breast cancer development. The process of aging is typically accompanied by a progressive accumulation of senescent cells, which are characterized by a series of markers such as p16INKA4 (p16) positivity and a distinctive profile of secretory factors including mitogens, cytokines, and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins that are collectively recognized as senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Numerous data so far have shown that senescent stromal cells play critical roles in modulating tumor microenvironment and progression. For example, senescent fibroblasts induced in vitro could …

‘Somebody Did Something’: Pell-Eligible Community College Student Perceptions Of Financial Aid, Sarah V. Diehl, Mia Ocean Apr 2025

‘Somebody Did Something’: Pell-Eligible Community College Student Perceptions Of Financial Aid, Sarah V. Diehl, Mia Ocean

Journal of Student Financial Aid

With tuition increasing at a faster rate than inflation, many college students depend on financial aid to access education. The largest form of federal aid is the Pell Grant, which subsidizes over 30 billion a year worth of tuition for eligible students. While the ED is not required by Congress to measure success outcomes for Pell recipients, quantitative research has produced mixed results. Researchers have explored what causes Pell-eligible students to fail or persist, but the reasons can be varied and intersectional. However, little research exists on the student perspectives of financial aid, apart from their financial literacy or their …

Vocal And Articulatory Speech Control Deficits In Individuals With Post-Stroke Aphasia, Roozbeh Behroozmand, Zeinab Khoshhal Mollasaraei, Vahid Nejati, Ayoub Daliri, Julius Fridriksson Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

Individuals with post-stroke aphasia exhibit deficits in regulating vocal (i.e., laryngeal) pitch control during speech vowel production; however, it is not determined whether such deficits also exist when they control their supra-laryngeal speech articulators during word production. To address this question, 19 subjects with post-stroke aphasia and 20 controls were tested under an altered auditory feedback paradigm in which they received + 30% shifts in their vowel first-formant frequency during word production. In addition, 17 aphasia subjects and 19 controls from the same groups also completed steady vowel vocalizations while receiving randomized pitch shifts at ± 100 cents. Consistent with …

Historicizing The Prison In The History Of Capitalism, James Parisot Apr 2025

Historicizing The Prison In The History Of Capitalism, James Parisot

Sociology Faculty Publications

The goal of this paper is to rethink the timeline through which scholars have conceived of the history of capitalism and imprisonment. Scholars including Oliver C. Cox, Fernand Braudel, and Giovanni Arrighi, among others, have presented a story of capitalism centered around the Italian-city states, followed by the Netherlands, Britain, and the United States. Yet discussions on the origins of capitalism and imprisonment, eventually resulting in the invention of the penitentiary as an institution of reform, usually start around the sixteenth century. Incorporating insights from both of these angles, this paper shows the historical ways that different centers of capitalist …

High-density probes allow electrophysiological recordings from many neurons simultaneously across entire brain circuits but fail to reveal cell type. Here, we develop a strategy to identify cell types from extracellular recordings in awake animals and reveal the computational roles of neurons with distinct functional, molecular, and anatomical properties. We combine optogenetics and pharmacology using the cerebellum as a testbed to generate a curated ground-truth library of electrophysiological properties for Purkinje cells, molecular layer interneurons, Golgi cells, and mossy fibers. We train a semi-supervised deep learning classifier that predicts cell types with greater than 95% accuracy based on the waveform, discharge …

The practise of dentistry is linked to high levels of self-reported stress, burnout and psychological distress. Different dental systems operate across the four United Kingdom (UK) countries and there is currently a lack of exploration of the impacts these different systems have on the stressors and challenges dental teams experience.Aim The aim of this paper is to explore and provide a UK country comparison of dental team members' experiences and stressors reported through the MINDSET U.K. survey 2023.Method Qualitative data were collected in an online questionnaire which …

Asynchronous Development Of The Mouse Auditory Cortex Is Driven By Hemispheric Identity And Sex, Ashlan P Reid, Demetrios Neophytou, Robert Levy, Cody Pham, Hysell V Oviedo Apr 2025

Asynchronous Development Of The Mouse Auditory Cortex Is Driven By Hemispheric Identity And Sex, Ashlan P Reid, Demetrios Neophytou, Robert Levy, Cody Pham, Hysell V Oviedo

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Lateralized auditory processing is essential for specialized functions such as speech processing, typically dominated by the Left Auditory Cortex (ACx) in humans. Hemispheric specializations also occur in the adult mouse ACx, but their developmental origins are unclear. Our study finds that the Left and Right ACx in mice reach developmental milestones at different ages. Thalamocortical responses and maturation of synaptic dynamics develop earlier in the Right ACx than the Left. We show that this timing offset predicts hemisphere-dependent differences in sensory-driven plasticity. Juvenile tone exposure at specific times results in imbalanced adult tone frequency representations in the Right and Left …

The Essential Calcium Channel Of Sperm Catsper Is Temperature-Gated, Dilip K Swain, Citlalli Vergara, Júlia Castro-Arnau, Polina V Lishko Apr 2025

The Essential Calcium Channel Of Sperm Catsper Is Temperature-Gated, Dilip K Swain, Citlalli Vergara, Júlia Castro-Arnau, Polina V Lishko

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The flagellar calcium channel CatSper is essential for male fertility, as it regulates calcium influx to trigger the hyperactive motility required for sperm to fertilize the egg. Precise activation of CatSper is critical, as premature activation can impair sperm function. While optimal temperature is known to influence fertilization, its effect on CatSper remains unknown. By directly recording from mouse spermatozoa, we reveal that CatSper functions as a temperature-gated ion channel, with a thermal threshold of 33.5 °C and a temperature coefficient Q

Scientific Authorial Voice: Incorporating Explicit Instruction In Undergraduate Chemistry Courses, Emma Becker Apr 2025

Scientific Authorial Voice: Incorporating Explicit Instruction In Undergraduate Chemistry Courses, Emma Becker

Liberty University Research Week

The effective development of undergraduate chemistry students for success in professional and academic careers involves emphases on content knowledge and on writing and authorial voice. Unfortunately, most undergraduate chemistry instruction wholly neglects writing and authorial voice instruction in favor of content knowledge instruction. This results in the development of chemistry students who know the content of their field but not how to communicate that knowledge or how to enter the chemistry discourse with their own research. This integrative review identified 71 pieces of scholarly literature and synthesized these sources to reconceptualize writing instruction in undergraduate chemistry and propose explicit instruction …

Memories Of The Lost War Memoir: Genre Subversion, Pilgrimage, And Reflections On Memoir In Tobias Wolff And Tim O’Brien, Peter Rogati

Liberty University Research Week

When a flood of literature creates a new genre, as in the 90s with personal accounts of the American War in Vietnam, the question of value demands attention. Value partially materializes from the cultural and literary context of a narrative, and the nineties brought a post-modern landscape littered with self-indulgent celebrity memoirs. Many scholars point to Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried as the most well-renowned and best-received piece of literature emergent out of Vietnam. Marlyin Wesley describes O’Brien’s metafiction as valuable because of its subversion of the American War Novel. Edward Linenthal pinpoints the confessional mode as a prime …

The Effects Of Stress On Injury And Sickness Rates Of Middle-Distance And Distance D3 Athletes, Hailey D. Smith Ms.

Student Scholar Showcase

A runner intentionally stresses their body to experience an adaptation, however, issues occur when the body does not have time to recover. Male athletes (n = 14) on the University of Lynchburg’s distance and middle-distance team participated in this study. For 6 weeks, heart rate variability (HRV4training app), resting heart rate, perceived stress, and cortisol levels were assessed as indicators of recovery and stress. It was anticipated that indicators of physical stress such as higher resting heart rates and higher cortisol levels, would correspond with greater perceived stress and higher occurrence of injury and sickness. Cortisol (n = 2, p …

An Integrative Approach To The Existential Problem Of Evil In A Post-Pandemic World, Jacob Byrd

Liberty University Research Week

Only a few years have passed since the world experienced a unique manifestation of suffering brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. The problem of evil and suffering has always been a difficult topic to address for Christian pastors and theologians who have now been left to address this problem in the wake of the pandemic. In addition to the suffering from millions of lives being lost, studies have shown a correlation between the pandemic and a significant increase in mental illness in the United States. This is one data point among many instances that add to the uniqueness of the …

Conceptions Of Ghosts In Renaissance England, Elizabeth Jaques Apr 2025

Conceptions Of Ghosts In Renaissance England, Elizabeth Jaques

Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day

Literature, treatises, and theatrical plays disclose information about the cultural concept of ghosts in Renaissance England. Shakespeare’s Hamlet provides an exemplary examination of the attributes given to ghosts. Hamlet conveys the following characteristics: ghosts can communicate, appear at night, have the form of the deceased, appear to a person known in life, died in violent manners, and were labelled as “ghosts.” Other plays, treatises, and other similar documents from the period share these characteristics, reflecting broader societal belief. By examining these sources, deeper insight can be gained into the beliefs and attitudes of people from Renaissance England regarding ghosts. Furthermore, …

A Crown In Death: A Dramaturgical Approach To The Trojan Women Of Euripides, Stephanie Lester Apr 2025

A Crown In Death: A Dramaturgical Approach To The Trojan Women Of Euripides, Stephanie Lester

Liberty University Research Week

In the action-packed, visually-oriented market for modern media, some may assume a 2,400-year-old classical play to be slightly past its expiration date, especially if that play features little to no action on stage like in Euripides’ The Trojan Women. However, it is important to remember that literature is lost when the world fails to cherish it, so if a text survives that long, it may be worth another cursory glance. In this case, that glance involved a full dramaturgical study featuring qualitative script analysis of multiple translations of The Trojan Women with related texts to explore context, themes, common literary …

Shaping Wartime Illinois: Dwight H. Green’S Re-Election Campaign Of 1944, Cole Klicker

Liberty University Research Week

The 1944 Illinois gubernatorial election was a pivotal moment in the state’s political history, taking place amidst the broader context of World War II. Despite Illinois voters supporting Franklin D. Roosevelt’s fourth presidential term and electing a Democratic senator, they diverged at the state level by re-electing Republican Governor Dwight H. Green. This raises the central research question: What factors contributed to Dwight H. Green’s successful re-election campaign in 1944, and how did his political strategies, governance, and alignment with 1940s Republican values shape the outcome of the election? This study explores Green’s ability to navigate the complex political environment …

Bytes, Banter, And The Bible: An Interdisciplinary Account Of Objective Meaning, Cameron Bonin Apr 2025

Bytes, Banter, And The Bible: An Interdisciplinary Account Of Objective Meaning, Cameron Bonin

Liberty University Research Week

The claim that the Bible has objective meaning is contested in a postmodern world. Many theologians and philosophers have sought to address this critique. One such philosopher is Nicholas Wolterstorff, who makes use of speech-act theory to defend authorial-discourse interpretation. His case is especially presented in his work, Divine Discourse: Philosophical Reflections on the Claim that God Speaks. But theologians and philosophers are not the only ones concerned with the nature of meaning. As such, the assertion that the biblical texts have objective meaning can be more persuasively defended when it is addressed by insights from multiple disciplines. In particular, …

Exploring Internal Communication At United States Higher Education Institutions, Kimberly S. Marks Apr 2025

Exploring Internal Communication At United States Higher Education Institutions, Kimberly S. Marks

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

Communication serves a crucial role in higher education institutions (Pineda et al., 2024) which can aid organizational performance when effective (Meirinhos et al., 2022). Change can also achieve necessary support through internal communication (Lemon & Towry, 2021) and higher education institutions are currently being challenged and require change (Abushawish, 2018). Although scholars (Johnstone & Schexnider, 2023; McClure, 2017; Moran, 2016) have named many sustainability strategies, Burukina (2021) indicates that internal communication plays a central role in higher education’s sustainability efforts. However, internal communication studies within higher education institutions remain limited (Burukina, 2021; Campbell, 2018; Clemmons, 2022). The purpose of this …
