Code refinement aims to enhance existing code by addressing issues, refactoring, and optimizing to improve quality and meet specific requirements. As software projects scale in size and complexity, the traditional iterative exchange between reviewers and developers becomes increasingly burdensome. While recent deep learning techniques have been explored to accelerate this process, their performance remains limited, primarily due to challenges in accurately understanding reviewers’ intents. This paper proposes an intention-based code refinement technique that enhances the conventional comment-to-code process by explicitly extracting reviewer intentions from the comments. Our approach consists of two key phases: Intention Extraction and Intention Guided Revision Generation. …

Mobile accessibility is increasingly important nowadays as it enables people with disabilities to use mobile applications to perform daily tasks. Ensuring mobile accessibility not only benefits those with disabilities but also enhances the user experience for all users, making applications more intuitive and user-friendly. Although numerous tools are available for testing and detecting accessibility issues in Android applications, a large number of false negatives and false positives persist due to limitations in the existing approaches, i.e., low coverage of UI scenarios and lack of consideration of runtime context. To address these problems, in this paper, we propose a scenario-driven exploration …

Accountable anonymous credentials protect user privacy while holding the accountability of ill-intentioned individuals, which is a critical feature for applications such as online payments and other financial services. Existing accountable anonymous credentials rely on a public committee of trustworthy members who are assumed not to collude and are well protected to perform privacy revocation. However, this assumption is unsound in blockchain-based cryptocurrency systems because the selected committees may involve nodes with significant stakes, and public nodes serving as committee members are vulnerable against targeted attacks from high-computing power adversaries. In this paper, we propose an improved accountable anonymous credential called …

Empathetic Response Generation (ERG) is one of the key tasks of the affective computing area, which aims to produce emotionally nuanced and compassionate responses to user's queries. However, existing ERG research is predominantly confined to the singleton text modality, limiting its effectiveness since human emotions are inherently conveyed through multiple modalities. To combat this, we introduce an avatar-based Multimodal ERG (MERG) task, entailing rich text, speech, and facial vision information. We first present a large-scale high-quality benchmark dataset, AvaMERG, which extends traditional text ERG by incorporating authentic human speech audio and dynamic talking-face avatar videos, encompassing a diverse range of …

Infrastructuring Planetary Rural Geographies: A View From China’S Rural Construction Movement, Ningning Chen, Lily Kong, Yurui Li
Infrastructuring Planetary Rural Geographies: A View From China’S Rural Construction Movement, Ningning Chen, Lily Kong, Yurui Li
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This commentary responds to Wang et al.'s (2023) call for planetary rural geographies by attending to the neglected infrastructural dimensions. In so doing, we show how China's rural construction movement demonstrates Wang et al.'s (2023) three geographies of planetary rurality: as spaces of crisis, conflict, and hope. Simultaneously, we address how planetary rural thinking can foreground infrastructural geographies and their destabilization of urban-centered discourses, leading to a reconsideration of rural–urban relationality. We then identify new insights that critical infrastructural studies offer to planetary rural geographies. This includes an emphasis on the material grounds, hidden politics, and non-linear temporal patterns of …
Proving The Matrix: On The Admissibility And Use Of Prior Negotiation Evidence As An Aid To Contractual Interpretation, Daniele Bertolini
Proving The Matrix: On The Admissibility And Use Of Prior Negotiation Evidence As An Aid To Contractual Interpretation, Daniele Bertolini
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article examines the relevance and admissibility of prior negotiation evidence in contract interpretation. According to a long-established common law rule (“exclusionary rule”), the evidence of pre-contract negotiations is not admissible as an aid to contract interpretation. This study argues that the exclusionary rule is unjustified and should be abandoned. Judges should be allowed to use prior negotiation evidence to support inferences about the existence of the empirical facts constituting the relevant factual matrix, while the use of such evidence should not be allowed to support interpretive inferences about the meaning of the contract language. The distinction between empirical and …

Not Right Now: Factors Affecting Interruption Decisions In A Healthcare Paradigm, Matthew G. Pacailler
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Interruptions are common in the workplace, but when they happen during high-stakes critical tasks, they can have serious consequences. In the field of healthcare, interruptions can lead to serious adverse events or medication errors. Research on interruption management strategies addresses the potentially harmful outcomes of interruptions but often fails to account for the initial decision to accept or reject the interrupting task. Two experiments were performed to examine the decision-making outcomes for interruptions.
In experiment I, the participants monitored two EKG displays while simultaneously entering medication information into a patient chart. The decision to accept or reject an interruption was …

Glutamate Gating Of Ampa-Subtype Iglurs At Physiological Temperatures, Anish Kumar Mondal, Elisa Carrillo, Vasanthi Jayaraman, Edward C Twomey
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) are tetrameric ligand-gated ion channels that mediate most excitatory neurotransmission1. iGluRs are gated by glutamate, where on glutamate binding, they open their ion channels to enable cation influx into postsynaptic neurons, initiating signal transduction1,2. The structural mechanics of how glutamate gating occurs in full-length iGluRs is not well understood. Here, using the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid subtype iGluR (AMPAR), we identify the glutamate-gating mechanism. AMPAR activation by glutamate is augmented at physiological temperatures. By preparing AMPARs for cryogenic-electron microscopy at these temperatures, we captured the glutamate-gating mechanism. Activation by glutamate initiates ion channel opening that involves all ion …

Elevated P16ink4a Expression Enhances Tau Phosphorylation In Neurons Differentiated From Human-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, Kristopher Holloway, Kashfia Neherin, Yingduo Song, Kazuhito Sato, Andrew Houston, Feng Chen, Li Ding, Hong Zhang
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Increased expression of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p16Ink4a (p16) is detected in neurons of human Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains and during normal aging. Importantly, selective eliminating p16-expressing cells in AD mouse models attenuates tau pathologies and improves cognition. But whether and how p16 contributes to AD pathogenesis remains unclear. To address this question, we tested whether induction of p16 expression in neurons exacerbates AD pathologies. We created a doxycycline-inducible system to trigger p16 up-regulation in human-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and neurons differentiated from iPSCs. We demonstrated that up-regulated p16 expression in iPSCs reduces cell proliferation, down-regulates cell cycle genes, …

Robust Distributed Learning Against Both Distributional Shifts And Byzantine Attacks, Guanqiang Zhou, Ping Xu, Yue Wang, Zhi Tian
Robust Distributed Learning Against Both Distributional Shifts And Byzantine Attacks, Guanqiang Zhou, Ping Xu, Yue Wang, Zhi Tian
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In distributed learning systems, robustness threat may arise from two major sources. On the one hand, due to distributional shifts between training data and test data, the trained model could exhibit poor out-of-sample performance. On the other hand, a portion of working nodes might be subject to Byzantine attacks, which could invalidate the learning result. In this article, we propose a new research direction that jointly considers distributional shifts and Byzantine attacks. We illuminate the major challenges in addressing these two issues simultaneously. Accordingly, we design a new algorithm that equips distributed learning with both distributional robustness and Byzantine robustness. …

Advanced Day-Ahead Scheduling Of Hvac Demand Response Control Using Novel Strategy Of Q-Learning, Model Predictive Control, And Input Convex Neural Networks, Rahman Heidarykiany, Cristinel Ababei
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, we present a Q-Learning optimization algorithm for smart home HVAC systems. The proposed algorithm combines new convex deep neural network models with model predictive control (MPC) techniques. More specifically, new input convex long short-term memory (ICLSTM) models are employed to predict dynamic states in an MPC optimal control technique integrated within a Q-Learning reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm to further improve the learned temporal behaviors of nonlinear HVAC systems. As a novel RL approach, the proposed algorithm generates day-ahead HVAC demand response (DR) signals in smart homes that optimally reduce and/or shift peak energy usage, reduce electricity costs, …

Micro-grids function to connect to power system power produced by the renewable energy resources. In islanded micro-grids, grid-forming units collaborate to maintain the micro-grids voltage and frequency by utilizing droop control technique that includes primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Secondary control intervenes to improve power sharing and restore voltage and frequency to their nominal levels. However, the conventional droop control applied to a grid with mismatched line parameters experiences a trade-off between reactive power sharing and voltage regulations. This paper applies real-time trajectory tracking convex optimization to ensure by communicating power sharing between units in a consensus topology. The optimization …

As the threat of cyber attacks increases, the cyber security sector continues to train professionals as one form of mitigation. Gamification and infrastructure like cyber ranges have been proven useful in training cyber security specialists to detect and react to cyber-attacks in information technology. However, a subset of all digital threats target cyber-physical systems, not just information systems, and these threats have been growing rapidly in recent years. While those threats are increasing, training specific to cyber-physical threats is not growing as quickly as information technology training solutions. While cyber ranges are useful for training and supporting events like cyber …

In 2010, the EU Kids Online project, and aligned AU Kids Online study, interviewed one parent and one child (9–16) from 25,542 families across 26 countries. Information gathered included parents’ awareness of their child’s experiences of sexual content online. This dataset has since been updated by recent ethnographic work in Australia and Ireland, capturing parents’ approaches to managing their children’s (11–17) digital engagement with sexual content. Parents identified risks and benefits in their children’s encounters with adult content online. This article concludes that parents do not judge the efficacy of their digital parenting around preventing their child from seeing restricted …
