Volatility Spillover From Largest Muslim Countries: Determinant From Palestine-Israel War, M. Fathur Rahman
Volatility Spillover From Largest Muslim Countries: Determinant From Palestine-Israel War, M. Fathur Rahman
International Journal of Islamic Economics and Business Sustainability
Background: This study investigates how sentiment related to the Palestine–Israel conflict influences volatility spillovers among selected Islamic equity markets. Methods – Weekly data on Islamic stock indices from seven major Muslim-majority countries (Indonesia, Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Turkey) are collected for the period 2013W1 through 2025W21. Geopolitical risk sentiment regarding the Palestine–Israel conflict is proxied by BlackRock’s conflict sentiment indicator. Volatility spillovers are measured via a Time-Varying Parameter VAR (TVP-VAR) joint connectedness framework. An Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach is then employed to assess the short-run and long-run impact of conflict sentiment (and energy price controls) on the TCI …

Popular Originalism, Thomas G. Donnelly
Popular Originalism, Thomas G. Donnelly
BYU Law Review
Scholars are obsessed with the Roberts Court’s recent turn to history and tradition. But another source of authority has also emerged as an important feature of the Roberts Court’s approach to constitutional cases. In previous work, I have referred to this source of authority as popular meaning. While original meaning identifies the best reading of the Constitution’s text at the time of its ratification, popular meaning draws on sources of authority outside the courts to capture the constitutional views of the American people today. In this Article, I demonstrate how interpreters might draw on the Constitution’s popular meaning to help …
Regulatory Influence In The Financial Markets Revisited, Jessica E. Lees
Regulatory Influence In The Financial Markets Revisited, Jessica E. Lees
BYU Law Review
Historically, the financial markets of the United States and their corresponding regulatory scheme wielded unique influence throughout the globe. But this influence is waning, due largely to the centralization of financial services rulemaking within the European Union and the growth of global emerging markets. It is thus an important time to consider the circumstances under which a jurisdiction may assume and exercise the global regulatory influence traditionally wielded by the U.S. regime.
This Article develops a new framework to specifically address regulatory influence within global financial regulation and financial markets more broadly, looking beyond market size to establish a more …

Them’S Fightin’ Words—Maybe: Testing The Application And Boundaries Of The “Fighting Words” Doctrine Using A Randomized Survey Experiment, Erin Cranor, Dane Thorley
BYU Law Review
Advanced note to readers: The survey experiment in this Article depicts acts of verbal violence, including the use of raceand gender-based epithets. Some of the relevant caselaw also includes offensive or harmful language.
As one of only a handful of exceptions to the First Amendment’s bar on laws proscribing speech, “fighting words” are defined as “those personally abusive epithets which, when addressed to the ordinary citizen, are, as a matter of common knowledge, inherently likely to provoke violent reaction.”1 It is unclear, however, how this relatively old doctrine applies to contemporary speech. Additionally, the standard is itself potentially problematic in …

Mathematics Teachers' Perspectives On Computational Thinking: Insights Into Knowledge, Strategies, And Challenges, Hasan Djidu, Heri Retnawati, Haryanto Haryanto
The Qualitative Report
In this study we explored how mathematics teachers in Indonesia understood and implemented Computational Thinking Skills (CTS), as well as the challenges they encountered. While CTS—encompassing skills such as decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking—had gained prominence in global education reform, its classroom-level integration remains uneven, especially in diverse school settings. Through semi-structured interviews with 11 mathematics teachers from primary and secondary schools across varied regions in Indonesia, including underserved and remote areas, we examined how CTS was conceptualized, practiced, and hindered in real-world teaching. Our thematic analysis revealed three key findings: (a) teachers demonstrated uneven familiarity with CTS, …

Developing A Computational Pipeline For Microstructure-Based Modelling With Exaca And Evpfft, Lizzy Beall, Eric Collins, Jacob Moore
Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science
The microstructure of a metal determines its properties and by understanding the grains that make up that structure, we can predict the behavior of that material. However, it can be difficult and costly to view the microstructure of a metal, especially since the microstructure is highly dependent on the manufacturing history of the part. By computer generating the microstructure of a material, we can better understand its properties. Exascale Cellular Automata (ExaCA) can generate a microstructure for a metal sample given its thermal history and Elasto-Visco Plastic Fast Fourier Transforms (EVPFFT) can model the response of the crystals in a …
Challenging Behavior In The Early Childhood Classroom, Ashley L. Hoag
Challenging Behavior In The Early Childhood Classroom, Ashley L. Hoag
Masters Projects
In early childhood classrooms, it is becoming increasingly common for students to exhibit challenging behaviors. These behaviors present as either internalizing behaviors, such as anxiety, or as externalizing behaviors, such as defiance and aggression. These behaviors are impacting student learning and contributing to an increase in teacher stress and burnout. Early childhood educators feel underprepared to address these behaviors effectively. The project is grounded in Behaviorist Theory and Constructivist Theory. These theories inform Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), which is an evidence-based approach to managing challenging behaviors by focusing on reinforcement, the structure of the environment, and building important …

Examining The Relationship Between Discriminated Medical Care And Telehealth Use In The United States, Jennifer E. Akpo, Samuel Opoku, Bettye A. Apenteng, William A. Mase
Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications
Introduction: Discrimination in healthcare can lead to reduced trust in the system and reluctance to seek care. Telehealth and other digital health technologies may have the potential to reduce inequality and bias within the healthcare system since the virtual space may minimize the implicit social and cultural biases that can influence face-to-face interactions in the traditional in-person healthcare delivery settings. However, amidst a growing body of literature on how different racial and ethnic groups use telehealth services, the extent to which discrimination in medical care drives the use of telehealth in the United States has remained largely uncharacterized. We aimed …
Identification Of Crustose Coralline Algae Species In Florida And Their Ability To Induce Larval Settlement Of Caribbean Corals, Danielle Macias
Identification Of Crustose Coralline Algae Species In Florida And Their Ability To Induce Larval Settlement Of Caribbean Corals, Danielle Macias
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are a diverse, globally spread and yet poorly studied group of benthic organisms. They act as settlement cues for coral larvae, but this interaction is often species-specific, as CCA species can be either inducers or inhibitors to larval settlement and metamorphosis. Despite this importance, information on Caribbean CCA distribution, diversity, and impact on coral species is limited due to the difficulty in identifying them. In the present study, CCA samples were collected from seven different reef sites in the southeastern region of Florida’s Coral Reef and genetically identified using molecular analyses. Some of the samples collected …

Husbandry And Management Interventions For The Conservation And Welfare Of Captive Animals – A Systematic Evidence Map, Anaelle Lemasson Lemasson
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Zoos and aquariums are poised to play increasingly important roles in mitigating the global biodiversity crisis. However, the ultimate success of ex-situ conservation depends on animal welfare and effective husbandry and management practices. As such, an empirical understanding of ‘what works’ in zoo management is crucial for guiding success and embedding cost-effective practices. Here, we present the first systematic evidence map for husbandry and management interventions used in zoos and aquariums. We identified and extracted 1,070 articles spread across 45 journals, and examined patterns within taxonomic, spatial, temporal, and thematic categories. Studies originated from 516 institutions in 69 countries, and …

Microbial And Ecophysiological Indices Of Agricultural Soils As Affected By Different Farming Practices In Tropical Monsoon Climate, Gulshan Ara Begum, Sajal Roy, Nasrin Chowdhury
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Organic farming is increasingly promoted as a sustainable alternative to conventional agriculture due to its positive effects on soil microbial dynamics, a critical component of ecosystem functioning. However, empirical comparisons of microbial responses across these systems are scarce. Therefore, we conducted a study to assess the various microbial indices of soils taken from distinct crop fields (e.g., brinjal, chilli, tomato, bean, and fallow lands) managed under both conventional and organic farming techniques. Composite soil samples from surface layer (0–15 cm) were collected in a completely random way from Bandarban upazila of Bangladesh (22°11'24.0"N 92°09'00.0"E, organic fields; 22°10'12.0"N 92°09'36.0"E, conventional fields). …

Sustainable Water Management In Universities: Perceptions, Behaviours, And Challenges, Hastin Setiani, Dwita Sutjiningsih, Riri Fitri Sari
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Universities are increasingly adopting the “living laboratory” model to implement and evaluate sustainability innovations. These settings enable students, staff, and stakeholders to co-create and test real-world solutions, including those related to water use. Universitas Indonesia promotes sustainability through an integrated approach encompassing policy development, academics programs, and infrastructures. Prior studies using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) have demonstrated that attitudes and perceived norms significantly influence sustainable behavior. However, limited research has examined how these dynamics operate within Indonesian universities or how university-based initiatives may contribute to broader urban water management. This study addresses that gap by examining perceptions, behaviors, …

Assessing The Transformation Of Livelihoods In Illegal Gold Mining Communities, Nurmansyah Ardikoesoema, Mahawan Karuniasa
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Illegal Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining (PETI) in Poboya, Palu City, exemplifies Indonesia’s nexus of socio-environmental vulnerability and institutional marginalization. Although environmental degradation, health impacts, and regulatory challenges associated with PETI have been extensively documented, limited research has systematically examined how the interplay of capital assets and internal motivation drives livelihood transformation pathways within PETI communities. To address this gap, this study uniquely integrates the Sustainable Livelihood Framework with spatial analysis to assess the combined influence of environmental, social, and economic capitals on PETI livelihood transitions. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through quantitative survey and qualitative in-depth interviews with …

Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by pathological aggregates exhibiting distinct morphologies, such as neurofibrillary tangles and dense circular Lewy body-like structures in Alzheimer's disease, and round hyaline gel-like inclusions and skein-like filaments in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, the mechanisms driving the formation of these diverse morphological structures remain poorly understood. Employing advanced microscopy, including fluorescence lifetime imaging, we investigated condensate aging and aggregation mechanisms of the prion-like domain of hnRNPA1 (A1PrD), a ribonucleoprotein implicated in both disorders. Using a simplified system across various salt and RNA conditions, we demonstrate that homotypic and heterotypic interactions between A1PrD and RNA significantly influence aggregate …

Feeling At Home Outdoors: The Courtyard Of The Rozes House, Marta García-Casabán
Interiority
Although the courtyard was not a central element in the early stages of the Modernist movement, it later became a key transitional space between the interior and the exterior. This concept was reinterpreted in Spain through a balance between modernity and tradition, particularly in holiday homes along the Costa Brava. This research explores the role of the outdoor room in modern Mediterranean architecture and its relationship with the environment, using José Antonio Coderch's Rozes House as a case study. Through redrawing, the text aims to analyse how the 'outdoor room' in Rozes House enhances spatial continuity and strengthens the relationship …

Flex-Spatialities: Interior Spaces, Play, And Fantasy, Camilo Lozano-Rivera
Interiority
This article examines how interior spaces in the digital age have evolved into flexible, adaptive environments shaped by technological mediation and shifting everyday practices. Focusing on smart homes and home offices, this article introduces the concept of flex-spatiality to describe how these spaces continually reconfigure in response to changes in needs and digital interfaces. Grounded in Gregory Bateson’s (1972) theory of play and fantasy, the study explores how interior spatiality operates on two levels: as a locus for expressing identities and as a structure for organising social interaction. Through Bateson’s distinction between metalinguistic and metacommunicative functions, flex-spatiality is framed as …
