Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: The left supramarginal gyrus (LSMG) contributes to attentional allocation for memory encoding and may also reflect memory state and performance. Given the roles of high-gamma and beta bursts in cognition and memory, this proof-of-concept study investigated whether these signals within the LSMG could classify memory state and performance.

METHODS: Using secondary data from 103 epilepsy patients undergoing presurgical iEEG evaluation, we analyzed 141 delayed verbal free recall experiments. Intracranial EEG (iEEG) data, recorded solely from LSMG electrode contacts, were processed to create two-dimensional (2D) tensors of convolved high-gamma (HG), and beta (15-40 Hz) burst activity. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) …

Interspecific Interactions Between Orchelimum Nigripes And Orchelimum Volantum (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae), Marianne Niedzlek Feaver Jul 2025

Interspecific Interactions Between Orchelimum Nigripes And Orchelimum Volantum (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae), Marianne Niedzlek Feaver

The Great Lakes Entomologist

[Excerpt] Interspecific interactions are relatively rare among coinhabiting Orthoptera. Most records are of overzealous males courting females not of their species or, for that matter, inanimate objects. Less frequent are reports of two signalling males interacting, yet these are of interest. Calling songs are used to distinguish species (Alexander 1956). The possibility then exists that the "interference" or, more correctly, the competition for broadcast space that occurs when two closely related species with similar songs interact, may have been influential in shaping aspects of song delivery or pattern.

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Students born after 1996 (Gen Z) perceive themselves as distinct from millennials. Earlier surveys described Gen Z as valuing relationships, meaningful work, financial security, and happiness. Over the past decade, medical school populations have shifted from predominantly millennial to Gen Z. This study examined changes in professional identity formation across this period, using a validated career eulogy instrument.

Methods

From 2015 to 2024, 113 medical students at a rural regional medical school completed an annual career eulogy (98% participation). Students responded to the prompt: “Imagine you are retiring from medicine. In about 50 words, what would you like to …

The Glymphatic System And Sleep: Functional Relevance For Brain Homeostasis And Beyond, David Gozal

Marshall Journal of Medicine

It has been less than 15 years since the glymphatic system was identified. The discovery has revolutionized the understanding of the unique functions of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and the extracellular fluid within the central nervous system (CNS) and their unique connectivity to the rest of the body. The role of sleep in regulating glymphatic clearance from the brain and the potential reciprocal role of the glymphatic system in modulating regional neuronal activities, including sleep states, is rapidly emerging. It is shedding light on the role of sleep and the glymphatic system as toxic waste clearance facilitators for the brain, revealing …

Unusual Wave Morphologies In Ulnar Neuropathy With Marinacci Anastomosis: A Case Report, Micaela Owens

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Marinacci anastomosis is a normal but rare anatomic variant of the median and ulnar nerves, consisting of an interconnection from the ulnar nerve to the median nerve within the proximal forearm. This is a case of Marinacci anastomosis occurring in the presence of both median and ulnar neuropathies, producing unusual waveform characteristics. Knowledge of normal anatomic variation can improve diagnostic accuracy in nerve conduction studies.

The Regulations Of Social Meaning In The Digital Platform Era, Peter O'Loughlin Jul 2025

The Regulations Of Social Meaning In The Digital Platform Era, Peter O'Loughlin

Akron Law Review

The regulation of social meaning has traditionally been subjected to rational choice theory (RCT) perspectives in an age when the internet and technology were in nascent stages of development. Today, social meaning is being regulated in much more subtle but powerful ways by digital platforms who are leveraging behavioral economic (BE) insights to control, dictate, and reshape the social meaning of a variety of social roles, conduct, objects, and events. Whilst this form of social government (or private ordering of society’s social fabric) has obvious and desirable benefits to recalibrating society as a collective and assuaging or reversing the stereotyping …

Present public power generation systems are designed to deliver a set voltage level to their end loads (for example, in computer systems). The current draw (and thus the load Wattage) is determined by the load that the end device is designed to. Common consumer power outlets are sized to 120 VAC with either 15 and 20 Amp (USA/NEMA example) service, for example. Safety is attained via a breaker/fuse in the distribution system. If the load device exceeds the delivery system’s capacity, the safety device is tripped. This all works well when the load device’s power is fixed. However, new systems …
