Simulation Of Magnesium Defects Under Concurrent Stress And Vibration Using Interatomic Potentials, Chimereze Emenike, Christopher Barrett

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science

Magnesium is the lightest structural metal, and its strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios give it great potential for weight reduction in various industries. However, it is brittle at room temperature due to its crystal structure, making it unfit for the manufacture of parts requiring stamping or rolling. Our research is concerned with the movement of defects critical to the ductility of magnesium under different conditions. In this project, we investigated the movement of a Pyramidal Il edge dislocation in magnesium structures undergoing shear and oscillatory stress. We hypothesize that oscillating stress could help the dislocation move more quickly. This would suggest …

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science

Blue OLED emitters are often called the "holy grail" of display technology because they are used to make attractive vibrant colors for lighting and devices. However, they are often unstable and susceptible to faster burnout over time when compared to compounds that produce other colors. Red, blue, and green emitters are important and necessary in a device for white light. Thus, an objective in research is producing a stable blue emitter with an extended lifetime and higher quantum yield, Lanthanides, which are metals from the f-block of the periodic table, are used for their photoelectronic properties. These properties can be …

From Words To Form: Disability In Contemporary Italian And Italian American Literature, Arianna Salomon Jul 2026

From Words To Form: Disability In Contemporary Italian And Italian American Literature, Arianna Salomon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This dissertation traces nearly fifty years of representations of disability, understood as a cultural category, from the late 1970s to the early 2020s, in two interconnected traditions: Italian and Italian American literature. In particular, it explores how disability reshapes the act and aesthetics of writing in contemporary Italian and Italian American novels and memoirs. Given the field’s relative newness, the substantial groundwork still required, and the many connections between literature and disability, this dissertation uses nine case studies with a balanced pairing of Italian and Italian American works in each chapter: Carmelo Samonà’s Fratelli (1978) and Tina De Rosa’s Paper …

Paediatricians' Liability To Patients' Parents For Negligent Genetic Testing, Anthony Sangiuliano Jul 2026

Paediatricians' Liability To Patients' Parents For Negligent Genetic Testing, Anthony Sangiuliano

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has recently held that a paediatrician might owe a duty of care to a patient’s parents when performing genetic testing on the patient and communicating test results to the parents. The parents may be able to claim damages against the paediatrician for breach of this duty if, in reliance on a miscommunication about the test results, they conceive a subsequent child who is later born with a disability. I call the tort alleged by the parents in these circumstances a subspecies of “paediatric triangular torts.” In this article, I demonstrate the conceptual feasibility of …

How Localized Physical Processes Influence Large-Scale Phytoplankton Blooms Near The Sea Ice Edge In The Greenland Sea, Abigail P. Heiser, Till J.W. Wagner, Manfredi Manizza, Dustin Carroll, Conner W. Lester, Dimitris Menemenlis Jul 2026

How Localized Physical Processes Influence Large-Scale Phytoplankton Blooms Near The Sea Ice Edge In The Greenland Sea, Abigail P. Heiser, Till J.W. Wagner, Manfredi Manizza, Dustin Carroll, Conner W. Lester, Dimitris Menemenlis

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The Arctic Ocean has experienced intensifying phytoplankton spring blooms near the sea ice edge. Here, we investigate the drivers of such near-ice blooms in the Greenland Sea by comparing satellite and in situ observations with the ECCO-Darwin physical–biogeochemical state estimate. Satellite data reveal pronounced spring blooms within ~ 200 km of the ice, a signal that is not reproduced in ECCO-Darwin. Observations further reveal that primary production is tightly linked to submesoscale meltwater eddies shed from the ice edge, which are not currently resolved by ECCO-Darwin. We argue that the relatively coarse spatial resolution, together with biases in sea ice …

A Visitation Grid For Complete Coverage Foraging In Robot Swarms, Arturo Gonzalez, Yifeng Gao, Li Zhang, Qi Lu Jul 2026

A Visitation Grid For Complete Coverage Foraging In Robot Swarms, Arturo Gonzalez, Yifeng Gao, Li Zhang, Qi Lu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The complete collection of sparse resources in large, unknown environments remains a challenging problem for autonomous robot swarms. Previous studies have shown that a substantial portion of total mission time is consumed during the final stage of collection, where only a small fraction of randomly scattered resources remain. Consequently, many existing swarm foraging algorithms (search and collection) focus on collecting most resources within a limited time window, rather than improving end-stage efficiency for collecting all resources. We propose a grid-based stochastic foraging strategy that explicitly reduces redundant visits and accelerates late-stage collection. The unknown search area is partitioned into a …

More Than Materials: Understanding The Emotional Labor Of Archivists And Donor Relations, April K. Anderson-Zorn

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Though a crucial part of archives work, emotional labor and its effect on the profession are not well understood. From professional transitions, the loss of a residence, a health crisis, or the loss of a loved one, archivists who have limited experience in working with donors enduring a life crisis can themselves experience emotional trauma. Current archival literature on donor relations primarily focuses on the processes and procedures involved in working with donors to transfer materials. However, there is a notable lack of scholarship on the emotional labor involved in the donation process. The poster will focus on emerging literature …

Governance, Culture, And Law: The Expanding Scope Of Environmental Science And Sustainable Development Research, Ahyaudin Sodri, Herdis Herdiansyah

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Environmental science emerged as a discipline based on physical measurements, such as soil pollutant levels (Ailijiang et al., 2022), ecological restoration (Yue et al., 2026), city surface temperature (Shafizadeh-Moghadam et al., 2025), and microbial density in air samples (Hayleeyesus & Manaye, 2014). However, its objects of study increasingly extend beyond the confines of the laboratory. Questions that were once sufficiently answered with measurement data now require answers through draft laws, Constitutional Court decisions, financial reports of mining companies, and even traditional ritual discourses governing community access to forests. In other words, environmental …

Intermembrane Coupling Between Bcl-Xl And The Ip3 Receptor Supports Local Ca2+ Transfer At Er-Mitochondrial Contacts, Arijita Ghosh, David Weaver, Chi Li, György Hajnóczky

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Bcl-xL, an anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family protein, engages laterally with Bak/Bax in the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) to inhibit apoptosis and interacts with the IP3 receptor Ca2+ channels (IP3Rs) in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane to control Ca2+ release. It is unknown if OMM-localized Bcl-xL can also interact in trans with IP3Rs at ER-mitochondrial contacts to form a tethering complex that supports IP3R-mediated local Ca2+ transfer from ER to mitochondria. We establish that IP3R-mitochondria Ca2+ signal propagation depends on Bcl-xL. By targeting Bcl-xL specifically to different subcellular compartments, we find that OMM-localized Bcl-xL increases the efficacy …

Who’S To Blame? The Politics Of Recognition In Ayta Land Claims Under Ipra, John Albert R. Dela Rosa

Social Sciences and Development Review

With the enactment of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA) in 1997, the Philippines became one of the first Asian countries to legally recognize and protect the rights of Indigenous Peoples. Yet many Indigenous communities continue to struggle to realize the very promises that the law was intended to fulfill. This paper therefore examines how IPRA has shaped—and continues to shape—the Ayta’s efforts to assert ownership and control over their ancestral domain. Drawing on multi-sited ethnography conducted in selected Ayta communities, the study reveals that IPRA remains a paradox. While it has heightened the Ayta’s awareness of their rights and …
