Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Purpose: Advocacy for the inherent value, dignity, and well-being of patients is a fundamental nursing duty (American Nurses Association, 2015). However, not all nurses are empowered to act as patient advocates. Nurses who work in cost-constrained environments undertake greater patient loads, experience greater burnout, and have poorer access to opportunities to improve patient care (Harvey et al., 2018; Tubbs-Cooley et al., 2019). Union formation and participation is an intervention that nurses worldwide may employ to advocate for patient care needs and equitable working conditions (Dube et al., 2016; Johnson & Billingsley, 2014). The purpose of this study is to describe …

Reset (Resilience, Empathy And Support For Employees And Teams): Pilot Program To Mitigate Nurse Burnout, Karen E. Vizyak, Andrea K. Moore

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly shaped alarming healthcare trends, including plummeting nurse engagement and retention along with skyrocketing reports of burnout. In response, a community hospital in Colorado launched the RESET (acronym for Resilience, Empathy and Support for Employees and Teams) pilot program to create customized individual, team and organization-wide interventions to foster optimal well-being of all staff. A multidisciplinary RESET team collected data from various departments, and the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) survey administered to nurses on the two medical-surgical units revealed the highest frequency of nurses (59% in one unit and 41% on the other) were experiencing moderate …

Who Gets A Seat At The Table? Stakeholder Participation In Sec Rulemaking, Yuliya Guseva, Irena Hutton, Adam C. Pritchard, Joseph Grundfest Feb 2026

Who Gets A Seat At The Table? Stakeholder Participation In Sec Rulemaking, Yuliya Guseva, Irena Hutton, Adam C. Pritchard, Joseph Grundfest

Law & Economics Working Papers

We study how public participation shapes financial regulation using a novel dataset of 453 SEC rules proposed between 1995 and 2024. We collect over 81,000 public comments and 5,600 meetings between regulators and stakeholders related to those rules. Using large language models, we identify participants and extract structured measures of comment content and tone. We document asymmetries in stakeholder participation: retail investors dominate comment volume with shorter submissions, while institutional actors engage primarily through detailed comments and meetings with the SEC officials. Input from sophisticated stakeholders is more likely to be incorporated into the final rule release and informs rule …

Department of Occupational Therapy Posters and Presentations

Background

  • Occupational therapy is a cornerstone rehabilitation profession that provides client-centered care for individuals experiencing a loss of independence at any age.
  • Over 90% of occupational therapy educational programs use simulation.6
  • Research suggests that simulation can be used to prepare occupational therapy students for their full-time clinical placements.1,5
  • However, little is known about occupational therapy students' perceptions of the effectiveness of simulations compared to introductory clinical fieldwork experiences to enhance specific clinical skills.

The Rise Of The Global Middle Class, Homi Kharas Feb 2026

The Rise Of The Global Middle Class, Homi Kharas

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

As part of the Brookings Scholar Lecture Series, Brookings Mountain West presented a lecture titled, "The Rise of the Global Middle Class" by Brookings senior fellow in global economy and development, Homi Kharas.

For the last two hundred years, ever since the start of the Industrial Revolution, the most successful economies in the world have developed large, stable middle classes. With globalization, the expansion of the middle class has accelerated to a historically unprecedented speed. But global consumerism is scaling faster than the adaptation of institutions, ecosystems, and social norms. Brookings senior fellow Homi Kharas discusses his most recent book, …

Structural And Mechanical Properties Facilitate Shock Wave Damping By Helmet-Like Orbital Hoods In Snapping Shrimp, Mia Kazel, Rebekah E. Cammack, Alexandra C.N. Kingston, Ahmed A. Alshareef, Tarek Shazly, Daniel Isaac Speiser Feb 2026

Structural And Mechanical Properties Facilitate Shock Wave Damping By Helmet-Like Orbital Hoods In Snapping Shrimp, Mia Kazel, Rebekah E. Cammack, Alexandra C.N. Kingston, Ahmed A. Alshareef, Tarek Shazly, Daniel Isaac Speiser

Faculty Publications

Snapping shrimp damp the shock waves they produce and use as weapons with a helmet-like structure termed the orbital hood. Here, we ask how structural and material properties contribute to shock wave damping by orbital hoods in Alpheus heterochaelis. Using tensile mechanical testing, we find orbital hoods are approximately half as stiff as carapace and have twice the capacity for viscous energy dissipation. Microstructural features probably contribute to tissue-specific mechanical properties: the endocuticles of orbital hoods have almost twice as many lamellae as those of carapaces despite being half as thick, suggesting a mechanism for enhanced material mobility underlying …

Experiences Of Care-Seeking Parents With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In India, Yash Navnit Patel Feb 2026

Experiences Of Care-Seeking Parents With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In India, Yash Navnit Patel

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects approximately 18 million individuals in India, yet the factors influencing parental care-seeking behavior were not well understood. Guided by the health belief model, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore how parents’ perceived severity of a child’s symptoms, parental beliefs about the causes of autism, and perceived mental and physical health outcomes of caregiving influence parents’ intention to seek services for children aged 1–10 years diagnosed with ASD in India. Data were collected using semistructured interviews with 10 mothers of autistic children. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s six-step thematic analysis. …

Program Proposal For A Nurse Led Pre-Procedure Readiness Program, Walter Magramo Feb 2026

Program Proposal For A Nurse Led Pre-Procedure Readiness Program, Walter Magramo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Same-day outpatient procedural cancellations represent a persistent challenge for healthcare organizations, negatively affecting patient safety, access, operational efficiency, and financial performance. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) executive leadership project proposes the implementation of a nurse-led, artificial intelligence (AI)–enhanced preprocedural readiness program within an outpatient procedural department. The initiative integrates standardized nurse-led readiness checklists, AI-supported clinical decision support embedded in the electronic health record, structured nurse-led outreach, and standardized patient and staff education to proactively identify and address preventable barriers to procedural readiness. Internal organizational data identified a sustained same-day cancellation rate of approximately 22%, with most cancellations attributable to …

Preventing Burnout In School-Based Behavioral Health Clinicians: Organizational Strategies For Mitigating Work-Related Mental Health Impairment, Virginia W. Lee

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This is a qualitative case study on Organization X that used the Baldrige Framework to investigate employee burnout, a growing concern associated with staff turnover, reduced job satisfaction, depression, and disengagement. The goal was to examine how organizational leaders assess the effectiveness of burnout prevention strategies, identify organizational factors and leadership practices that either mitigate or increase burnout, and discover key factors that contribute to burnout. Semi-structured interviews, guided by the Baldrige Framework, were conducted with three leaders at Organization X. The themes resulting from interviews included burnout, open-ended communication, team cohesion, real-time protection, ethical leadership and authenticity, restoring norms, …

Nurse-Led Educational Program For Standardized Discharge Coordination, Janet Foster Feb 2026

Nurse-Led Educational Program For Standardized Discharge Coordination, Janet Foster

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Fragmented discharge processes increase the risk of missed follow-up, medication nonadherence, and avoidable 30-day psychiatric readmissions among individuals with serious mental illness (SMI). I conducted this Doctor of Nursing Practice project to address this practice gap by developing a standardized nurse-led educational framework to strengthen discharge coordination in an inpatient psychiatric setting. The practice-focused question examined whether a standardized nurse-led discharge coordination education framework would improve discharge coordination for adults with SMI transitioning from inpatient to outpatient psychiatric care compared with current non-standardized practices. In a comprehensive literature search using the Johns Hopkins Model, I identified 15 peer-reviewed studies, including …

Staff Education To Implement Routine Use Of Hamilton Depression Rating Scale On The Identification And Severity Classification Of Adult Depression In Primary Care, Christencia Nkechi Obinna-Igbokwe Feb 2026

Staff Education To Implement Routine Use Of Hamilton Depression Rating Scale On The Identification And Severity Classification Of Adult Depression In Primary Care, Christencia Nkechi Obinna-Igbokwe

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This Doctor of Nursing practice (DNP) project was a quality improvement initiative focused on staff education to standardize the workflow and documentation of the Hamilton depression rating scale (HAM-D). The goal was to enhance measurement-based care and mitigate inconsistencies in depression severity assessments that could potentially delay treatment modifications, follow-up planning, and safety decisions. The practice-focused inquiry examined whether a concise staff education program, in conjunction with a HAM-D clinical practice guideline, would enhance staff knowledge and preparedness to administer and document the HAM-D for routine severity monitoring in adults exhibiting depressive symptoms. Employing rapid-cycle plan–do–study–act (PDSA) methodologies, five members …

Stickley, Rochelle Mcferguson, Nicole Ward, Leah Richardson, Taylor Steele, Laura Mayfield, Pamela J. Laborde, Rebecca Webb

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Interprofessional education (IPE) is vital to modern healthcare settings and provides students of various healthcare disciplines with the experience and skills necessary to understand their role and other disciplinary roles to improve patient outcomes (Interprofessional Education Collaborative, 2023). In addition, effective teamwork and interprofessional collaboration can foster healthy, effective work environments when each discipline understands their role and the role of other healthcare providers. Opioid overdose and deaths occurred more often in 2022 than in any previous year. In estimated 80,000 people will die annually from an opioid overdose in the U.S. (CDC, 2021). During an IPE naloxone training to …

Effects Of The Reverse Charge Mechanism On Vat Gaps, Albrecht Bohne, James R. Hines Jr., Antonios Koumpias, Annalisa Tassi Feb 2026

Effects Of The Reverse Charge Mechanism On Vat Gaps, Albrecht Bohne, James R. Hines Jr., Antonios Koumpias, Annalisa Tassi

Law & Economics Working Papers

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effect of reverse-charge mechanism (RCM) implementation on VAT compliance using an overall, countrylevel measure of VAT compliance, the VAT gap. The VAT gap is defined as the overall difference between expected and realized VAT revenues and is a broader measure than outcomes employed in previous research, incorporating all types of VAT evasion. Exploiting the staggered adoption of RCM across Europe and the size of industries targeted by RCM, we compare changes in the VAT gap before and after RCM implementation. Evidence from difference-in-differences, event study, and heterogeneous treatment effects estimators indicates …

Staff Education On Motivational Interviewing And Culturally Responsive Education To Reduce No-Shows And Appointment Cancellations, Aisha Adigun Feb 2026

Staff Education On Motivational Interviewing And Culturally Responsive Education To Reduce No-Shows And Appointment Cancellations, Aisha Adigun

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

No-show and late appointment cancellations remain significant challenges in outpatient psychiatry clinics, negatively impacting continuity of care, clinic efficiency, and patient outcomes. Motivational interviewing (MI) and culturally responsive communication are evidence-based approaches that support patient engagement and understanding, yet they are not consistently incorporated into staff education related to appointment adherence. This project evaluates whether staff education on MI and culturally responsive communication increases staff knowledge and skills in educating patients about no-show and appointment cancellation policies and whether this education contributes to improved appointment attendance. A pre–post intervention design will be used in an outpatient psychiatry clinic. Clinical and …
