Hyperdensity On Head Ct—An Imaging Review, Ramsis Benjamin, Christian Menard, Erik Larson Feb 2026

Hyperdensity On Head Ct—An Imaging Review, Ramsis Benjamin, Christian Menard, Erik Larson

School of Medicine Publications

The 3D images derived from non-contrast Computed Tomography (NCCT) scans provide a glimpse into the intra- and extracranial structures, based on the ability of electromagnetic X-rays to penetrate through various tissue densities. The gray matter, for example, possesses a higher density than the white matter, absorbs more X-rays, allows less penetration (attenuation), and thus has larger Hounsfield units (HU), the mathematical value of attenuation coefficient. The CT scanner’s wide availability and ease of use allow for quick assessment of acute neurosurgical abnormalities, such as hemorrhages, mass effect, hydrocephalus, and traumatic injuries. An attenuation value of +60 to +90 HU generally …

A Framework For Assessing The Trustworthiness Of Scientific Research Findings, Brian A Nosek, David B Allison, Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Marcia Mcnutt, A Beau Nielsen, Susan M Wolf Feb 2026

A Framework For Assessing The Trustworthiness Of Scientific Research Findings, Brian A Nosek, David B Allison, Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Marcia Mcnutt, A Beau Nielsen, Susan M Wolf

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Vigorous debate has erupted over the trustworthiness of scientific research findings in a number of domains. The question "what makes research findings trustworthy?" elicits different answers depending on whether the emphasis is on research integrity and ethics, research methods, transparency, inclusion, assessment and peer review, or scholarly communication. Each provides partial insight. We offer a systems approach that focuses on whether the research is accountable, evaluable, well-formulated, has been evaluated, controls for bias, reduces error, and whether the claims are warranted by the evidence. We tie each of these components to measurable indicators of trustworthiness for evaluating the research itself, …

Are Animals “It”? Restoring Animals In Our Language, Gaizel Arguelles Adan Feb 2026

Are Animals “It”? Restoring Animals In Our Language, Gaizel Arguelles Adan

Landas

This essay examines how language marginalizes animals by reducing them to “it,” obscuring their cognition, agency, communication, empathy, and giftedness. Such linguistic marginalization intersects with metaphors and colloquialisms that demean both women and animals and is reinforced by anthropocentric philosophical and theological traditions. While Thomistic thought has often emphasized human superiority, Thomas Aquinas also presents animals as participants in God’s community of creation who reveal divine goodness and glory. Drawing on animal reciprocity and feminist animal care, particularly entangled empathy, this essay proposes an ethic that recognizes animals in their wholeness and uniqueness. Naming becomes a countercultural practice that resists …

The Role Of The Cosmic Christ In God’S Universal Salvific Plan: An Assessment Of Michael Amaladoss’ Christology, Manuel V. Francisco Feb 2026

The Role Of The Cosmic Christ In God’S Universal Salvific Plan: An Assessment Of Michael Amaladoss’ Christology, Manuel V. Francisco

Landas

This paper examines Michael Amaladoss’s Christology, particularly his understanding of the Cosmic Christ within God’s universal salvific plan. Situated within Indian contextual theology and religious pluralism, it explores his use of Advaitic philosophy, symbolic hermeneutics, and dialogical theology in relating Christianity to other religions. Amaladoss maintains that God’s salvific activity extends beyond the historical Christ-event and is mediated through diverse religious traditions. His distinction, without separation, between the historical Jesus and the Cosmic Christ emphasizes Christ’s universal presence beyond and within the incarnation. The paper critically assesses these claims in light of Chalcedonian Christology, Vatican II, and Dominus Iesus, highlighting …

Ministry Of “Listening Deeply” In An Inculturated Church In North Vietnam, Jojo M. Fung Feb 2026

Ministry Of “Listening Deeply” In An Inculturated Church In North Vietnam, Jojo M. Fung

Landas

This synodal process foregrounds the relevance of “listening deeply” as a ministerial praxis which is grounded in a mystagogy with a theology of God’s corporealization in creation/cosmos through the incarnation, and a spirituality of interiority discerning God’s communication ad extra and ad intra facilitated by the everyday exercise of Cosmic One-ing. This ecclesial praxis is relevant in the synodal process of communal discernment. Church leaders need formation in this ministerial practice to become truly inculturated communities that integrate their faith with the local living traditions of the faithful. At the same time, the faithful also incorporate the other living traditions …

The First Companions: Finding Grace In Dispersion, Sickness, And Conflict, Christopher M. Staab Feb 2026

The First Companions: Finding Grace In Dispersion, Sickness, And Conflict, Christopher M. Staab

Landas

In his letter “Confirmed in the Charism,” Father General Arturo Sosa SJ invited the Society of Jesus to understand better how “the first companions were able to read the motions of the good Spirit.” This presentation responds to Fr. Sosa’s call by examining how Ignatius and the first companions found grace in their experiences of dispersion, illness, and conflict. These difficult human experiences fill their extant texts and, as such, provide us with the opportunity to discover how they lived their quotidian apostolic work. Dispersion, illness, and conflict were not experiences to be overcome, but rather experiences to be lived …

The Tagalog Verb, Rich In Nuance: Samples From The Vocabulario De Lengua Tagala (Sb 1613), Part I, Emmanuel C. Marfori

Landas

This study examines the Vocabvlario de Lengva Tagala (SB 1613) of Tomás Pinpin and Domingo Loag, highlighting its significance for missionary language learning and the study of Tagalog culture. Focusing on thirty Spanish verbs and their 884 Tagalog equivalents, it analyzes active and passive forms and their connections with body parts, space, time, instruments, purposes, and social interactions. These verbs offer glimpses into daily life in southern Luzon, including food production, crafts, health, commerce, travel, conflict, hospitality, beliefs, healing, and communal activities. The analysis demonstrates the vocabulary’s linguistic richness and complexity while revealing cultural traces of both Tagalog communities and …

Nurse-Led Telehealth Quality Improvement Initiative For Chronic Disease Management In Rural North Dakota, Alona J. Jarmin Feb 2026

Nurse-Led Telehealth Quality Improvement Initiative For Chronic Disease Management In Rural North Dakota, Alona J. Jarmin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In this quality improvement project, I assessed a telehealth-enhanced care coordination model in a rural primary care clinic to improve chronic disease management for adults with limited access to in-person services. The issues addressed included delayed follow-up, inconsistent self-management support, and limited continuity of care, which significantly affect rural populations and health equity. The purpose of this doctoral project was to evaluate whether a structured telehealth follow-up protocol improved key care coordination outcomes, appointment adherence, follow-up timeliness, and documentation completeness for rural adults receiving chronic disease management services. In this project, I employed a pre-/postimplementation evaluation design using de-identified electronic …

Reasons For Digital Transformation Project Failures Based On U.S. Project Managers’ Lived Experiences, Susan D. Landes Feb 2026

Reasons For Digital Transformation Project Failures Based On U.S. Project Managers’ Lived Experiences, Susan D. Landes

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Digital transformation projects have a failure rate of 66% to 84%, costing U.S. companies billions of dollars each year. Organizational leaders need to understand the implications of these costly failures, leading to substantial financial losses. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive phenomenological study was to explore the reasons for digital transformation project failures from the perspective of the lived experiences of U.S. project managers. The conceptual framework consisted of Lewin’s 3-stage change management model, Correani et al.’s digital transformation implementation model, Herzberg’s 2-factor theory of motivation-hygiene, and von Bertalanffy’s systems theory. The participants were 13 U.S. active, certified professional project …

Molecular Determinant Of Low-Voltage Dependence Of Human Nav1.7 Inactivation Revealed By Efficacy-Based Nav1.7 Selective Inhibitor, Fang Zhao, Chuchu Xi, Jie Li, Kerui Ren, Qinglian Tang, Huaduan Liang, Shilong Yang, Michael X Zhu, Zhengyu Cao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Nav1.7 is a voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) subtype predominantly expressed in sensory neurons, amplifying threshold currents. Here, we identify that Uvarigranol D (UGD) suppresses human (h) Nav1.7 with a much greater maximal inhibition than other VGSC subtypes, despite having similar apparent affinities. We demonstrate that Thr1398 determines the greater inhibitory efficacy of UGD, the leftward shift in voltage-dependence and faster inactivation kinetics of hNav1.7. UGD binds to the inactivated state, with Gln360, Ile394, Lys1395, Phe1737, and Tyr1744 being critically involved. Moreover, while UGD suppresses action potentials in both rat dorsal root ganglion neurons and human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes, …

Probing Intraplate Lithospheric Architecture: Magnetotelluric Imaging Of The Crust And Upper Mantle Across The New Madrid Seismic Zone, Mississippi Embayment, And Alabama-Oklahoma Lineament, Kaushik Sarker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study presents a broadband magnetotelluric (MT) investigation of crustal resistivity structure beneath the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ), aimed at identifying conductive features that may control present-day intraplate seismicity. Because electrical resistivity is sensitive to fluid content, temperature, and rock fabric, it provides indirect constraints on crustal strength and deformation processes, which influence fault reactivation and earthquake occurrence. We collected MT data along a profile spanning the Axial and Reelfoot faults to image subsurface conductivity contrasts associated with these active fault zones. We conducted a broadband magnetotelluric (MT) survey from December 2021 to March 2023 across five profiles- spanning …

Psychological Correlates Of Audiological And Self-Report Indicators Of Hyperacusis In Adults With Misophonia, Mercedes G. Woolley, Karen F. Muñoz, Guadalupe G. San Miguel, Anderson Clements, Julie M. Petersen, Michael P. Twohig

Psychology Student Research

Purpose:

Misophonia and hyperacusis are distinct sound sensitivity conditions that can co-occur and are linked to heightened emotional distress and impaired functioning. This study investigated the convergence between audiometric-based and self-reported indicators of hyperacusis and examined how each related to misophonia severity and psychological outcomes in adults with misophonia.

Method:

Participants (N = 60) completed self-report measures and underwent loudness discomfort level (LDL) testing.

Results:

Analyses revealed discrepancies between self-reported and LDL-defined hyperacusis, with no significant associations between LDL-based classifications and psychological or misophonia-related outcomes. In contrast, hyperacusis identified via a standardized self-report measure was significantly …

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

An increase in the occurrence of large, high severity wildfires in the western Pacific Northwest (PNW), USA, has created an urgent need for science to better inform forest management and policy decisions to maintain source water quality in the region. The western PNW faces similar challenges to other regions with shifting wildfire regimes and large population centers reliant on surface water from forested catchments. However, the uniquely wet and highly seasonal climate of the western PNW suggests that findings from other, more frequently burned regions may not be directly applicable. To identify science, monitoring, and management gaps and opportunities in …
