Authoritarianism As A Service: India’S Moves To Weaponize Private Sector Content Moderation With The 2021 Information Technology Rules, Michael Karanicolas May 2023

Authoritarianism As A Service: India’S Moves To Weaponize Private Sector Content Moderation With The 2021 Information Technology Rules, Michael Karanicolas

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

A central regulatory challenge related to the spread of Internet access is that the power of mass communication has both been democratized and decentralized into the hands of anyone with a connected device, but also consolidated in a handful of massive tech companies, providing opportunities for unprecedented surveillance and control over the public discourse. This paper argues that the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 pose a severe threat to freedom of expression in India, by providing an avenue for the government to coopt these enormous powers under revised safe harbor provisions that essentially turn …

India's Take On Legal Remedy Of Passing Off: A Celebrity's Perspective, Niharika Salar, Sonal Sinha May 2023

India's Take On Legal Remedy Of Passing Off: A Celebrity's Perspective, Niharika Salar, Sonal Sinha

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

The development of mass media led to the development of intrigue and curiosity around celebrities and their persona, and the profits hidden therein. Harping upon this intrigue, stakeholders realised the brand power behind celebrity personalities. However, problems arose when there was an increase in the unauthorised exploitation of celebrity personalities. While on the legal front, several remedies are resorted to, William Prosser narrowed down these into four, i.e., intrusion into one’s private space, disclosure of one’s personal and private facts, disclosure of incorrect facts that puts one under a false light and misappropriating one’s personality for commercial gain. Hinged on …

In-House Counsel, The Adoption Of Artificial Intelligence, And Legal Ethics, Dr Felicity Bell, Prof. Michael Legg May 2023

In-House Counsel, The Adoption Of Artificial Intelligence, And Legal Ethics, Dr Felicity Bell, Prof. Michael Legg

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

In-house counsel have become a large and influential group of lawyers in many jurisdictions. When it comes to transactional and regulatory work, they play a key role. Nevertheless, in-house counsel are also under pressure to create efficiencies in legal work, with tightening legal budgets and ever-growing volumes of regulation. Artificial intelligence (AI) applications are often suggested as a means of creating these cost savings. There is a strong business case for using AI in this context as routinised work lends itself to economies of scale. But what are the implications of using AI, for the in-house lawyer? They must ensure …

Mere Christianity And The Moral Argument For The Existence Of God, Christopher A. Shrock May 2023

Mere Christianity And The Moral Argument For The Existence Of God, Christopher A. Shrock

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

C. S. Lewis’s moral argument for the existence of God from Mere Christianity has been called the “most widely-convincing apologetic argument of the twentieth century.” It is concise and commonsensical. But Lewis’s argument has come under heavy fire in past decades, most notably from John Beversluis and Erik Wielenberg. This article offers an alternative reading on which the moral argument from the opening chapters of Mere Christianity is not only valid but also original and defensible. Unlike other moral arguments, Lewis deals in neither metaethics nor moral pragmatics. So he avoids prickly objections related to Divine Command Theory and accusations …

Paradise Retained: C. S. Lewis On The Nature Of Knowledge, Reality, And Morality In Perelandra, Richard L. W. Clarke May 2023

Paradise Retained: C. S. Lewis On The Nature Of Knowledge, Reality, And Morality In Perelandra, Richard L. W. Clarke

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

The world-view which informs Perelandra (1943) in particular and the so-called “space trilogy” more generally, of which it is the second volume, is deeply infused with that blend of Christianity and Platonism that is the hallmark of the thought of C. S. Lewis and which I explore at some length in the companion essay to this piece in this volume, “The Neoplatonic Christianity of C. S. Lewis.” Perelandra is, I would argue, a literary rendition of some of the most important philosophical arguments in defense of Christianity mounted by Lewis in Mere Christianity and elsewhere.

An Economic History Of Ellis County, Kansas, Danielle Knoll, Alison Helget, Matthew Lamunyon, Colton Wagner, Daniel Robert Mcclure

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

Like many American rural communities in the second decade of the twenty-first century, Ellis County faces tough decisions regarding economic development, population growth, and sustainable strategies. This paper examines the history of the region since the early twentieth century, tracing the evolution of various industries—from oil to farming—and the different ways the community responded to the area and nation’s economic shifts. This “big picture” view of Ellis County operates as a starting point for strategizing paths forward for area residents.

Universe And You: A Search For Universal Moral Values, Jillian Meyer '23 May 2023

Universe And You: A Search For Universal Moral Values, Jillian Meyer '23

Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium

Intercultural and multicultural communication can be difficult when opposing points of view try to find common ground. This is, in part, due to the different moral values people hold, which can come from their spiritual beliefs, legal systems, personal principles, relationships, and more. The present study aims to find a set of universal moral principles that apply to all humans in order to improve intercultural and multicultural communication. This study will synthesize the current literature on universal moral values across six different disciplines. These disciplines include philosophy/ethics, religion, communication, developmental psychology, evolutionary psychology, and anthropology. First, this paper will review …

Mindfulness And Acceptance In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Trauma-Informed Approach, Chloe Hriso, Alexa Bonacquisti May 2023

Mindfulness And Acceptance In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Trauma-Informed Approach, Chloe Hriso, Alexa Bonacquisti

Research Day

Preterm labor or other medical conditions resulting in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admission has an immense potential to be a traumatic event for both parents and their babies. Birth trauma in the context of the NICU may lead to a heightened stress response, decreasing one’s ability to cope with those stressors. This experience may have long-lasting effects for both parents and infants, necessitating a better understanding of interventions that can be offered during NICU admission and beyond to address trauma responses from both a physical and psychological perspective. The positive effects of mindfulness and acceptance-based interventions have the potential …

Building Inclusive And Welcoming Student Health Centers For Transgender Students, Corey N. Brisseau, Peter J. Ehrig, Erika L. Thomas, Sherry Mendez

Research Day

INTRODUCTION:

While health, wellness, and healthcare are essential to every human being, not much is known about the health and healthcare experiences of transgender students on college campuses. Understanding these healthcare experiences are important because when we recognize them, we can establish a healthy relationship of trust. There is a growing number of transgender students on West Chester University campus, who felt they were not getting the appropriate support and care. As a result, a project was started at student health services to help transgender students effectively access sensitive and welcoming care and support.

METHODS:

To address the needs of …

Attitudes And Practice Patterns In The Use Of Omm In Patients With Serious Illness, Corey N. Brisseau, Brenda L. Hoffman, Nicol E. Joseph, Lauren Noto-Bell, Stephanie H. Felgoise, Michael Srulevich

Research Day

INTRODUCTION:

In addition to evidence-based medicine, the osteopathic approach to person-centered care consists of the osteopathic philosophy of integrated structure and function and applying manual techniques to treat somatic dysfunction. Known collectively as Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM), this approach can be utilized when treating patients with both chronic and acute conditions; however, there is limited data on how often or to what extent OMM is used to treat pain and other symptoms in patients facing serious or life-limiting illnesses.

METHODS:

A voluntary, anonymous survey was created to capture the practice patterns and attitudes of osteopathic physicians, regardless of specialty, in …

Development And Evaluation Of A Virtual Postpartum Psychosocial Support Program Based Upon Acceptance And Commitment Therapy (Act), Tori E. Abdalla, Alexa Bonacquisti

Research Day

INTRODUCTION: Improving psychological adjustment and support among women in the postpartum period has great personal and public health significance, with the potential to improve quality of life and functioning for women, children, and families. Despite growing recognition of this need, availability and accessibility of specialized postpartum treatments remain limited, particularly in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lack of in-person treatment options. This project sought to address this need through the development and evaluation of a postpartum psychosocial support program that is delivered in a virtual format.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the project was two-fold: (1) …

Growing The Pipeline Of Men Of Color In Medicine, Mark Martin, Jacquelyn Gerhart, Marcine Pickron-Davis

Research Day

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare professions suffer from an imbalance in the number of culturally and ethnically diverse providers and the populations they serve. This poster presentation will illustrate our commitment to mitigating the dearth of underrepresented men in medicine. Currently, African Americans make up 13% of the U.S. population, but only 4% of U.S. doctors and less than 7% of U.S. medical students. (Of active U.S. doctors in 2013, 48.9% were white, 11.7% were Asian, 4.4% were Hispanic or Latinx, and 0.4% were American Indian or Alaska Native.) (HBR, August 10, 2018). In 1986, 57% of black medical school graduates were men …

Strategic Use Of Wellness Ambassadors To Increase Attendance Of Initial Mental Health Appointments, Kaitlyn Blair, Mirna Law, Bettina Bernstein May 2023

Strategic Use Of Wellness Ambassadors To Increase Attendance Of Initial Mental Health Appointments, Kaitlyn Blair, Mirna Law, Bettina Bernstein

Research Day

Background

Many adults and children with mental health conditions in the US do not receive treatment, and in Philadelphia alone, there were 174 suicide deaths in 2017. The shortage of mental health professionals and long wait times are significant barriers to accessing mental health care. Executive function difficulties can make it challenging for individuals to maintain a schedule for mental health appointments. A study found that reminder phone calls result in an increased rate of mental health appointment keeping. The goal of this project is to increase attendance of first mental health appointments by patients referred to mental health services …

Reasons For Not Refilling Medications: A Research Proposal, Tori E. Abdalla, Frederick J. Goldstein May 2023

Reasons For Not Refilling Medications: A Research Proposal, Tori E. Abdalla, Frederick J. Goldstein

Research Day

INTRODUCTION:

It is estimated that medication non-adherence costs the United States approximately 528 billion dollars annually. Of that amount, it is estimated that only 50% of medications are adhered to for treatment of chronic diseases. Targeting improvement of a single aspect of medication non-adherence, e.g., refill compliance, could increase successful treatment of any medical condition where this a problem. Several broad solutions have been proposed, such as provider education, increased communication, and technology-based interventions; however, without knowing why patients do not refill their medications, providers might not know which solution(s) to initiate.

OBJECTIVES:

The aim of the proposed study is …

Morality And Me: An Investigation Of A Moral Framework For College Students, Jillian Meyer '23 May 2023

Morality And Me: An Investigation Of A Moral Framework For College Students, Jillian Meyer '23

Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium

The field of moral psychology studies how people make decisions about right and wrong. These moral decisions can be based on a number of different moral considerations in the dilemma. The present study looks at the moral considerations of college students in the U.S when faced with a moral dilemma. We surveyed U.S. college students in February 2023 by presenting them with a moral dilemma they might come across during their college years and asking what they would do in the situation and why. This study developed the Moral Dilemmas Questionnaire to test the moral reasoning of college students. The …

Discovering Distinct Patterns Of Alpha Activity In Adults With Inattentive Adhd Using Electroencephalography, Lucy Salter '23 May 2023

Discovering Distinct Patterns Of Alpha Activity In Adults With Inattentive Adhd Using Electroencephalography, Lucy Salter '23

Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium

According to data collected and analyzed by researchers, it has been estimated that roughly 8.7 million adults live with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), resulting in an estimated $122.8 billion in excess societal costs due to increased healthcare costs, unemployment, and loss of productivity all of which are linked to ADHD symptoms (Schein et al., 2022). Additionally, literature suggests that adult ADHD is associated with increased risk of imprisonment and substance abuse, decreased educational achievement, increased comorbid psychiatric conditions, and poorer clinical outcomes (Ginsberg et al., 2014). Although there is a relatively clearer understanding about ADHD in adolescents, particularly the hyperactive ADHD …

Don’T “Just Google It”: Deweyan Perspectives On Participatory Learning With Online Tools, Eric Thomas Weber, Heather Cowherd, Mia Morales May 2023

Don’T “Just Google It”: Deweyan Perspectives On Participatory Learning With Online Tools, Eric Thomas Weber, Heather Cowherd, Mia Morales

Education and Culture

John Dewey argued that for education to be democratic, it is important for students to be not merely spectators but also participants in learning. Teachers sometimes find personal computing devices to be distracting or to contribute to passivity rather than activity in the classroom. In this essay we examine the question of whether a student’s Google search on a subject matter discussed in class is participatory or passive. We argue that with proper guidance students’ use of online searches and related tools can empower students democratically as sources of ideas, conceptualizations, information, and insight while emphasizing participation in deliberation and …

Information And Communications Technologies And Democratic Education: Lessons From John Dewey's Pragmatism, Jonathan Flowers May 2023

Information And Communications Technologies And Democratic Education: Lessons From John Dewey's Pragmatism, Jonathan Flowers

Education and Culture

This essay applies lessons from John Dewey’s theory of democracy and democratic education to the modern development of information communications technologies and the assertion that the development of such technologies will lead to a more open, more democratic society. Given the continuity of the technology and its applications with structures of oppression within modern society, any attempt to resolve or democratize technology through skills-based training is bound to fail, as this does not resolve the cultural habits that enable oppression through technology. To this end, what is necessary is democratic education that recognizes the unique contexts in which students become …

Challenges In Education: A Deweyan Assessment Of Ai Technologies In The Classroom, Ande Eitner May 2023

Challenges In Education: A Deweyan Assessment Of Ai Technologies In The Classroom, Ande Eitner

Education and Culture

Artificial intelligence is profoundly transforming the world in various spheres and already finding its way into educational institutions. This essay aims to examine whether the Deweyan ideal of education can be achieved through such digital means. By analyzing how both the aims and means of education, as defined by Dewey, can be understood in the context of learning with artificial intelligence, the inherent differences of both educational approaches are brought out. It becomes apparent that important concepts that characterize successful education for Dewey, such as intrinsic inquiry, experience-based schooling, and thinking as the method for learning, do not go hand …

Data And Growth In Education: A Deweyan Analysis, Kevin Taylor May 2023

Data And Growth In Education: A Deweyan Analysis, Kevin Taylor

Education and Culture

For Dewey, growth in the educative process means education that enriches and expands one’s experience as it prepares students for not only a vocation but also entry into and transaction with the world. In few places can we see growth, generally understood, to be occurring as fast as in big data technology. This essay begins with an overview of what big data is, specifically what big data looks like in education as understood through learning management system platforms but also data as understood generally on a college campus through dataveillance, or data surveillance understood as the monitoring or possibility of …

Synthetic Or Not: Implications Of Hormonal Birth Control On Women's Hormones And The Cortisol Stress Response, Madeline Perry '23 May 2023

Synthetic Or Not: Implications Of Hormonal Birth Control On Women's Hormones And The Cortisol Stress Response, Madeline Perry '23

Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium

Women’s bodies are the subject of decision-making and control, yet women’s lives are dismally ignored. The field of women’s health is highly understudied, and the demand for that adequate research must be granted to the women’s health field. This interdisciplinary research study investigated stress response differences between hormonal birth control users and non-users. Hormonal birth control (HBC) is one of the greatest technologies afforded to women and further research is necessary to ensure women are guaranteed bodily autonomy and women’s health education. Due to altered hormonal signaling, HBC has been linked to behavioral and decision-making differences in women. Building off …
