Dolphin Behavioral Responses To Uncrewed Aerial Systems As A Function Of Exposure, Height, And Type, Savannah Damiano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) are becoming a standard tool in the study of cetaceans, however, a comparative assessment of animal responses to UAS has not been established to gauge the most effective systems for cetacean study. We utilized Dolphin Quest Bermuda’s eleven bottlenose dolphins as subjects for such an investigation taking place over five weeks in 2022 and five weeks in 2023. The dolphins were evaluated for investigative behavioral responses to six off-the-shelf UAS types and a custom fixed wing system. Each UAS was flown in decreasing height vertically above the main dolphin lagoon to evaluate dolphin behavioral responses in …

Heating Systems And Households’ Expenditure, Svitlana Holyk

Master's Theses

The heating energy expenditure has been frequently taken to the consideration across different studies of poverty reduction. However, there is an unresolved question related to understanding how households’ expenditures might be distinct due to the heating system characteristics. This research implements matching methods to investigate the causal effect of the heating system on households’ gas and electricity expenditure in Ukraine. The result indicates that there is a significant difference in the utility expenditure between the District heating system (DHS) and the Individual heating system (IHS) households. The inherited from the past the Soviet District heating system Model in Ukraine doesn’t …

The Impact Of Couple Minority Stress And Perceived Relationship Equity On Relationship Satisfaction Of Women In Same-Gender Relationships, Rebekah Malott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test two hypotheses (H1: relationship satisfaction will mediate the relationship between perceived relationship equity and potential relationship dissolution in women in same-gender relationships. H2: Relationship satisfaction will mediate the relationship between perceived minority stressors and potential relationship dissolution in women in same-gender relationships). Participants who met the demographic profile and consented to the study were asked to complete five questionnaires: relationship equity (Kurdek, 1998), couple minority stress (Neilands et al., 2019), relationship satisfaction (Funk & Rogge, 2007), potential relationship dissolution, and demographics. The results showed that relationships satisfaction was a partial mediator between …

The Shifting Paradigm Of Pain Management Among U.S. Elderly Community Dwellers, Morgan Isaac Bromley May 2023

The Shifting Paradigm Of Pain Management Among U.S. Elderly Community Dwellers, Morgan Isaac Bromley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Managing pain is a demanding task among elderly people as almost one third of them are experiencing chronic pain. Opioids are commonly prescribed to relieve pain symptoms, but there were no significant benefits compared with non-opioid medications. Guidelines from government agencies have dramatically changed the practice of opioid prescriptions in the community. However, for some legitimate reasons, many elderly people still need opioid medications to manage their pain. This research explored the trends of opioid use, chronic use, and heavy use of opioids among elderly people; examined the impact of different opioid use patterns on the healthcare utilizations among elderly …

The Lived Experiences Of Emergency Medical Technicians When Seeking And Participating In Individual Counseling Sessions, Ester Joy Hutchinson May 2023

The Lived Experiences Of Emergency Medical Technicians When Seeking And Participating In Individual Counseling Sessions, Ester Joy Hutchinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation explored the lived experiences of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) that sought and participated in individual counseling sessions. I examined barriers that EMTs in the United States face, as well as discussed relevant literature from current research. By implementing a phenomenological approach that utilizes convenience sampling, this study uncovers the lived experiences of EMTs participating in individual counseling sessions. I interviewed seven EMTs that had participated in at least three individual counseling sessions to understand their experiences. In this investigation, I discovered that these EMTs believed that seeking therapy might be perceived as a sign of weakness by their …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Abstract This research addressed Indian immigrant parents’ challenges when they immigrated to a new and unknown sociocultural context different from where they were raised. They struggled to parent their growing children, who were exposed to another belief system when enrolled in the United States school system. They were challenged between preserving their home culture by teaching their children and adapting their mainstream host culture by learning from their children, which are quite the opposite in their cultural perspectives. Therefore, this research investigated the challenges of Indian immigrant parents who struggled to balance their home and host cultures. This research utilized …

Perceptions Of Transactional Distance From Black Males In Asynchronous Online Math Courses, Shontale M. Bryant May 2023

Perceptions Of Transactional Distance From Black Males In Asynchronous Online Math Courses, Shontale M. Bryant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Transactional distance theory (Moore, 1973, 1993, 2013, 2019) identifies transactional distance as a psychological or communication gap that can be perceived by learners based on their personal educational needs and/or preferences. These perceptions of distance can occur in any learning environment but especially in distance learning or online learning environments and can influence course satisfaction, participation, and persistence (Tinto, 2009). Perceptions of transactional distance are observed through interactions (learner-instructor, learner-learner, learner-content; Moore, 1989) and are influenced by the theory’s three main tenets of course structure, dialogue, and learner autonomy through instructional design and personalization. Qualitative interviews were conducted with Black …

An Evaluation Of College Administrators And Staff Inclusion Practices For Undergraduate Students With Autism, Kimberly Bracey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Autism is a neurobiological disorder characterized by impairment in social interaction, communication, and repetitive stereotyped patterns of behavior. Autism rates have continued to increase in the United States and a cause or cure has not yet been found. In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder increased from the rate of 1 in 150 in 2000 to 1 in 88 in 2008. When students in high school desire to transition from secondary to postsecondary education, college brochures, and other marketing advertisements appear to target the general education student. College advertisements rarely …

Ungrading Writing: Changes In Motivation, Volition, And Perceived Learning, Jennifer B. Wilson May 2023

Ungrading Writing: Changes In Motivation, Volition, And Perceived Learning, Jennifer B. Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Motivation and volition are critical precursors to learning, as students learn best when the course material is relevant and personally meaningful. The ARCS-V (i.e., attention, relevance, confidence, satisfaction, and volition) model addresses motivation from an instructional design perspective. Underlying the model is a learner-centered locus of control. Research suggests that grades can be a barrier to learning because they are teacher-centered, allowing instructors to control the reward and punishment cycle. When grades are given, earning high marks often replaces learning as the educational goal. In response to this concern, many undergraduate composition instructors have implemented ungrading, an assessment method in …

Criminalising Neonaticide: Reflections On Law And Practice In England And Wales, K Brennan, E Milne

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This chapter considers the unusual case where a woman is suspected of killing her newborn baby following a secret pregnancy and birth. The research on what we know about the circumstances and incidence of what has been termed ‘neonaticide’ is explored. The complexities of these cases in terms of their circumstances and the vulnerability of women who conceal their pregnancies are highlighted. Following this, the difficulties, from a legal perspective, that arise when seeking to prosecute women for homicide when their babies die following an unassisted concealed birth are considered. What we know about current criminal justice practice in these …

Targeted, Neha Joshi May 2023

Targeted, Neha Joshi

Theses

The document is about the impact of targeted advertising on individuality and the loss of privacy. I describe my personal experience of being influenced by advertisements and how it led me to question my identity. I highlight how algorithms use personal information to categorize people and target them with specific ads, leading to a loss of privacy. I also argue that the internet has provided us with platforms to promote ourselves, but we lose our identity in the process of being boxed up and targeted by advertisements. I conclude by emphasizing the importance of recognizing and spreading awareness about the …

Parkinson’S Disease – Palliative Care Needs Assessment Tool: Adaptation And Psychometric Testing, Edward William Richfield, Victoria Allgar, Afaf Girgis, Miriam J. Johnson

Peninsula Medical School

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease is a progressive, life-limiting disease, which benefits from structured palliative care. Systematic recognition and triage of needs helps facilitate care, allows focused referral to specialist palliative care and aids sustainability of services. Existing palliative care tools for Parkinson's are patient/caregiver completed and focus on quantification rather than identification of the need. The Needs Assessment Tool: Progressive Disease in Cancer was designed for rapid identification of unmet needs in cancer. We describe adaptation and psychometric testing of the tool for Parkinson's disease (NAT:Parkinson's disease). METHODS: Set in secondary care, Parkinson's disease outpatient clinics in the UK, this study …

Peninsula Medical School

Emotional wellbeing of family carers and people with dementia is associated with not only how each individual copes with stress and conflict, but also by how they cope together. Finding ways to positively cope together was particularly important during COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, when other avenues of emotional support were less available. We explored how carers experienced and used emotion-focused dyadic coping styles during the COVID-19 pandemic. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted during the pandemic with 42 family carers, supplemented by quality of life scores collected both pre- and during the pandemic and household status. Abductive thematic analysis identified five styles …

A Thousand Views Of The Cathedral: The Law, Politics, And Statistics Of Pandemic Dashboards, Jeff Lingwall, Tj Bliss

Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine

This Article explores the law, politics, and statistics of communicating data through the thousands of state, county, school district, and higher-education dashboards created in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Using a nationally distributed questionnaire and series of interviews with dashboard managers and stakeholders, we offer a wide-ranging view of data visualization practice in response to COVID-19. We pair this evidence with a survey of almost 3,000 entities responsible for public health communication, which resulted in collection of over 1,100 COVID-19 dashboards from a spectrum of government actors and private parties. We evaluate how legal issues were perceived and acted …

Limits On Biomedical Research: Whether, Why, And How, Christine Grady May 2023

Limits On Biomedical Research: Whether, Why, And How, Christine Grady

Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine

This article examines the limitations of laws and regulations in regulating biomedical research. While laws and regulations can serve as guardrails to limit certain research studies, they are often blunt instruments that struggle to keep up with the rapid pace of scientific progress. Moreover, laws in one jurisdiction may not be binding on others, making it difficult to regulate the global scientific community. The article argues that regulatory parsimony should be exercised, imposing regulations only where they work and not where they are unhelpful. The article also explores the ethical considerations surrounding biomedical research and its impact on society, including …
