Bayesian Or Frequentist? Testing The Association Between Statistical Approach In A Research Methods Class Project And Research Attitudes, Jacob B. Rode
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Research methods courses commonly include an empirical project. This quasi-experimental study examined whether using Bayesian statistics to analyze data would be associated with more positive student perceptions of research methods projects. At a private university in the U.S., two research methods courses were taught using frequentist statistics and two using Bayesian statistics for the project analyses. Students (N = 88) reported their attitudes towards research three times across the semester, and their perceptions of the project at the end of the course (Time 3). At Time 3, there were no significant differences between frequentist and Bayesian classes in their …

"Better Than A Boring Textbook": Studying Development Through Middle-Grade Literature, Heidi A. Sackreiter
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
College students are sometimes reluctant to purchase textbooks for various reasons, but they still must study the necessary content in a course or academic program. This Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research project examined college students’ perceptions of reading middle-grade novels in place of a traditional, formal textbook within an Adolescent Development course. All participants were part of a teacher education program at a four-year, public institution in the Midwest United States. Questionnaires were administered at the conclusion of two semesters, and respondents shared impressions about the middle-grade reading. Response to studying middle-grade novels instead of a textbook was …

Instructional platforms that incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) are emerging in higher education. Scholarship of teaching and learning should not only examine student learning outcomes from the use of novel AI technologies but should also investigate student perceptions of these technologies. We employed the user experience (UX) framework to investigate students’ UX of the instructional AI-driven platform, Packback, as a mode for online discussion boards. A survey using the User Experience Questionnaire was developed and employed in a general elective arts and humanities undergraduate course offered online and in-person. Data from 96 undergraduate student responses were analyzed and large variability was …

Curriculum Negotiation: Supporting Student Autonomy To Enhance Student Engagement, Brenda L. Thomas, William Reynolds, Jonathan Ponce De Leon, Caroline Sorbara
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Student disengagement has become a prominent concern across higher education in the five years since the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet students who are engaged in learning tend to be more successful academically. Therefore, pedagogies that enhance student engagement increase the probability of students’ success. This qualitative study explored curriculum negotiation as one such pedagogy. Results demonstrated similar behavioral and cognitive engagement from students in traditional and negotiated classes, but greater affective and agentic engagement from those who negotiated the curriculum with their classmates. Additionally, more students in negotiated classes indicated transformative learning than students in traditionally taught classes. We examine the …

Architectures for agentic operations often involve a coupling of the input interface and the execution environment on a single piece of hardware. Such configurations can result in resource strain on mobile hardware, affecting battery longevity and data usage, and may encounter compatibility issues with desktop-centric web workflows. A dispatch protocol is disclosed that decouples the input interface from the execution environment. A dispatch payload is generated on a source device (e.g., a smartphone) or relayed via a third-party messaging channel (e.g., enterprise communication platforms or instant messaging applications). This payload includes a task prompt, browser configurations, and user context. The …

A discovery gap exists where users often fail to recognize that an automated assistant is capable of assisting with tasks during a browsing session. This frequently leads to manual navigation through complex web workflows. To address this, a method is disclosed for the proactive presentation of assistant prompts based on resource locator analysis. Upon navigating to a resource locator or receiving a resource locator via a notification, the target page is analyzed to categorize functional capabilities. If a workflow compatible with an automated assistant is identified, such as a multi-step booking or purchasing process, a context-specific prompt is presented. This …

Holographic Data Sharding For Cross-Jurisdictional Storage And Ephemeral Edge Reconstruction, Mohsin Alam
Holographic Data Sharding For Cross-Jurisdictional Storage And Ephemeral Edge Reconstruction, Mohsin Alam
Defensive Publications Series
A waveform security model may use a holographic sharding process to transform a data object into a set of mathematically incomplete and individually unintelligible interference patterns. An orchestration engine can distribute these shards across multiple storage providers and/or jurisdictions, configured to prevent a single entity from possessing sufficient information for reconstruction. The complete data object can be reconstituted, for example, ephemerally within a secure processing environment on an authorized client device (e.g., a smartphone, a laptop computer) at a time of use. This process can render data non-local, disaggregated, and mathematically incomplete at rest, potentially improving data sovereignty and secrecy …

Tasks are managed through a decoupled interaction and execution framework. An execution environment on a primary device performs a task and detects an interrupt state when a decision node is reached that lacks parameters or confirmation. A natural language query object is serialized and routed via a cloud messaging service or chat to an authenticated secondary device. Remote input is captured at the secondary device and transmitted back to the primary device. The input is parsed and injected into the execution runtime, allowing the task to resume from the point of interruption. This process enables the extension of decision-making logic …
The Living Memory System: A Framework For Transforming Death Care Infrastructure Into A Perpetual Relational Ecosystem For Memory Preservation, Family Continuity, And Citizen-Governed Memorial Stewardship, Joseph Jm Walker
Defensive Publications Series
The death care industry operates under structural conditions that systematically disadvantage grieving families through information asymmetry, compressed decision timelines, relationship termination at the point of transaction, fragmented archival systems, and the absence of citizen-governed transparency standards. Simultaneously, the digital era has created a second layer of fragmentation in which human lives generate vast quantities of meaningful material that remains structurally disconnected from permanent physical memorial locations and inaccessible across generations.
This disclosure presents the Living Memory System — a modular, globally applicable framework repositioning memorial infrastructure from a primarily transactional service category into a long-term continuity ecosystem serving families, communities, …
Spectragrid Vision Transformer, Johny Manuel-Devadoss, Deepthi Prasad
Spectragrid Vision Transformer, Johny Manuel-Devadoss, Deepthi Prasad
Defensive Publications Series
Vision Transformers have become the dominant paradigm for visual learning due to their ability to model long-range dependencies through self-attention. However, dense pairwise attention introduces quadratic computational complexity with respect to token count, severely limiting scalability in high-resolution and long-duration perception tasks. Existing efficiency improvements reduce attention overhead but preserve the underlying assumption that global visual understanding requires explicit token interaction.
This paper introduces the SpectraGrid Vision Transformer (SG-ViT), a unified architecture that replaces dense self-attention with structured perceptual computation, sparse routing, persistent latent world modeling, and autonomous action-driven reasoning. Instead of recomputing dense token interactions at every timestep, SG-ViT …

Generative video systems can produce generic or incoherent output when given vague user prompts. A creative rewriter (CR) system may function as an automated script-generation system that can transform high-level user intent into a comprehensive, structured script. The CR system is configured to analyze minimal inputs, such as a short text phrase or a static image, and can generate detailed instructions specifying elements like plot, narrative arc, camera cinematography, pacing, character actions, and sound design. This process can provide a downstream video synthesis model with a detailed blueprint, which may improve the generation of narratively coherent and cinematically detailed video …

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
High turnover among millennial hospitalists, who constitute a large proportion of early-career physicians, remains a concern. Using purposeful sampling, we surveyed 136 millennial hospitalists to understand what factors influence their decisions to leave a hospital medicine group. Family reasons (81%) and geographical location (80%) were the factors most commonly identified as important influences on decisions to leave. While these factors may be non-modifiable to a large extent, these findings underscore the importance of identifying such needs at the time of recruitment. Institutional reputation was ranked the least frequently influencing factor, when millennial hospitalists contemplate leaving a hospital medicine group. Understanding …

Subaltern Alternatives: Reclaiming Agency Through Spatial Articulation, Nadirah Ali
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
The concept of the subaltern, introduced by Antonio Gramsci to describe populations excluded from political, social, and economic power while still being used to sustain dominant systems. Today, migrant construction workers often occupy this condition: essential to urban growth, yet denied dignity, visibility, and participation in the cities they build. Their housing is frequently reduced to an instrument of control—spaces designed to contain labor rather than support life. This thesis proposes an architectural alternative.
The project examines contemporary cases of labor exploitation in the United States, Qatar, and Singapore, where migrant workers have faced unsafe conditions, wage theft, …

Myocardin-Dependent Regulation Of Adam12 And Adam19 Promotes Fibronectin Fibrillogenesis During Pleural Fibrosis, Uday Siva Naga Sankar Allamneni
Biotechnology Theses
Pleural fibrosis involves excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition driven by chronic injury and inflammation. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) induces mesothelial–mesenchymal transition (MesoMT), promoting a myofibroblast phenotype. Our laboratory identified myocardin (Myocd), a transcriptional coactivator, as a key mediator of MesoMT that regulates ECM-remodeling proteases. RNA-seq and qPCR analyses showed that ADAM12 and ADAM19 are upregulated by TGF-β but suppressed by Myocd knockdown in Human pleural mesothelial and IPF-derived cells. Silencing ADAM12 reduced fibrotic markers, including fibronectin and smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), whereas ADAM19 showed relatively minor effects. ADAM12 knockdown also impaired fibronectin fibrillogenesis and insoluble matrix assembly, as confirmed by …
Not The Only Game In Town: Unconsolidated Democracy, Elite Capture, And Shifting Alliances In Georgia, Leah Mayerhauser
Not The Only Game In Town: Unconsolidated Democracy, Elite Capture, And Shifting Alliances In Georgia, Leah Mayerhauser
CISLA Senior Integrative Projects
This paper examines Georgia’s post-Soviet political development to explain why the country, once viewed as a leading candidate for democratic consolidation, has experienced sustained democratic erosion and shifting geopolitical alignment. Drawing on Juan Linz and Alfred Stepan’s theory of democratic consolidation, it argues that Georgia never fully achieved a consolidated democracy after independence, leaving key institutional arenas including civil society, political society, rule of law, state bureaucracy, and economic society, unevenly developed and vulnerable to elite capture. Through a historical and institutional analysis from 1991 to 2026, this paper traces how early failures in state formation, unresolved questions of stateness, …
