Fault Location In Dc Microgrids Using Traveling Waves, Sajay Krishnan Paruthiyil May 2026

Fault Location In Dc Microgrids Using Traveling Waves, Sajay Krishnan Paruthiyil

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In DC power systems, rapid fault location is crucial for maintaining reliable operation, particularly with the prevalence of DC-DC converters. This study investigates fault location techniques in DC systems utilizing Traveling Waves (TWs). Following data normalization, multi-resolution analysis employs discrete wavelet transform to capture high-frequency patterns of TW's wavelet coefficients. Parseval's theorem is utilized to quantify the energy of these coefficients. First, a curve-fitting technique is employed to estimate fault locations in DC microgrids. Then, two transfer learning approaches are proposed: first approach integrates Parseval energy curves into a Gaussian process estimator, while second employs feedforward neural network for fault …

Perception Of Mental Illness: Exploring Spatial Impacts On Well-Being, Dilan Stafin May 2026

Perception Of Mental Illness: Exploring Spatial Impacts On Well-Being, Dilan Stafin

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Bipolar disorder is often misunderstood, and its complex sensory and emotional needs are rarely considered in architectural design. Although research demonstrates that the built environment significantly affects stress, regulation, and healing, these insights are seldom applied to spaces dedicated to mental health awareness. This thesis investigates how architectural thresholds within a mental health awareness museum in Harris County, Texas, can bridge the gap between spaces of experience and spaces of care.

Reframing thresholds as therapeutic elements, the study draws on trauma theory to examine how transitions between openness and enclosure, stimulation and pause, and exposure and protection can spatially express …

Dynamic Trust Calibration, Bruno Miranda Henrique May 2026

Dynamic Trust Calibration, Bruno Miranda Henrique

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Trust calibration between humans and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is crucial for optimal decision-making in collaborative settings. Excessive trust can lead users to accept AI-generated outputs without question, overlooking critical flaws, while insufficient trust may result in disregarding valuable insights from AI systems, hindering performance. Despite its importance, there is currently no definitive and objective method for measuring trust calibration between humans and AI. Current approaches lack standardization and consistent metrics that can be broadly applied across various contexts, and they don’t distinguish between the formation of opinions and subsequent human decisions. This thesis brings a novel and objective method for …

Justice For None: How The United States’ Sexual-Offense System Fails Victims, Defendants, And The Public, Hannah J. Flannery May 2026

Justice For None: How The United States’ Sexual-Offense System Fails Victims, Defendants, And The Public, Hannah J. Flannery

Advanced Issues in Criminal Law: Sex Offenses

This paper argues that the United States criminal justice system fundamentally fails in its treatment of sexual offenses by retraumatizing survivors while simultaneously relying on punitive mechanisms that undermine meaningful accountability and rehabilitation. Through an examination of adversarial courtroom practices, prosecutorial discretion, plea bargaining, sex-offender registries, and civil commitment regimes, the paper demonstrates how American law prioritizes punishment, political performance, and moral panic over truth, dignity, and public safety. In contrast, comparative analysis of France, Canada, and the Nordic countries reveals alternative models grounded in consent-based legal frameworks, trauma-informed procedures, and rehabilitative justice. These systems emphasize proportionality, reintegration, and institutional …

The Role Of Ceo Biases And Heuristics For Large Firms’ Innovation, Cristina O. Vlas, Radu E. Vlas May 2026

The Role Of Ceo Biases And Heuristics For Large Firms’ Innovation, Cristina O. Vlas, Radu E. Vlas

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

Do different CEO biases affect large firms’ innovation differently, and to what extent are these effects bounded by CEOs’ heuristics? In this article, we highlight overlooked antecedents, such as the biases imposed by CEO narcissism and self-monitoring and the heuristics driven by CEOs’ motivation (regulatory foci) for certain courses of action. We found that narcissistic CEOs differ from self-monitoring CEOs when it comes to innovation. We found that, for self-monitoring CEOs, these effects are conditioned by the individuals’ underlying promotion and prevention motivation, but this is not the case for narcissistic CEOs. These findings contour our understanding of the immutability …

Shimmer Methodology: May 2026 Cultural Studies Association Of Australasia, Lola Montgomery May 2026

Shimmer Methodology: May 2026 Cultural Studies Association Of Australasia, Lola Montgomery

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

This webinar presents an overview of the contemporary state of creative-practice research and autotheory before introducing Shimmer, an emerging methodological framework developed through creative practice, postgraduate supervision, and reflective inquiry. The presentation argues that while creative-practice research has successfully established creative work as a legitimate form of knowledge production, and autotheory has legitimised lived experience as theoretical material, both traditions leave relatively under-theorised the embodied moment through which insight first emerges.

The significance of the work lies in its contribution to ongoing debates around embodiment, affect, intuition, and knowledge production within creative-practice research. Shimmer proposes a language for understanding …

Discipline Or Damage? How Corporal Punishment Affects The Psychological Wellbeing Of Children In The School Setting, Umulkheir Mahamud Sharif Ali

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Corporal punishment continues to be used in many homes and schools despite research linking it to negative psychological outcomes in children. Previous studies, primarily focused on home settings, have associated corporal punishment with increased anxiety, depression, aggression, and emotional distress. However, less research has examined how these outcomes appear within school environments, where discipline occurs in more structured institutional settings. This thesis investigates how corporal punishment in schools affects students psychologically, emotionally, and academically through a literature review of peer-reviewed studies from psychology, education, and public health. The findings show that many of the mental health outcomes associated with corporal …

Neuroscience is a rapidly growing field, which needs to continue becoming more accessible and understandable to younger generations. Expanding access to neuroscience through different modes, such as podcasts, brings the discipline to a broader audience. Podcasts allow listeners to follow an outlined learning path they can pursue on their personal timeline. High school students often do not have access to neuroscience specific materials within their standard science curriculum. To address this knowledge gap, I collected questions about neuroscience from high school students across four schools in the United States to develop an understanding about what they are interested in learning. …

A Mathematical & Computational Study Of Voting Power In Social Choice Systems, Madison T. Gambon May 2026

A Mathematical & Computational Study Of Voting Power In Social Choice Systems, Madison T. Gambon

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis develops a computational framework for measuring the vulnerability of voting rules to coordinated strategic manipulation. While classical results show that most voting systems are theoretically manipulable, less is known about the magnitude of coordination required to alter outcomes or how that magnitude varies across institutional designs. I define the minimal manipulating coalition size k* as the smallest number of voters whose strategic ballot changes can overturn a sincere election outcome under a given rule. To enable cross-election comparison, I introduce the normalized manipulation threshold θ = k*/n . Using algorithmic search procedures and Monte Carlo simulation, I estimate …

The Role Of Cultural Contexts Within Marketing Strategies Of Experiential Tourism Across Countries That Rely Heavily On Tourism, Maren Bronson May 2026

The Role Of Cultural Contexts Within Marketing Strategies Of Experiential Tourism Across Countries That Rely Heavily On Tourism, Maren Bronson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Developing a cultural mindset requires awareness of one’s cultural background and recognizing that culture provides a broader framework for understanding the world around us (e.g. values, behaviors, and expectations). At the same time, tourism continues to expand globally, contributing approximately 10% of global GDP in 2025, serving as a major driver of economic growth for destination countries (WTTC, 2025). As destinations increasingly rely on international visitors, tourism marketing must satisfy the needs and wants of international tourists. This thesis reviews the literature on culture, marketing, and tourism to  examine how cultural contexts shape experiential tourism marketing strategies in tourism-dependent countries, …

Physics-Informed Diffusion Models For Left Ventricular Blood Flow Reconstruction, Yuxuan Xu May 2026

Physics-Informed Diffusion Models For Left Ventricular Blood Flow Reconstruction, Yuxuan Xu

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality worldwide, and timely diagnosis depends on imaging tools that can reveal the mechanical state of the heart in real time. Echocardiography is the primary bedside imaging modality for cardiac assessment, but it only provides sparse, one-dimensional Doppler velocity measurements whose accuracy is highly sensitive to probe position and beam angle. Reconstructing full three-dimensional blood flow fields for the left ventricle from sparse 1D velocity measurements is an ill-posed problem, where current traditional clinical methods are insufficient.

This report documents contributions made during the Spring 2026 semester in the Kong Lab at Washington …
