"Hopefully This Thing Is Legit:" Student Experiences Of Administrative Burden With A Promise Program, Rosa Maria Acevedo, Denisa Gándara, Sasha Smith May 2026

"Hopefully This Thing Is Legit:" Student Experiences Of Administrative Burden With A Promise Program, Rosa Maria Acevedo, Denisa Gándara, Sasha Smith

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Despite the expansion of tuition-free college (Promise) programs as a financial aid strategy, little is known about how students learn about, navigate, and experience them. This qualitative case study examines how second-year students encounter administrative burdens in a Promise program (PROMISE) at a large university that seeks to minimize compliance costs. Findings reveal a tradeoff between ease of access (low compliance costs) and program-related information (high learning costs). Minimal eligibility requirements contrast with limited marketing, leaving students misinformed about key aspects of their aid. Elevated learning and psychological costs generate stress and uncertainty. Despite these challenges, students draw on navigational, …

Journal of Student Financial Aid

This paper explores the financial challenges and financial wellness of first-year students from a large, public, urban research university in the Midwest. Utilizing a financial wellness lens, we uncover students’ financial preparation and identify key financial challenges they face in managing college expenses while exploring how institutions can better support students in understanding and planning for the financial costs of higher education. Our findings highlight students were encouraged to attend college but lacked financial preparation and support, limiting their ability to manage their college expenses; the financial advice and resources provided often did not align with students’ actual experiences and …

Low-Overhead In-Kernel Telemetry For Ml Accelerators Using Shared Memory Fifo, N/A, N/A May 2026

Low-Overhead In-Kernel Telemetry For Ml Accelerators Using Shared Memory Fifo, N/A, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

Existing profiling tools for machine learning accelerators often lack the granular visibility to diagnose performance bottlenecks within collective communication kernels, typically identifying only that a kernel is slow without pinpointing the specific cause. A method for in-kernel telemetry uses a shared memory first-in-first-out (FIFO) queue established between a host central processing unit (CPU) and an accelerator device. The accelerator kernel is instrumented with lightweight hooks that write fine-grained telemetry events, such as data arrival timestamps from peer accelerators, directly to the FIFO without blocking execution. A dedicated process on the host asynchronously polls the FIFO to consume the telemetry data. …

Multimodal Intent Prediction Via Retroactive Context Fusion And User Memory Priors, Jinpeng Wang May 2026

Multimodal Intent Prediction Via Retroactive Context Fusion And User Memory Priors, Jinpeng Wang

Defensive Publications Series

Today’s smart devices often feel slow and clunky because they wait for long pauses in speech and ignore what happened just before you started talking. This paper introduces a better way for devices to predict what you want by looking at a mix of clues. The system saves a few seconds of audio before you speak and combines it with where you are looking in real-time. By comparing this info with your past habits, the device can guess your goal before you even finish your sentence. This allows the system to start your request sooner, fix mistakes proactively, and stop …

Real-Time Bio-Adaptive Audio Modification Using Predictive Analysis And Generative Re-Synthesis, Nikhil Kumar May 2026

Real-Time Bio-Adaptive Audio Modification Using Predictive Analysis And Generative Re-Synthesis, Nikhil Kumar

Defensive Publications Series

A described real-time, bio-adaptive audio modification system can operate on a consumer device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or wearable device. The system may use a multi-stage artificial intelligence pipeline to predict potentially startling events from concurrent video and audio streams. It can then use generative source decomposition to isolate a specific sound and apply neural re-synthesis to transform its acoustic characteristics into a form with a potentially reduced physiological impact. System intervention can be dynamically modulated by real-time biometric data from a user, such as heart rate variability, which can provide a proactive, personalized method to reduce physiological responses …

Edge-Computed Dynamic Licensing Using Generative Perception And Agentic Resource Settlement, Nikhil Kumar May 2026

Edge-Computed Dynamic Licensing Using Generative Perception And Agentic Resource Settlement, Nikhil Kumar

Defensive Publications Series

Some digital rights management systems can employ static, user-based licenses that may not fully account for dynamic viewing environments, such as the number of viewers present. An edge computed system can operate locally on a client device, for example, a smartphone, a smart television, or a wearable device. The system may utilize a generative perception engine to analyze multi-modal sensor data, which can generate an anonymized textual description of the viewing scene and perform liveness detection. A dynamic smart contract engine can then synthesize a machine-readable session license based on this real-time contextual information. An autonomous agentic settlement system may …

No Cuts: How Hayao Miyazaki Highlights The United States’ Inadequacy In Protecting Foreign Authors’ Integrity, Bridget Johns May 2026

No Cuts: How Hayao Miyazaki Highlights The United States’ Inadequacy In Protecting Foreign Authors’ Integrity, Bridget Johns

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Although the United States joined the Berne Convention in 1989, U.S. copyright law reflects a restricted approach to moral rights protection. Unlike many Berne signatories, the U.S. largely frames copyright as an economic right rather than as a way to protect artistic integrity. Japanese law, by contrast, treats moral rights as central to creative work protections, emphasizing the importance of the work’s dignity and author’s intent. This incongruity has significant consequences in the globalized era, particularly when foreign works are distributed within the U.S. Weak statutory moral rights protections leave authors vulnerable to misattribution and distortion without meaningful recourse. This …

What The Court Tells Reporters: A Discourse Analysis Of Press Interviews With The Justices Since 2000, Brown James May 2026

What The Court Tells Reporters: A Discourse Analysis Of Press Interviews With The Justices Since 2000, Brown James

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The Supreme Court of the United States is among the most influential institutions in American life, yet it is also well known to be one of the most secluded and inaccessible. By and large, the justices only pass their thoughts and decision-making processes to the public via their official written opinions, and seldom grant interviews to reporters. General press coverage of the Court has been given considerable scholarly attention, but the limited interviews the justices grant to the press receive comparatively little attention. This article examines those interviews by analyzing 82 press interviews with active and retired justices from 2000 …

Exploring Black, Indigenous, And Other People Of Color’S Opinions, Experiences, And Breadth Of Knowledge On Indigenous Psychedelic Healing Methods For Mental Health In The United States, Daiyah Lanae Williams

ETD Collection

Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) is gaining increased attention for its potential to address mental health concerns; however, little is known about how Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) perceive psychedelic medicine within the sociocultural realities that shape their mental healthcare experiences. The current study examined attitudes toward and willingness to use psychedelic medicine for mental health among BIPOC adults in the U.S., including investigating how attunement to spirituality/transcendence, meaningful exposure to prior psychedelic experiences, medical mistrust, and importance of identity concordance with providers contribute to these attitudes and willingness. Fifty participants were recruited to complete an online survey with …

The Relationship Between Parental Intrinsic Emotion Regulation And Extrinsic Child-Focused Emotion Regulation On Parent Stress, Leigh M. Richards May 2026

The Relationship Between Parental Intrinsic Emotion Regulation And Extrinsic Child-Focused Emotion Regulation On Parent Stress, Leigh M. Richards

ETD Collection

Parenting stress is a significant public health concern, which research indicates is closely tied to parents’ emotional regulation capacities. Parents must manage their emotions (intrinsic regulation) while guiding their children’s emotional development (extrinsic child-focused emotion regulation). Research has examined these components independently but there is little empirical work exploring how a parent’s intrinsic emotion regulation capabilities and extrinsic child-focused emotion regulation capabilities jointly relate to their stress. The purpose of this present study was to examine how parents’ ability to regulate their own emotions and respond to their child’s emotions relates to their parenting and general stress. Specifically, this study …

Dying To Be Heard: The Power Of Words In The Lived Experience Of “Severe And Enduring Anorexia Nervosa”, Limor Weinstein

ETD Collection

Anorexia nervosa, especially when it lasts for several years, is one of the most challenging illnesses to treat and has a high mortality rate. Despite advancements in treatment and care, over 25% of individuals with severe and enduring anorexia nervosa do not fully recover, with many continuing to live with the illness for many years, often facing serious consequences such as disability, early death, or suicide. This Heideggerian phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of individuals who have been diagnosed with anorexia nervosa for over seven years, with a specific focus on communication and messages received, related to the illness …

Dilemma Of Food Safety Information Release In The Protection Of Consumer Rights And Interests, Kong Fei May 2026

Dilemma Of Food Safety Information Release In The Protection Of Consumer Rights And Interests, Kong Fei

Food and Machinery

From the perspective of consumer rights protection, and in light of the existing institutional mechanisms and practical conditions in the field of food safety, this study finds that the current release of food safety information faces several dilemmas, including insufficient transparency in government food safety information disclosure systems, relatively single channels for information dissemination, and a relatively lagging public opinion monitoring system. In response to these dilemmas, solutions can be proposed from three distinct dimensions. First, enhancing the transparency of the government food safety information release system, namely by clearly defining the responsibilities of various departments and enriching the types …

Nobiletin Improves Organismal Health By Regulating Circadian Rhythms : Absorption, Mechanisms, And Delivery Strategies, Zhang Mengling, Han Lingxian, Zhao Chan, Liang Zengenni

Food and Machinery

Nobiletin, a hexamethoxyflavone unique to citrus peels, exhibits activity in regulating circadian rhythms. Characterized by a low molecular weight, it can cross the blood-brain barrier and demonstrates various biological functions, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular protective, and anticancer effects. However, limitations such as its low water solubility, high crystallinity, and poor stability hinder its nutritional and functional performance in food applications. Therefore, this review summarizes the in vivo absorption of nobiletin, its penetration through the blood-brain barrier, and the biotransformation processes of its active metabolites. Furthermore, this review discusses the regulatory effects on the central clock and peripheral clocks, as well …

Development Paths Of Holistic Regional Public Brand For Agricultural Products Based On Four-Tier Collaborative Mechanism, He Jie, Huang Weisu, Tang Guizhen, Wan Jin, Peng Jinyan, He Guoqing, Lu Baiyi

Food and Machinery

Considerable progress has been made in the research and construction of regional public brands for agricultural products. After experiencing several models such as the three-tier structure of "city, county, and enterprise", a brand structure based on the four tiers of "city, county, town, and enterprise" has emerged, and it has further evolved into a holistic regional public brand model that encompasses multiple industrial elements such as agriculture, light industry, cultural tourism, health care, and cultural creativity. However, during the development process, there are still problems such as inter-level and intra-level resource incoordination among brands at all levels, as well as …
