Patterns Of Practice And Power: Urban And Rural Domestic Service In Western Canada, C. 1880–1920, Julia Stanski May 2026

Patterns Of Practice And Power: Urban And Rural Domestic Service In Western Canada, C. 1880–1920, Julia Stanski

Madison Historical Review

This study explores the daily lives and power relations with their employers of urban and rural domestic servants in Canada’s prairie west. It focuses on the lands now known as Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba between approximately 1880 and 1920, when expanding settler populations were driving a strong demand for domestic labour and new economic and demographic pressures were transforming the profession. Based on newspaper archives and the autobiographical writings of two servants from early twentieth-century western Canada, the paper argues that throughout this period, the day-to-day lives of rural and urban domestics differed significantly in their types of work and …

“Wonderful Things” Turned Consumable: Egyptomania And Fashion In The Early Twentieth Century, Julia K. Moor May 2026

“Wonderful Things” Turned Consumable: Egyptomania And Fashion In The Early Twentieth Century, Julia K. Moor

Madison Historical Review

Examining world fashion history, this article analyzes extant Western women’s evening wear from the early twentieth century that was inspired by contemporary fervor for—and even obsession with—Ancient Egyptian culture, colloquially referred to as ‘Egyptomania.’ It compares dresses from the 1910s and 1920s made by American and French designers in order to trace the evolution of how Egyptomania was manifested in fashion, showing that there was a marked increase in the use of Egyptian motifs and art. This supports the common assertion that Howard Carter (1874-1939), a British archeologist, and his discovery of King Tutankhamen’s (c. 1341 BCE-c. 1323 BCE) tomb …

A Hell Of A Fix: Television And Cultural Transfer During The Iran Hostage Crisis, Grace A. Chapnik May 2026

A Hell Of A Fix: Television And Cultural Transfer During The Iran Hostage Crisis, Grace A. Chapnik

Madison Historical Review

During the Iran Hostage Crisis, television served as a central method of communication between Iran and the United States. Ultimately, saturation of American networks with coverage of the Crisis had a profound impact on the administration of President Jimmy Carter, as a "cultural transfer" of Iranian messaging led the American populace to question their President's abilities to challenge Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Carter was portrayed in the American media as a floundering leader unable to counter the authority of the new Iranian regime, leading the President's popularity to plummet and severely harming his prospects for re-election in the 1980 presidential …

Free In The Forest: Montagnards And U.S. Special Forces In Vietnam’S Central Highlands, Jake L. Brooks

Madison Historical Review

When America began to send U.S Army Special Forces to South Vietnam as advisors in the late 1950s, they needed allies that were familiar with the lush jungles of Indochina. In the Central Highlands of Vietnam, the Montagnard people partnered with the U.S. Army Special Forces in an attempt to keep their homelands safe from the Communists. As an ethnic minority, the Montagnards had been through years of abuse and cultural suppression by their ruling government; kept down by a Vietnamese dominated regime which viewed them as backwards and rebellious tribesmen. For the Green Berets that worked alongside them, the …

"The One Neglect": Lysol Feminine Hygiene Products And The Gendered Body, Katherine Blandford May 2026

"The One Neglect": Lysol Feminine Hygiene Products And The Gendered Body, Katherine Blandford

Madison Historical Review

This paper investigates the gendered history of cleanliness and advertising through Lysol feminine hygiene advertisements in the United States from 1936-1950. Lysol, the disinfectant, was once sold as a feminine hygiene douche up until the 1960s. Lysol douches were promoted to women, specifically married women, through advertisements that focused on portraying the female body as dirty and unclean. Moreover, the advertisements promoted the idea that women who did not use Lysol to douche were solely responsible for any marital problem that arose, like cheating or divorce. These Lysol advertisements showcase a dark history of the pervasive nature of sexist rhetoric …

Post-Surgical Dislocations: A Latarjet Procedure, Brianagh Dean, Kimberly S. Peer May 2026

Post-Surgical Dislocations: A Latarjet Procedure, Brianagh Dean, Kimberly S. Peer

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

BACKGROUND The glenohumeral joint is the most frequently dislocated joint in the body, with an incidence rate of 40.4 per 100,000 in men and 15.5 per 100,000 women. Recurrence rates following a first-time anterior shoulder dislocation range from 33-40%, particularly among adolescent collision-sport athletes. Arthroscopic Bankart repair is performed to address anterior instability, however recurrent instability may occur in the presence of glenoid bone loss. The Latarjet surgery is indicated in cases of recurrent anterior instability with significant bony deficiency, functioning through a triple-blocking mechanism increasing glenoid surface area via coracoid transfer, creating a dynamic sling effect from the conjoined …

Case Report: Chronic Peroneal Subluxation, Natalie Weissman, Morgan Cooper Bagley, Colin Reidy

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

OBJECTIVE The case study presented explores the sign, symptoms, and unique treatment of a patient with a chronic peroneal subluxation of the right ankle. The clinical evaluation showed full range of motion with visible peroneal tendon movement over the right lateral malleolus. Surgery was not done or recommended; a four-phase rehabilitation with a return to play protocol was used. This case showed how rehabilitation through a non-surgical approach is still achievable.

A Case Report Of Blunt Renal Trauma In A High School Football Athlete, Mariah Reeder May 2026

A Case Report Of Blunt Renal Trauma In A High School Football Athlete, Mariah Reeder

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND Blunt abdominal trauma in football athletes is uncommon but carries significant risk for internal organ injury and hemorrhage. Although sport-related renal injuries are rare, a significant portion of them are high-grade (IV-V) and may require advanced medical intervention if not recognized promptly.1 Symptoms may initially appear benign, such as “having the wind knocked out,” increasing the risk of delayed diagnosis. Athletic trainers often serve as first responders and play a critical role in early recognition, on-field management, and prompt referral for advanced medical care. This case highlights athletic trainer led clinical decision making and interdisciplinary coordination following blunt …

Trussworthy - A Lunar Module Truss System, Anthony Wehrli, Sebnem Kalayci, Tyler Williams, Sofia Lopez-Linares Perez, Connor Mcdonagh, Presley Robb

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

TrussWorthy is a modular truss-based construction platform designed to support the gradual development of sustainable infrastructure on the lunar surface. Aligned with NASA’s Moon to Mars objectives, the system emphasizes in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) by transforming lunar regolith into structural components through sintering and additive manufacturing. By reducing dependence on Earth-supplied materials, TrussWorthy aims to lower launch costs while enabling scalable, long-term construction capabilities. The design integrates autonomous excavation, 3D printing, and robotic assembly, building on technologies expected from upcoming Artemis and Commercial Lunar Payload Services missions. Engineered to withstand extreme thermal cycling, vacuum conditions, and reduced lunar gravity, the …

Caught In The Sap: An Argument For Satisfactory Academic Progress Reform Toward Equity For College Students, Z.W. Taylor, Sarah Pauter May 2026

Caught In The Sap: An Argument For Satisfactory Academic Progress Reform Toward Equity For College Students, Z.W. Taylor, Sarah Pauter

Journal of Student Financial Aid

This issue article explores how satisfactory academic progress (SAP) policies act as a major filtering mechanism within the federal student aid process, with a particular focus on how these policies impact student persistence and equity. While the majority of research on financial aid has concentrated on the challenges of the FAFSA application process and how aid supports student retention, less attention has been given to how institutions develop and impose SAP policies and how students navigate these policies and maintain eligibility for federal and other forms of student aid. As a result, this issue article articulates a two-pronged argument to …
