Fewer Polling Places, More Choices For Voters, Jake Shaw, David C. Kimball, Anita Manion

Political Science Faculty publications

Voting is the most basic act of democratic participation, yet for many Americans the hardest part is simply getting to the right place at the right time. Vote centers offer a way forward, but only with careful implementation. Vote centers are an alternative to assigned polling places, where jurisdictions host fewer voting locations but allow residents to vote at any location. While vote centers began roughly 20 years ago, most of the adopters shifted to vote centers after the COVID pandemic in 2020.Our research team has compiled a database of jurisdictions that have adopted vote centers. We have documented at …

Brain-computer interface systems are emerging neurotechnologies that are gradually moving from laboratory research toward clinical application. However, their inherent features, including small sample sizes, heterogeneous technical pathways, and rapid product iteration, make it difficult to integrate safety and efficacy data across studies or to conduct meaningful cross-study comparisons. These challenges not only hinder the cumulative development of evidence in evidence-based medicine, but also complicate the assessment of clinical access and regulatory review. In addition, subjective evidence, such as patient experience, remains insufficiently captured in existing evaluation frameworks. It is therefore necessary to examine the structure of evidence for brain-computer interface …

Specifically, I expand on how they can help …

The Norm Against Nakedly Partisan Justifications And The Callais Exception, Jason Marisam Sep 2026

The Norm Against Nakedly Partisan Justifications And The Callais Exception, Jason Marisam

ConLawNOW

Public law has long maintained a norm against nakedly partisan justifications: while officials may sometimes pursue partisan ends in office, they must justify their actions in court with reasons that do not roughly equal “this benefits my political party” or “this hurts the opposition.” This norm has operated across doctrinal fields, including public employment, administrative law, and election law. In the 2025-26 term, in Louisiana v. Callais, the U.S. Supreme Court abandoned the norm entirely in the redistricting context, treating a state’s pursuit of partisan advantage as a legitimate interest that can defeat a claim under the Voting Rights …
