Lived Experiences Of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists Regarding Anesthesia Provision: A Heuristic Inquiry, Michael Leo Nosbisch Oct 2024

Lived Experiences Of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists Regarding Anesthesia Provision: A Heuristic Inquiry, Michael Leo Nosbisch

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Anesthesia provision combines dynamic medical decision-making with specialized clinical skill performance. The purpose of this study was to explore lived experiences of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) regarding anesthesia provision. The lived experience of anesthesia provision (LEAP) involves what CRNAs experience while providing anesthesia as well as what they believe is most important in that phenomenon. Attitudes, understandings, and opinions (AUOs) held by CRNAs about anesthesia provision guide their intentional clinical behaviors. The Integrated Behavior Model (IBM) was the conceptual framework for this study. This behavioral model involves theoretical constructs that serve as determinants of behavioral intentions. The AUOs and …

So You Want To Support Open Education Resources?, Jackson Harper

Librarian Posters and Presentations

Open education resources (OER) are learning materials that are free for users to utilize and share. They can take many forms-- learning modules, video lectures, etc.-- but they are most commonly known as free online textbooks. In this form, they are a growing presence on course syllabi, but what exactly are these things that faculty are integrating into their courses? Where do they come from? How do they help students? In the presentation, attendees will learn the fundamentals of OER and the reasons instructors choose to adopt them.

Projected Loss Of Rock Glacier Habitat In The Contiguous Western United States With Warming, Abigail C. Lute, John T. Abatzoglou, Andrew G. Fountain, Timothy C. Bartholomaus Oct 2024

Projected Loss Of Rock Glacier Habitat In The Contiguous Western United States With Warming, Abigail C. Lute, John T. Abatzoglou, Andrew G. Fountain, Timothy C. Bartholomaus

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Rock glaciers support alpine biodiversity and may respond more slowly to warming than snow or glaciers. While responses of snow and glaciers to climate change are relatively well understood, a robust assessment of rock glacier environmental niche, future distributions of rock glaciers and potential for development of rock glaciers from current glaciers is lacking. Using process-relevant, high-resolution environmental descriptors, we develop a species distribution model of the topographic, geologic and hydroclimatic niche of rock glaciers that provides novel estimates of potential rock glacier distributions for different climates. We identify mean annual air temperature and headwall area as the dominant controls …

The role of rare non-coding variation in complex human phenotypes is still largely unknown. To elucidate the impact of rare variants in regulatory elements, we performed a whole-genome sequencing association analysis for height using 333,100 individuals from three datasets: UK Biobank (N = 200,003), TOPMed (N = 87,652) and All of Us (N = 45,445). We performed rare ( < 0.1% minor-allele-frequency) single-variant and aggregate testing of non-coding variants in regulatory regions based on proximal-regulatory, intergenic-regulatory and deep-intronic annotation. We observed 29 independent variants associated with height at P < 6×10-10" role="presentation" style="box-sizing: inherit; display: inline-block; line-height: 0; font-size: 18.08px; font-size-adjust: none; overflow-wrap: normal; text-wrap-mode: nowrap; float: none; direction: ltr; max-width: none; max-height: none; min-width: 0px; min-height: 0px; border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 1px 0px; color: rgb(33, 33, 33); font-family: BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, "Fira Sans", "Droid Sans", "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; position: relative;">6×10−106×10-10 after conditioning on previously reported variants, with effect sizes ranging from -7cm to +4.7 cm. We also identified and replicated non-coding aggregate-based associations proximal to HMGA1 containing variants associated with a 5 cm taller height and of highly-conserved variants in …

The Impact Of Covid-19 Response Measures On The Mental Health And Well-Being Of Teachers At Predominately Black Schools, Llewellyn Cooper

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Teachers in predominately Black schools had limited access to mental health resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore how the response to COVID-19 affected the mental health and well-being (MHWB) of teachers at predominately Black schools during the pandemic to gain an in-depth understanding of their experiences regarding MHWB. The study participants were eight teachers at various schools in the state of Alabama. The goal was to understand how teachers experienced MHWB support during the COVID-19 pandemic, how teachers’ MHWB were affected when there were rapid adjustments to curricula changes, and how …

The Perspective Of Formerly Incarcerated African American Men During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Iyesha Shauntae' Franklin Oct 2024

The Perspective Of Formerly Incarcerated African American Men During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Iyesha Shauntae' Franklin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The confluence of two devastating circumstances—the COVID-19 pandemic and the crowded, insalubrious living conditions in American jails as a result of mass incarceration, brought about an epidemic of an unprecedented magnitude. The large jail population, highly susceptible to infections due to overcrowded conditions, experienced exponential spread of the virus. While earlier research examined unhealthy situations related to the prison environment and their effects on inmates, the focus of such studies was not typically major crises or disease outbreaks in prisons. This qualitative phenomenological study used 10 participants located in the southeastern United States as a case study to better understand …

The Relationship Between Parental Political Intensity And Gay Individuals' Mental Health, And The Moderation Of Parental Age, Aaron Whipple Oct 2024

The Relationship Between Parental Political Intensity And Gay Individuals' Mental Health, And The Moderation Of Parental Age, Aaron Whipple

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

During periods of heightened political intensity, gay individuals experience increases in discrimination and prejudice, impacting their mental health, making the need for advocacy and support, particularly from parents and guardians, vital. Recent research shows that parent–child relationships can be heavily influenced by politics and the intensity of their political beliefs. Historically, conservative views have been associated with anti-gay sentiment, which can exacerbate gay individuals’ mental health, leading to familial discord, depression, self-harm, and suicide, whereas liberal views have been associated with supporting gay rights and decreasing mental health disparities. However, prior research has not explored the specific role of parental …

Evaluation Of An Educational Intervention Focused On Intake And Output Documentation, Ingrid Lea Bloomfield Oct 2024

Evaluation Of An Educational Intervention Focused On Intake And Output Documentation, Ingrid Lea Bloomfield

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Heart failure (HF) is the primary reason for hospital admissions in the United States, accounting for almost 6.5 million hospital days per year and for 8.5% of cardiovascular deaths. As part of care delivery and supported by the evidence, providers use intake and output (I&O) to guide a HF patient’s overall treatment plan. Following several reviews in the local organization, it was determined that I&O documentation sheets were incomplete or not completed at all. Thus, organizational leadership determined that an educational intervention focused on I&O monitoring and documentation as part of the HF patient treatment plan would address this gap-in-practice. …

Categorical Differences: Social Identity Heuristics Predict Differences In Cognitive Empathy, Corey Ronald Sims Oct 2024

Categorical Differences: Social Identity Heuristics Predict Differences In Cognitive Empathy, Corey Ronald Sims

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The current study aimed to identify if there was a relationship between cross-ethnic racial identity and cognitive empathy for others and whether social and personal identities mediated this effect. Self-categorization theory was used as the theoretical framework. In this study, it was hypothesized that cross-ethnic racial identity significantly predicts empathic accuracy, and that social and personal identities mediate this relationship. A non-experimental, researcher-designed survey was used to collect participant data and demographic characteristics. Participant inclusion criteria were an age between 18 and 55, U.S. citizenship, and a self-identification as Asian American, Black American, Hispanic American, or White American. The Cross-Ethnic …

The Effectiveness Of Aleks To Address Grade 8 Students’ Math Deficiencies, Joseph Evans

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The math intervention program, Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS), at a Public Middle School (pseudonym) in the Northeast United States, was implemented for eighth grade middle school math students, but researchers have not measured its effectiveness. Grounded in the cultural relevance pedagogy, the purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental study was to determine the efficacy of ALEKS intervention for eighth grade students in improving their smarter balanced assessment consortium (SBAC) mathematics scores. The research question focused on the ALEKS intervention program effects on eighth grade math scores at the study site. An independent samples t-test revealed that the SBAC …

A Survey Of Advanced Border Gateway Protocol Attack Detection Techniques, Ben A. Scott, Michael N. Johnstone, Patryk Szewczyk Oct 2024

A Survey Of Advanced Border Gateway Protocol Attack Detection Techniques, Ben A. Scott, Michael N. Johnstone, Patryk Szewczyk

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The Internet's default inter-domain routing system, the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), remains insecure. Detection techniques are dominated by approaches that involve large numbers of features, parameters, domain-specific tuning, and training, often contributing to an unacceptable computational cost. Efforts to detect anomalous activity in the BGP have been almost exclusively focused on single observable monitoring points and Autonomous Systems (ASs). BGP attacks can exploit and evade these limitations. In this paper, we review and evaluate categories of BGP attacks based on their complexity. Previously identified next-generation BGP detection techniques remain incapable of detecting advanced attacks that exploit single observable detection approaches …

We have developed an approach for identifying non-coding rare variants in regulatory regions with large effects from whole-genome sequencing data associated with complex traits.

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Every individual has a fundamental right to communicate and access equal opportunities to fully participate in society. However, this right may not be fully manifested for individuals with communication access needs especially those from underrepresented groups. This project had two aims, to determine 1) the specific experiences, challenges, and aspirations related to the cultural identities of people of color (POC) who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and 2) how AAC service providers and manufacturers can support POC AAC users in a culturally and linguistically responsive manner. We conducted an online, asynchronous focus group with seven participants over eight weeks. …

Who’S Actually Afraid Of Artificial Intelligence (Ai?), Anthony Adeloye

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Purpose of the study: The main purpose of the study is to explore and discuss the views of a group of Nigerian academic librarians about Artificial Intelligence (AI). The study is considered important because a perusal of an academic librarian’s role requires the ability to organise and manage knowledge which invariably entails the use of some sort of technology which in the context of this study, is artificial intelligence (AI).

Method: To understand the degree to which academic librarians in Nigeria perceive the role of AI in academia, and indeed, society, data were collected from an online survey that …

A Brief Consideration Of The Sacrament Of Marriage: From A Catholic Perspective For Pentecostal Christians, Walter F. Kedjierski Oct 2024

A Brief Consideration Of The Sacrament Of Marriage: From A Catholic Perspective For Pentecostal Christians, Walter F. Kedjierski

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

In this article Kedjierski attempts to highlight areas of convergence between Pentecostal and Catholic understandings of the covenant of marriage while at the same time explicating the divergences of their respective theologies of marriage. He begins with a personal testimony as to why it is important, particularly for Pentecostals and other Christians, to understand why the ritual associated with marriage is important to Catholics. Then he proceeds to explain the Catholic view of marriage as a sacrament that could be intelligible to Pentecostal audiences, including the place of the Holy Spirit in the ritual and living out of marriage. Subsequent …
