Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

This article contributes to Catholic-Pentecostal ecumenical dialogue by offering a particular Catholic perspective on the shared Christian belief in Christ is the Healer. More specifically, it distinguishes several ways in which humans are called to participate in the healing work of Christ. It considers Catholic approaches to sacramental, charismatic, miraculous, biomedical, psychotherapeutic, social, and ecological healing. It reflects on the historical background, contemporary significance, and interconnections of these diverse areas of healing, while distinguishing such a holistic understanding of healing from the narrower concept of a cure. Acknowledging the problem of unhealed sufferers, it argues against blaming such persons for …

Building A Better Security Force Assistance Brigade, William Bittner

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper examines the effectiveness of United States Army Security Force Assistance Brigades (SFABs) in training and advising partner militaries while preserving conventional force readiness. A shortage of volunteers, the manpower demands of embedded security, and lack of a Congressional funding authority have made SFABs and the conventional force less ready for operations. These challenges will be analyzed through the lens of institutional theory to identify systemic threats to the viability of SFABs. This paper posits that an advisor career field should be created in response to an institutional aversion to non-combat roles. Further, the Army should eliminate or shrink …

Coyotes Can Do ‘Puppy Dog Eyes’ Too: Comparing Interspecific Variation In Canis Facial Expression Muscles, Patrick Cunningham, Mahita Shankar, Bridgett Vonholdt, Kristin Brzeski, Sarah S. Kienle Oct 2024

Coyotes Can Do ‘Puppy Dog Eyes’ Too: Comparing Interspecific Variation In Canis Facial Expression Muscles, Patrick Cunningham, Mahita Shankar, Bridgett Vonholdt, Kristin Brzeski, Sarah S. Kienle

Michigan Tech Publications

Facial expressions are critical for non-verbal communication. The Canis genus epitomizes the interplay between behaviour and morphology in the evolution of non-verbal communication. Recent work suggests that the levator anguli oculi medialis (LAOM) muscle is unique to dogs (Canis familiaris) within the Canis genus and evolved due to domestication. The LAOM raises the inner eyebrows, resulting in the ‘puppy dog eyes’ expression. Here, we test whether the LAOM is a derived trait in dogs by (i) examining the facial expression muscles of a closely related and ancestral wild Canis species, the coyote (C. latrans) and (ii) comparing our results with …

The Case Of Santiago De Chile: Pedestrian Deaths, Neo-Liberal Urbanism, And Insufficient Traffic Policy Reform, Olivia Maurer Oct 2024

The Case Of Santiago De Chile: Pedestrian Deaths, Neo-Liberal Urbanism, And Insufficient Traffic Policy Reform, Olivia Maurer

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Chile’s rate of road fatalities and pedestrian deaths has remained a global outlier, even as comparable states have reduced occurrences. Santiago, Chile’s capital and one of the most urbanized cities in Latin America, serves as a unique product of competing urban design ideologies put forth by democratic and authoritarian governments throughout the 20th century; and the social and economic stratification created has continued to present challenges for solving urban planning issues in modern Santiago. Recent adjustments in traffic laws have begun a reduction in road fatalities, but they still do not account for the discrepancy between Chile and other states. …

Cultural Imperialism In The Roman Empire: A Give And Take Relationship Between Imperial Rome And Provincial/External Cultures, Hailey Smith

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

The Roman Empire is often credited with being highly culturally influential both in its time and in later cultural contexts. However, the cultural aspects of art, politics, militarism, etc. for which the Roman Empire is known are the result of interactions between the imperial regime and external entities. The history of the Roman Empire is well documented, but few historians have analyzed the role of conquered cultures and foreign parties on the cultural evolution of Rome. To address these overlooked dynamics between existing cultural groups and their influences on each other, I explore the concepts of ethnicity and framework provided …
