Temperature Affects Nest Box Selection, Nest Success, And Nestling Size In A Southeastern Population Of Eastern Bluebirds, Katie Stumpf
Temperature Affects Nest Box Selection, Nest Success, And Nestling Size In A Southeastern Population Of Eastern Bluebirds, Katie Stumpf
Georgia Journal of Science
Given the critical role of temperature in avian reproduction, rising global temperatures will likely impact reproductive success of many bird populations. We examined the effect of nest box temperature, nest box color, entrance orientation, distance to forest cover, and distance to water on net box selection, nest success, and nestling size in eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis) in central Georgia. White painted nest boxes had significantly cooler temperatures than control nest boxes (P < 0.05). However, model selection revealed that eastern bluebird females selected control boxes, despite their overall warmer temperatures. Nest success was associated with year, likely because of high nest predation during the warmer 2022 breeding season (P < 0.05). Nest success was also associated with cooler nest boxes, possibly because incubating females spend more time incubating which can reduce predation risks. Larger nestlings fledged from painted nest boxes, nest boxes with cooler temperatures, and nests from 2021, which we attribute to decreased thermoregulatory demands enabling faster nestling growth in cooler boxes and years. These seemingly opposing results suggest there may be an optimal temperature range where nest box temperature maximizes reproductive fitness while minimizing energetic demands on incubating adults. Determining this temperature range can help target management efforts to ensure specific goals are met.

Journal of Maine Medical Center
Introduction: Health care professionals are mandated to report select adverse events following immunization (AEFI) to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). Yet, information is lacking about the practices and knowledge of reporting requirements among family medicine faculty and resident physicians.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey of faculty and resident physicians in 10 family medicine residency programs was conducted in Southern California in May 2022. Outcomes included participant reporting practices and knowledge about VAERS.
Results: Of 108 survey respondents (45 faculty, 63 residents), 40 (89%) faculty physicians and 47 (73%) resident physicians had heard of VAERS. However, only 17 (20%) respondents …

Response Latency Reduction For Multimodal Prompts That Include Image And Text, Khalid Salama, Alessandro Agostini
Defensive Publications Series
Chatbot interfaces powered by multimodal large language models (LLMs) can enable users to submit queries that include both images and text. Image pre-processing is performed to analyze the images in the queries to confirm that the query is valid, to extract text and entities from the image, and to tokenize the image. These operations introduce a delay in generating a response to multimodal queries, in comparison to text-only queries. This disclosure describes the use of preemptive image analysis, with user permission, to reduce the time to first token, and thereby, the overall latency of a response from an LLM to …

Communication Embeddings And Router To Support Llm-Based Multi-Agent Systems
Defensive Publications Series
Large language models (LLM) agents are capable of taking actions and performing useful tasks. Complex tasks need collaboration between multiple such agents to accomplish a goal. Existing multi-agent communication frameworks are deficient in supporting such collaboration since these frameworks fail to incorporate critical aspects that would enable effective interactions between agents. This disclosure describes an inter-agent communication framework to improve communication, decision making, and collaboration between LLM agents. In the framework, new embedding paradigms centered around communicative facets can be utilized. The embeddings can enhance communication efficacy and also serve as a foundation for training multi-agent systems to accomplish their …

The Care Quality Commission is responsible for regulating care homes across England to make sure that residents are respected and provided for. But what happens when they find a home who are not doing this? Little is known about commonalities in the main failings that preclude a care home’s closure after CQC intervention and little is known concerning the effects of closing down a home on healthcare professionals. To understand the common themes precluding care home closure and whether debriefing can aid healthcare professionals in dealing with the emotional challenges of care home closure. This study used thematic analysis to …

A Workforce Development Team’S Reflections On Social Work Retention And Turnover In South-East London, Uk, Mark Taylor, Shalini Abrol, Sharon Frieslaar, Corlea Taylor
Journal of Social Care
Statutory children’s services in England experience a high turnover of social work staff. Workforce development teams from these services are seen as part of the solution to reduce the haemorrhaging of social workers. However, how do those working in these teams imagine the world of staff turnover? This paper presents the perspectives of three experienced social workers from a workforce development team in South-East London on staff churn and retention. Informed by a collective experience of over 80 years in social work practice, management and mentoring roles, Sharon, Shalini and Corlea reflect and speculate on two contrasting experiences of social …

This scoping review aimed to synthesise the literature concerning the stigma experiences of men with eating disorders. Seven databases were searched using relevant keywords and subject headings. Following deduplication, articles published since 2000 were screened against eligibility criteria. Key information was charted and analysed using descriptive statistics and deductive content analysis. The final sample (n=9) was synthesised under four categories of stigma experiences within the Health Stigma and Discrimination Framework. Internalised stigma was the most prevalent stigma experience across the included studies. This review suggests that men with eating disorders experience stigma in many forms and across various contexts, including …

Wavefront Sensor Based On Angle Selectivity Of An Optical Filter, Andreas Zepp, Emma Branigan, Julien Garnier, Kevin Murphy, Raphael Bellossi, Karin Stein, Szymon Gladysz
Conference Papers
The effectiveness of free-space laser communications is limited due to wavefront deformations caused by atmospheric optical turbulence. To determine these deformations, we propose a wavefront sensor that utilizes the angular selectivity of an optical transmission filter to measure the first derivative of the wavefront. The transmission filter converts the gradients of the incident wavefront into an intensity distribution. For each direction (x and y) this distribution is captured twice, with different angles between filter and optical axis for each measurement. The contrast of both measurements (calculated for each pixel of the used detector) and the local gradients of the wavefront …

Brawny Brackets: Connecting The Dots From Layout Design To Pull Flow, Rick Hardcopf, Vijay Kannan, Jonathan Ebbeler
Management Faculty Publications
Lean production (“Lean”) is a topic frequently taught in undergraduate and graduate operations/supply chain management courses. Lean's “pull system” is a common component of the instruction, and several useful simulations have been developed that allow students to experience a pull system firsthand. While existing simulations focus on the mechanics of a pull system, the Brawny Brackets simulation focuses on improving “flow”—that is, framing a pull system in the context of layout design and batch sizing, and the waste associated with jumbled flow patterns. The robust and flexible simulation allows instructors to expand or contract the topics taught to match the …

College and career readiness (CCR) has become a priority in national education policy, leading to changes to CCR standards, practices, and measurements. In response to the COVID pandemic, school closings altered student engagement in career and technical education (CTE) courses. CTE teachers played a crucial role in providing CCR support to students by looking for ways to better align curriculum and engagement for successful transitions from high school to college. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to examine how teachers’ implementation of college and career instruction in CTE courses was influenced by the pandemic. Conley’s college readiness framework …
