Maritime Autonomy And Liability: Navigating Uncharted Waters, Manal Cheema, Ariel Sarandinaki Oct 2024

Maritime Autonomy And Liability: Navigating Uncharted Waters, Manal Cheema, Ariel Sarandinaki

International Law Studies

For centuries, people have voyaged the seas, structuring international and domestic law around the premise that people crew ships. However, that premise is no longer guaranteed as unmanned systems and vessels begin to embark on the waters. As the international community and U.S. legislators grapple with whether the law of the sea and domestic maritime law must adapt to accommodate the newest seafarers, it becomes evident that they need to be fully prepared to answer questions of liability and responsibility regarding unmanned vessels. This will become especially apparent when unmanned vessels collide with manned or other unmanned vessels. This article …

BACKGROUND: In 2021, the United States experienced a 14% rise in fatal drug overdoses totaling 106,699 deaths, driven by harmful opioid use, particularly among individuals in the perinatal period who face increased risks associated with opioid use disorders (OUDs). Increased concerns about the impacts of escalating harmful opioid use among pregnant and postpartum persons are rising. Most of the current limited perinatal OUD studies were conducted using traditional methods, such as interviews and randomized controlled trials to understand OUD treatment, risk factors, and associated adverse effects. However, little is known about how social media data, such as X, formerly known …

Challenging The Johnson Amendment: What Safe Space Gets Right - And Wrong, Benjamin Leff Oct 2024

Challenging The Johnson Amendment: What Safe Space Gets Right - And Wrong, Benjamin Leff

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

There has long been a scholarly debate about the so-called Johnson Amendment, which is the statutory provision that prohibits charities from “intervening” in campaigns for public office. Some scholars argue that the Johnson Amendment, or at least the IRS’s interpretation of it, unconstitutionally prevents charities from exercising their fundamental rights to speech or religious liberty. Activists have tried to provoke IRS enforcement of the prohibition so they could argue their interpretation of the Constitution in court, but the IRS appeared to be avoiding litigation on the issue. On March 18, Students and Academics for Free Expression, Speech, and Political Action …

Energy Service Security For Public Health Resilience: Perception And Concerns In Western Upper Peninsula Of Michigan☆, Shardul Tiwari, Zoē Ketola, Chelsea Schelly, Eric Boyer-Cole

Michigan Tech Publications

The Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan includes six rural counties and one Tribal Nation. The region is characterized by long winters, legacies of the extractive mining economy, and the infrastructural features of extreme rurality, including aging housing and low health service density. The region also faces exceptionally high electricity prices. There is limited research on the public health implications of energy service disruption in rural regions resulting from the increasing intensity and frequency of weather events caused by climate change. This article presents research findings examining the readiness of health facilities in this area to manage the rising intensity, severity, …

Exploring Variations In Stem Instructors’ Approaches To Office Hours, Desiree Forsythe, Rebecca M. Green, Jeremy L. Hsu

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Office hours are an integral component of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses at nearly all colleges and universities. Despite their ubiquity as a support mechanism, there has only been limited work examining how instructors approach office hours and what shapes these approaches. Here, we conduct a phenomenographic study to investigate how instructors of STEM courses experience office hours and how these experiences may impact their approaches to promoting and managing office hours. We identified variations in how instructors promoted office hours, the modality of office hours (i.e., when and where office hours were held), and how instructors facilitated …

Digital Assessments For Children And Adolescents With Adhd: A Scoping Review, Franceli L. Cibrian, Elissa M. Monteiro, Kimberley D. Lakes

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Introduction: In spite of rapid advances in evidence-based treatments for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), community access to rigorous gold-standard diagnostic assessments has lagged far behind due to barriers such as the costs and limited availability of comprehensive diagnostic evaluations. Digital assessment of attention and behavior has the potential to lead to scalable approaches that could be used to screen large numbers of children and/or increase access to high-quality, scalable diagnostic evaluations, especially if designed using user-centered participatory and ability-based frameworks. Current research on assessment has begun to take a user-centered approach by actively involving participants to ensure the development …

Association Between Particulate Matter And Copd Among Adults In Alaska, Adeyemi Samuel Alimi Oct 2024

Association Between Particulate Matter And Copd Among Adults In Alaska, Adeyemi Samuel Alimi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Exposure to high levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is emerging as a crucial risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a deadly lung disease with a significant public health burden. The Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) in Alaska has one of the worst PM2.5 issues in the United States. The PM2.5 issues in the area are associated with increased wood-burning and temperature inversions in the winter and wildfires in the summer. Given these prevailing PM2.5 issues, this quantitative study was conducted using Alaska BRFSS datasets and a chi-square test to compare the COPD prevalence in the FNSB with …

We define a subset of macrophages in the tumor microenvironment characterized by high intracellular iron and enrichment of heme and iron metabolism genes. These iron-rich tumor-associated macrophages (iTAMs) supported angiogenesis and immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment and were conserved between mice and humans. iTAMs comprise two additional subsets based on gene expression profile and location-perivascular (pviTAM) and stromal (stiTAM). We identified the endothelin receptor type B (Ednrb) as a specific marker of iTAMs and found myeloid-specific deletion of Ednrb to reduce tumor growth and vascular density. Further studies identified the transcription factor Bach1 as a repressor of the iTAM transcriptional …

The mechanisms driving therapeutic resistance and poor outcomes of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) are incompletely understood. We characterize the cellular and molecular heterogeneity within and across patients and delineate the dynamic evolution of tumor and immune cell compartments at single cell resolution in longitudinal specimens from ibrutinib-sensitive patients and non-responders. Temporal activation of multiple cancer hallmark pathways and acquisition of 17q are observed in a refractory MCL. Multi-platform validation is performed at genomic and cellular levels in PDX models and larger patient cohorts. We demonstrate that due to 17q gain, BIRC5/survivin expression is upregulated in resistant MCL tumor cells and …

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

CMOS Image Sensors (CIS) are the most widely used visual devices in the modern sensing industry, playing a crucial role in converting light signals to digital images. In practical applications, CIS serve as the front end of a vision system, which also includes Image Signal Processors (ISPs) and vision algorithms before delivering the final output to end consumers. The quality of a vision system depends on the metrics used by the end consumer to evaluate the received images. In conventional vision systems, the end consumer is human, and the evaluation metric is image quality, which is based on visual fidelity …

Tqr16: What It Is And What It Can Be, James A. Bernauer

The Qualitative Report

This article was written in response to the Call for the TQR16 Conference in 2025. I was compelled to write this article because of the poignancy of the theme. The questions posed were first whether we care whether our work makes an impact outside of academia and second whether this work would have a greater impact if we involved participants as true co-researchers from the very beginning of our inquiries. I explored these two questions by sharing my thoughts about the citations, the qualitative/quantitative divide, our natural need to discover, barriers to achieving the satisfactory answers to the two questions, …

Stirred By Your Presence, Jeremy D. Bendik-Keymer Oct 2024

Stirred By Your Presence, Jeremy D. Bendik-Keymer

Faculty Scholarship

Traces of you reach me through my senses. But without wondering in your presence, I cannot see you. For beings of sense and meaning such as ourselves, being stirred by another’s presence opens wondering. The implications of such claims are striking for what perception involves, for being in touch with another, and for good relationships. The paper proceeds as a series of “strobes,” from an ancient Greek word for whirling. Turning quickly about, words enact being stirred into won-dering, interspersed with visual glimpses, a photographic series. Building on recent work by the author, the paper draws on Jean-Luc Marion’s phenomenology; …
