How Can Researchers Be Influenced To Comply With Guidelines Of Research Data Management?, Rowena Van Houwelingen, Guido Ongena, Pascal Ravesteyn

Communications of the IIMA

How come Open Science is a well-shared vision among research communities, while the prerequisite practice of research data management (RDM) is lagging? This research sheds light on RDM adoption in the Dutch context of universities of applied sciences, by studying influencing technological, organizational, and environmental factors using the TOE-framework. A survey was sent out to researchers of universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands. The analyses thereof showed no significant relation between the influencing factors and the intention to comply with the RDM guidelines (p-value of ≤ .10 and a 90% confidence level). Results did show a significant influence of …

Supporting Middle Grades Pre-Service Teachers In Building Professional Dispositions, Hilary Dack

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

Promoting pre-service teachers' development of professional dispositions through purposefully designed learning experiences may be middle level teacher education's most important contribution to a novice's development from student to teacher. The 2022 Revised Middle Level Teacher Preparation Standards explicitly address this expectation in Standard 5, with Component 5.d noting that middle grades pre-service teachers should become "continuous, collaborative learners who demonstrate knowledgeable, reflective, critical perspectives on their teaching." This article offers detailed illustrations of the approaches one middle grades teacher education program used to intentionally select professional dispositions to target in early coursework and teach those dispositions to candidates. Approaches included: …

Standing Up For Learning? Insights From Cognitive Science For Better Educational Practices, Mei Jiang, Shulan Lu Oct 2024

Standing Up For Learning? Insights From Cognitive Science For Better Educational Practices, Mei Jiang, Shulan Lu

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

Prolonged sitting is associated with higher health issues across all age groups, particularly affecting students’ classroom behaviors and academic achievement. In this paper, we review the psychological research on the relationship between posture and cognition, focusing on how students learn while sitting versus standing. Our findings show that there is no clear evidence favoring one posture over another in terms of cognitive outcomes. Meanwhile, studies highlight the health and physiological benefits of standing desks. Dynamic postural configurations can encourage movement and support collaboration among students and between students and teachers. Introducing standing desks to the K-12 classrooms could reduce health …

Teach Me How To Love: The Love Ethic As A Foundation For Liberatory Counseling Education, R. Danielle Scott

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

Centering social justice within the university classroom is essential for fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment and empowering students toward an orientation for social change. This article explores how interdisciplinary learning, grounded in bell hooks’ concept of the “love ethic” from All About Love, can enhance counseling education within the field of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS). The study focuses on a flexible-synchronous course designed for upper-level undergraduate students as an elective in the Communication Sciences and Disorders department at a predominantly White Midwestern public university. By integrating decolonized course content and a critical, inclusive pedagogical approach, the …

Pre-Connection Scan For Bluetooth Channel Map, Hp Inc Oct 2024

Pre-Connection Scan For Bluetooth Channel Map, Hp Inc

Defensive Publications Series

Bluetooth has become a cornerstone in wireless communication, especially within the peripheral ecosystem. Despite its widespread adoption, Bluetooth faces significant challenges, particularly in environments with high radio frequency interference. One of the primary issues is that Bluetooth needs to establish a connection before scanning for a clear transmission channel map, which adds an operational load and can impact performance.

Clear channels are critical for Bluetooth connections. However, current Bluetooth technology is limited because it can only scan for a clear channel map after establishing a connection. This post-connection scanning, such as Adaptive Frequency Hopping (AFH), will update the channel map …

Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction And Well-Being Among Seafarers: An Investigation Of Interaction Effects Through The Lens Of Self-Determination Theory, Nong Vuong Phi, Kung Don Ye, Feng Ming Tsai, Hsiao Chao Hsieh, Shiou-Yu Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Enhancing employee well-being is a primary goal for enterprise sustainable development. Although seafarers represent a major human resource in the maritime industry, the distinctive demands of their profession often compel them to compromise on certain elements in fulfilling their basic psychological needs, thereby contributing to mental health challenges. Recently, COVID-19 and its associated border control measures have prolonged the voyages of seafarers, drawing public attention to the topic of seafarer well-being. In this study, self-determination theory was used to explore the effects of autonomy, competence, and relatedness as fundamental psychological needs on seafarer well-being. After the independent effects of these …

Indigenous Peoples And Environmental Justice: Recognition, Rights, And Representation Of Indigenous Peoples In Bangladesh's Environmental Regulatory Framework, Nasrin Akter

LLM Theses

Using an Environmental Justice theoretical lens, this thesis explores the extent to which the environmental legislative landscape of Bangladesh has ensured environmental justice for Indigenous peoples. In doing so, the thesis concentrates on three main areas: recognition, rights of Indigenous people under the environmental legal framework as well as their representation in the environmental decision making bodies. The research evaluates Bangladesh environmental laws against standards elaborated in the environmental justice literature on each of these three areas. The research employs a combination of legal and policy analysis, as well as a critical analytical approach as part of its methodology. This …

No. 29: Translocal Households, Rural-Urban Links And Migrant Food Security In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera, Maria Salamone

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

This paper revisits the issue of rural-urban links in post-apartheid South Africa, challenging the assumption that the end of apartheid would lead to rapid urbanization and the dissolution of circular migration. Despite the abolition of influx controls and the significant increase in the urban population from 33% in 1980 to 55% in 2011 among black South Africans, rural-urban ties and flows have proven resilient. The persistence of circular migration is evident in the continuous flow of people, goods, and remittances between urban and rural areas. This paper draws on a survey of over 800 Eastern Cape migrants in Cape Town, …

Libraries Professional Work

ETDs in repositories are nothing new, but what do you do when starting from zero, and your institution has not actively collected or archived student ETDs?

This was the scenario at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Being a relatively new institution growing out of several smaller local colleges, the codification of administrative workflows as related to ETDs took the long trail.

This talk will discuss our approach to discovering our own uncollected content, engaging ProQuest as an unexpected partner, and going from zero to fairly complete in about a year.

The Challenge Of Legal Citation Systems, Joshua Levine Oct 2024

The Challenge Of Legal Citation Systems, Joshua Levine

Library Staff Online Writings

Mastering legal citation means understanding multiple citation systems. In addition to the Bluebook, fifty states produce fifty sets of laws, and each state decides how it wants its own materials to be cited. For case law, the Bluebook advises authors to use the West Reporter citations if available, but to add public domain citations if a state uses them. However, a state’s internal rules may require citation to the official state reports. All this creates a maze of rules that practitioners need to follow. Legal citation presents difficulties for law students that law librarians and instructors need to appreciate, so …

Clinical, Diagnostic, And Metabolic Characteristics Associated With Nephrolithiasis In The Black Women's Health Study, Maria D'Amico, Richard K. Babayan, David S. Wang, Shaun Wason, Yvette C. Cozier

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

Background/Objectives: Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) is a frequently occurring urologic condition resulting in significant patient morbidity and healthcare costs. Despite the higher prevalence of metabolic risk factors for nephrolithiasis among Black women, there have been few epidemiologic studies of kidney stones focusing on this group.

Methods: We describe demographic and health characteristics, diagnostics, and metabolic profiles of US Black women with self-reported kidney stones. The women were participants in the Black Women’s Health Study (BWHS), a large prospective cohort of US Black women (median age 38 years) begun in 1995.

Results: Among the 2750 BWHS participants who completed an online supplemental …
