The Significance Of Cannibalism, Panic, And Sanctuary In The Interactions Between Prey And Predator With A Stage Structure, Ahmed Sami Abdulghafour, Raid Kamel Naji Nov 2024

The Significance Of Cannibalism, Panic, And Sanctuary In The Interactions Between Prey And Predator With A Stage Structure, Ahmed Sami Abdulghafour, Raid Kamel Naji

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

This paper analyzes a novel prey-predator model that takes into account the predator's stage structure, cannibalism within the predator population, panicky behavior, and the existence of a sanctuary where the prey might hide from the predator. The Holling type II functional response is used in the predation process. The behavior of the identified fixed points of the proposed system has been closely analyzed. The analysis focuses on the local stability and potential bifurcations that could happen close to the system's fixed points. The Lyapunov function approach is used to investigate the fixed-point stability zone globally. Numerical simulations were run to …

Using Morning Meetings To Build Classroom Community, Erica Ekholm Nov 2024

Using Morning Meetings To Build Classroom Community, Erica Ekholm

Education Masters

Morning meetings are commonly used within elementary classrooms as a means to build and strengthen classroom communities. Grounded in constructivist theory, this study aims to determine if morning meetings impact elementary students’ feelings about their classroom community. To do this, surveys were administered to 19 third-grade students before and after they participated in morning meetings for a week. Responses from the surveys were coded and a t-test was conducted to determine if differences between the pre-survey and post-survey responses were statistically significant. Results from the analysis of the data indicate that morning meetings do impact a students’ sense of safety …

Recognition Or Refusal? Marginalized Identity Development In Passing And The Color Purple, Lee M. Kassay Nov 2024

Recognition Or Refusal? Marginalized Identity Development In Passing And The Color Purple, Lee M. Kassay

Theses & Honors Papers

The novels Passing by Nella Larsen and The Color Purple by Alice Walker both involve identity development in their black queer female protagonists, but previous scholarship has rarely discussed the works in tandem. Thus, I merge the discussion around these two works by analyzing them through the concept of G.W.F. Hegel's master-slave dialectic. Assessing how both protagonists participate in their relationships with their female love interests versus their male husbands shows the importance of mutual recognition in the development of identity.

Soil Biogeography And Community Assembly In Polar Regions, Jesse Jorna Nov 2024

Soil Biogeography And Community Assembly In Polar Regions, Jesse Jorna

Theses and Dissertations

The polar regions provide community ecologists with natural microcosms, that include reduced species diversity, steep environmental gradients and limited human perturbance. Soil biodiversity in the polar regions is poorly understood, and the driving forces behind community compositions can range in scale from glacial forces 20,000 years ago to the impact of a researcher's footstep. Here, we present the results of an investigation of the driving factors behind biodiversity in Arctic and Antarctic soils, with specific attention to the role of community assembly processes. We suggest a framework for investigating the effects of inter-bacterial community processes like facilitation and argue for …

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

Background and purpose

Despite comprehensive evidence that supports the utility of aphasia therapy in persons with chronic (≥6 months) stroke-induced aphasia, the amount of therapy provided to patients in the United States is typically far less than what is likely necessary to maximize recovery. Two potential contributors to this discrepancy are limited access to rehabilitation services due to the availability of providers and logistical difficulties with transportation. One way to increase access to aphasia therapy is to rely on telerehabilitation.

Methods

The TEleRehabilitation foR Aphasia (TERRA) trial is a prospective, randomized, rater-blinded, multicenter phase II non-inferiority trial to …

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in volcanic areas commonly exhibits high temperatures, concentrations of metals and CO2, and acidity, all of which could affect sensitive coastal ecosystems. Identifying and quantifying volcanic SGD is crucial yet challenging because the SGD might be both discrete, through fractured volcanic rock, and diffuse. At a volcanic area in the Philippines, the novel combination of satellite and drone-based thermal infrared remote sensing, ground-based fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing, and in situ thermal profiling in coastal sediment identified the multi-scale nature of SGD and quantified fluxes. We identified SGD across ∼30 km of coastline. The different approaches revealed …

We present a bottom-up marketing approach as a pathway to addressing the grand challenge of poverty and inequality for the marketing discipline. We derive this approach from the research stream on radically different contexts of subsistence marketplaces. Research on subsistence marketplaces has typically explored micro-level phenomena but also traversed upward and explained aggregate phenomena at higher levels. We present a conceptual framework to encapsulate general and granular elements of the bottom-up marketing approach. Study 1 demonstrates general elements of the framework through a retrospective examination of the global diffusion of a marketplace literacy program. Study 2 demonstrates the more granular …

Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy Presentation, Giovanna Tomassoni, Meredith Mackenzie Nov 2024

Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy Presentation, Giovanna Tomassoni, Meredith Mackenzie

Master's Projects

Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP) is a serious form of child abuse in which the perpetrator is typically the victim’s maternal caregiver. Assessing for MSBP can be very challenging for medical providers due to symptom mimicry and a dearth of information about the disorder. This Integrative Review seeks to shine a light on common symptomatology of MSBP and to make sure that providers leave it on the differential diagnosis until alternative diagnoses can effectively exclude it. A total of 240 records from online databases were reviewing for content, currency, and rigor. This search was narrowed to 10 records for in-depth …

Wildfires emit solid-state strongly absorptive brown carbon (solid S-BrC, commonly known as tar ball), critical to Earth's radiation budget and climate, but their highly variable light absorption properties are typically not accounted for in climate models. Here, we show that from a Pacific Northwest wildfire, over 90% of particles are solid S-BrC with a mean refractive index of 1.49 + 0.056i at 550 nm. Model sensitivity studies show refractive index variation can cause a ~200% difference in regional absorption aerosol optical depth. We show that ~50% of solid S-BrC particles from this sample uptake water above 97% relative humidity. We …

Exploring The Efficacy And Limitations Of Histogram-Based Fake Image Detection, Dirk Hölscher, Christoph Reich, Frank Gut, Martin Knahl, Nathan Clarke

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Generative image models pose challenges to image authenticity and trustworthiness, blurring the line between real and fake content. This paper addresses these concerns by proposing a histogram-based approach using pre-trained models (vgg16, ResNet50, Xception) to train classification networks for distinguishing real from generated images. Leveraging histograms derived from images, the method aims to accurately classify images as authentic or synthetic. Through experiments, the paper examines the effectiveness of the approach in mitigating the risks associated with fake contents widespread dissemination. Results demonstrate promising advancements in detecting image manipulation and preserving the integrity of visual information amidst the spread of generative …

Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs primarily known for their role in the chemical modification of other RNAs. Recent studies suggested that snoRNAs may play a broader role in anti-cancer treatments such as targeted therapies and immunotherapies. Despite these insights, the comprehensive landscape of snoRNA associations with drug response and immunotherapy outcomes remains unexplored. In this study, we identified 79,448 and 75,185 associations between snoRNAs and drug response using data from VAEN and CancerRxTissue, respectively. Additionally, we discovered 29,199 associations between snoRNAs and immune checkpoint genes and 47,194 associations between snoRNAs and immune cell infiltrations. Sixteen …

Most respiratory microbiome studies use amplicon sequencing due to high host DNA. Metagenomics sequencing offers finer taxonomic resolution, phage assessment, and functional characterization. We evaluated five host DNA depletion methods on frozen nasal swabs from healthy adults, sputum from people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF), and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) from critically ill patients. Median sequencing depth was 76.4 million reads per sample. Untreated nasal, sputum, and BAL had 94.1%, 99.2%, and 99.7% host reads, respectively. Host depletion effects varied by sample type, generally increasing microbial reads, species and functional richness; this was mediated by higher effective sequencing depth. Rarefaction curves showed …

Is Graph Convolution Always Beneficial For Every Feature? Nov 2024

Is Graph Convolution Always Beneficial For Every Feature?

Defensive Publications Series

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have demonstrated strong capabilities in processing structured data. While traditional GNNs typically treat each feature dimension equally during graph convolution, we raise an important question: \textit{Is the graph convolution operation equally beneficial for each feature?} If not, the convolution operation on certain feature dimensions can possibly lead to harmful effects, even worse than the convolution-free models. In prior studies, to assess the impacts of graph convolution on features, people proposed metrics based on feature homophily to measure feature consistency with the graph topology. However, these metrics have shown unsatisfactory alignment with GNN performance and have not …

The public knows about the importance of triage in the hospital emergency setting, but few are aware of this term in institutions of higher learning. Triage is simply matching students with priority order of resources most needed (Merriam Webster, 2023). Faculty can be the first line of defense or first responders in the classroom to provide students the help they need before escalation ensues. The focus of this article was to review the need for additional faculty training to ensure professors are part of students’ “network of care” (Sarraf, 2021). Disruptive student behavior is easy to detect in the classroom …
