The Impact Of Musical Background, Choral Conducting Training And Music Teaching Style On The Choral Warm-Up Philosophy And Practices Of Successful High School Choral Directors, Bradley C. Olesen Jun 2010

The Impact Of Musical Background, Choral Conducting Training And Music Teaching Style On The Choral Warm-Up Philosophy And Practices Of Successful High School Choral Directors, Bradley C. Olesen

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) Examine successful choral director beliefs about warm-ups and their successful practices in conducting warm-ups, and (b) examine the relationship of musical background, choral training and music teaching style of high school choral directors upon these beliefs and practices. Subjects were 365 high school choral directors from 28 states. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, multivariate analysis of variance and multiple regression. Results indicated choral director's beliefs and practices differ as a function of musical back-ground, demographic characteristics, choral conducting training, and music teaching styles. Specifically, warm-up beliefs were predicted by …

Trade And Geography In The Economic Origins Of Islam: Theory And Evidence, Stelios Michalopoulos, Alireza Naghavi, Giovanni Prarolo Jun 2010

Trade And Geography In The Economic Origins Of Islam: Theory And Evidence, Stelios Michalopoulos, Alireza Naghavi, Giovanni Prarolo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This research examines the economic origins of Islam and uncovers two empirical regularities. First, Muslim countries, virtual countries and ethnic groups, exhibit highly unequal regional agricultural endowments. Second, Muslim adherence is systematically larger along the pre-Islamic trade routes in the Old World. The theory argues that this particular type of geography (i) determined the economic aspects of the religious doctrine upon which Islam was formed, and (ii) shaped its subsequent economic performance. It suggests that the unequal distribution of land endowments conferred differential gains from trade across regions, fostering predatory behavior from the poorly endowed ones. In such an environment …

The Climatic Niche Diversity Of Malagasy Primates: A Phylogenetic Perspective, Jason M. Kamilar, Kathleen M. Muldoon Jun 2010

The Climatic Niche Diversity Of Malagasy Primates: A Phylogenetic Perspective, Jason M. Kamilar, Kathleen M. Muldoon

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

Numerous researchers have posited that there should be a strong negative relationship between the evolutionary distance among species and their ecological similarity. Alternative evidence suggests that members of adaptive radiations should display no relationship between divergence time and ecological similarity because rapid evolution results in near-simultaneous speciation early in the clade's history. In this paper, we performed the first investigation of ecological diversity in a phylogenetic context using a mammalian adaptive radiation, the Malagasy primates.

Methodology/Principal Findings:

We collected data for 43 extant species including: 1) 1064 species by locality samples, 2) GIS climate data for each sampling locality, …

  • UNLV has purchased weather equipment, established a weather station at the ranch, and has begun collecting weather data and conducting preliminary research. The station collects hourly data on temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, and insolation that is transmitted wirelessly to UNLV and captured and projected on the PLI WBR website. A database of weather information will be maintained for further analysis. Research quantifying solar insolation at the ranch will be conducted.
  • UNLV has begun preparing informational brochures that will be available to the public at the ranch in the future and will provide information on biology, geology, anthropology, and …

A Time To Choose: Finitude, Freedom, And Eternity In Dante's Commedia And Lewis's Great Divorce, Matthew Swift Jun 2010

A Time To Choose: Finitude, Freedom, And Eternity In Dante's Commedia And Lewis's Great Divorce, Matthew Swift

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016

Many scholars rightly note the use of Dantean imagery and ideas in The Great Divorce, but they do not focus primarily on the relationship between Lewis’s and Dante’s presentations of some central themes. Dante, like Lewis, is deeply concerned with human nature and decisions, especially as they relate to eternity. I propose that Lewis’s The Great Divorce presents views on the intertwining issues of finitude, freedom, and eternity, views which closely reflect those presented by Dante in his Commedia. An examination of each author’s full treatment of these three themes is beyond the scope of this paper, but …

Tooth Chipping Can Reveal The Diet And Bite Forces Of Fossil Hominins, Paul J. Constantino, James Jin-Wu Lee, Herzl Chai, Bernhard Zipfel, Charles Ziscovici, Brian R. Lawn, Peter W. Lucas Jun 2010

Tooth Chipping Can Reveal The Diet And Bite Forces Of Fossil Hominins, Paul J. Constantino, James Jin-Wu Lee, Herzl Chai, Bernhard Zipfel, Charles Ziscovici, Brian R. Lawn, Peter W. Lucas

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Mammalian tooth enamel is often chipped, providing clear evidence for localized contacts with large hard food objects. Here, we apply a simple fracture equation to estimate peak bite forces directly from chip size. Many fossil hominins exhibit antemortem chips on their posterior teeth, indicating their use of high bite forces. The inference that these species must have consumed large hard foods such as seeds is supported by the occurrence of similar chips among known modern-day seed predators such as orangutans and peccaries. The existence of tooth chip signatures also provides a way of identifying the consumption of rarely eaten foods …
