The Impact Of Religiosity On Parenting Behaviors In Latter-Day Saint Families, Steven Behling Jun 2010

The Impact Of Religiosity On Parenting Behaviors In Latter-Day Saint Families, Steven Behling

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined the impact of religiosity on self-reported frequency of specific parenting behaviors comprised within Baumrind's (1971) typology: authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. It also explored the relationship between religiosity and an aspect of parenting known as psychological control, characterized by such behaviors as personal attacks, erratic emotional behavior, guilt induction, and love withdrawal. These parenting behaviors were also examined in the context of parental education and gender. Unique to the study was the population of religious individuals surveyed, namely members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a group of religious individuals growing in number yet …

National Register Testing At 41bq285, Bosque County, Texas: Fm 56 Bridge Replacement At The North Bosque River, Timothy B. Griffith, Karl W. Kibler, Douglas K. Boyd

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Prewitt and Associates, Inc., conducted archeological test excavations at 41BQ285 in June 2006 for the Texas Department of Transportation under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 4102. Site 41BQ285, in southeastern Bosque County, was located during an archeological survey for the proposed replacement of the FM 56 bridge over the North Bosque River. It is a prehistoric campsite buried in a cumulic soil in the upper deposits of a late Holocene alluvial terrace. Mechanical excavations consisted of re-opening four backhoe trenches from the survey phase followed by hand excavation of six 1x1-m test units. This work identified three burned rock features and …

Management As A Contextual Practice: The Need To Blend Science, Skills And Practical Wisdom, Jon Billsberry, Andreas Birnik Jun 2010

Management As A Contextual Practice: The Need To Blend Science, Skills And Practical Wisdom, Jon Billsberry, Andreas Birnik

Organization Management Journal

This paper contributes to the debate regarding whether or not management is, or should become, a profession. Using the principles of dialectic logic, arguments for the thesis that management is a profession and the antithesis that management is more akin to an art or a craft are critically reviewed. Aristotle’s intellectual virtues episteme (science), techne (skills) and phronesis (practical wisdom) are introduced as a synthesis to this debate. Rather than characterizing management as a profession, it is argued that management is a contextual practice that requires a blend of all three intellectual virtues.

When Nurture Becomes Nature: Ethnocentrism In Studies Of Human Development, David F. Lancy Jun 2010

When Nurture Becomes Nature: Ethnocentrism In Studies Of Human Development, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This commentary will extend the territory claimed in the target article by identifying several other areas in the social sciences where findings from the WEIRD population have been over-generalized. An argument is made that the root problem is the ethnocentrism of scholars, textbook authors, and social commentators, which leads them to take their own cultural values as the norm.

Informal Institutions And Exclusion In Democratic Nepal, Mahendra Lawoti Jun 2010

Informal Institutions And Exclusion In Democratic Nepal, Mahendra Lawoti

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Informal institutions, or conventions or codes of behaviour, play significant role in constraining human behaviour that have important political consequences. Despite a lot of focus on institutionalism, informal institutions' role in political behaviours and outcomes has not been scrutinized thoroughly in political science. This paper investigates the contribution of informal institutions to the political exclusion of marginalized groups like Dalit, indigenous nationalities, Madhesi, and women in democratic Nepal (1990-2002). Scholars have pointed out the role of formal institutions like the unitary state, first past the post electoral method in the exclusion in Nepal. However, formal institutions do not account for …

Capitalism And Ethnicity Facing A Rising Wave Of Communism In Nepal, Mallika Shakya Jun 2010

Capitalism And Ethnicity Facing A Rising Wave Of Communism In Nepal, Mallika Shakya

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

The difference of vocations between various cultural groups and its implications for economic differentials are aspects that have grave imprints on political and social movements, yet these have been largely ignored by economists, anthropologists and political scientists. On the one hand, business elites are the biggest beneficiaries of economic and social change; and on the other hand, they are known for their cold adherence to monetary calculations which leaves them one of the biggest obstacles when it comes to ushering any forms of social change. Although the pragmatic forces defining this class group speaks for the way they tend to …

"Virtuous Beings": The Concept Of Tha Damtshig And Being A Moral Person In Contemporary Bhutanese Society, Richard Whitecross Jun 2010

"Virtuous Beings": The Concept Of Tha Damtshig And Being A Moral Person In Contemporary Bhutanese Society, Richard Whitecross

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This paper examines the concept of tha damtshig (highest vow). Based on Buddhist teachings, the concept of tha damtshig plays an important part in Bhutanese society. After a brief discussion of Buddhist doctrines that shape the concept of tha damtshig, the paper considers how the concept shapes everyday understandings of moral values and conduct, its transmission and more recently the subtle political use of it to define loyalty to the state.

Spirituality As A Life Line: Women Living With Hiv/Aids And The Role Of Spirituality In Their Support System, Jennifer L. Peterson, Malynnda A. Johnson, Kelly E. Tenzek

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

For many women living with HIV/AIDS, incorporating spirituality into their lives helps them organize their experience, empower self-reconstruction, and manage stigma. (Stanley, 1999). Because of the potential relationship of spirituality and social support, the specific aim of this study is to examine the role of spirituality in the support experiences of women living with HIV or AIDS. In this case, spirituality or a connection to God, offered the women an opportunity to develop meaning and perspective taking, to have a source of support, to provide control through a more powerful being, and to offer a path to community.

Rescued, Rehabilitated, Returned: Institutional Approaches To The Rehabilitation Of Survivors Of Sex Trafficking In India And Nepal, Robynne A. Locke Jun 2010

Rescued, Rehabilitated, Returned: Institutional Approaches To The Rehabilitation Of Survivors Of Sex Trafficking In India And Nepal, Robynne A. Locke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite participating in rehabilitation programs, many survivors of sex trafficking in India and Nepal are re-trafficked, ‘voluntarily’ re-enter the sex industry, or become traffickers or brothel managers themselves. This thesis discusses the challenges of institutional rehabilitation from a critical theory perspective. Drawing from three months of participant observation, interviews, and focus groups with rehabilitation professionals, this thesis will show that there has been a recent, positive shift in the discourse of survivor rehabilitation at the institutional level. However, a focus on individual rather than holistic change, the structure of the rehabilitation process, and a lack of assessment tools has made …

Susceptibility Modeling And Mission Flight Route Optimization In A Low Threat, Combat Environment, Brett J. Machovina Jun 2010

Susceptibility Modeling And Mission Flight Route Optimization In A Low Threat, Combat Environment, Brett J. Machovina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Movement and transportation systems are a primary topic in the study of humans and their relationship with the environment. Only a few modes of transportation allow for nearly full freedom of movement that is unconstrained by rigid nodes and networks. Individual human travel (walking, climbing, swimming, etc.) is one example while rotorcraft travel is another. Although other criteria constrain movement, independence from a network allows for a unique examination of human spatial decision-making and choice behavior. This research analyzes helicopter flight route planning in a low threat combat environment with respect to geography. The particular problem addressed, which ultimately concerns …
