School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Background: Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS) is an effective sampling strategy to recruit hard-to-reach populations but the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the use of this strategy in the collection of data involving human subjects, particularly among marginalized and vulnerable populations, is not known. Based on an ongoing study using RDS to recruit and study the interactions between HIV infection, injection drug use, and the microbiome in Puerto Rico, this paper explores the e􀀀ectiveness of RDS during the pandemic and provided potential strategies that could improve recruitment and data collection.

Results: RDS was employed to evaluate its effectiveness …

Academic And Social Acculturation Experiences Of Underschooled Latin American English Learners: A Phenomenological Study, Deborah Kay Blackledge Oct 2022

Academic And Social Acculturation Experiences Of Underschooled Latin American English Learners: A Phenomenological Study, Deborah Kay Blackledge

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the acculturation experiences of underschooled Latin American English Learners (ELs) in a secondary school in the southern part of the United States. The underschooled ELs are defined as English learners ranging in ages from 13-17 years old who have come from another country in Latin America within a three-year time span having three years or less of educational schooling in their native country. The sampling size for this study consisted of eight EL students in grades seventh through tenth grade. The subsequent central question guided the study: What are the …

Perceptions And Utilization Of A Multimedia Teaching Strategy To Prevent Student Nurse Attrition, Lorretta Krautscheid, Pamela Fifer, Rebecca Hernandez, Taryn Blum Oct 2022

Perceptions And Utilization Of A Multimedia Teaching Strategy To Prevent Student Nurse Attrition, Lorretta Krautscheid, Pamela Fifer, Rebecca Hernandez, Taryn Blum

Faculty Publications - College of Nursing

Untethered Lecture Capture (ULC) is a teaching method facilitating student classroom engagement while simultaneously creating audiovisual lecture capture (LC) resources. This single-site, convergent parallel mixed-methods study qualitatively described how nursing students with attrition risk factors perceived ULC influenced learning and quantified how such students utilized LC. Study participants (N = 28) reported watching most LC resources (57.1%) and 42.9% watched entire LC videos from start to finish. Qualitative findings produced new evidence about untethered faculty proximity in the classroom and ULC techniques supporting in-class focus and post-class self-paced learning efficiencies. Findings help nurse educators prioritize instructional methods among students with …

Speciation Jigsaw Activity, Erika Crispo Oct 2022

Speciation Jigsaw Activity, Erika Crispo

Open Educational Resources

What is a species? Why are there so many species on the planet? The question of why we have different species of organisms was the key thesis of Charles Darwin’s most famous book, On the Origin of Species. While several definitions of what constitutes a species exists, the most common definition lies within thebiological species concept. This concept states that different species exist when two individuals of different sexes are unable to reproduce with one another to yield viable offspring in the wild. A major limitation of this definition is that it can only be applied to sexually reproducing organisms that …

A Country Strange And Far: The Methodist Church In The Pacific Northwest, 1834–1918, Benjamin L. Hartley Oct 2022

A Country Strange And Far: The Methodist Church In The Pacific Northwest, 1834–1918, Benjamin L. Hartley

SPU Works

The Methodist mission to the Pacific Northwest that began in 1834 was a defining venture for the Methodist Episcopal Church’s new mission society, which had been established in 1820. No missionary destination in the first generation of the Mission Society received more attention – in terms of both financial support and personnel – than the Oregon mission. This fact alone makes Michael McKenzie’s book a welcome addition to the historical literature concerning Christianity in the Pacific Northwest. The book’s analysis is not limited to the first generation of Methodist work in the region. McKenzie’s aims are more ambitious. He examines …

The Expansionist Cause: Union Civil War Commemorations As Weapons Of Colonization In The American West, Lindsey Peterson Oct 2022

The Expansionist Cause: Union Civil War Commemorations As Weapons Of Colonization In The American West, Lindsey Peterson

Dissertations

Eastern collective remembrances of the American Civil War have dominated discussions of the war’s causes and consequences. The West was located far from major Civil War battlefields and historic sites and therefore deemed peripheral to the war and its legacy. Consequently, historians’ eastern-focused arguments about the war’s historical memory have largely been applied to account for all Union veterans and their families’ experiences, even though the evidence is grounded predominantly in source materials from east of the Mississippi River. Using analytical methods of gender and race, The Expansionist Cause examines Union Civil War commemoration in the trans-Mississippi West to argue …

Mapping Unexploded Ordnance In Syria: Harnessing The Power Of Open-Source Information, Hampton Stall, Jennifer Hudson, Evan Leendertse, Hari Prasad, Chris Mcnaboe, Rana Shabb, Jonathan Robinson Oct 2022

Mapping Unexploded Ordnance In Syria: Harnessing The Power Of Open-Source Information, Hampton Stall, Jennifer Hudson, Evan Leendertse, Hari Prasad, Chris Mcnaboe, Rana Shabb, Jonathan Robinson

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

For over a decade, the widespread use of explosive weapons by all sides in the Syrian conflict has been well documented by a litany of public sources. Many of these explosive munitions fail to detonate as intended, thereby becoming unexploded ordnance (UXO) that threaten post-conflict recovery. To begin the process of clearing these explosive remnants of war (ERW), desk studies/non-technical studies can be utilized to initially assess the concentration and distribution of explosive weapons across a conflict zone, which in turn suggest the risk of UXO in an area. Traditional methods in non-technical surveys (NTS) focus on unweighted conflict intensity …

Black Capitalists In The Transatlantic Financial Industry, Rachel Laryea Oct 2022

Black Capitalists In The Transatlantic Financial Industry, Rachel Laryea

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation is a study on the motivations and practices of willful Black participation in capitalism in the contemporary moment. With two sites of inquiry, Wall Street in New York City and Accra, Ghana, this ethnographic study examines how, and to what effect Black Capitalists successfully navigate financial institutions shaped by structural racism and covert inequality. I also track and assess the afterlives of Black professionals who leave Wall Street with an entrepreneurial posture as they sojourn across the Atlantic to create financial institutions of their own in Ghana. This migratory phenomenon is shaped in part by Ghana’s pivotal 2019 …

The Right Stuff: Material Culture, Comfort, And The Making Of Explorers, 1820-1940, Sarah Mendoza Pickman Oct 2022

The Right Stuff: Material Culture, Comfort, And The Making Of Explorers, 1820-1940, Sarah Mendoza Pickman

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This is a dissertation about unpacking packing. It uses the things that British and American explorers packed for their journeys as a lens for understanding how ideas of comfort shaped Anglophone exploration, colonialism, and capitalism in the long nineteenth century. It starts with a group of seemingly mundane objects that were ubiquitous in the packing lists of these explorers, like chocolate, raincoats, and tents. Tracing these objects from raw material to consumer commodity, the dissertation argues that explorers made these items essential for their comfort in “extreme” environments. In doing so, they naturalized concepts of physical and psychological comfort that …

The Optics Of Hatred: Visualizing The Vietnamese Other In Cambodia, Ngoc Tram Luong Oct 2022

The Optics Of Hatred: Visualizing The Vietnamese Other In Cambodia, Ngoc Tram Luong

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Informed by scholarship on the phenomenon of anti-Vietnamese violence and discrimination in Cambodia, this dissertation probes the construction of Vietnamese Otherness throughout Cambodian history and its imprints upon the lived reality of an eclectic population colloquially dubbed Yuon. It investigates the ways diverse groups of people identified as Vietnamese, either by themselves or others, can be construed within a Khmer ethno-nationalist discourse as the source of sociopolitical troubles—enemies from within, invaders of Cambodian land, strangers in our midst—that threaten the stability and survival of the Cambodian nation. This multilayered way of seeing has inspired waves of genocidal violence against the …

Diminished Citizens: Reproductive Sovereignty Through Historical Memory And Health Data In Peru, 1995-2006, Emilie E. Egger Oct 2022

Diminished Citizens: Reproductive Sovereignty Through Historical Memory And Health Data In Peru, 1995-2006, Emilie E. Egger

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation brings together key moments of reproductive violence inflicted on Indigenous Peruvian women between 1995 and 2002 and their relationship to the Peruvian State’s Programa Nacional de Salud Reproductiva y Planificación Familiar (PNSRPF). Each chapter focuses on how the violent constraining of Indigenous Peruvian women’s reproduction through PNSRPF linked that campaign to longstanding patterns of reproductive violence against Indigenous Peruvians. It argues these events are connected through reproductive sovereignty as produced by public health data and historical memory. Reproductive sovereignty explains how the Peruvian state has coerced, restricted, and neglected the reproduction of Indigenous Peruvian women who it has …

Paleoenvironmental Context Of Early Stone Age Archaeology: An Analysis Of The Gona Fauna Between ~3 And 1 Ma., Amanda Christie Leiss Oct 2022

Paleoenvironmental Context Of Early Stone Age Archaeology: An Analysis Of The Gona Fauna Between ~3 And 1 Ma., Amanda Christie Leiss

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The advent of tool-making has long been associated with expanding grasslands in Africa. My dissertation reconstructs paleoenvironments at Gona, in the Afar region of Ethiopia, between ~3–1 Ma (1) to make inferences about how hominins were utilizing the paleo-landscape and interacting with mammalian communities and (2) to investigate whether the environment was influential in the development of stone tools. This time period spans the origin of our genus Homo and the evolution of Homo erectus, and it provides evidence of increased behavioral complexity (stone tools), brain expansion, and the acquisition of large nutrient-rich food sources (animal carcasses). Because of the …

The Resurgence Of The Nuu-Chah-Nulth First Nations In The Clayoquot Sound Bio-Cultural Landscape: A Case Study Of Iisaak Forest Resources, Ltd., Cintra Cady Agee Oct 2022

The Resurgence Of The Nuu-Chah-Nulth First Nations In The Clayoquot Sound Bio-Cultural Landscape: A Case Study Of Iisaak Forest Resources, Ltd., Cintra Cady Agee

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The Central Region Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations (NCN) are an alliance of five First Nations: the Ahousaht, the Tla-o-qui-aht, the Hesquiaht, the Toquaht, and the Ucluelet. Their traditional territories cover the central west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia (BC)—known as Clayoquot Sound. Industrial logging concessionaires had clearcut much of the ‘old-growth’ forests in Clayoquot. These were public lands, and multiple forest values important to multiple stakeholders had been reduced. In 1984, the NCN obtained a logging injunction for Meares Island in Clayoquot Sound. The NCN publicly protested for additional curbs on logging in their traditional territories. In the early 1990s, …

Biobehavioral Markers Of Social-Emotional Functioning, Erica Ho Oct 2022

Biobehavioral Markers Of Social-Emotional Functioning, Erica Ho

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Difficulties with social and emotional functioning characterize most major psychiatric disorders and exert outsize influence on treatment prognosis and quality of life, evincing a pressing public health concern that necessitates closer investigation. In recognition of the diverse pathways through which social contexts interact with social-emotional functioning and psychopathology, the three studies that form this dissertation deliberately span a range of topics, methods, and populations, with the goal of characterizing individual differences in the perception of social-emotional signals across a range of increasingly complex social settings. Study 1 (presented in Chapter 2) uses functional magnetic resonance imaging in an adult community …

Imagining A Crisis: Human-Environmental Relations In North And South American Law And Literature, Joseph Hamilton Oct 2022

Imagining A Crisis: Human-Environmental Relations In North And South American Law And Literature, Joseph Hamilton

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation is about the creation of a new environmental imagination. Under the pressure of ecological crisis, dominant ways of distinguishing nature and society have faltered, and struggles for environmental justice have articulated demands for a biocentric, anti-colonial approach to environmental governance. I show how such an ideological transition might be accomplished in the areas of law and literature, two crucial sources of new environmental worldviews and norms. My focus is on novels and jurisprudence that deal with ongoing environmental struggles: in the United States West, I look to William Vollmann’s The Dying Grass (2015), Leslie Marmon Silko’s Almanac of …

State Of Denial: Aids Denialism, Treatment Activism, And The Fight Over Antiretrovirals, Lindsay Zafir Oct 2022

State Of Denial: Aids Denialism, Treatment Activism, And The Fight Over Antiretrovirals, Lindsay Zafir

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation puts gender and sexuality at the center of transnational contests over the meaning of biomedical citizenship in the late 20th century. State of Denial tracks the loose coalition of gay activists, HIV-positive mothers, libertarians, scientists, and South African officials that formed around the idea that AIDS is caused by promiscuous sex, poverty, and drug use, including antiretrovirals, rather than HIV. AIDS denialism emerged amidst a radical transformation in the boundaries of expertise, spurred by the women’s health, gay liberation, and alternative medicine movements; New Left counter-culturalism and anti-capitalism; right-wing anti-statism; the rise of the internet; and the politics …
