Impact Of Globalisation On Religious Tourism: The Case Of Vrindavan, India, Charlie Gupta, Ridhu Dhan Gahalot

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The term ‘religious tourism’ refers to travel that is primarily inspired by spiritual beliefs (Smith, 2012). It serves as one of humanity’s oldest religious practices as well as one of the earliest examples of tourism (Timothy, 2011). Due in the main to the numerous sacred places that are dispersed throughout its vast geographic area, India, which is known for its rich heritage and culture, has attracted attention from throughout the world (Eck, 2011; Singh, 2013). Religious Tourism In An Atheistic Society: The Example Of The Czech Republic, Ivo Jirásek, Tereza Štěrbová Jan 2024

Religious Tourism In An Atheistic Society: The Example Of The Czech Republic, Ivo Jirásek, Tereza Štěrbová

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

For a more accurate understanding of religious tourism, it is useful to distinguish between faith-based tourism, spiritual tourism and tourism in religious spaces. The former is characterized by religious faith (and processes of hierophany), the next by spirituality and transcendence experience, while the latter remains in the secular realm of experience. Based on this conceptual grasp, the paper presents the situation in the highly secular Czech Republic and investigates the opinions of service and offer providers in this type of tourism through interviews (n = 3). A comparison with the demand and preferences of tourism participants was collected through an …

Earth Art In The Great Acceleration: Times/Counter-Times, Monuments/Counter-Monuments, Gary Shapiro Jan 2024

Earth Art In The Great Acceleration: Times/Counter-Times, Monuments/Counter-Monuments, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

This article attempts to situate land art in the deserts of the US Southwest in terms of the works’ relation to and rupture with more traditional genres (seventeenth to twentieth centuries) of parks, gardens, and landscape architecture. It argues that the earlier works provide implicit answers to questions concerning Earth’s meaning and offer models of flourishing habitation. In contrast, the more recent works, all constructed in the era of the great acceleration (the Anthropocene), pose questions having to do with new challenges posed by climate change and the devastation of the Earth.

Are The Church Fathers Relevant In A 21st Century Inculturated And Contextualized Asian Theology?, Emmanuel C. Marfori

Landas

Is Patristics still relevant in the 21st century? This paper examines the decline of Patristic studies in the 19th–20th centuries and their brief revival before Vatican II, followed by a postconciliar downturn. It proposes that the Church Fathers remain vital for theology today, especially in Asia, where faith and culture intersect in inculturation. As witnesses to Tradition, the Fathers offer models for contextual theological reflection. The paper highlights Tertullian’s Adversus Marcionem, where he defends the unity of Scripture through the Transfiguration. Two key terms—contubernium (friendship) and repromissio (fulfillment of promise)—are translated into Tagalog as pagkakaibigan and katuparan ng pangako, bridging …

The Gospel Of Hope: Exploring The Theological Core Of The Jubilee Year 2025, Ramil Del Rosario Marcos

Landas

The Catholic Church will celebrate the Holy Year 2025 under the motto “Pilgrims of Hope,” emphasizing renewal and healing after the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper highlights the importance of Christian hope, often the least explored among the theological virtues, and turns to Pope Francis’ reflections as a key resource. Focusing on his weekly addresses from 2016–2017, it examines his theology of hope and its relevance for individuals, the Church, and the wider world. During the pandemic, Pope Francis embodied compassionate leadership, encouraging perseverance through faith in God and trust in human solidarity. His reflections present hope as rooted in the …

Georges Didi-Huberman's “Politics Of Images” And His Debate With Jacques Rancière On The Pathos Of Images, Xueyang Jiang Jan 2024

Georges Didi-Huberman's “Politics Of Images” And His Debate With Jacques Rancière On The Pathos Of Images, Xueyang Jiang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Georges Didi-Huberman's image theory maintains strong sensitivity to current social politics. Since his exhibition “Uprising”, Didi-Huberman has been making visual anthropological analysis of people's gestures of rebellion and considering images as an endowment of human desire. Pathos and imagination are two key perspectives through which Didi-Huberman's image theory enters politics, but Jacques Rancière questions his interpretation of the pathos dimension of images. In turn, Didi-Huberman clarifies Rancière's misunderstanding by tracing the philosophical origins of the concept while emphasizing its traumatic nature of passivity. In addition, he rethinks Rancière's key concept of the politics of aesthetics, “the distribution of sensible,” from …

The “Theoretical Turn” Of Fictionality Studies And The Trend Of Contemporary Western Research On Fictionality, Danhong Cao Jan 2024

The “Theoretical Turn” Of Fictionality Studies And The Trend Of Contemporary Western Research On Fictionality, Danhong Cao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Since the 1980s, the question of fictionality has been a major focus of Western scholarship. A variety of theoretical and methodological approaches have emerged, among which the most representative are the works of Thomas Pavel, Kendall Walton, Genette, Marie-Laure Ryan, Lubomír Dolezel, Dorrit Cohn, and Jean-Marie Schaeffer. Studies of fictionality can be divided into three categories: studies of the internal such as ontological and formalist methods, studies of the external such as those adopting the perspectives of pragmatics and cognitive science, and research that combines these two approaches. These studies have shaped the primary orientations and tendencies in the study …

The effects of climate change depend on specific local circumstances, posing a challenge for worldwide research to comprehensively encompass the diverse impacts on various local social-ecological systems. Here we use a place-specific but cross-culturally comparable protocol to document climate change indicators and impacts as locally experienced and analyze their distribution. We collected first-hand data in 48 sites inhabited by Indigenous Peoples and local communities and covering all climate zones and nature-dependent livelihoods. We documented 1,661 site-agreed reports of change corresponding to 369 indicators. Reports of change vary according to climate zone and livelihood activity. We provide compelling evidence that climate …

Associating Academic Identity With Language Socialization In Virtual Community: A Case Study Of A Chinese Graduate Student’S Learning Experiences In Religion Studies, Xiaolong Lu

The Qualitative Report

This longitudinal case study explored the academic identity and language socialization of a Chinese graduate student enrolled in an online religion course at a U.S. university during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected via online classroom observations, oral interviews, and artifacts. The theoretical framework was taken from language socialization and identity, together with positioning theory. The study differs from previous research, arguing that instead of language competence, the constructed academic identity is occasionally crucial for the successful academic discourse socialization of international students in bilingual and virtual settings. Moreover, the inclination toward interactive positioning between students and instructors can arise …

The Practical Application Of Biblical Theology To Christian Apologetics, Matthew T. Johnson Jan 2024

The Practical Application Of Biblical Theology To Christian Apologetics, Matthew T. Johnson

Liberty Theological Review

Many Christians are skeptical regarding the practical relevance of theology for the common believer. Exploring how the subdiscipline of biblical theology can be applied can effectively dispel this misconception. In particular, the apologetic applications of biblical theology’s primary deliverances underscore the relevance theology has to the average Christian. Given the growing need for effective Christian apologetics, it would be wise for the Church to further explore biblical theology and to incorporate it into the defense of Christianity. Existing scholarship has largely overlooked biblical theology’s apologetic potential. Thus, there is a need to explore this relationship for the benefit of the …
