Kierkegaard, The Lost Evangelical, Armen Oganessian Jan 2024

Kierkegaard, The Lost Evangelical, Armen Oganessian

Liberty Theological Review

In this article, we will argue that the thinker, Søren Kierkegaard, should be associated with Evangelicalism. We will first define Evangelicalism through its distinctives, arguing that it has four distinctives: (1) Its emphasis on a Christian’s “rebirth” being the central moment in their spiritual life, (2) an epistemological emphasis on the Bible, (3) an outspoken presence in the public square, and (4) evangelism. After doing so, we will demonstrate that Kierkegaard exhibits all four of these distinctives. We will do so by utilizing a biographical reading of his works. Central to which is an understanding of Easter 1848 as a …

Barley As A Human Companion Species - Exploring The Relationship Between Barley And North Atlantic Peoples: 4000 Bc – Ad 1200, Chloe Combs

Theses and Dissertations

Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is an ancient cereal crop originating in the Fertile Crescent approximately 12,000 years ago and is presently one of the most important cereal crops globally. Barley has a long and complex history. This thesis aims to explore one dimension of this history through the lens of human companion species using archaeobotanical data collected from the islands of the North Atlantic from the Neolithic (4,000 BC) to the Norse period (AD 1200).

Can Wildlife Mortality On A Local Road Tell Something General? An Answer From A Protected Area In South-Western Romania, Diana Cupşa, Severus Daniel Covaciu Marcov, Robert Liviu Mihai Rengle, Amalia Raluca Dumbrava, Sára Ferenti, Adriana Petruş Vancea

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Between June 2020 and May 2021, we studied the fauna road mortality on a recently asphalted local road in a protected area in southwestern Romania (Iron Gates Natural Park–IGNP). Despite our expectation of reduced road mortality because of the very low traffic (3.97 cars/hour), numerous animals belonging to a high number of taxa were killed. Animals were killed throughout the entire year, even amphibians in the winter months, which normally should hibernate in that period. Road mortality differences between periods and sectors were obvious. Plant assemblages near the road influence the composition and intensity of road mortality. Diverse habitats near …

The Ktisis Of The Early Christian Kourion: The Cosmic Symbolism Of The Mosaics In The House Of Eustolios And The Emergence Of Christian Kourion, Clay Carpenter

Doctoral Dissertations

This 2024 Doctor of Philosophy with a Concentration in Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology dissertation at Lipscomb University discusses how the fourth and fifth centuries AD comprise a crucial transitional period in the history of Western Civilization. With the legalization and triumph of Christianity, the Roman Imperial world was, in time, entirely transfigured in all sectors of human life – the religious, the social, the political, and the economic. For the archaeologist in particular, the changes to the configuration and orientation of the urban space of the classical cities that abundantly dotted the shores of the Eastern Mediterranean are high upon …

Open Access Fund Publications

Introduction: Despite the value of clinical competencies for masters- and doctoral-level practitioners as well as the tremendous variability in preparedness for graduate school and at graduation from graduate school, there are no competency standards for students pursuing mental healthcare careers prior to graduate study. This study aimed to identify potential pre-mental health competency standards for undergraduates pursuing mental healthcare careers.

Methods: Faculty at masters and doctoral programs in a range of mental healthcare fields were asked to rate their expectations of entry-level competence and the perceived entry-level competence of their first-year, bachelor-level graduate students on 42 sub-competencies derived from the …

Knowing what happens over time to the lifeways of people in contemporary small-scale non-industrial societies of the rural Global South matters because it helps assess changes in the quality of life of underrepresented groups. It has been hard to answer the question because longitudinal information is rarely collected in such settings. A longitudinal dataset of nine years (2002–2010) from a horticultural-foraging society of Indigenous People in the Bolivian Amazon (Tsimane’) is used for an exploratory analysis of micro-level trends in indicators of well-being and economic inequalities. We selected 13 Tsimane’ villages (from ∼ 100) that varied in proximity to town …

Document Productivity Cycle (Study Case Of Samudera Raksa Ship Museum), Ciwuk Musiana Yudhawasthi, Lydia Christiani

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The study aims to discuss document productivity in the case of the Samudera Raksa Ship Museum. To answer this, the researchers made a productivity document study based on (1) Blasius Sudarsono's axiom, which states that "In the beginning, it was the human will to express what he thought and/or felt;" (2) Sudarsono's thoughts regarding documents as processes and products; (3) Lund’s concept of document creation; (4) Sabine Roux's thoughts on the rhizome concept in the document productivity process; and (5) the concept of museum communication by Yudhawasthi. Based on these theoretical frameworks, an analysis of the document productivity in the …

Mystical Experience As Situated In Rulla’S Three Dimensions Of Self-Transcendent Consistency Theory, Michael C. Porcia Jan 2024

Mystical Experience As Situated In Rulla’S Three Dimensions Of Self-Transcendent Consistency Theory, Michael C. Porcia

Landas

Mystical experience does not happen in a vacuum. It is a mediated experience taking into consideration the nature and context of the human person. This is God’s respect for human freedom. However, spiritual transcendence is premised by the psychological constitution of the person, conscious and unconscious. Hence, there are degrees of freedom. L. Rulla’s self-consistency theory situates freedom for self-transcendence according to three dimensions within a continuum. With this framework, mystical experience is evaluated according to the dialectical dynamic between needs and values in each dimension. And the Ignatian discernment of spirits becomes the lens by which to sift through …

All-Under-Heaven A New Vision For Proclaiming Christ In Chinese Culture, Fang Hua Jan 2024

All-Under-Heaven A New Vision For Proclaiming Christ In Chinese Culture, Fang Hua

Landas

This study explores the concept of “all-under-Heaven” as a framework for proclaiming Christ within Chinese culture. It employs the Pastoral Cycle method from the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), integrating historical- theological analysis. The research emphasizes the need for inculturating the Gospel within the Chinese notion of “all-under-Heaven” to address the societal impacts of Marxism, Leninism, and Mao-Zedong-Thought. By examining the Chinese ideal of Great Unity (Da Tong) and the Judeo-Christian tradition of a heavenly God, the study proposes that “all-under-Heaven” can serve as a theological foundation for harmony and the unity of humanity under divine principles. The research …

The Biblical Foundations Of The Marian Title Solace Of Migrants And Its Potential For Pastoral Encounter With Migrants, Refugees, And Internally Displaced Persons, Vince Henry M. Salles Jan 2024

The Biblical Foundations Of The Marian Title Solace Of Migrants And Its Potential For Pastoral Encounter With Migrants, Refugees, And Internally Displaced Persons, Vince Henry M. Salles

Landas

This article examines the biblical foundations of the Marian title “Solace of Migrants,” added to the Litany of Loreto by Pope Francis in 2020. It highlights two key New Testament passages: the Holy Family’s journey to Bethlehem (Lk 2:1–7) and the Flight into Egypt (Mt 2:13–15). In these narratives, Mary, together with Joseph and Jesus, is portrayed as a migrant who experiences displacement, hardship, and uncertainty in a foreign land. As such, she stands in solidarity with migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons today. The article argues that this title underscores a central pastoral priority of Pope Francis: care for …

Digital Divide In Rural Native American Homes: A Student Perspective, Chad R. Fenner, Cherie Noteboom, Omar El-Gayar

Research & Publications

Native American homes located in rural western North Dakota have seen increased availability of broadband and fiber optic Internet but continue to have low access numbers. Native American homes in the region located outside population centers continue to have difficulty accessing the Internet. Many households continue to struggle with economic factors compounded by the cost of a device to access the Internet for personal, educational, or employment use. A qualitative study with semi-structured interviews and the grounded theory method investigated the Native American home environment. Interviews were conducted with Native American students attending a state university with insight into diverse …

How I Became A Food Historian: Looking Back On All Manners Of Food, Stephen Mennell

European Journal of Food Drink and Society

The author’s book All Manners of Food was published in 1985 and was well received by historians and (to a lesser extent) by sociologists. In this essay, he reflects on how, having begun his academic career mainly as a sociological theorist, he came to write a large book about the history of food in England and France. In particular, he traces his intellectual debt, in writing this book, to Norbert Elias.

Utilizing Culturally Responsive Strategies To Inspire African American Female Participation In Cybersecurity, Deanna Bailey, Michel Kornegay, Ladawn Partlow, Charnee Bowens, Karen Gareis, Kevin Kornegay

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The number of African American females participating in cyber fields is significantly low. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education requires a new approach to student engagement to increase African American female participation in cybersecurity. The most common approach to engaging more African American females in STEM is to provide students access to professional images or role models active in STEM; however, more is needed. More race-centered strategies beyond role modeling are necessary to attract and retain African American females in STEM. Research studies show that integrating personal experiences and making cultural connections can help improve student participation in STEM …

“These Are Our Saints:” A Lourdes Shrine, The St. Coletta School For Exceptional Children, And The Catholic Remaking Of Cognitive Disability, Andrew Walker-Cornetta

Religion

This chapter appears from the book American Patroness: Marian Shrines and the Making of US Catholicism by Katherine Dugan and Karen E. Park, Editors.

"'These Are Our Saints:' A Lourdes Shrine, the St. Coletta School for Exceptional Children, and the Catholic Remaking of Cognitive Disability" focuses on a Lourdes shrine on the campus of what was once perhaps the most celebrated institution in the United States for persons with cognitive disabilities. It takes this site as a window onto mid-twentieth century Catholic efforts to re-imagine cognitive difference and highlights the importance of Marian devotional grammars to those efforts.

Augustine's Analogy: How To Say God, Eric Kalimbiriro Osc Jan 2024

Augustine's Analogy: How To Say God, Eric Kalimbiriro Osc

Obsculta

Augustine's analogy of the Trinity regards the question of how to speak about God. Augustine maintained that human language and material images are limited in their ability to wholly capture the essence of God, who is beyond human comprehension. He understood that the language we use to describe God is necessarily metaphorical and analogical, as we cannot fully grasp the transcendent nature of the divine. By using analogy, Augustine aimed to help his audiences come to some rudimentary understanding of the Trinity. This paper argues that Augustine's use of analogy provides a persuasive approach for understanding the Trinity. It focuses …

To Till And To Keep: Following The Ethical Imperative To Care For Creation Through Gender Exploration And Expression, Phoebe Carstens

Obsculta

In light of the recent USCCB document regarding 'the Moral Limits to Technological Manipulation of the Human Body,' this essay explores an alternative, transgender-affirming ethical framework drawn from Pope Francis's Laudato si’. Within this framework, gender-affirming care is presented as fulfilling the call to care for creation through exploration and cultivation of the self.
