Identifying Barriers To Mental Health Services Utilization For Black Youth In The United States: A Qualitative Study, Emily Stein, Matthew Hutnyan, Neely Myers Jan 2024

Identifying Barriers To Mental Health Services Utilization For Black Youth In The United States: A Qualitative Study, Emily Stein, Matthew Hutnyan, Neely Myers

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

Mental health in Black communities and racial/ethnic disparities in mental health service utilization remain growing concerns. Evidence suggests that psychotic disorders may be more prevalent among Black individuals than white individuals and the Black community faces barriers to care that can negatively influence outcomes. To better understand these barriers, we interviewed mental healthcare providers (n = 11) and Black young adults with first-person experience of psychosis (n = 13) about the experiences of minority young adults with mental health treatment. We analyzed interview transcripts and, consistent with constructivist grounded theory methods, identified iterative patterns across individuals about barriers to care. …

Integrating Health Equity Into Implementation Science To Advance Chronic Disease Prevention And Control, Callie Walsh-Bailey Jan 2024

Integrating Health Equity Into Implementation Science To Advance Chronic Disease Prevention And Control, Callie Walsh-Bailey

Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Marginalized populations are inequitably burdened by chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and cancer. The goal of health equity work is to ensure all people have a fair and just opportunity to achieve optimal health. Implementation science has made health equity a greater focus and priority in recent years. There has been a proliferation of guidance on what implementation science needs to do to advance equity. However, the field currently lacks specific, actionable guidance on how to integrate equity. The overarching goal of this dissertation is to synthesize conceptual and theoretical underpinnings regarding health equity and bring them …

Artistic Interactions Between Byzantine And Arab Muslims: From The Perspective Of Western Scholars, Maen M. Omoush Jan 2024

Artistic Interactions Between Byzantine And Arab Muslims: From The Perspective Of Western Scholars, Maen M. Omoush

Information Sciences Letters

The Mediterranean region has long been an area of interaction between the two great powers, Arab Muslims, and Byzantine Christians. This relationship began in the 7th century AD and continued through to the 12th century. Although Islam became an increasingly powerful force during this period, these interactions were not always hostile; rather there was significant cultural exchange between both sides in areas such as art and architecture. These exchanges helped foster mutual understanding, which ultimately led to peaceful coexistence throughout much of this period despite their differences. This research aims to clarify the communication between arts of the Byzantine and …

The Case For Second Chances: A Pathway To Decarceration In Maine, Catherine Besteman, Leo Hylton Jan 2024

The Case For Second Chances: A Pathway To Decarceration In Maine, Catherine Besteman, Leo Hylton

Maine Law Review

The Article argues that Maine incarcerates too many people, for too long, for too many things, at too great of an expense. We offer evidence to support this claim, briefly review some of the criminal legal legislation that shaped our present reality, and show how recent efforts at reform have been, at best, only modestly successful. In concert with a growing number of expert voices across the country calling for strategies of decarceration, our goal is to demonstrate the need for second chance legislation in Maine in the form of the reinstatement of parole, an effective clemency process, a far-reaching …

The Qualitative Report

I am writing this review, Transformative Visions for Qualitative Inquiry, considering performative, philosophical, and artistic transformations as an essential reading for faculty and students—novice and veteran. It inspires readers, writers, and novice and veteran researchers in various social sciences disciplines and educational landscapes to envision innovative approaches to healing from crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and/or earthquakes. These processes encourage resisting, recovering, connecting, finding joy, and embracing life. Likewise, Transformative Visions for Qualitative Inquiry centers on the concept of transformation and its potential for the future of qualitative research amidst a world grappling with the multifaceted implications of COVID-19, …

Collective Memory And Creative Subjectivity: A Living Conversation, Alexandra Katherine Goodall, Alba Torres Robinat Jan 2024

Collective Memory And Creative Subjectivity: A Living Conversation, Alexandra Katherine Goodall, Alba Torres Robinat

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This article is the record of a dialogue between two artists and Expressive Arts therapists, Alba Torres Robinat and Alexandra Katherine Goodall. They chose to undertake this conversation in the form of letters that were written back-and-forth over a period of time in a shared document, which places their correspondence in the tradition of epistolary writing. This decision to write the article as letters lends the conversation an immediacy, a warmth, a sense of time, distance and familiarity, and a feeling of intimacy.

The authors invite readers to witness the deepening of a relationship and the development of their conversational …

Immanuel Kant's Investigation Into The Beautiful And The Sublime And Its Theoretical Provisions, Puman Li Li Puman Is A Ph.D. Candidate In The Faculty Of Philosophy, Heidelberg University. His Research Interests Include German Aesthetics And Ethics.

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Immanuel Kant's theoretical investigation into the beautiful and the sublime is embodied in his theoretical construction of Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime and Critique of Judgment. Through practical anthropology and critical philosophy, the inherent differences in Kant's early and late aesthetic thought on these concepts can be revealed. Such differences profoundly reveal the distinction between axiological provisions based on the empirical principle and epistemological provisions based on the transcendental principle. In this way, Kant reveals that the beautiful and the sublime are not only positive to the judgement of aesthetic value in national cultural life, but …

Sacred Nutrition: Asserting Indigenous Sovereignty And Rights Of Women And Nature To Ensure The Right To Food In The United States, Mariana Chilton, Phd, Mph Jan 2024

Sacred Nutrition: Asserting Indigenous Sovereignty And Rights Of Women And Nature To Ensure The Right To Food In The United States, Mariana Chilton, Phd, Mph

University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review

This Paper is a provocation to move beyond a standard human rights and right to food framework to encourage scholars, activists, and political leaders to engage in full throttle societal transformation. Ending hunger in the United States demands nothing less. The modern human rights framework is enshrined in the modern nation-state system that is rooted in the transatlantic slave trade, colonization, and genocide.1 Three primary ways in which these roots took hold were through land theft, rape, and starvation. Hence, to assert that integrating the right to food and freedom from hunger into nation-state constitutions or into national plans to …

When Policies Problematize The Local: Social-Environmental Justice And Forest Policies In Burkina Faso And Vietnam, Grace Yee Wong, Mawa Karambiri, Pham Thu Thuy, Alizée Ville, Tuan Long Hoang, Chi Dao Thi Linh, Andrea Downing, Amanda Jiménez-Aceituno, Maria Brockhaus

Forest and Society

We examine social-environmental justice in forest governance by asking who is problematized as drivers of deforestation and forest degradation. We adapt Bacchi’s “What is the problem represented to be” approach to the community forest (CAF) model in Burkina Faso and the Payment for Forest Environmental Services (PFES) in Vietnam and examine the implementation of these policies in specific sites through disaggregated focus group discussions (men, women, youth, ethnic minorities). We delve into the discursive, lived and subjectification effects of the policies’ problematizations, highlighting tensions and contestations relating to forest access and benefits. For both countries, what is left unproblematized in …

A Pilot Model Of Community-Based Forest Management In Xuan Nha Nature Reserve, Son La Province, Vietnam, Thuy Thi Phan, Duong Huu Nong

Forest and Society

This study evaluated the implementation of a pilot model for promoting community-based conservation through a contracting program in Xuan Nha Nature Reserve, located in Son La province, northern Vietnam, from 2014 to 2022. To assess the effectiveness of the program, in-depth interviews were conducted with 26 officials and 100 individuals residing in three villages. The findings revealed that the program successfully facilitated community-based conservation by involving local communities in participatory land use planning and forest protection at the village level. The study identified four main factors that contributed to the successful implementation of the program: (1) clearly defined objectives, (2) …

Changing Livelihoods, Development, And Cultural Practices: Reshaping Forests Among The Tau Taa Vana People, Muhammad Alie Humaedi, Ibnu Nadzir, Setiawan Khoirul Himmi, Sri Astutik, Adhis Tessa, Rosita Novi Andari Jan 2024

Changing Livelihoods, Development, And Cultural Practices: Reshaping Forests Among The Tau Taa Vana People, Muhammad Alie Humaedi, Ibnu Nadzir, Setiawan Khoirul Himmi, Sri Astutik, Adhis Tessa, Rosita Novi Andari

Forest and Society

The Tau Taa Vana people live in the Bulang Highlands, Tojo Una-Una, in Central Sulawesi Province. The region's development has shaped the marginalization of forest-dwelling and forest-adjacent communities. From the 1980s to the 1990s, illegal logging networks served as the power holders, backed by Indonesia’s authoritarian regime of that time. Illegal logging destroyed a large part of the Tau Taa Vana's sacred forest (pengale kapali). As part of the massive logging agenda, the government launched many legal programs that further isolated the Tau Taa Vana people from their land. The first program was transmigration in 1995-1998, which converted sacred …

Essential Ecosystem Area Policies As A Means To Promote Participatory And Inclusive Conservation In Forest Landscape Governance: Centering Perspectives Of Marginalized Women In Taman Kili-Kili, Indonesia, Titiek Kartika Hendrastiti, Rahmanta Setiahadi, Siti Kusujiarti, Dian Pratiwi, Hale Irfan Safrudi Jan 2024

Essential Ecosystem Area Policies As A Means To Promote Participatory And Inclusive Conservation In Forest Landscape Governance: Centering Perspectives Of Marginalized Women In Taman Kili-Kili, Indonesia, Titiek Kartika Hendrastiti, Rahmanta Setiahadi, Siti Kusujiarti, Dian Pratiwi, Hale Irfan Safrudi

Forest and Society

This study analyses dimensions of participatory forest landscape governance of the Essential Ecosystem Area (EEA) of Taman Kili-Kili, Indonesia. The voices of marginalized communities, and especially women, are rarely incorporated into forest landscape governance and conservation policies. The recently established Indonesian EEA policy mandates a participatory approach, with explicit requirements to involve marginalized groups and gendered perspectives. However, on a practical level, policy formulation and application unfold in very different ways. Using a Postcolonial Feminist Participatory Action Research (PFPAR) approach, we center local communities' power relations in our analysis as a specific means for drawing out various intersectional relations to …

Governing The (Dis)Order: Toke And The Convergence Of Artisanal Oil Mining And State Visibility In Sumur Baru, Vieronica Varbi Sununianti, Arie Sujito, Heru Nugroho Jan 2024

Governing The (Dis)Order: Toke And The Convergence Of Artisanal Oil Mining And State Visibility In Sumur Baru, Vieronica Varbi Sununianti, Arie Sujito, Heru Nugroho

Forest and Society

This article explores the question of why and how ‘illegal’ artisanal mining in the oil-rich region of Indonesia remains in place despite official bans by the central government. By taking a qualitative ethnographic study on the practice in Sumur Baru, Dusun Tue, a village in South Sumatra Province, our inquiry takes seriously the formation of resilient labor in daily encounters with state institutions. We employ a governmentality approach and show how quotidian interactions between state and community has legitimized practices of artisanal mining. Sites become relatively governable in conditions of continuous displacement through ongoing negotiations between intermediaries ( …

Environmental Education For Sustainability, Lucille Gertz Jan 2024

Environmental Education For Sustainability, Lucille Gertz

Educational Studies Dissertations

The climate is in crisis. Many conservation organizations identify in their mission statements the priority of motivating constituents to engage with conservation action. This priority is typically implemented by educators who design and deliver educational activities and materials. This study, designed to develop a professional pathway for environmental educators to develop programs designed to motivate adult audiences toward engagement with conservation action, addressed the question: How can environmental educators more effectively promote conservation behavior change in adult learning audiences? Three guiding research questions were: 1) To what extent are environmental educators familiar with and utilizing theoretical frameworks and research-based tools …

Journal of Prison Education Research

Correctional education programs are rehabilitation programs designed for incarcerated persons in Nigerian correctional institutions. However, getting the graying incarcerated persons to participate in education programs becomes quite challenging. This study investigates graying incarcerated persons and education programs in one correctional centre. Data were collected qualitatively from fifteen (15) incarcerated individuals aged 60 years and above using semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was employed in analyzing the data generated for the study. Findings show that there are no available education programs for graying incarcerated individuals. The study also revealed that designing education programs in such a way that it will accommodate the …
