Toward Scientific Rigor: Setting Standards For Indirect Calorimetry Analysis And Reporting, Elizabeth L Lieu, Mark A Herman, Sean M Hartig
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Indirect calorimetry determines energy expenditure by measuring respiratory gas exchange. The approach is based on the principle that nutrient metabolism consumes O2 and produces CO2 and water in predictable ratios that can be compared with heat production. Due to the impracticality and high cost of direct calorimetry, indirect calorimetry is the major approach for modern metabolic studies in preclinical models. Despite the broad adoption of this method in rodent phenotyping, the field has lacked standardized methods for analyzing, representing, and sharing these data, limiting scientific progress. The recent review in Nature Metabolism by the International Indirect Calorimetry Consensus Committee (IICCC) …

Networks of miniature implants could enable simultaneous sensing and stimulation at different locations in the body, such as the heart and central or peripheral nervous system. This capability would support precise disease tracking and treatment or enable prosthetic technologies with many degrees of freedom. However, wireless power and data transfer are often inefficient through biological tissues, particularly as the number of implanted devices increases. Here we show that magnetoelectric wireless data and power transfer supports a network of millimetre-sized bioelectronic implants in which system efficiency improves with additional devices. We demonstrate wireless, battery-free networks ranging from one to six implants, …

Rab GTPases are key regulators of endosomal trafficking in eukaryotes. In mammalian cells, Rab4 and Rab7 were shown to localize to distinct compartments, with Rab4 on early endosomes for fast recycling and Rab7 on late endosomes for degradation. Here, we show that in Drosophila, endogenous Rab4 and Rab7 extensively colocalize across tissues and developmental stages. Recruited to the same compartments through mechanisms that do not require the activity of the other, they have opposing effects on endolysosomal size: Rab4 overexpression or Rab7 impairment leads to enlarged endolysosomes, whereas Rab4 loss or constitutively active Rab7 reduces their sizes. Rab4 deficiency suppresses …
Non-Synaptic Function And Localization Of Syntaxin-Binding Protein 1 In A Mouse Model Of Stxbp1-Related Epileptic Encephalopathy, Tao Yang, Rajat Banerjee, Yamei Deng, Sheetal Jahagirdar, Joo Hyun Kim, Wu Chen, Mingshan Xue, Alexey I Nesvizhskii, Michael D Uhler, Jack M Parent, Yu Wang

Objective: De novo mutations in the syntaxin-binding protein 1 (STXBP1), encoded by STXBP1, are among the most prevalent causes of variable neurodevelopmental disorders, including epileptic encephalopathy, developmental delay, and movement disorders. Although STXBP1 has been proposed as a critical presynaptic protein controlling synaptic vesicle exocytosis, clinical phenotypes also suggest that its biological function could be more diverse.
Methods: The expression pattern of STXBP1 was studied using immunostaining in vitro and in vivo. Synaptosome isolation was performed to investigate the synaptic and non-synaptic localization of STXBP1 in the brain. STXBP1 immunoprecipitation followed by mass spectrometry (MS) was conducted to identify protein …
From Damage Signals To Immune Modulators: Oxidized Lipids In Immunometabolic Inflammation, Neetu Srivastava, Xiaoxiao Wan
From Damage Signals To Immune Modulators: Oxidized Lipids In Immunometabolic Inflammation, Neetu Srivastava, Xiaoxiao Wan
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Oxidized lipids, once viewed as byproducts of oxidative stress, are now recognized as critical mediators linking metabolism, redox imbalance, and immunity. Generated through enzymatic and nonenzymatic oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, oxidized phospholipids, lipid aldehydes, and oxidized lipoproteins act as context-dependent signals regulating immune activation, resolution, and metabolic adaptation. In metabolic inflammation, these lipids engage scavenger and Toll-like receptors to influence macrophage polarization, dendritic-cell function, and T-cell differentiation. Their context and concentration determine whether oxidized lipids amplify inflammation or promote immune tolerance. Accumulation of these species connects oxidative stress to immune dysfunction, contributing to diseases, such as atherosclerosis, obesity, diabetes, …

Single Zonular Fiber Extraction And Characterization: A Platform For Biomechanical, Biochemical And Structural Analyses, Riley Forinash, Sean Staggs, Steven Bassnett, Juan Rodriguez
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Zonular fibers are essential for suspending the lens within the eye and, in primates, for transmitting forces generated by the ciliary body to drive ocular accommodation. Despite their biomechanical importance, the response of these fibers to sudden strains, and the molecular basis of their exceptional durability remain poorly understood. This is due, in part, to the absence of tools for studying them in isolation. Here, we present a custom-built, cost-effective apparatus designed to isolate, manipulate, and characterize individual zonular fibers under controlled physical and chemical conditions. The apparatus enables quantification of elastic moduli, stress-relaxation behavior, Poisson's ratio, and response to …

Congenital limb anomalies remain without an etiological diagnosis in up to 65% of patients. To help close this gap, we describe the genetic diagnostic outcomes of a large cohort. Patients whose primary indication for genetic consultation was a limb anomaly were included from 2014 to 2024. Demographic, investigation, and diagnostic information were extracted, described, and compared. One hundred and thirty-two patients were included in the final cohort, with an average molecular diagnostic yield of 36%. The most common conditions were polydactyly (24%) and radial anomalies (19%). Fifty percent had syndromic features. Seven (5%) patients underwent chromosomal microarray (CMA) only, 81 …

BACKGROUND: Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an inherited predisposition to colorectal cancer and characterized by profuse colorectal adenomas starting from the second decade of life. Regional (left vs. right) differences in the colonic microbiologic and immunologic microenvironment may impact adenoma evolution but are poorly understood. We aimed to characterize regional molecular, microbial, DNA damage, and immune differences in pediatric FAP polyps to test the hypothesis that polyps in pediatric FAP exhibit distinct regional and molecular features that contribute to differential growth and genomic instability.
METHODS: Colonic polyps and adjacent non-polyp mucosa were harvested from pediatric FAP patients undergoing colonoscopy. Tandem …

The New Red Scare: The Shocking Truth Behind The Fda's Unethical Regulation Of Red 40 And Other Synthetic Food Dyes, Angelica Martuscello
The New Red Scare: The Shocking Truth Behind The Fda's Unethical Regulation Of Red 40 And Other Synthetic Food Dyes, Angelica Martuscello
Pace Law Review
For decades, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has allowed synthetic food dyes to remain in the American food supply, despite evidence linking them to cancer and behavioral issues in children. These additives offer no nutritional value yet remain common in everyday products. This essay scrutinizes the FDA’s failure to enforce its own legal obligations, particularly its continued approval of synthetic dyes, which were later found to be harmful to human health. Harmful dyes have been kept on the market due to weak oversight, outdated science, and industry lobbying. In 2025, the FDA finally announced a plan to phase …

N-Dqn: Neutrosophic Deep Q-Network For Uncertainty-Aware Forecasting And Decision Optimization, Rania Lutfi
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Uncertainty remains a critical challenge in dynamic spatiotemporal forecasting. This study proposes the Neutrosophic Deep Q-Network (N-DQN), a framework that integrates neutrosophic logic with deep reinforcement learning to enhance decision optimization under uncertainty. Features are modeled through truth, indeterminacy, and falsity membership functions, enabling robust handling of ambiguous data. The framework incorporates attention-guided preprocessing and horizon-aware optimization to adapt predictions across short- and long-term intervals. Experiments on benchmark traffic datasets (METR-LA and PEMS-BAY) demonstrate improved forecasting accuracy and reduced error rates compared with established baselines. The results highlight the scalability and resilience of N-DQN, positioning it as a promising approach …

“Care Work” In Facilitative Mediation: Interactional Techniques For Emotional Support In The Context Of Conflict Resolution, Angela Garcia
Natural & Applied Sciences Faculty Publications
This paper investigates how facilitative mediators use “care work” techniques when participants display emotional or relational concerns during the session. Conversation analysis is used to analyze a pre-existing dataset of video-recorded small claims and divorce mediation sessions. Techniques the mediators used to do care work include reflection, topic refocusing, complimenting, role modeling, and coaching. The analysis shows how the trajectory of the talk in the mediation session is impacted by care work. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for the mediator’s role and the effectiveness of the interaction for the conflict resolution process in mediation.

Single-Valued, Double-Valued, Triple-Valued, Quadruple-Valued, And Quintuple-Valued Neutrosophic Graph, Takaaki Fujita, Arif Mehmood, Arkan A. Ghaib
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Concepts such as fuzzy sets, neutrosophic sets, rough sets, and plithogenic sets have been extensively studied as formal tools for modeling uncertainty, and they have found broad applications across many disciplines. A Double-Valued Neutrosophic Set (DVNS) extends the classical neutrosophic framework by splitting indeterminacy into two distinct components: one leaning toward truth and the other leaning toward falsity. In recent years, further refinements—namely Triple-Valued, Quadruple-Valued, and Quintuple-Valued Neutrosophic Sets—have also been introduced and investigated. These uncertainty models have naturally been lifted to graph-theoretic settings, where vertices and edges represent entities and relationships under ambiguity. Although fuzzy graphs and neutrosophic graphs …

Evaluating Domains' Trustworthiness Based On Uncertainty-Driven Methodologies In The Era Of Sixth Generation, Zekra Sakr, Mona Mohamed
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
The onset of today's innovations pledges to have a beneficial influence on contemporary civilization in an era of intelligent revolutions, setting a precedent for unrivaled efficiency, creativity, and connectedness. The integration between these technologies contributes to the mutual benefit of each one, wherein this relation is a so-called ``reciprocal partnership''. For instance, the sixth generation (6G) wireless networks permit blockchain nodes to coordinate huge volumes of transaction data in real-time. On the other hand, blockchain is considered a secure valve because spectrum sharing can be automated with blockchain and smart contracts. Accordingly, analyzing and evaluating the contribution of these technologies …

Neutrosophic Finsler–Cohomological Framework For Engineering Systems Under Uncertainty, Mona Gharib, Ghulam Muhammad, Muhammad Idrees, Zeeshan Gul
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
This paper introduces a novel mathematical framework that combines Neutrosophic Finsler Geometry with Neutrosophic Cohomology for evaluating the performance of Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors under uncertain and indeterminate operating conditions. Classical motor performance models typically assume precise measurements of torque, current, and efficiency; however, in real-world settings, these parameters are often affected by noise, incomplete information, and conflicting observations. By embedding motor operating states into a neutrosophic Finsler space, the proposed approach captures variations not only in magnitude but also in direction, uncertainty, and conflict of performance metrics. In addition, neutrosophic Cohomology is employed to characterize global invariants of …

Thrombosis remains a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. During thrombosis, activated platelets and endothelial cells expose phosphatidylserine (PS) on their outer membranes, creating a surface that accelerates clot formation. Current antithrombotic therapies, such as heparin and warfarin, carry significant bleeding risks, highlighting the need for safer alternatives. In response, we developed a PS-targeting liposomal formulation composed of Zn-dipicolylamine (DPA)-cyanine-3[22,22] and 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (molar ratio 3:97). This DPA-harboring liposome (DPAL) binds selectively to PS-rich surfaces such as activated platelets and has demonstrated efficacy in reducing thrombosis in mouse models, with minimal bleeding. In the present study, we examined the interaction …

Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA) is caused by the accumulation of undegraded glycosaminoglycans due to the deficiency of the N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfate sulfatase (GALNS) enzyme. MPS IVA manifests as progressive systemic skeletal dysplasia. Gene therapy (GT) is potentially a one-time treatment in which the enzyme is continuously produced, circulated, and delivered to target tissues. However, immune responses to gene products can diminish therapeutic efficacy. We hypothesized that oral delivery of tolerogenic peptides induces immune tolerance to human GALNS (hGALNS) in MPS IVA mice, enhancing therapeutic efficacy. Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts
This paper provides a comparative analysis of the embryonic Surrealism of two well-known figures of the era: Jamil Hamoudi, an Iraqi surrealist artist, and Aminullah Rezaei, an Iranian surrealist artist. The results found that Surrealism in Iraq associated itself with cultural identity and sacred symbolism, unveiling Hamoudi as the merger of geometry, calligraphy, and warm colours, towards reshaping the collective unconscious and reformulating Eastern spirituality in a modernist fashion. While Surrealism itself was an American import, Surrealism in Iran was contained within a frame of clinical satire, with Rezaei using hybrid bodies and anatomical distortions within realism and fantasy to …

Motivation: Methods for sharing gene regulatory information and knowledge on FAIR principles, particularly in the context of tissue-specific gene regulation, remain poorly defined and implemented, hampering discovery and clinical genetic diagnosis.
Results: We specified FAIR principles for tissue-specific gene regulatory information and knowledge; implemented them by developing a registry of regulatory elements and aggregating FAIR gene regulatory information from several major sources; developed computational tools that utilize these FAIR resources; and demonstrated their utility by associating gene regulatory variants with major subtypes of congenital heart disease.

In a moment when big-P Politics feel practically catastrophic, the suggestion that we should be focusing on regulation could seem foolish, or worse: it could seem like some kind of self-serving effort to pretend our work rearranging deck chairs continues to matter. Regulation can feel like the opposite of resistance, and resistance is on many peoples’ minds these days, particularly in the United States. And, the goal of this paper is to argue that failing to focus on regulation – and especially on trust in regulation, in this time of revolution – would be a terrible mistake. Regulation is at …
The Course Of Empire: Romantic Art And The Origins Of American Conservation, Dr. Shawn Bailey
The Course Of Empire: Romantic Art And The Origins Of American Conservation, Dr. Shawn Bailey
Professional Learning Day
This panel will discuss the creation of the world's first national park through the lens of nineteenth century nationalism. Specifically, we will answer the question: how does Romantic art lead directly to the creation of Yellowstone in 1872? This will include a run through of a full lesson plan, with audience participation, and include access to all necessary sources, slides, and a fun homework assignment. While I use this lesson in an environmental history class, it would also work well in a United States survey when discussing the rise of American nationalism in the nineteenth century.

Uncovering Marginalized Groups In Local History, Zach Bishop
Uncovering Marginalized Groups In Local History, Zach Bishop
Professional Learning Day
Local history is often told through the voices of the "victors" - the wealthy, white male landowners who founded towns and cities. Yet the stories of women, Native Americans, Black Americans, and various immigrant communities are equally vital to understanding our communities' pasts. This presentation will highlight research strategies and resources for uncovering and teaching the experiences of these historically marginalized groups in your area's history
