Temporally Modulated Pixel Mask For Smooth Low-Luminance Display Dimming, Sangmoo Choi, Weihsiang Hung Feb 2026

Temporally Modulated Pixel Mask For Smooth Low-Luminance Display Dimming, Sangmoo Choi, Weihsiang Hung

Defensive Publications Series

Approaches for achieving low luminance on self-emissive displays, such as by reducing pixel current or applying a static pixel mask, can result in image uniformity issues or an abrupt change in brightness that may be perceived as flicker. Systems and methods are described that can address this by temporally modulating the intensity of a pixel mask. For example, instead of instantaneously deactivating a subset of pixels, a system can progressively reduce the luminance of designated pixels over a configurable period spanning multiple display frames. This may be achieved by iteratively applying a decreasing luminance multiplier to the masked pixels until …

Reconfigurable Packaging System For Transformation Into Functional Objects, Lin Wei-Chi Feb 2026

Reconfigurable Packaging System For Transformation Into Functional Objects, Lin Wei-Chi

Defensive Publications Series

Packaging for items, such as consumer electronics, is often designed for a single use, which can contribute to material waste after a product is unboxed. A reconfigurable packaging system can be transformed into one or more functional objects. The system may integrate engineered structural features, for example, pre-defined fold lines, perforated sections, and interlocking die-cut components, into the packaging substrate. Following these integrated guides, a user can physically manipulate and reassemble portions of the container into secondary items. Examples of such items can include a device support stand, a desktop organizer, or a three-dimensional figure. This approach can extend the …

Soil And Sovereignty: An Analysis Of Federal And State Laws Affecting Foreign Investment In U.S. Agricultural Land, Brantley Swindell

Mercer Law Review

Foreign ownership of U.S. agricultural land has risen significantly in recent years. From 2014 to 2023, the share of agricultural acres owned by foreign interests increased by 67%. Although the share of agricultural acres owned by foreign countries and interests only amounts to just over 3% of the total U.S. private farmland, the U.S. federal government and many states have passed laws to prohibit, restrict, limit, regulate or create requirements for foreign ownership of agricultural land and real property. As of 2025, twenty nine states have passed laws to regulate such foreign ownership.

This Comment outlines the regulations on foreign …

Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Abstract – Introduction: Intermittent hypoxemia (IH) is common in preterm infants and linked to brain injury. S100B is a glial-derived protein that rises early after neural injury and can be measured noninvasively in urine. We evaluated the relationship between IH burden and urinary S100B in preterm infants of ≤32 weeks’ gestation. Methods: Preterm infants of ≤32 weeks’ gestation were prospectively enrolled. Oxygen saturation was continuously monitored, and IH profiles were quantified using validated algorithms. Urine S100B was measured by ultrasensitive immunoassay and normalized for urinary creatinine. Infants with severe intraventricular hemorrhage were excluded. Weighted Spearman correlations examined associations between IH …

Exosome Engineering For Blocking Gut Dysbiosis And Inducing Cell Death Mechanisms In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Ahalya Muraleedharan, Karthik Rangavajhula, Swapan K. Ray Feb 2026

Exosome Engineering For Blocking Gut Dysbiosis And Inducing Cell Death Mechanisms In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Ahalya Muraleedharan, Karthik Rangavajhula, Swapan K. Ray

Faculty Publications

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most lethal primary brain tumor in adults. Emerging evidence endorses that gut dysbiosis contributes to GBM progression through the gut–brain axis (GBA), promoting inflammation and therapeutic resistance via abnormal short-chain fatty acid production and cytokine dysregulation. Exosomes, naturally occurring nanovesicles (30–150 nm), offer promising therapeutic potential due to their blood–brain barrier permeability, biocompatibility, and versatile cargo capacity. This review examines exosome engineering strategies for dual targeting: inhibiting alterations in gut microbiome and inducing regulated cell death mechanisms such as apoptosis and ferroptosis in GBM. We describe exosome engineering with detailed focus on cargo loading approaches …

Hold Your Horses: The Eleventh Circuit Recognizes A Direct Cause Of Action Under The Takings Clause In Fulton V. Fulton County Board Of Commissioners, Brock Gumbel

Mercer Law Review

“[No person shall be] deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” In just twelve words, the drafters of the Bill of Rights guaranteed property owners a significant protection. The Fifth Amendment Takings Clause is not an express ban on government takings. Rather, it guarantees that when the government takes property from private citizens, it must provide just compensation. Although this guarantee is generally well established, its enforcement in federal court introduces unique and significant challenges.

Plaintiffs must have a cause of action to invoke …

Low-Dose Prophylaxis Versus On-Demand Treatment For Children With Severe Hemophilia A In Indonesia: A Conceptual Model, Levina Chandra Khoe, Nur Atika, Dhia Ticha Pertiwi, Septiara Putri

Kesmas

Hemophilia A is a rare bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency of clotting factor VIII, leading to recurrent bleeds, joint damage, and disability. Low-dose prophylaxis has been shown to achieve better clinical outcomes than on-demand treatment in reducing bleeding frequency. However, in Indonesia, access and affordability remain key challenges. This study aimed to develop a conceptual model for conducting a health economic evaluation of low-dose prophylaxis treatment for children with severe hemophilia A in Indonesia. This study followed the ISPOR-SMDM Modeling guidelines, outlining two-stage processes: conceptualization of the clinical problem and model development. A systematic literature review was conducted to …

Water salinity and scarcity constitute major limitations to crop production in arid and semi-arid regions. Introduction of nutritious and stress-tolerant underutilized crops is a promising approach for dietary enrichment, cropping system diversification, remediation of marginal and degraded lands, and building climate resilience. The primary objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of water salinity and managed water-deficit stress on grain and fodder yield, identify multi-trait ideotypes, and validate the stability and genetic gain in finger millet ideotypes over a 2-year period. A total of 80 finger millet accessions were evaluated under fresh water (0 dS/m) and two saline …

Engineering Human Microphysiological Models To Investigate Bacterial Extracellular Vesicle–Driven Endothelial And Blood–Brain Barrier Dysfunction, Louis P. Widom Feb 2026

Engineering Human Microphysiological Models To Investigate Bacterial Extracellular Vesicle–Driven Endothelial And Blood–Brain Barrier Dysfunction, Louis P. Widom

Theses

Pathogenic bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) are nanoscale particles derived from bacteria that contain pro-inflammatory cargo. During bacterial infections, BEVs provoke the host inflammatory response and may cause widespread damage. Furthermore, antibiotic treatment can boost BEV production and thereby increase the number of toxic signals traveling through the circulatory system. This is especially dangerous in brain blood vessels since evidence suggests that BEVs may destabilize the protective blood–brain barrier (BBB), resulting in neuroinflammation associated with cognitive decline and development of neurological disorders. Our understanding of BEV interactions with the host remains limited, necessitating the development of in vitro models to better …

Nanoscale Opportunities In Extracellular Matrix Mimicry, L. Andrew Lyon, Abbygail Caine, Elif Narbay, E. Daniel Cárdenas-Vásquez

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We present an overview of the composition, function, energetics, and dynamics of extracellular matrix and its relation to nanoscale structures and phenomena. These concepts are then related to the development of synthetic and biosynthetic materials that aim to mimic the extracellular matrix for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering technologies. Notable successes and advancements towards the goal of biomimicry are outlined, while remaining challenges and knowledge gaps towards that goal are highlighted. Finally, we frame the remaining challenges in the field in terms of nanoscience-related research opportunities that if solved, might prove to be transformative steps forward in the discipline.

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The bone marrow endosteum provides a robust source of bone-making osteoblasts by housing various types of osteoblast precursor cells, including endosteal stem cells expressing fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (Fgfr3) and their downstream progenitor cell populations. In fetal bone development, Dlx5 marks early perichondrial cells that populate the diaphyseal bone and marrow stroma in the postnatal stages. However, the location of Dlx5-expressing cells in the postnatal bone marrow and how they contribute to osteogenesis remain undefined. Here, we show that Dlx5

Toward A Model Of Agentic Professional Learning: A Phenomenological Study Of Collective Efficacy Development, Stephanie Thomas Feb 2026

Toward A Model Of Agentic Professional Learning: A Phenomenological Study Of Collective Efficacy Development, Stephanie Thomas

Education Dissertations

Collective teacher efficacy (CTE) refers to a faculty’s shared belief in its collective ability to take action and positively impact student outcomes in ways more influential than other predictive factors, including socioeconomic status or prior achievement. Research has shown that high levels of CTE are associated with improved student achievement as well as positive outcomes and productive behaviors among educators. However, limited attention has been given to how intentional design and facilitation of professional learning experiences could foster the development of CTE. Given the strong empirical evidence linking CTE with student achievement and the virtuous cycle, or bidirectional causality, between …
